Ok.....he referred to "Independence Day" as a great film and had it ranked at #5. He must not be much of an "American Thinker" b/c only a person born with a dominant or even a recessive idiot gene could like that dung-heap of a movie.
If he or she or they were really smart they wouldn't be wasting their time writing lists.
Totally agree with you about INDEPENDENCE DAY.
Want to see a really good SF film. Go see LIMITLESS. Just saw it.

I know it wouldnt do nothing but I sent an e-mail about a month ago to Fox to call the new apes "The Birth of the Planet of the Apes". You see we do think alike...Take care John M.
There's someone here that wants to know Fox's email address(es).

.htmlI think "of the Apes" would be a good series of titles. "Rise of the Apes", the director said he wanted to show the conquest in #2 so maybe "Age of the Apes" or something (I think "Conquest of the Apes" would be too close to the previous title). And etc. They could call the last one "Planet of the Apes".
But Fox might decide they need the whole POTA title. It sounds like they are really scratching their heads about how to promote it (having a contest with graphic arts students). Maybe that's why they pushed it back.

I think it's a mistake on the part of the writer.
Since the line is in CONQUEST, I think a better title than "Rise of the Apes" is "The Birth of the Planet of the Apes," but I could see just using that for the trailer and posters and ads:

.html I tune out reviewers who say "the worst sequels of all time" or "the best movie ever made". Have they seen every movie ever made or every sequel ever made? I guess they liked "Transformers 2" more than "Escape" so who needs their opinion?

Wow. That "worst sequels of all time" comment really stung. The reviewer does realize that there's more "clever social commentary" right? Maybe not. <.html

| Subject: "Rise of the Apes" and "A.I." |
.htmlSteven Spielberg's sci-fi movie "A.I." comes to blu-ray soon and there's a review up at "DVD Beaver":
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_reviews53/a.I._artificial_intelligence_blu-ray.htm
I bring it up because actor Tyler Labine made a comparison between it and "Rise of the Apes" which took me by surprise but I can see what he means. Both deal with a creation of science that moves into a human home but proves too dangerous and is thrust into the cruel world where they are second class citizens, bonding with his own kind.
"A.I." was Spielberg's homage to Kubrick. It was a story Kubrick wanted to do, his return to sci-fi after the storied trilogy of "Dr. Strangelove", "2001" and "A Clockwork Orange", but decided it was more up Spielberg's alley. It got mixed reviews (and damn it's long!) but it was an interesting flick. Spielberg was as good as anyone in the 2000's for doing sci- fi with his dark trilogy ("A.I.", "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds"), kind of an inverse of his earlier "happy" films "Close Encounters" and "E.T.". ("A.I."? "E.T."? Now cover your left eye and read the third line from the bottom). The reviewer at DVD Beaver says "A.I." is a misunderstood film.
Tyler Labine plays Franklin, Caesar's human friend at the primate facility he is taken to after he gets in trouble. Here are both interviews with him again:

Subject: [pota] "Rise of the Apes" and "A.I."
Steven Spielberg's sci-fi movie "A.I." comes to blu-ray soon and there's a review up at "DVD Beaver":
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-ray_reviews53/a.I._artificial_intelligence_blu-ray.htm

Anyway, Star Wars is what it is and what Lucas meant it to be. I was first introduced to "A New Hope" when I was just five and instantly became a fan. But, as time went on, I liked POTA more an Star Wars less. I believe that Lucas succeeded primarily due to the visuals. Though the story is the kind of generic yarn that many like, I still think that it would have fallen flat on it's face had it been full of rocket-ships and bad aliens in shiny silver jumpsuits. But Lucas understood that visuals are important to us primates and took advantage of it. As far as the visuals, I must say that there are few movies or tv shows that can match Star Wars. The ships, costuming, environments, etc. look really good....with a few
exceptions. Too bad it just wasn't deeper and more thought-provoking. BTW, if you read Joseph Campbell, you'll find that many of the themes found in various myths are not that deep anyway....just like Star Wars.
From: "Haristas@..." <Haristas@...> To: pota@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tue, March 15, 2011 9:53:58 AM Subject: [pota] Re: FW: Google Alert - "planet of the apes"
Personally, I've always thought the 2001 outer space effects are ponderous and not much different to Space 1999.I love the book, dislike the movie and enjoyed Jack Kirby's comics (blast, I used the 'c' word). For me, the first Star Wars sets the benchmark for space ships.I think Apes was very clever in the way it all but avoided such model work. John, Scrolls.
STAR WARS dumbed down what Kubrick was trying to do. The reason 2001 is sometimes boring is because Kubrick wanted to get across how boring long term space voyages would be.
2001 is a movie for adults. STAR WARS is a movie for kids. There's really little depth to STAR WARS, and although 2001's deliberately slow pace and lack of dialogue -- that way for interesting reasons if you bother to read what others have published about it -- can put you to sleep after you've seen it more than once (which it also does me, and in fact, I love falling asleep on the couch to it on a rainy weekend afternoon), STAR WARS is the far more boring movie. The old Universal FLASH GORDON serial is more interesting for me to watch than STAR WARS.
STAR WARS is comic book level pop culture junk, and in fact the old-time comic strip FLASH GORDON was actually the inspiration for STAR WARS in the first place. In the early nineties, George Lucas tried to hijack Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" (which Campbell went along with -- Why not? It helped sell his books!) and contended that the STAR WARS movies had greater depth than what's on the screen, but it was a lot of pretentious B.S.!

I'm going to make another prediction:
Later this year, before RISE opens, Fox will announce that they're so pleased with how well the movie has turned out that they're already planning the sequel.
Whether or not a sequel actually gets a go will depend on the B.O. for RISE, but a sequel will already be in the beginning planning stages.

I heard a really interesting guy talking about
Myths on the radio last night. He said Myth
allows you to talk about Truths through the
ages without other stuff getting in the way.
Conversely, religion distorts Truths over time.
And if you can get people to believe something
ridiculous, you can get them to commit atrocities.
This makes a lot of sense, in that If someone told
you some of the stuff in religions today, you'd call 911.
It ties into something I wrote a while back (see Tiiism
in the Urban Dictionary) about religion and Truths.

God forbid you have some job security and the masses blame you for everything from communism to destroying America. Regan did a great job of propaganda, a former civil servant and union leader himself...I dont believe that you should have to have 10 years of college to have a decent wage. Anyway its all over now. One foolish war of recent years whipes out one hundred years of prosperity. Suits are the antithisis of civil servants. If you have the funds and you are a TV series fan...you can help me erase the ugly Ada Chan memories. If at least 20 fans buy this...that would be way cool...cause I know we are dwindling in number as the years progress...

Primarily, I want to see a good film that's aimed at an intelligent audience, even if it flopped. I'd rather one great film to remember than several mediocre films aimed at children and the popcorn munchers. Still, the best that'll happen is likely to be something in between, and maybe, and a big maybe, a few reasonable sequels will flow after that. Still, even at the lower levels of my expectations, I suppose there'll be something in the film to hold onto, but I'd rather aim high.

Burton's POTA was a critical disaster and while it did not become the
blockbuster movie Fox had hoped it would be, it actually made a tidy
sum. But the backlash in the reviews of both the critics and the general
population was so bad that Fox knew they would not have movie viewers
coming back for more, and that is what really killed the franchise at
that point. A case of "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame
on me."
It's true that a movie that gets rave reviews from the critics, but bomb
financially are not movies that studios want to put out. But even they
realize that over time these movies will always have some degree of
marketability. Because there is always some audience for a good movie,
just not as big as some of the flashy, stylistic ones.
So I think I'd rather have a critically sound modest hit than another
2001 mess.

This little tidbit from the article is interesting:
"According to Exhumed Films' Dan Fraga, "as of August 1, 20th Century Fox is putting all the original Apes movies on moratorium due to the release of the upcoming James Franco prequel. Thus, this will be your last chance to see Planet of the Apes and all of its sequels in any U.S. theater for at least a few years."
I wonder if that's true, and if so, if this is something that should be attended -- if possible? For me, it would mean taking several days off from work (at least three), driving "alot," renting motel rooms, and then seeing something where I have no idea of the actual print quality, the quality of the projection, the crowd -- if there is any --, watching PLANET at eleven in the morning, then spending the rest of the day watching the sequels, which I have "issues" with.
Yeah, I'd probably enjoy it. At least I have a few months to decide.
Getting back to the moratorium thing, I wonder if that will also apply to satellite/cable showings? Maybe that's why the APES films have been on so often lately.

I'm going to make another prediction: RISE will get an R rating from the MPAA for its violence at the end, but Fox will want the kids, so they'll edit it down to a PG-13.

.htmlAgree with you 100%. But the public, and I dont have to explain this, is into neutered men with sexual problems and comic book heroes with sexual problems. Some are good time killers but the constant catering to the under 25 year olds is getting very tired and dangerous. To me it seems that the young ones go to the movies and the movie is the last thing on their mind. The older people ,over 40, tend to buy the dvd or according to a poll I came across-Blurays. They dont go to see films in very large number for the reasons I stated. Wait till its on HBO, why bother?
I dont pretend to have an answer but times have changed since I was a child in the sixties and as far as films go the golden 70s. My kids all approaching 30 in general cant watch a film unless its like all the drivel today. They are extremely smart also, and im not saying this cause their mine.
Fox is in a precarious situation with Apes but their is alot of ideas in the Apes well to make a good movie that can appeal to everyone just like the originals. Burtons movie ,I hope, did not destroy the Apes Mythology or good Ape film making in general. Leaving the Zeigfeld theatre on opening day was amazing. The line was close to a 1000ft long, went around the corner twice and bought back many memories. I pray for the lines again but with a movie that deserves it. I hope the public will not hold a grudge.
I personally just want the original films available on Bluray with perfect SOUND and vision. The current edition is very good but it can be better, and the current POTA68 restoration is proof of that. Sorry for going on, take care, by the way what is all this talk about Virdons head and doll stuff. To me this is part of the problem. Please dont attack me but I was never into dolls and figuines, sorry if anybody is insulted or im sorry for being out of the loop. Bye, John M.

.htmlAgree. But the Blu-ray will put back the good stuff. The budget is lower than Burtons and with ten years passing its a good amount lower so maybe it will be an "R" film. That would be great simply because life is NC-17 and anything near this will atleast be an honest film. Life is not PG-13 but most crap films are...John M.

When it was a comic it further made me loathe them. Its my problem and it just show whats important to each individual. Keep the information comming James, Take care, John M.

.html With Fox's announcement that "Apes" is moving to Aug. 5th, that pretty much cuts the wait time in half. It's only a little over a month later than the original June date. More interestingly, it puts it a little over a week after the 10th anniversary of POTA2001. A new "Ape" decade has begun (hopefully).
Of course that means we'll be getting trailers, images, etc. a lot sooner. We have to get our nails done, buy some nice clothes and get ready. And it begs the biggest question of all: What if they move it to April 5?! <.html

.htmlI remember when Burton's film was coming out Fox refused to let books (like "POTA Revisited") use photos from the films (I guess behind the scenes pictures were different). I guess the basic idea is concentrate on the new, don't taint it with the old.
Recently there was a controversy where people wanted to see "Tron" before the sequel but it was on moratorium. Old "Tron" DVDs were selling for a pretty penny on e-bay. But the moratorium seems to end when the flick hits DVD. "Tron" will hit DVD the same time as it's sequel. When POTA2001 hit DVD, so did the TV show. But I don't know what the plan is if "Rise" is a hit and they plan sequels.
That August 1st date is interesting now that "Rise" has been moved to Aug. 5th.

Those who thought Fox had pushed back "Rise of the
Apes" to Thanksgiving to give the FX more time were...right. But now things seem
to be going well and the studio feels it will benefit from being the final
"event" picture of the summer.
A Fox rep says, "The movie looks terrific and we
think we can capitalize on the summer playtime by being the last tentpole of the
summer".
Fox has had success with sci-fi in August before.
In fact "Rise" hits 10 days before the 25th Anniversary of one of my all-time
favorite films, Fox's remake of "The Fly". The first time I ever saw POTA in a
theater was on a double bill with that.
And since they moved "Rise of the Apes" tonight, I
couldn't resist. ; )

I suspect this BOOM! thing isn't going to make some here happy in regards to "canon." I suspect it's going to adhere to the more "loopy" but it'll probably try to mess with things.

OK, it's been nearly an hour since I opened this post and I've been taking that time to try and compose myself -- because I don't like this news!
I'm not ready to hit the panic button, but what this tells me is that this movie may be less than what I was hoping for. My positive vibe has suddenly become a little less positive and I strongly suspect that this movie may very well be on the level of the X-FILES and X-MEN movies that Fox has churned out.
A late November release said to me that Fox may have seen RISE as something of a prestige picture, but this move to August says to me that the studio, despite whatever statements it's making, wants to just get it out there and get back whatever money it can sooner rather than later. I'm not saying they may think they have a weak picture, but that it's not all that they hoped for either.
I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic. Now, a lot more will depend on what we see when the first trailer hits. I'm still feeling good about this movie, but not as good as yesterday.
At least if there's going to be a new Blu-ray of the original, I have less time to wait -- unless that doesn't come out until RISE goes to Blu-ray.

I've noticed a lot of comment on the 'net that
Fox's move of "Rise of the Apes" to August is a way of "dumping it". I don't see
it that way. To me August has been where the studios have put the more
interesting summer movies, the ones that might get lost in the big budget blood
and thunder of May, June and July. By August people are tired of the
"Transformers" and super hero kind of movies and want more. Usually the August
releases aren't the biggest hits of the summer but they can still do well. I
don't have the statistics right here but that's my take.
I think August goes with what we've heard of
"Rise", that it's a quieter movie with heart. But it still has the advantages
that summer offers: kids out of school, a place to get out of the heat, and
people won't have to stop their Christmas shopping to see it. It's the same time
that Fox released POTA2001, which did well at the box office (might have done
better if it was good) and if nothing else is a proven time of year when
people will go to an "Ape" movie.
There's really not much playing against it at
that time (which includes another Roddy remake, "Fright Night") so if it's good
it will have room to thrive. And if nothing else, we won't have to wait as long
to find out. <.html <.html

If I didn't know any better I would have thought I was being stoked to 20th Century Fox. LOL!
It's a master plan by Fox in trying to ruin my vacations! LOL! Too funny. :o)
Well anyway, whatever they finally decide I wish them all the luck. August, November, makes no difference to me.

Those who thought Fox had pushed back "Rise of the Apes" to Thanksgiving to give the FX more time were...right. But now things seem to be going well and the studio feels it will benefit from being the final "event" picture of the summer.

Fox has had success with sci-fi in August before. In fact "Rise" hits 10 days before the 25th Anniversary of one of my all-time favorite films, Fox's remake of "The Fly". The first time I ever saw POTA in a theater was on a double bill with that.

The Sound of Music is really the film that got FOX on its feet, but those previously mentioned films almost K.O.d Fox again. Well, if all goes well with Rise - or at least it's not too bad a film - then I would want to see the sequel deal with the evolution of the apes into some sort of civilisation and the devolving of the humans into savagery, if it hasn't been dealt with by the first film. I'd then like to see some human from our times find himself in such a planet... Oh wait, that's the Burton film. Please don't hurt me! However, I'd still like it to go along those lines, but maybe without the executive suits meddling, without the story being watered down to cater for the slow and easily distracted, and it's best to end with the usual "Hollywoodisation" look of characters (savage humans shouldn't have perfect orthodontic teeth, for instance, nor collagen lips...), but then I suppose I have to be realistic...
As to the topic, I wouldn't mind seeing... dun dun dah... one of those yellow school buses that ferry the children of the US to and fro between home and school. Yes, we must have one of those in the film; a bit battered and rusty, of course.
BTW, please, no telepathy. That's one thing I couldn't care about in Beneath was the use of telepathic powers by the mutant humans. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, but I can't stand that sort of thing being foisted upon science fiction works (this also goes for Deanna Troi of Star Trek and the like, too). Keep that stuff to pure fantasy or superhero stuff, where it's more suited. I know, there's some fantastical stuff in science fiction and Planet of the Apes is far fetched enough, but don't stretch it too far. Mind you, in the book, which I love, the machines that allow humans to speak the memories of long past generations was a bit of a stretch too far. Oh, to be consistent...

I could see the 3rd part of a trilogy as their "Battle" (though done better) with the aftermath and where do they go from there with apes in charge.
Other films, or maybe another trilogy could take place thousands of years in the future. As I've said, I see "Rise" as their version of "Escape", not in story but in tone.

Here's how the tent-pole summer
ends:
July 22 - "Captain America" (here's the brand new trailer, best summer trailer I've seen so
far):
July 29 - "Cowboys vs. Aliens"
Aug. 5th - "Apes" vs. "Smurfs" (and those Smurfs
can get pretty nasty)
Doesn't sound like freshman competition to me.
"Apes" is still in the thick of it.

.htmlI agree the Captain America trailer looks superb---so good, in fact, I'm a smidge worried it'll be such a massive hit it could swamp Apes.Apes should trounce those mini Avatars, no problemo. It's funny, had the original release date for Rise been August, I'd have been totally content, as it's a perfect slot. It's the changes of date that have left me twitchy.Just shows how much we really do CARE that Rise succeeds.John, Scrolls.
