.htmlYes!!!! Now we don't have to risk tearing apart our fragile originals most of which are in frames.
This is old news but there is a new POTA comic called: Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes. The artwork is way better than the original series by BOOM.
I'm not sure if the artist from the first BOOM series actually saw a John Chambers ape or just the TIm Burton remake. In any event, all has been made right. I also buy both comics.
Issue 2 is now out. --- On Fri, 12/9/11, dave <smugster2000@...> wrote:

I agree! I read the first issue of Betrayal and really
enjoyed it, both the story and the art. I can't say that for the
other BOOM! title.

Good point Chris. Remember when Nova is killed he says "I should let them all die". So Taylor was definitively motivated to push the button.

It's in line with his character, as well as the ultimate (and final)
extension of his misanthropy. Mankind had fallen, the Ape rose and had
become just as bad, and humanity (albeit mutated) hadn't changed. In
fact, they had gotten worse. The world was a bastardized, nightmarish
version of what it had been. Nova was dead, Brent was dead- there was
only one way to permanently end the cycle. Heston had his own reasons of
course, but it worked exceptionally well as far as the story goes.
Chris L.
When the director of the movie would disagree with this, then that's all I need to know our shared opinion is probably the wiser.

I recently watched the opening of the Ralph Bakshi Lord Of The Rings animated movie, and couldn't help but notice that several motifs from the Beneath and Battle soundtracks appeared in the music. Not surprising since Leonard Rosenman was the composer for all three films. However the most striking link to POTA takes place during the confrontation between Gandalf and Saruman. If you watch it, you'll see that the background plate representing their supernatural powers is very, very familiar to anyone who's watched the pre-title sequence of the first Apes movie. <.html <.html

Last night I went to Jeff Goldsmith's screening of
"Rise" followed by an Q & A with the writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
Jeff does these screenings often and then podcasts the Q & As. So you'll be
able to hear and this one was a doozy. Goldsmith does marathon Q & As. But I
did ask about "Rise 2" coming out in 2013 and mentioned it's the 50th
anniversary of Boulle's book. Rick joked "Please don't tell the studio" and then
admitted it would be "take a lot of work" but would be cool if it could be
released that year. Of course there are a lot of variables whether it will or
not and they are currently just trying to get the script done. Which can be a
mountain in itself as the evening detailed their 5 year odyssey of writing
"Rise" (they were fired 3 times). Also, during a question about the oddity
of "Rise" being a POTA movie where the apes don't talk, Amanda said one of the
big questions for the sequel was whether they will talk (she wouldn't tell
us).
The evening was totally supported by Fox which
provided the blu-ray that was shown on a big movie screen (looked great) and
Jeff was able to watch the extras to provide more questions (besides being a big
Apes fan himself). Fox also provided us with blu-ray posters, which Rick and
Amanda patiently signed. I was also able to grab the 12/8/11 Daily Variety with
the hologram Andy Serkis on the cover from a local newsstand.
About half the audience hadn't seen "Rise" either
so that was fun. The lady next to me kept reacting vocally to the movie and
admitted later she almost had to leave the theater when Caesar was busted and
sent to the ape place, she was so wound up emotionally. Other than that I'll let
the podcast speak for itself when it hits. <.html <.html

Happy with Rise but in this instance a sequel will have to be just as well received. Writing will be paramount since the sfx is well exploided in Rise and bordem sets in fast with audiences today. I still believe in making an R rated film. Temple of Doom created all this PG-13 furor and their was plenty of blood and small time gore in that. If a drop of blood is shown it becomes an R film today, childish. Whats the purpose of PG-13 as opposed to PG alone, what, one "F" word-so silly. John M.

See, Jeffery, I told you.... more likely 2014 before we see a sequel. (And I'll bet the apes won't talk that much.)
I'm also not surprised there were so many that hadn't seen the movie yet. The DVD, Blu-ray, and cable and satellite showings will really bring it to the masses (and their asses).
And, who's Jeff Goldsmith? I doubt he's related to Jerry Goldsmith, though who knows?

.html.html While it is true that shrinking the magazine sized originals does take away some of the detail, it will still be enjoyable for those that have not had a chance to read them. As for the colour, the German magazine reprints did an amazing job coloring the POTA (movie) story. Done right, it is OK. If anyone really wanted B/W, then can still find the old magazines easily on ebay. But we've never had Terror in colour, so I think I'd like to see that.

My reservation about TERROR reprints is that the normal comic page is too small for pages that were originally produced for magazine size pages.Ploog and Sutton did some astonishingly intricate and detailed art for the series and I feel it will be very cramped in comic size. The Malibu repros bear that out.As for colour---I'm not really enthusiastic--Marvel's Adventures colur series butchered the b+w art lines.John, Scrolls.

What about the opinion of the person who wrote the story? He was involved
long before the director (who I hold in very high regard BTW) was.

He was, although I think it was the combination of Nova's death, Zaius'
reaction to his plea for help, and then Brent's death that finally made him do
it.
I maintain that there's a lot of subtextual material in the film
that isn't spelled out for the viewer, but becomes apparent upon repeated
viewings. Dehn had certain theme that he worked into all his stories.
Chris L.
>>Good point Chris. Remember when Nova is killed he says "I should
let them all die". So Taylor was definitively motivated to push the button.

I agree with you that up until the last few seconds- even knowing that
he was mortally wounded- he was willing to try and dismantle the bomb, although
"Help me!" could be interpreted as asking for help because he'd been
shot. Granted though in the original screenplay it's "Help me dismantle the
bomb" (or something like that). Once Zaius reacted the way he did and then
seeing Brent killed, Taylor's reaction- as you pointed out- was "Fvck it!".
In extreme situations like that, it's a fairly common human reaction
actually. In Taylor's case though, it was (and you'll forgive me for repeating
myself) the ultimate extension of his misanthropy. If Brent has detonated the
bomb, it wouldn't have felt in line with that particular character.
Chris L.
>>Yes, but I also think that just prior to deliberately detonating
the bomb, he seemed willing to dismantle it (Brent seemed to convince him of the
need to, despite his mourning the loss of Nova). He called to Zaius to help him,
which Zaius refuses, sermonising about the troubles of humanity, so he basically
goes "F*** it!" and falls on the button. I think Taylor hadn't totally decided
what to do until Zaius's final words damning him and mankind, leading to his
final petulant act. Who knows what would have happened if Zaius had of helped
him (although whether he was an expert in bomb disposal, particularly that one,
is another issue). Then again, the ending wouldn't have been as powerful and
allegoric, and there wouldn't be the different circular or not timeline
arguments that entertain some. ;) <<

.htmlThe Houston film critics gave Andy Serkis a best supporting actor nomination, the only "Rise" mention in a big day of awarding. That makes 2; if he gets 4 more you won't be able to count the number of nominations he got on one hand.
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/in-contention/posts/the-descendants-leads-with-5-houston-film-critics-nods
The Los Angeles film critics, Boston film critics, New York online critics and San Francisco film critics all announced today. Looks like Christopher Plumber ("Beginners") and especially Albert Brooks ("Drive") are the frontrunners for "that" category.
Also the AFI did their Top Ten of the Year, with some surprising choices ("Bridesmaids"?) but nothing for "Rise". That's OK. I did my research and found they didn't pick "District 9", the "Rise" awards role model, either but it still got a Best Picture nom.

Meanwhile, the apetastic doc "Project Nim" is turning into a player. "Rise" and "Nim" would make a nice duo come Oscar time. <.html

Rick joked "Please don't tell the studio" and then admitted it would be "take a lot of work" but would be cool if it could be released that year. Of course there are a lot of variables whether it will or not and they are currently just trying to get the script done. Which can be a mountain in itself as the evening detailed their 5 year odyssey of writing "Rise" (they were fired 3 times). Also, during a question about the oddity of "Rise" being a POTA movie where the apes don't talk, Amanda said one of the big questions for
the sequel was whether they will talk (she wouldn't tell us).

Fox also provided us with blu-ray posters, which Rick and Amanda patiently signed. I was also able to grab the 12/8/11 Daily Variety with the hologram Andy Serkis on the cover from a local newsstand.

I was going to suggest Dolphins, Horses or Cats but of course they already are hyper-intelligent.
For instance, it takes a dolphin less than ten minutes to train a human to throw fish at it, and, while thousands of humans may turn up to watch a horse race, you rarely see even a single horse bothering to watch the olympics!
My cat has worked out that pulling on a piece of string wins him a treat - whereas most humans I've met don't understand String Theory.
BTW, my Mother in Law's budgie speaks better English than she does!

I don't think poor, old Mother Earth could stand another so-called hyper-intelligent animal. The current one is doing a pretty good job of messing it up.

I went to my local Walmart to get the Blu-ray of RISE at 11 AM -- and they hadn't even gotten them out on display yet. Had to wait for them to find the shipping box they were in, me and a lady wanting the DVD for her husband in the military someplace. Meanwhile, noticed that Walmart sells the Blu-ray of PLANET together with the Blu-ray of the Burton turd for only $20. Not a bad price for PLANET on Blu-ray, but you have to buy a turd with it!
Anyway, I haven't had much time to look at it before I go to work, but many of the deleted scenes, which I haven't watched all of, are not finished, CGI wise, and "The Mythology of the Apes" featurette features clips from PLANET that have to be of the latest restoration because I swear they look better than the Blu-ray. Damn, I hope Fox gets out a remastered Blu-ray of PLANET sooner rather than later.

.html The deleted scenes on the blu-ray are a mixed bag. There's still no sign of stuff that was glimpsed in the trailers, like the Cornelia stuff, or Caesar blowing up the lab, or the little girl waving. Or the original finale of Franco getting killed. If Franco decides not to come back they could probably use that to open the sequel. But it doesn't seem they put all the deleted scenes on here.
Obviously they only had time and money to complete the stuff they needed to finish the movie. So the deleted scenes are mostly the ape actors sans CG. No prob. Mostly the scenes aren't needed. Some of them are Caesar as a child and as far as I'm concerned, the less with Caesar as a child the better. Also a scene with the Rodney character. Rodney works best in small doses too. Though it's kind of cool that Caesar is strapped down in that scene. Reminds me of Caesar on the shock table in "Conquest". Would've liked to have seen the final CG on that. But not necessary. A little too much cookie.
The two scenes I dig involve Koba. In one he gives Jacobs a taste of his own medicine (literally). But I think it would've been a little too similar to Koba pushing the helicopter over. But it's too bad they didn't include the scene where Koba examines a gun. Put it at the end after all the credits. Would've rocked.
I have a feeling they're holding stuff back, maybe for a "director's cut" or new blu-ray when the sequel comes out. Maybe they can finish these deleted scenes for that. <.html

Well by now I'm sure all of you have bought your Rise of the Planet of the Apes Blu-Rays/DVDs and have watched not only the movie but the deleted scenes. Did everyone spot yet another POTA hommage in the deleted scenes? A nice one I thought.
Unfortunately the deleted scenes did not really add to any significant changes to the movie as I had hoped. I hoped that there would be more to the Cornelia relationship. As far as I can tell, most of the deleted scenes were indeed just clutter and deservedly cut.
I was hoping that there was a more sanguine 'Director's cut' in the future. oh well.

The "Rise of the POTA" blu-ray hit and whatever
went on with Caesar's love interest Cornelia didn't make an ape-pearance in the
deleted scenes. Director Rupert Wyatt explains to Ape Central about Cornelia and
that the subplot was taken out of the film because they were afraid it would be
too campy. He also says it's his preferred version of the film so don't expect a
director's cut.

Rick Jaffa said at the q & a that the original ending was Franco accidentally getting killed by Brian Cox, who is then killed by the apes. They filmed the deleted scene of Koba finding Cox's gun as a lark. But obviously they wanted to use it because they did the CG, including CGing a plane into the shot (obviously the neighbor spreading the virus). But I guess without all that there's no reason for there to be a gun there.
But where's the Franco's death deleted scene?!
Dammit it all to hell -- they should have kept that ending!
I can't say I'm really all that crazy about Rupert's final edit of RISE. It's the reason I was a little disappointed with the movie when I first saw it. They cut it too much.
