From an employee at the venue:
"Films are screened in our Hi Def theater on Blu-Ray when available,
otherwise on DVD."
So that's pretty much killed my enthusiasm. Since the Ziegfeld in 2008,
I've seen PLANET on the big screen four times and BENEATH once- as a 35mm
print. Think I'll pass on this as well as 2001 and THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, though
for some reason seeing THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN as a DVD projection doesn't bother
me as much as the other two would.
Coincidentally, they didn't seem opposed to the idea of a GO APE! festival
over the course of one or two days, but unless there was something of a
commitment from group members as far actually attending is concerned (and I
don't mean 5 or 10 people either) I'm not going to take that idea any
further with them. Especially if DVD projection is the only option.
Shane, I'm glad you asked that question. I would've been pissed making that
trip and finding out it wasn't a 35mm print.

lurker, first post. I never feel like I have the depth of knowledge usually on
display here to contribute meaningfully -- I know: this is the internets,
contributions don't have to be meaningful! :p But I'm excited about
seeing PotA on a big screen, so it seemed like a good time to announce my
presence. Anyone else going? <<
>>Where is Bethel, NY? <<
>>Not to be stupid, but these are films yes? Not DVD
presentations right? <<
I'll double check to be sure, but from the e-mail they sent me it sounds
like they're showing the actual films. My suggestion for BENEATH was (politely)
turned down for "budgetary and scheduling reasons", but since I've got
somebody's ear there now I'll pitch the idea of them running all five films one
day or over the course of a weekend.

They're also showing 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Andromeda Strain, and The
Day the Earth Stood Still. Looks like I'm making a few trips in April...
I also just e-mailed them making a case for showing BENEATH as well.
Nothing to lose by trying. <<

That was different; I watched an episode and answered some questions about a clip. If you asked those same questions now, I'd have no idea. :-)

To answer your question, on disc one there is nothing that is not included in the Blu-ray collection.
However, on disc two there are several features that are not included anywhere in the Blu-ray collection, such as the film reviews, collections, the Mego commercial and the DVD-ROM program.
So you can get rid of disc one but keep disc two.
Hope that answers your question.

Does anyone please have specific directions via car from Hollywood to THAT beach at Point Dume in Malibu? Assume it's a drive then a walk. I'm here editing my first movie in LA and I NEED to make the pilgrimage.
I know the way but does anyone have the clever route?
Appreciated,

P.S. I'll send pics....
Throw Jeff Krueger a few bucks and he'll take you there his self. Keep an eye on him though.

Off the top of my head I couldn't tell you. Although the silver edition does come with it's own unique DVD menus.
Always good to keep it as a keep sake on POTA DVD history collection.
Al
That's pretty much my recommendation, too. I actually prefer the 35th Anniversary menu screens to the Blu-ray. I also prefer the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack to the 35th Anniversary edition over the Blu-ray, though the Blu-ray's DTS-HD Master Audio has better fidelity. The Blu-ray definitely has a better image, but the standard DVD isn't bad.
I think there might be some poster images or stills or something on the 35th Anniversary edition that aren't on the Blu-ray, but I haven't got that committed to memory.
Anyway, I think you should keep both.

Mostly, I was just wondering about the 'Extras.' So, if they're all repeated on the Blu-ray set from the 35th Anniversary Edition... ;) ... then I'll likely let it go. Thanks again-- Jim Alexander <.html <.html

From an employee at the venue:
"Films are screened in our Hi Def theater on Blu-Ray when available, otherwise on DVD."
So that's pretty much killed my enthusiasm. Since the Ziegfeld in 2008, I've seen PLANET on the big screen four times and BENEATH once- as a 35mm print. Think I'll pass on this as well as 2001 and THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, though for some reason seeing THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN as a DVD projection doesn't bother me as much as the other two would.
Coincidentally, they didn't seem opposed to the idea of a GO APE! festival over the course of one or two days, but unless there was something of a commitment from group members as far actually attending is concerned (and I don't mean 5 or 10 people either) I'm not going to take that idea any further with them. Especially if DVD projection is the only option.
Shane, I'm glad you asked that question. I would've been pissed making that trip and finding out it wasn't a 35mm print.
Chris L.
It's too bad they can't tell you whether it's the Blu-ray or the DVD. The presentation would be quite different. The 35th Anniversary DVD Edition has a browner transfer compared to the Blu-ray's, but I feel the Blu-ray is too bright, which is one of the reasons I'm hoping Fox is actually coming out with a new Blu-ray later this year -- which no one knows yet.
I felt the print shown at the Ziegfeld was awful and I would have preferred a DVD projection if a better print couldn't have been found, and in fact, I'm leery of most 35mm presentations. If a 35mm print is only two or three generations from the original negatives, then you're going to see greater detail than from a digital projection of the Blu-ray, but the Blu-ray is digitally cleaned up, so it'll look cleaner than any 35mm print, and if the 35mm print is some dupe print from an old interpositive, as the Ziegfeld's was, then you're going to see a muddier image with blocked up shadows. Not fun to look at.
I'd still go to this showing, if it was close to me, and I'd just try and forget what I'm actually looking at. Every movie I go see these days is a digital projection, and they look pretty good. I think actual 35mm prints are going the way of the dinosaur.

OK, at the risk of getting beaten up for even mentioning comic books, has anyone here read this "Dracula: The Company of Monsters" by Daryl Gregory? If so, this might give you an idea as to the quality of the story this BOOM! thing may have.
I'm much more interested in just what the story is than what the "artwork" will be like -- though I have no plans to order this thing.
But it's something POTA, so I can't help being curious.

Anyway, I think you should keep both. ============ That settles it! I'm hanging onto the 35th Anniversary Edition! :) Thanks again to all who took time and effort to assist me in this. Jim Alexander

Both sides of the argument have their points and misfires. Balance tends to be lost in these sorts of discussions, so it's good to see an article that presents both sides. The film certainly should have been better, and was expected to be considering the long wait, the director and the cast (well, the apes characters cast), but I enjoyed parts of it to be a little bit forgiving of its deficiencies. I just hope that Rise is better, although I'm fairly cynical it won't be that good, but we'll see.

No movie is perfect and PLANET has a lot of things wrong in it, One thing I think hurts the film are the self-conscious jokes like "Human see, human do," or the tribunal posing as "See no evil, Hear no... etc." <.html

The film certainly should have been better
The "thing" is really a half-assed production that was ill-conceived from the start and the history of Fox would be much improved if it had never been made.
I kneel on a beach before a pile of this thing's camera negatives, interpositives, protection negs, prints, DVDs, blu-ray's, posters, stills and whatever the hell else there is, and scream, "God damn you all to hell! Now, bury this crap in the nearest landfill! No, better, burn it!"
Every human on this planet should try and forget the 2001 debacle.

I don't get the sense that the writers (the staff of Moviefone UK!?) really know the genre as well as they should to propose a list like this.
They say of 2001, "Why It's Important: '2001: A Space Odyssey' is the granddaddy of all sci-fi films. Not in the sense that it was the genesis of the genre, but that it's the older, slower family figure that you're obligated to visit from time to time. Calling it slow is hardly a slight against the film, either -- it's just a simple truth. Stanley Kubrick's voyage into deep space is the embodiment of deliberate -- a movie that never, ever compromises its artistic vision. Yes, it may be a sluggish watch by today's breakneck standards, but it's an unquestionably incredible filmmaking accomplishment that pushed the sci-fi genre forward in irrevocable ways."
Of course it's not the "granddaddy of all sci-fi films" (and the proper term is SF films, not sci-fi) -- the granddaddy of all SF films is Georges Melies' 1902 film A TRIP TO THE MOON.
And 2001 did not push "the sci-fi genre forward in irrevocable ways." In fact, 2001 has largely been ignored by most SF filmmakers since it came out. It actually stands outside of the genre in general and was considered "a sluggish watch" on the very day it premiered. The thing they probably should have said is that it's perhaps the most misunderstood SF film of all time.
They say, "Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' is often considered the best science-fiction film of all time." Yeah, that's true, but not by anyone who really knows what they're talking about.
And while they have nice things to say about PLANET OF THE APES, "Why It's Important: Forget Tim Burton's lifeless remake of this classic piece of sci-fi; Franklin J. Schaffner's original film is a brilliant and thrilling variant on the 'transplanted man' themes that often crop up throughout the genre. 'Planet of the Apes' most memorable scenes have been referenced and re-purposed so many times in pop culture that it may be hard for a sci-fi newbie to go into it with a clean slate, but take that only as a testament to how beloved a film it is," I'd rather they go into detail as to why it's "brilliant and thrilling" rather than say it's important simply because it's so beloved. That's kind of a back-handed compliment.
A simple-minded article.

He will take care of you, Chris. And if this sculpt sells well, if we get enough buyers to pool together, he can be persuaded to sculpt Virdon as well, providing there is interest. His sculpting skills are phenomenal and definitely overshadow my meager skills. In addition, he is not a prima donna as Ada Chan is. It is only a matter of time before the world knows of his skills and then he will be out of our price range.

.htmlI know you love 2001 as much or more than POTA but im tired of all the revisionist history that 2001 gets now (as opposed to then 1968)that its so great and historical and important. I do agree with your general premise and criticisms this time. Yes Kubrick never compromised and gave in and kept his vision but its a vision that can put one to sleep. Yes the special effects are great. To me they are the granddaddy of special effects films not really Science Fiction story telling. Like J.Lee Thompson said " if it doesnt have characters that you care about it has nothing". The only character in 2001 that had a personality was the HAL computer.
Its a shame , I always felt that Battle for the POTA and the TV series dumbed down the Apes (you would say it started with Beneath and you would not be totally wrong) and permanantly made them more a young persons film series than just a good intelligent film series. That is what and where we are now, and Burtons film added to the historical childishness that the Apes were and are burdened with.
It will be a tough sell in November. Lets hope the public will give "Apes" another chance. Take care, John M.

.htmlARE the special effects THAT great in 2001? The Dawn Men look like men in suits, no matter what ACC had to say and sometimes in the opening scenes you can see ripples in the backdrop to the sound satge, like a big curtain. It's a seriously boring movie, really self indulgent, imho, and the book is a more rewarding experience. In terms of taking you to another world and getting you to suspend disbelief, Apes 1968 is a far superior film.

One of the undiscovered Roddy gems is a short-lived series called 'The Fantastic Journey', from 1977.He played a nuanced, interesting scientist and, as it's so close to the Apes series, if you close your eyes it sounds like Galen at times. It only had 10 episodes but I loved it.John, Scrolls.

I was 17-18 when it premiered and went to see it at my local mall when theaters were getting split up into home theater size venues and I saw nothing that I liked. To me it was the battle of Good and Evil that fans love. All films are about Good and Evil. It was silly to me and nothing more than what Lucas wanted, a trip back to his saturday morning serials but with better effects.
I was in the minority at that time but I didnt care. I loved arguing in college about these films and others. I preferred the Andromedia Strain-THX-1138-Westworld and Apes ofcourse. Even 2001 was in my view a leap above Star Wars in that it gave the viewer something to ponder. Alien was also boring but OK (Goldsmith).
The legacy of Star Wars was that it continued the interest in Sci-Fi that POTA and 2001 started and ofcourse the quality of film presentation in sound and vision which ironicaly was about just as good or better in the late 1950s. Take care, John M.

STAR WARS dumbed down what Kubrick was trying to do. The reason 2001 is sometimes boring is because Kubrick wanted to get across how boring long term space voyages would be.
2001 is a movie for adults. STAR WARS is a movie for kids. There's really little depth to STAR WARS, and although 2001's deliberately slow pace and lack of dialogue -- that way for interesting reasons if you bother to read what others have published about it -- can put you to sleep after you've seen it more than once (which it also does me, and in fact, I love falling asleep on the couch to it on a rainy weekend afternoon), STAR WARS is the far more boring movie. The old Universal FLASH GORDON serial is more interesting for me to watch than STAR WARS.
STAR WARS is comic book level pop culture junk, and in fact the old-time comic strip FLASH GORDON was actually the inspiration for STAR WARS in the first place. In the early nineties, George Lucas tried to hijack Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" (which Campbell went along with -- Why not? It helped sell his books!) and contended that the STAR WARS movies had greater depth than what's on the screen, but it was a lot of pretentious B.S.!

100% agee!
Except that I'll also add that STAR WARS pretty much sucks. The last three STAR WARS movies buried that series in a kid's sand box that Lucas, even if he wanted too, but obviously doesn't, will never dig out of.
OK now, enough of STAR WARS. I really can't stand the subject. It makes me crazy.

If you are interested in purchasing an unpainted resin cast of Burke sculpted by Alex Lopez, please send him $40 US through paypal: iconfigs@...
I am getting nervous that the longer we wait to get our minimum order in, the busier he will be. I see that he is getting snagged by other freaksboard frequenters for their headsculpts that are not ape related.
If you would like him to paint it for you, he can do so as well, but you will have to ask him what he charges. I have complete faith that he will achieve in capturing Burke's likeness.

.htmlThx, Jess. I'm onboard. Washing away Ada is a tough order. She left a pretty deep impression. Alex does have the talent for it.

Chris, Alex did not ask. I am asking for him. I want to make sure this Burke happens fast, so we can erase the bad Ada Chan memories. Plus the freaksboard people are beginning to snag him for commissions and that's going to threaten his time to spend on an ape related project.
