Back in the day a lot of people thought of POTA as "kids' stuff" (some still do). That's why the budgets for the sequels were so low.
That's not true, and now it's time for a little "proper study of APES.
While the concept of PLANET was, and still is, seen as "kids' stuff" to many, Fox had tried to counter that with the way PLANET was originally promoted as "An Unusual and Important Motion Picture," which is probably pretentious but what the hell, and 40 plus years later the "motion picture" is just as popular as it has ever been. But the budgets for the sequels were low primarily because the studio was in dire financial straights during the years those sequels were made. Fox nearly went belly up the same way it had back after the CLEOPATRA debacle, and unfortunately the sequels had to suffer, and even with that, the limited budgets really didn't sting until they got to BATTLE, by which time the filmmakers had pretty much exhausted their creativity -- given the budget constraints.

See, to me, it seems more than a little ridiculous to say that comic books are for kids and not to be taken seriously when we're on a discussion group devoted to films and TV shows about talking apes. It's kind of like a person with greasy hair insulting a person with bad acne for being unattractive.
So then you're saying you see POTA as comic book level stuff?
Gee, I wonder if that's what Pierre Boulle thought when he was writing his book, or Michael Wilson and Rod Serling thought when they were working on the scripts, and Arthur Jacobs must have sold Richard Zanuck on it by telling him, "It's just as good as a comic book!"

Yeah, BLADERUNNER is another one of those movies the popularity of which escapes me. I was that impressed with it when it was new, and watching it in HD on satellite a couple weeks ago, I gave up after fifteen minutes out of sheer boredom.
This news makes about as much sense to me as a remake of LOGAN'S RUN or a sequel to TRON.

If the new film does better than our wildest dreams and revives the franchise (vile word) can a broadway show be far behind?
And I don't mean a show with stupid death-defying stunts, a crappy score by U2 or a Simpsons musical parody.
I'm talking about gorillas on horseback galloping down the aisles, Icarus crashing into a humumgous water tank and Taylor screaming "Damn you all to hell" to a life-sized Statue of Liberty as the lights go down.
Not a staged comicbook, but a kick-ass operatic rendition of the first film with a stage full of damned dirty apes.
And get Charlie Sheen to play Taylor. I hear he's available. "Me against apes? Duh, winning! I've got Ursus blood and Zaius DNA, dude."
This is happening people, don't doubt it for a second. You heard it here first.
I've heard many things here, but that certainly was a first, and now you've got me wondering "Can a POTA 3-D amusement park ride be far behind?" <.html

Well, them's fightin' words young man.I'm proud to say I rejoice in the fact that I'm a total Spider-Man geek and have been for four decades now.In fact, last year, I had a letter printed in Amazing Spidey, complaining about him being portrayed getting drunk and having casual sex(so, so childish, that).
Oh, misunderstood again.... well, I am talking to humans. What can you expect?
I have nothing against Spiderman, nor do I want to see comic books wiped from the face of the earth, but Spiderman is what it is, and comic books are what they are, and POTA is what it is, which I guess happens to be many things to many people.
But for me, it's apples and oranges, and I don't like to mix the two. I'm just not thrilled by APES as a comic book thingie.
And as for Peter Parker being one of the "great, great literary creations of the 20th Century"..... well so is Humbert Humbert, and let's here it for casual sex! Is there any better kind?

.htmlWhat a load of hugger-mugger. Yeah, Fox was in dire straits financially but they also relegated "Apes" to the children's ghetto, so they didn't feel it was worth investment. And sequels were looked down on. There's many variables. Now it's an upside-down civilization where kids and sequels rule but back then Fox felt it would be diminishing returns and it became self-fulfilling.
Now excuse me while I self-fulfill myself.

What I'm saying is that literature is literature, regardless of medium. Some of it is brilliant, some of it is just average and some of it is unadulterated crap. That's true for books, it's true for movies and it's true for comics. I consider Boulle's POTA novel a fun read--but I consider Alan Moore's Watchmen to be far better written. I consider Rod Serling's Twilight Zone scripts to be gold--but I consider Moore's V for Vendetta much more compelling and sophisticated than many of them. I consider Shakespeare to be among the best writers of all time--but I consider Jamie Delano's Hellblazer run to be more consistently thought-provoking. And I consider Gone With the Wind to be one of the greatest movies ever made--but I consider Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns to be far more powerful. I am more concerned with the quality of writing and the story being told than I am with the medium in which that story is being presented. Boulle
wrote some great books--but in my opinion, Moore, Delano and Miller are all better writers, and I'd be more likely to re-read Watchmen for a sixth time than I would Boulle's Monkey Planet. Dismissing all of comicdom as kids' stuff--while it's certainly your right, and I don't mean to come off as arguing with you--means you're closing yourself off to a lot of brilliant literature.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but the images I can imagine in my mind when I read a good book are far better than any illustration I might see in a comic book version of the same story.
I say, comic books are for the imagination challenged. And, dare I say, this is also true of movies.

To cater to this demographic, even Marvel and DC now write more towards adults than kids. They now have special kid comics for the little ones. I'm not saying that they are great sci-fi by any means....but I do have friends who still collect the mainstream comics and some of them are impressive. Even G.I. Joe has taken an adult turn. Personally, I can't wait for the POTA comic.

Maybe like me, he prefers the book to any of the films, series, comics, etc that have come since. That's not to say that there's nothing to enjoy or love about the films and other stuff that have come out since the book (heck, I enjoy the Burton film, too, but best not go there), but that they're not a patch on the original novel. Still, apples and oranges springs to mind with this type of argument; it's not black-and-white, where you can't enjoy the film if you prefer the book. However, I do think that Haristas has gone a little too far for my liking on this subject, even if I do generally agree that illustrations in a comic story are usually there because the author didn't have the imagination to explain in words and impart into the imagination what's shown in pictures. There are some great comics out there, but they're usually few and far between (the usual suspects tend to get thrown about: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Maus, etc).

Hence why comics appeal to the young... and then we move on to more challenging and imaginative things. Sorry. ;)
But, I will admit that not all comics are the same. There are great comics out there, there are poor ones, too, much like other mediums of the imagination. Still, to me, a picture in a comic has forced itself into your imagination in the simplest way, doing the work for the reader, while a work of literature, like a novel, has to use words in order to convey to the imagination the scenes, characters, etc, allowing the reader to construct out of the building blocks given by the author. I find that comics tend to limit rather than challenge your imagination, but there are exceptions to this that I'll readily accept.

Yes, and? Did I say anything against the acting of Heston in my comment? Did I say that the film wasn't good (I love the film, it's just that I prefer the book). Maybe I've misunderstood your point, and if I have I'm sorry, but I don't understand why showing Heston playing in Shakespeare plays is counter to anything that I've said.

Rory, I respect your opinion, man, but wow... that just smacks of elitism and condescension.
I guess that's what I'm being. I truly believe that we're living in an era of cultural decline, and the elevation by some of comic books to an equal status with some of the best literature from the past is just one small example of that. Another would be the almost brain dead way Hollywood has been turning to comic books to base movies on, which is simply pandering to an adolescent audience that sadly is the only one left that goes to the movies repeatedly these days.
Now, I have never read WATCHMEN, but if it's so great, why does it have to have pictures? Why isn't just in novel form? I know that if I were writing it, and I thought it was really good as literature, I'd scrap the graphic novel stuff and -- as elitist as this sounds -- get serious about it and put it out as a novel.
By the way, didn't WATCHMEN get made into a movie and didn't it bomb?

And I'm not looking for a fight, nor do I get mad when someone says, "So what are you doing here? Ha! Ha!" You have a point. And if you want to call me an elitist, condescending prick bastard and a degenerate (Roman Polanski is my favorite living director after all) -- it doesn't bother me!
I'm here simply because of my lasting juvenile fixation on one movie, my favorite movie, the original PLANET OF THE APES.
Now, if you love comic books and graphic novels, good for you. I have no argument with that. It's your thing. Whatever.
But's it's not my thing. They really don't interest me at all, and if you're going to try and convince me that I'm missing something and that I should put down the novel I'm currently reading and pick up a comic book instead, then you're going to get an argument from me, and I'm sure you're not going to like some of the things I say, but really, what does it matter?

I'm not calling anyone children here, but I am saying that adults wanting to read comic books is juvenile. That's my honest opinion. I still have many juvenile tastes in things. I'll chew bubble gum if I have it, I recently rented the Blu-ray of TOY STORY 3, and I find Charlie Sheen really funny and can't wait to hear what comes out of his mouth next, BUT, I know I'm being juvenile -- that's how I keep my mature self grounded.

TV Guide has been using these exact wordings since the films first came to
television in the 70's. The only thing that's changed about the BENEATH

The one for CONQUEST was something like "Fourth entry in the series, where
a simian messiah sets the stage for bloodshed".

The one called "Trophies" by Jason Edmiston is particularly awesome.
The rifles should be black, though.

Did anyone ever mention what Sunday's sale price was? I remember reading that it sold out in nine minutes.

Let me know when it drops to like $5.
Remember, the 2001 movie is included with this. Fox has to pay me to order that again.

You could run his Apes and Spider-Man scores and not notice the join.I'm sure there's other scores of Elfman you could add into that mix.I'm not asking for the soaring heights of a Goldsmith, but it would be wondeful to have a score with an Apes 'identity' with a bit of emotion in it.Here's hoping.John, Scrolls. <.html

.htmlThe music was, possibly, the least objectionable element of Burton's Apes.Elfman's music seems to do the job whilst the movie is actually playing, but then sort of melts away in the mind.I can imagine people still listening to Jerry's Apes in twenty years, but it's hard to imagine anybody in twenty years even remembering Danny's Apes.I'm hoping for something great this time around. And if Jeff is going to use potty mouth, so am I from now on.John, Scrolls.

.html.html Dear group--
I recently purchased the Deluxe Blu-ray collection of all five PLANET OF THE APES movies (the one that comes with the lovely hardback book).
So, I am wondering whether I need to keep my 25th Anniversary Widescreen Edition of PLANET OF THE APES (the one in the silver-and-black slipcase). Are ALL the 'Extras' on the 25th Anniversary set repeated on the Blu-ray edition, or did they skip a couple?
I am a completist, and don't wish to let go of the 25th Anniversary Edition if it contains even a single feature that isn't available on the Blu-ray set.
Would anyone be kind enough to advise me on the above?
Many thanks--
Jim Alexander

.htmlHow you doing, first its the -35th anniversay edition- and out side of being a collector theirs no need. Some here say that one of the soundtracks is better than any offered after this . To me their isnt any better sound to the 35th edition than any after--they are all wrong. If you must get rid of it go ahead. Also the box set is blu-ray and has all the extras, I think, I hope someone else chimes in about the extras. I see no reason not to keep it, you got it and resale is nothing special so be a completist and keep it anyway. Take care John M.
