No, the Swamp Apes only appeared in the Malibu series.

I live in NYC and would be interested in going....
Anyone going?
NYC DAVE..
I'm seriously thinking about it, but haven't really checked into the drive time and all else. I need to do a Google maps thing and all that, and then how much time off from work I'll need, etc. I'm just glad it's a few months away.

If you are in NYC you could take the train to 30th St. Station and walk over or take a cab to 37th.

.htmlI know the opinions on 'canonical Apes' will differ wildly and I almost regretted using the word 'canon' as soon as I posted the message, because that word, in fandom, is almost Biblical in its heretical potential.I think the crucial thing is that, in whatever medium, the essence of Apes, whatever that is (I can't define it, I can only recognise it when I see it) needs to be there and built on.To be fair, there were, imho, even parts of the Burton movie that nearly got this right, it was just packaged in a clunky, unappealing look.I know my 'canon' is somebody else's peashooter, so I'll just say that most of the Malibu crap aint canon in my world.John, Scrolls.

Zanuck almost sunk FOX again with Star, Hello Dolly, Dr. Dolittle(APJAC), etc. in the years 1967-1970. The Sound of Music is really the film that got FOX on its feet, but those previously mentioned films almost K.O.d Fox again. Apes along with Fantastic Voyage, Patton , French Connection and others are what really got Fox out of the rabbit hole. You are correct though in general, but Cleopatra did by the end of the 60s turn a profit, didnt it? Take care, John M.
Don't forget TORA! TORA! TORA! That losy "alot" of money too, but it was the Board of Directors in New York that only took the short view and got old man Zanuck to fire young Dick, then the Old Man gets pushed out. If the money behind Fox had just stuck with Dick Zanuck then Fox would have eventually had JAWS, but then they did get STAR WARS and Fox is still with us. Aren't we all happy about that?

Zanuck almost sunk FOX again with Star, Hello Dolly, Dr. Dolittle(APJAC), etc. in the years 1967-1970. The Sound of Music is really the film that got FOX on its feet, but those previously mentioned films almost K.O.d Fox again. Apes along with Fantastic Voyage, Patton , French Connection and others are what really got Fox out of the rabbit hole. Here's how the tent-pole summer ends:
July 22 - "Captain America" (here's the brand new trailer, best summer trailer I've seen so far):
July 29 - "Cowboys vs. Aliens"
Aug. 5th - "Apes" vs. "Smurfs" (and those Smurfs can get pretty nasty)
Doesn't sound like freshman competition to me. "Apes" is still in the thick of it.
I said before that if Fox delayed RISE again then "watch out," but moving the release back up is more disturbing than panic inducing, and I suspect it has less to do with RISE itself than with a studio that's desperately trying to get its release schedule in order. The "suits" don't know what they're doing.
There's trouble at Fox. Not great trouble, but the studio isn't the healthiest place right now.

Well, Fox's statements say they are specifically positioning it as the last tent-pole of the summer. Maybe they felt that was the earliest they could schedule it to do post-production right and still make summer. As I said, it's only about a week difference from when POTA2001 was released and that was considered a tent-pole.
Oh, it's a tent-pole picture for Fox all right, but moving it twice now just shows there's a certain level of desperation at the studio. Fox needs hits and they seem to have faith in RISE -- they just better not move it again or it's going to get really embarrassing.

BTW, please, no telepathy. That's one thing I couldn't care about in Beneath was the use of telepathic powers by the mutant humans. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, but I can't stand that sort of thing being foisted upon science fiction works (this also goes for Deanna Troi of Star Trek and the like, too). Keep that stuff to pure fantasy or superhero stuff, where it's more suited. I know, there's some fantastical stuff in science fiction and Planet of the Apes is far fetched enough, but don't stretch it too far. Mind you, in the book, which I love, the machines that allow humans to speak the memories of long past generations was a bit of a stretch too far. Oh, to be consistent...

BTW, please leave the entire mutant thing to the Paul Dehn era of POTAdom. POTA is about apes and men -- normal mankind. The entire mutant thing is sooooo non-Boullian. Know your Fox, T.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC saved Fox, and although PLANET was a blockbuster, it wasn't anywhere near the blockbuster BUTCH CASSIDY was for Fox the next year. But even still those movies couldn't save a studio that sunk so much cash into mega bombs like DOCTOR DOLITTLE, STAR! and TORA! TORA! TORA!

Western NC (near Asheville). All I need to do is take one Hwy to I-95, then just keep on that until I get to Philly and follow the instructions on the website (though, I'll also do a Google maps thing and even look at the route on Google Earth). Right now, without having looked into at all (I'm lazy), I figure around six or seven hours of driving, which isn't too bad. I've driven from where I am to South Florida in a day (14 hours) with only stops to piss and get gasoline, so I can handle this, it's just getting the time off from work that I'm unsure about. I wish this was the week of July 4th. I have that entire week off.

The official word is they moved it out of June because the CG needed more time. Now supposedly things are going well. I don't blame them for not going head to head with the big movies; "Rise" isn't that kind of film. They put it in the closest slot that was open.
As far as it being a prestige picture if it came out at Christmas, it's closest cousin as far as Oscars/acclaim would be "District 9" and that came out in July. Ultimately all that matters is what the film is, not speculation. In 4 months all our questions will be answered.
Yeah, I have my problems with Fox but I trust the word of guys like Lithgow when they are that enthused. Fox could screw it up after the fact but hopefully they are not that nuts when they know they have a special thing.

I did eventualy go and see it in the city at one time in March so my facts and memories got all meshed together. Thinking more about it I am sometimes thinking it was the combo of Planet/Beneath in early 71 I saw in NYC but I thought that was only a drive-in event. I was 8-11 years old and my memory is getting foggy. Not to make excuses but I was in the middle of a diatribe with certain noble prize winners on this site.
I did see the rest in NYC near or at premier and then in theaters and drive-ins in the Long Island suburbs as it moved ever so slowly east. I saw my mistake but didnt bother to fix it since my Mother saw it and that was close enough for the moment, I apologize. Good call. John M

It may be premature and it might have been discussed before, but suppose there IS a sequel. Where would you like to see it go? Should it go straight to the Battle era, or explore the period between Conquest and Battle. Or something else entirely?
I'd have been happy to see Rise begin where Burton's film left off i.e. a present day, seriously evolved ape society, complete with ape cops, doctors, plumbers etc.. But I may be in a minority on that one.
For Rise 2, I've got only a few requests: Mutants, Mendez and the Statue of Liberty in the sand please. Oh, and a telepathically-induced cameo by Nova. It's not a lot to ask.
Get thinking folks, you never know who might be reading this stuff.

The words of praise from the likes of Lithgow, no matter that he is a reasonable actor, only counts if he's actually had a past record of criticising films he's been involved in prior to their coming out. It's in his interest to be enthusiastic about a film he's in, for it helps massage those who might want to recruit him for other films in the future, and might not want someone too difficult if they can help it. Has Lithgow in the past criticised a film to be released that he's been involved in, and if so, are there any examples?
I'll take his enthusiasm as much as I'll take the enthusiasm of any other actor otherwise, whether I respect them or not. I'm not saying that Lithgow is embellishing or lying (I've not worked on the film, so what do I know?), but I won't be basing too much on his praise, either.
I think that the move of dates might (note might) indicate some lack of confidence by Fox, but then again, their executives aren't too trustworthy when it comes to tastes and what's good. Maybe you're right and the move can be seen as advantageous... but every silver lining has its cloud. ;)

I don't want to start another heated debate, but this is one of the BIG reasons I don't care for comic books -- stylistically they are trite in the extreme, a formula endlessly repeated and pandering to juvenile sensibilities. Everything is so interchangable. Is there really any major difference between the stories of Batman, Spiderman, Superman or the Fantastic Four and countless others? You can easily predict what the story lines will be, the character arcs, the simpleminded good vs. over-the-top evil themes. And this isn't just limited to the printed "comic book" or graphic novel. The James Bond movies are basically live action comic books, and why I got bored with that franchise decades ago.
BUT.... if this is what you like, more power to 'ya! I love it when the guys on "The Big Bang Theory" go to the comic book store. I've gone to comic book stores! But then I use to go to look at the SF geeky action figures, models and other stuff

You all know I'm not a believer to the "Timeloop/Paul Dehn" fundamentalist dogma that James and others adhere to. I'm the progressive liberal alternate timeline type. Therefore, I believe there are many "lost worlds" of POTAdom that can be invented to take place in the two thousand year history of the "original timeline." It's also true that the original Fox version of APES (as opposed to the Boulle novel) takes place on earth, and it's a large world, so you could have stories about a planet of the apes set in future Japan ( A future nuclear wasteland? Not too hard to believe.) They're you go! Gorillas in wild armor, wielding Samurai swords. Teenage mutant Ninja gorillas... sounds like comic book material to me.
But I've gotten the impression the BOOM! people are good Timeloop fundamentalists, so there could be a big canonical controversy coming soon to a comic book store near you.

Like anything if the writer didn't specifically state it, it is not an element of the story. What is an element of the story is Caesar's line in Battle. It is pretty straight forward.

It's not everyday that you get a sapient pregnant ape and her equally sapient mate turning up at your circus to hide out. So many questions to ask, so many things to ponder, particularly if you're like Armando, who seemed the imaginative and thoughtful type.

The writer's work is open to interpretation as long as it fits. We can't say Zira is a blue elephant but other things are less obvious.

Yes plenty of time to chat if you're just hiding out. But Armando was running a circus. I doubt he would have time to just to sit around and shoot the breeze with about Ape fashions. And if they did, why leave out the elephant in the room, the destruction of the earth? Kind of a big omission.
Like anything if the writer didn't specifically state it, it is not an element of the story. What is an element of the story is Caesar's line in Battle. It is pretty straight forward. <.html

Thats why even though I loved talking about this or that about Apes, the interviews and articles(Like Cinamafantastique) get in the way. Most of us very lucky Apes fans who were their from the start and soaked it all up know how it was meant to end. Its a circle that never ends. The writers at that time were more cynical having gone through depression of the 30s, WWII, Communist hearings, Korean war, and the sixties revolutions. They were a smarter group in my view and knew that man is nothing more than an ape with cloths and could not keep his baser instincts in check.
Thats where comics come in. They feed the more childlike hope of younger minded folks who seem to have no experience with life and everything will work out. The good guy always wins. I wish this was true but its not. Not all comics are like this ofcourse but this was the birth cry of modern day comics(Superman) that justice and good will out-it doesnt- unfortunatly. Its the opposite and thats what the screen Ape movies were all about-truth. This is so. If you want to "Live The Dream" then
early is on time, and on time is late. And never,
But Never, make trouble on a set. Only the
producer can't be fired. There are exceptions.
Talent, that either want to get fired or don't care.
The director, unless the producer fires him. And
crew with a strong union. You can fire them, but
it's usually more trouble than it's worth, and most
are happy to sit around getting paid to play cards
until they actually have to work. And waiting can
be the hardest work of all. But never bad mouth
the project. Remember the Oscars are only the
Academy's popularity contest, and not what's best.

I'm sure there have been comics (which is really an awful name for them) that have tried to elevate the "art form" (as they say), but it's dominated by endless superhero retreads. If is wasn't for how much they have saturated the pop culture, I won't be such a hostile critic of them, but it's just become too much over the past decade or two. To see how the major Hollywood studios step all over each other to make the next movie based on yet another comic book hero or graphic novel is for me a very sad cultural thing. Very sad indeed.
Don't worry though, I don't plan on being a super negative troll when the BOOM! thing escapes. I'm actually hoping it turns out well and all those here eager for it are happy.

Again, it would seem to be in "much" better shape than the new "X-Men", which just recently finished shooting and has an early June debut. "Apes" finished shooting back in September.
The article also mentions that big summer releases spilling into August are becoming common (just as they've spread earlier and earlier into May to the point where the first big summer movie, "Thor", opens the first week of May; technically I don't think that's even summer).

From The Digital Bits:
Warner has just informed us that they'll be releasing their long-awaited Ben-Hur: 50th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition on Blu-ray and DVD this fall! The "limited and numbered" edition will be available in stores in time for the holiday shopping season - specific street date and SRP TBA. Included will be a reproduction of the personal diary that Charlton Heston kept during the production, complete with personal photos and his own sketches. There will also be a new HD documentary on Heston's experiences during the making of the film, entitled Charlton Heston & Ben-Hur: A Personal Journey, which includes home movie footage shot by his wife Lydia inside the Colosseum set. That's in addition to all of the previous DVD special features, which include audio commentary, Ben-Hur: The 1925 Silent Version, the 2005 Ben-Hur: The Epic That
Changed Cinema documentary, the 1994 Ben-Hur: The Making of an Epic documentary, the Ben-Hur: A Journey Through Pictures A/V presentation (featuring photos, storyboards, sketches, music and dialogue from the film), screen tests, vintage newsreels, highlights from the 1960 Academy Awards ceremony, trailers and more. You'll also get an exclusive book filled with production photos, production art and a reproduction of the original theatrical press book. The Blu-ray version will feature 2 BD-50s, while the DVD version will be a 5-disc set. And let me tell you, I've now had the chance to see before and after images of the new 6K HD restoration for Blu-ray, taken from the original 65mm camera elements, and the difference is stunning. Here's a look at the cover art for the package, and the open packaging for the DVD set...

.html With "Rise" pushed to August that means the DVD will probably hit at Christmas (might be the reason it was moved). If Fox is actually planning to tie in a new POTA blu-ray it could make for a very Heston Christmas.

That's great to hear. Thanks, Rory.
BEN-HUR is no Ten Commandments in my opinion but still great to see and have on bluray.

I did the Conquest box and the Return box for Sandy (as well as a Conquest card that is not shown). I have told Hunter that I will be giving him pictures of my custom POTA box work but have been busy. It is coming. As far as Sandy's figures are concerned the guy throws his heart in soul into the work and they look dead solid fabulous, especially cartoon Urko.

>>With Fox's announcement that "Apes" is moving to Aug. 5th, that
pretty much cuts the wait time in half. It's only a little over a month later
than the original June date. More interestingly, it puts it a little over a week
after the 10th anniversary of POTA2001. A new "Ape" decade has begun
(hopefully). Of course that means we'll be getting trailers, images, etc. a
lot sooner. We have to get our nails done, buy some nice clothes and get ready.
And it begs the biggest question of all: What if they move it to April 5?!

THREE covers?? They're taking the dick move that Dark Horse did back in
2001 and upping the ante with a third cover? Not cool.
I think I'll take the money I would have spent on Boom!, Blam! (which-
honestly- will probably never see the light of day), and RISE and put it towards
a PS3 so I can watch my POTA Blu-ray set. I have no interest in any of this new
stuff whatsoever.

More than likely it'd being done as a counter programming move against
"Cowboys and Aliens". There's going to be a lot of people in theaters that
weekend, and "Smurfs" would provide a family friendly alternative to "C&A".
Plus there is the stigma of big budget films opening in August, although in the
past few years releases such as Tropic Thunder and G.I. Joe have done quite
well. That being said, if it's a quality film there's a very good chance
it'll find an audience. I remember back in 1998 when the original "Blade" was
released after months of delays ended up grossing $70 million domestically after
everyone expected it to disappear after a few short weeks.
At one point August was a dumping ground, but then the studios- who created
said dumping ground- realized that there was an opportunity to give a film that
might otherwise disappear among a crowded schedule more room to flourish. Not
that I'm expecting "Rise" to be anything but a major disappointment
just like PotA 2001 was, but I do see where Fox is coming from as
far as the move is concerned.
BTW Jeff, I understand this: "It's the same time that Fox released
POTA2001, which did well at the box office (might have done better if it was
good)...", but not this: "...and if nothing else is a proven time of year when
people will go to an "Ape" movie". We've had February, May, May, June and
June, and then late July for the Burton travesty. I think the attendance had
more to do with Fox's marketing than the time of year.
Chris L.
>>Did the Smurfs blink? On the heels of "Rise of the Apes" moving to
Aug. 5th, the "Smurfs" movie has been pushed up a week to July 29. I guess
they'd rather open against "Cowboys and Aliens" than "Apes"? "Cowboys" is no
small potatoes either, starring Daniel "James Bond" Craig and Harrison Ford and
directed by Jon "Iron Man" Favreau. It's had good word of mouth. So maybe Sony
has heard some scuttlebutt? Could the "Ape-tar" legends be
true?<<<.html <.html

.htmlMaybe, but it's curious that "Smurfs" was moved a few days after "Apes" arrived in town. I'm just sayin'.
As for August being a "dumping ground" I've always thought it was suicide that studios fight it out in summer instead of releasing throughout the year (which they are kinda starting to do). If people want to see a movie they'll see it. The big movies are released to so many theaters now that going to another movie because you can't get in is a thing of the past.
As for the release of the "classic" Ape movies, that was 40 years ago. POTA2001's release was more in tune with people's habits now. It was released around the time "Rise" will be and people went.
