ALZ 112 stops working for Charles. So Will

what Caesar doses his troops with (the one that causes the human virus)?

So, Caesar has had the benefit of the original treatment his mum, Bright
Eyes, had---ie, one initial dose.He can,ultimately,speak, as a result.So, the
later release of the ALZ 112, which, from Charles' experience, seems to be fast
working, SHOULD mean our troop of revolutionaries are already on the cusp of
speech, because one exposure seems to be enough? John, Scrolls.

I think, on re-viewing, it's apparent that Caesar is on the cusp of speaking a couple of times earlier in the movie---when Will leaves after the first visit (ie, after Will threatens to take Caesar out of the sanctuary because he's injured) and also when he scrapes away his drawing of the window. It definitely sounds as though he's starting to speak. So, if the ALZ 113 is a DIFFERENT type of virus (and it worked really quickly on Koba), maybe we don't have enough info yet to predict exactly what effect it will have on the Apes in terms of speech.I've got to say that the scene where the Ape-house inmates at the zoo IMMEDIATELY, without question, join the revolution when the cages are smashed is possibly my favourite scene in the whole movie (closely followed by Rocket banging together the two police helmets in triumph nearer the end!).This film grows and grows with repeat viewing. Some might argue that Caesar isn't just Roddy,
it's also the makeup artists. Looking at side by side comparisons, it's still
Serkis' performance behind the CG. The director compares it to John Hurt playing
the Elephant Man under makeup. But I agree it's hard for people to make that
leap.

The Motion Picture Academy of America is very conservative, not as much as it used to be, but it still generally leans that way.
I just read a biography of Boris Karloff, one of the founders of the Screen Actors Guild, and he despised the Academy.

Yes, and Hurt was nominated for THE ELEPHANT MAN, but that was unique and he didn't stand much chance of winning. Since then I can't recall any nomination for an actor wearing heavy prosthetics.
I think the Academy will look at Caesar as more a SFX than an acting thing. Serkis was very good, but a lot of his final expressions came down to the work of the CGI artists, especially with the eyes, and I was looking at some of CONQUEST yesterday on HBO and those artists must have studied McDowall's expressions in the APES movies because there are several "Roddy looks" in the Caesar of RISE.
Remember on the bridge near the end of RISE where Franco yells out "Caesar!" and Caesar turns his head and looks at him? The expression on Ceasar's face and in his eyes was pure McDowall.

Agreed that the bleeding Lawgiver scene still isn't 100% correct, and it's
kind of funny that the scene on the Magnetic video release- a videotape
that's over 30 years old- sounds better that it does on the Blu-ray
version.
I've been aware of that sound splice between "...between evil and good" and
"The only good human...", but I always attributed that to the scene being edited
down during the original post-production process the same way the sauna scene,
the jail cell scene etc were edited. In other words, all the stuff you see in
the NATO preview. I'll have to dig out all my BENEATH releases and find out if
it goes all the way back to the original film.
Chris L.
>>In all my writing in the previous post you also asked about the
Lawgiver scene. That scene had audio delays and volume problems for years and
was finnaly fixed-sortof- about a couple of DVD and the Bluray version ago.
It still(It sounds like they went back to the Magnetic video audio tape and
enhanced it for todays sound) has the same mixing problems of volume and quality
of sound but its passable. The effects and or dialouge have abrupt editing and
bad fades like the Ursus speech. If you listen closely just before he says "The
Only good..." theirs a hard sound splice interjected at that point like a hard
erase was made and the tape head just hit the tape. I have a hard time
explaining this because I could sit for hours showing where all the problems are
with Beneath, some Conquest, alot of POTA68, but Escape and Battle are 99
percent right so Ill forget them now. <<<.html <.html

I recorded BENEATH yesterday afternoon while I was out and spot checked all
the problem scenes once I got in. Just like on the Blu-ray, all the problems I
had told Fox about had been corrected (most especially the scene with Brent
& Nova touching the ladder, in the tunnel etc) although I can't comment on
the sound balancing etc that you mentioned. The only thing I still notice
missing is a sound effect that I hear when I watch the Magnetic video version of
BENEATH. When Brent and Nova first enter the cave where they eventually see the
tunnel, there's a few bits of louder buzzing/humming (almost a flutter like
you'd hear with a mouth harp). I had wondered if that was the product of a
30+ year old VHS, but as far as my ears can tell it isn't. It's too clean a
sound to be magnetic tape degradation, plus if that were the case there'd be
other problems as well. I'll have to dig out all my old 4:30 Movie audio
recordings to see if it's there as well, but take a listen to your Drive In and
CBS premier broadcast recordings and let me know if you hear what I'm
describing.
Chris L.
>>I know ive been beating a dead Ape uh horse for so long but the

their own mastering(that was years ago, I dont think they do their own mastering

better)and are the correct ones in sound balance etc, etc. Just listen to the
sound differnces of Beneath from 1977-2008. Many different sources and quality
of work. Other than just sounding right, I compared them(back when we last
talked about this about a year and a half ago) to my Movie drive- in hard wired
sound recorded at a Go-Apes festival in 1974 and the CBS premieres in 73-74, the
sound balances are right and ofcourse no CD soundtrack audio is used as is in
the Blurays and DVDs of the last 10 -15 years and some broadcasts from Encore in
1992 and other broadcasts. The music sound is perfect on the isolated tracks
(Bluray)on the sequels. The sound effects are a mishmash of good and bad sound
leads from everywhere and the dialouge sound in general is correct. The problem
is the person who is doing the MIXING. The Apes are slowely getting better
soundwise so in about 5-10 years it should be perfect-lol. The Apes series
deserve (not just POTA68) a perfect restoration as the first A-movie sci-fi
series of the modern era and I feel that Fox will do it eventually if the Rise
trilogy go's on making the big bucks. <<<.html <.html

.htmlChris its nice to know that you know your apes like myself. The sound of the apes were always problematic. The Magnetic video stunk but were correct Mono mixes however bad the hum and distortion. The problems seem to happen when the Laserdiscs were announced and the worst multi generation, atleast 4 down from original were used and to make matters worse tried to be made into surround stereo. Chace surround, who everyone seemed to love, got bad elements and made them badder. POTA68 was distorted, Beneath had sound missing and in the wrong spots and low volume, Escape sounded like a blanket was thrown over the sound, and Conquest the last laser from CBS/FOX was distorted from the first crescendo to the end of the film. These are just sound problems, we all know the video.
After many complaints Fox sort of tried to fix things and weather anybody wants to belive it or not with a little exception, the Apes films are at their best-not THE best mind you that they should be- only since the Blurays, very bad, it took 35 years of video to get the films at a B- score in my opinion. To repeat myself the elements are their but stupidity and laziness are preventing full no nonsense restoration.
Play the Conquest theme from the bluray and bounce back and forth from the theme used on the film and the isolated score. They got it backwards. Techs have no idea what music is supposed to sound like. Beneath took the same time to get all the effects back in place and sound stems are still missing. It shows that the sound of the apes were multi tracked and could have been sensational but the cheaper route was taken. I have so many memmories going back to 1968 but seeing Conquest at the Embassy at 46th st.NYNY on opening day and seeing that big slightly curved screens colorfull bright picture and wonderfull dynamic sound was a memmory that gave awe to an impressionable 12/13 year old. Id like to see that again esp. Audio wise. Take care, John M.

I would have to say it's harder without the makeup. Actors often find their
character in the make or a prop or piece of wardrobe. Kim had to do
some
overdubs, and takes where she's just playing for the other actors to
work off
of. And she tied to do it without the makeup and it wasn't working for her.
She couldn't find the character. So even when she was done with the on
screen stuff, she'd ask they leave some of the makeup on for her.
Until
she was done for the day, even if it was just overdubbing dialog. She
said have the makeup on made a difference in the sound of her voice.

It may not beat POTA2K1 domestically.
It's still 25 million short. But it was 7 million
cheaper to make. Hopefully that will be taken
into account. And though it hasn't beaten the
all time domestic, at 158 vs 144, it did beat
the all time worldwide, 131 to 177. Well done!

Wolves". And it beat Tom Hanks' "Cast Away", the movie that got William
Broyles the gig creating POTA2001. "Rise" is now at $ 430 million
worldwide. $ 70 million to go to reach $ 500 mil, with China left to open. It
made $12 million this week. Will it do it?

Yes, I agree they seemed to crib Roddy. There's also a moment where Caesar realizes it's time to go in the group area and he has a bored, "OK. let's go" expression that reminded me of a Roddy moment. I'm sure people will be finding those kinds of things when they have the movie at home. Still more ammo that the director wants to connect it to the originals. A nomination for Serkis is a long shot but enough of a ruckus has been made and with "Rise" new on DVD around the time of the voting it's possible.
Yeah, it might not be until January that RISE comes to DVD/Blu-ray (Damn you all to hell, greedy Fox!). I'm sure you agree.... now. <.html <.html

I don't know, but I think most actors would prefer having little green dots pasted on their faces rather than heavy prosthetics and hours in a makeup chair.
They might used actors in masks for background apes at a far distance, but I think prosthetics and Fox APES movies are a thing of the past. I think one of the big things Fox learned from POTA2001 was that actors in ape makeup, no matter how good it is, is always something akin to Kabuki Theatre and can too easily slid into camp.

As someone who USED to work in professional film labs, and spent hours doing custom printing in darkrooms, I'm glad! Film is great, but it's costly and takes too much time. Digital isn't perfect -- not yet anyway -- but it's quick and unbelievably flexible. We wouldn't be getting the great film restorations on Blu-ray if it wasn't for digital technology.

It's getting better, but for any major production
you can't beat film & tape. Is digital easier?
In some ways. But it can also be a huge pain.
Any media has it's strengths and weaknesses.
But digital still has a way to go before it competes.
It wins like VHS wins over beta. It's cheaper.

It's faster. Photographers are always in a rush -- because it's a very competitive field and clients want everything NOW! -- digital imaging is instant.
Film (35mm and above) has better image quality, but it's just so 19th Century slow. Too bad, but that's the way it is.

They learned from Rise that they can tweak a performance.
Soon they'll be talking props. They won't even need the actor
after the data is entered in. Looks at those Vocaliod
performances.
They can do some things human singers can't. And if the singers
dies, or loses their voice...doesn't matter. The show must go
on!

Orangutans are far more genetically diverse than thought, a finding that could help their survival, say scientists delivering their full DNA analysis of the critically endangered ape.
The study, published January 27 in the science journal Nature, also reveals that the orangutan -- 'the man of the forest' -- has hardly evolved over the past 15 million years, in sharp contrast to Homo sapiens and his closest cousin, the chimpanzee. Once widely distributed across Southeast Asia, only two populations of the intelligent, tree dwelling ape remain in the wild in Borneo and Sumatra islands of Indonesia.
Haven't evolved in 15 million years?!!!
Sounds like an evolutionary dead end to me.

I KNEW that if I had said, "Oh January? Okay, well, in that case I'll talk bluray then. Happy Holidays everyone...bla bla bla..."
That Fox would then come out with their Bluray announcment.
Worked like a charm.

They're settled in their ways, happy not to move on and in an evolutionary rut.In film and television it's called 'Star Trek Syndrome'. John, Scrolls.

.htmlI agree. The promotional, or lack of, material wasnt very attractive and in fact the raised fist I thought was for lack of a better word innapropriate. With all the odds against this film its amazing that its the film it is. Like the saying goes if its not on the paper it wont be on the screen. Its a true miracle and im very proud. Being old school I would of liked good promo material, perhaps the sequels. Most of the personell at Fox wasnt even born when posters and lobby cards ruled the roost.
The story in a way did not lend itself to much grandiosity in photos or posters but a logical sequel probably will. Rise seems more like Escape when it comes to promotional ideas, even with the action its more a love story with some action than the reverse. Take care, John M.

That's why they have the video plug in the camera now
instead of waiting for the dailies. They wouldn't let us
use it in school. Said it slows production down, what with
actors wanting to see their performance. Probably a good idea.

Asyou might know the rating system in America did not start, I think, until November 68 so films were either Yes/No for a certain age group. Watching POTA in 68 and seeing people appluading was a wonderfull memory. Take care, John M.

.html I'd be interested to know if folk here are buying the Star Wars blu ray set.A few years ago, this would have been an automatic for me but, this time, I really can't be bothered. And I loved Star Wars---the original novelisation was my reading book in primary school and I was an ealy member of the fan club (anyone else remember 'Bantha Tracks'?).But the Star Wars prequels have steadily strangled my love of Star Wars and, having seen so many 'Making Of's, I struggle to suspend disbelief when I've been so indoctrinated in how the special effects were done.Star Wars is pretty much dead to me now.And yet, Burton's Apes never, ever damaged my Apes fanaticism.Maybe Apes is my first, true love, whilst Star Wars was a bit of a fling. That works, because then Star Trek would be my mother-in-law.John, Scrolls. <.html

.htmlI agree with your point. Apes to me have to hit hard when the going is good in my view because it doesnt have the fanatical fanbase as other franchises, and thats what makes the Apes better in my view.
I think they just want to have a great idea on what the sequel will be about and have a general outline. Though in my view they started this after the opening weekend. Fox is always skittish with Apes but they must move fast and hard and not be afraid to go "R" rated territory if they must. Make the story Darker this time and give the people something different but the same if you catch my drift. After all it is going to be about War and the effects of science and thats never pretty. Just thowing it out their, John M.

It took them 10 years to do POTA2001 "right".
False analogy, Krueger! POTA2001 was the result of nearly a decade of development hell, where the studio hadn't a clue what it was doing and everyone they brought in hadn't a clue either. Proof of what I'm saying? POTA2001. Come on, get real. They out Jimmied their own Franciscus!
The people behind RISE have a clue, so let's not be a bunch of impatient juvenile monkeys and leave them to do their jobs and hope they make another good movie.
You get a hold of that and hang on to it, Krueger, or you might as well be a TRANSFORMERS fan.

Hi, Andy.
Back then in 1968, there were three ratings: U, A and X. X would have been the only restrictive rating (16 and over), while A would refer to the film being adult in nature, it still allowed for children to watch the film, with some local councils enforcing that children should be accompanied by an adult. U was universal. I believe that PotA was rated A back then, judging from this page on the BBFC's website: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/0/70aaf39c6f81e04780256dad001b5bec?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=4
Below is the ratings system in place in the UK during 1968.

I'm also in the UK (Sussex), and also the first ever Apes film I went to see in the cinema was Escape, too, which was reshown sometime in the mid-seventies (Escape is my second favourite of the series after the original... naturally). Ah, the memories...

.htmlWell, I should say one of those movies I have never seen from beginning to end. I've seen snippets and I could name the main characters but that's about it. Spoiler alert!!!
I do know that Luke is Leia's sister and Darth Vader is Luke's daddy...and Yoda sounds like Farley...other than that....I don't know much about the movie. :)
