.htmlI actually first got hooked by Star Wars because of Chewie, as he looked like a really cool Ape.I think I read somewhere that Lucas was influenced by Apes on Chewie.I then got blitzed by the whole Star Wars experience, comics and all.But the light of Apes never went out, and when Star Wars paled (I thought Empire was pants!),Apes still shone as brightly and every little pic or paragraph that appeared was treasured like a gift from the Lawgiver. Now, in these info rich days, it's still nice to look back at a time when a small pic in a movie mag would set me up for a month! I was 17-18 when it premiered and went to see it at my local mall when theaters were getting split up into home theater size venues and I saw nothing that I liked. To me it was the battle of Good and Evil that fans love. All films are about Good and Evil. It was silly to me and nothing more than what Lucas wanted, a trip back to his saturday morning serials but with better effects.
> I was in the minority at that time but I didnt care. I loved arguing in college about these films and others. I preferred the Andromedia Strain-THX-1138-Westworld and Apes ofcourse. Even 2001 was in my view a leap above Star Wars in that it gave the viewer something to ponder. Alien was also boring but OK (Goldsmith).
> The legacy of Star Wars was that it continued the interest in Sci-Fi that POTA and 2001 started and of course the quality of film presentation in sound and vision, which ironicaly was about just as good or better in the late 1950s. Take care, John M.

.html Yeah, that's what I remember when I saw the commercial for "Star Wars". Chewie looked right out of POTA (thanks to the fast cut). Even the bandolier is in the same position as the gorillas'. Lucas never really copped to POTA being an inspiration for Chewie, just that he was based on his sheepdog Indiana (nothing more or less than a well-trained sheepdog could do). But he did credit POTA as an example of sustaining a sci-fi film franchise and said he wanted Fox to do "Star Wars" because of their experience with POTA. So Lucas learned the lesson from POTA that Fox didn't, because it took a lot of convincing for them to do "Star Wars".
"Star Wars" I was never too wild about, except from the filmmaking aspect (the FX, the Joseph Campbell myth stuff) but I enjoyed them as the big movies of the moment. The closest I got to being a fan was "Empire", which I thought was cool as a sequel and reminded me of POTA (the downbeat ending, that a sci-fi sequel could be a continuation of a previous movie, not just doing the same story over). Whatever enthusiasm I had for "Star Wars" has been killed by Lucas' recent attempts.

Hello!
I've been a visitor to your site for a while; as a POTA fan, I enjoy and
appreciate it very much!
Just thought you'd be interested to know that on Sunday July 31, my cult
film co-op, Exhumed Films, is presenting a GO APE marathon, featuring all
five POTA films shown back to back on the big screen. This is an official
screening, as we've got authorization & have paid rental fees through
Criterion Pictures, who handle repertory screenings of the APES films for
20th Century Fox.
The GO APE marathon will take place at the International House's Ibrahim
Theater in Philadelphia, a state-of-the-art screening room located on the
University of Pennsylvania campus. Tickets to the event are $20, and will
be available from our website in the near future. Show starts at 11:00 am
on July 31 and will run until approximately 8pm.
Anyway, if you get a chance to mention the show on your site, I'd appreciate
it. We have a pretty decent following of fans & often sell out our events
(the theater holds 350 people), but any press is welcomed! Speaking of
press, here's a brief article about the show which also includes links to
our website & facebook page:

I'm an hour and a half from Philly -- now I'm not sure I want to go on a relatively expensive roadtrip all the way to Bethel Woods (5 hours each way and a hotel room; although the Woodstcock museum sounds cool) for just PotA and a discussion, when I can wait a few months to see all 5 films (in 35 mm).
I mean, I all but have to go to the Philly showing. Bethel, I don't know any more. I'd save money *and* April 23rd is the debut of the new season of Doctor Who.
Still, this is a good problem to have.
Thanks for forwarding that Hunter. I, too, am a big fan of your site.

Doesn't seem all that amazing to me. Why do you think there's another APES movie on the way? As John Landis says in one of his trailer commentaries, the milking of the planet of the apes continues.

Does this go back to the mono sound debate? I think that was you, and the reason I confronted it was I disagreed and I hoped you'd argue your point more and maybe you'd change my mind, but then you just took offense and left. Oh, well. I think it was you, but I honestly don't dwell on these things, hence I forget about them. This isn't very important, nor is the subject of comic books, I might add.

.htmlVery good. I did storm off like a child simply because "people who think they know it all are annoying to those of us that do" :) I had a large education in audio and audio is more exciting to me than the visual so I tend to pontificate and get argumentative. From what I remember I would like to hear on any Apes soundtrack the original Mono and the hyped up 5.1if its done well. Chace surround destroyed ant notion that a multitrack can be obtained from mono. I happen to like stereo better it opens up the soundfield and much more can be manipulated with stereo than mono. The mono offered on the apes films is in general awfull and to me a folddown of the fake stereo that was made from the original mono to begin with.
The problem with Planet 68 is that the music, effects and dialouge cannot be seperated, its all on one track(searching will find the original masters and then something like the sequels can be made. Thats why their is no isolated track for POTA68. Anytway take care John M. PS, Im Greek and Jewish so ofcourse ill argue and whine until I get my way, but I know whats fact and what isnt. Bye again...

I think it was you, but I honestly don't dwell on these things, hence I forget about them. This isn't very important, nor is the subject of comic books, I might add.

.htmlGuys Alex needs to make sure he gets the minimum of 10 orders for this to make it worth his while. This is very generous, considering a lot of the "established" artists out there are asking 20 or 30 minimum before they even take the commission, if nobody's going to pay them up front for the $600 or so they ask for to do the sculpt. And definitely, we should strike before the iron is hot. We need to make sure that he sells as many heads of Burke as possible so that he can be rest assured that there are enough ape fans out there...before we approach him to make Virdon.
And I did have a Galen, but looking at him now I think I can do better. I never really finished him, and if I remember correctly, he needs a lot of improvement. I may just start from scratch...
Anyway, for those who have not seen Alex's work yet, here are his new sculpts (1:6 scale of Starsky and Hutch)
Jess.
I will post photos of Burke as soon as Alex is done. I have total faith in Alex.

Weird.
That looks like Kim's makeup but it's not Kim.
The brown eyes are a giveaway. Zira type nose.
If I had to guess, that's either a journalist or Kim's
double. But that's only a guess. It could be an extra
or just head with glass eyes, though I couldn't say for sure.
Vet's assistant? Maybe, maybe not. That's a head

That's a head scratcher!

Joyce Haber was a New York-born journalist who appeared in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes playing the role of Zelda. A former child-actor, Haber joined 'Time' magazine as a researcher and went on to write a syndicated gossip column from the late '60s to the late '70s. Like journalists James Bacon and Army Archerd, she was given a small role on-screen by producer
Arthur P. Jacobs, in order to promote the Apes

In other words, the 1960s! You don't know what you missed! Like seeing PLANET in its original release. Oh, the good ol' days.
By the way, when I think "old stuff," it's usually the 1930s! Back in the '60s, most movies on TV were stuff from the '30s, '40s and '50s. My elementary school used to show us the Buster Crabbe "Flash Gordon" serials in the gym during the summer, and of course KING KONG popped up all the time, then there was the Universal monsters. When I remember the '60s, I also remember a lot more.
Be honest now, how many here can actually sit through a 1930's black & white movie (not the more famous ones) without quickly getting bored and changing the channels?

No, nothing about PLANET, but it does look like Fox is finally starting to get more out on Blu-ray. TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH and 50th Anniversary Editions of THE HUSTLER and THE COMMANCHEROS are coming out in May in "Blu-ray Book" packaging, and PATTON is being reissued in a "Blu-ray Book" edition (though probably the same transfer as before).
This Blu-ray Book thing looks as if it's catching on, and I suspect that if there is a new Blu-ray of PLANET this November, it'll be one of these Blu-ray Book Editions. That'll make buying PLANET again on Blu-ray a little more attractive.
Gee, I sound just like Krueger.

I think it's a mistake on the part of the writer.
Since the line is in CONQUEST, I think a better title than "Rise of the Apes" is "The Birth of the Planet of the Apes," but I could see just using that for the trailer and posters and ads:

Although I don't agree with that "American Thinker" article that the remakes of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and THE THING are superior to the originals (a truly stupid thing to write), I do like what they said about PLANET OF THE APES.
3) Planet of the Apes (1968) - Start at the end, the single best ending in movie history. If you have never seen it and don't know the ending, try not to spoil it for yourself. A third or even fifth viewing will yield things you did not catch before, clever social commentary (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil -- if you've never caught that glimpse it's classic). Tremendously well done and holds against modern films despite its age. Great acting throughout the cast, especially to Charlton Heston and Kim Hunter. A truly great American movie -- 5 stars and a must see if you never have -- only to be followed by the worst sequels of all time.
Well, I don't on that "worst sequels of all time" bit, but "A truly great American movie" and "a must see" -- WINNING!

I remember a Poll done when the Apes were at their height and Conquest was voted almost better than "Planet" in a couple of Rags back in '74. Marvel magazine and in a Newsweek article where they said Sam Jaffe was to play the Lawgiver in the next Apes movie and that their was to be a sixth movie where Taylor was to arrive. Fun times and reading, even if slightly off. Take Care, John M.
