Sci Fi Now mag this month has several pages on Apes, including an article by Ed Gross looking at Conquest with an eye to RISE.RISE is described in another feature in this issue as 'the best thing to come out of Hollywood this year'.No arguments here! John, Scrolls.
Can you remind me -- is Sci-Fi Now published in the UK? I forget. I think I have a hard time finding it.

I probably agree with you there. The Lisa 'No' does have its own special power, however--amidst all of the violence, it's an 'unevolved' Ape who shows humanity, shaming the human-like Caesar into mercy.Apes has so many strands and layers.John, Scrolls.
Unevolved? I thought we all agreed that there had to have been some genetic re-engineering that happened "unseen" in the original series, or is that why you put it in quotes? <.html

.htmlIt's a UK Mag.Actually, there are really only two regular sci fi mags out there now, as far as I know--ScFiNow and SFX, both being UK.The demise of Starlog, Starburst, DeathRay etc has left a real hole in my monthly read.I think SciFiNow does get distributed in the US--I don't have a scanner, unfortunately.John, Scrolls.

Yes, it's a UK magazine. If memory serves it has been available from some stores in the US.

.htmlEd Gross recently talked sequel to "Rise of the POTA" director Rupert Wyatt, who mentioned how excited he was that Jackie Earle (Kraik) Hailey is returning to the POTA. OK, he didn't say that but it's probably what he's thinking.
In any case, he says the sequel will probably focus on the strengths that "Rise" had: "I would say that we will look to hold onto the realism and the way we will do that is the film will still be set in a world that is very understandable and appreciable to a modern, contemporary audience. I don't think any of us want to be setting the sequel in any dystopian, post-apocalyptic world. We have to play to the mythology of POTA, which is Mankind brought about his own downfall. And I would say the next film will actually focus closer to that than this last film did. As in, we are the orchestrators of our own demise. And we are the architects in many ways.
"I don't think we're necessarily going to tell a story that's saying humanity actually got it's act together and sorted themselves out because obviously we're playing into a mythology that's already preordained. But that said, I don't think we want to be setting a tone that is in any way dystopian or bleak in it's aspects because I think one of the things of ("Rise") that was so appealing to so many people was that it was a world that felt so contemporary and therefore let people in. It wasn't clean, straight sci-fi. It was actually a human drama that had science-fiction aspects, and those were to do with the apes. So we'll probably repeat that in many ways. We'll look to kind of work off of that and build from it. And we will be obviously in the future but the conflict between humans and apes will be played out in quite a plausible, logical world".

.html'Tis the season for year - end "Best" lists and Sasha Stone of Awards Daily chose "Rise of the POTA" as her # 3 movie of the year (along with it's soul brother "Project Nim"). She says: "Watching (the apes) in their cages finding the spirit to break out of their prison and find freedom was one of the most rapturous cinematic moments of the year". She also placed "Rise" in some of her other lists.
http://www.awardsdaily.com/2011/12/adtopten
But she can't say the same for it's Oscar chances (nomination ballots are being mailed today so the next few weeks are put up or shut up for nominations).
http://www.awardsdaily.com/2011/12/oscar-ballots-mailed-to-voters-today-as-war-horse-reclaims-the-lead-in-the-best-picture-race/
"Rise" is the front runner to win for Best FX but probably any other nomination at this point will be a miracle. It'll have to pull off a "District 9". But good luck to Andy Serkis and all the rest. <.html

Well, I can't believe there's actually someone on the planet that can write this many words on something that's about as likely to happen.... as apes taking over the planet, but you might enjoy reading it.

.htmlJames Franco reportedly spoke up about Andy "Caesar" Serkis and the Oscar controversy, saying Serkis should be recognized because "this is the moment when he's really broken through (with motion capture)...What he does is real acting".
http://www.contactmusic.com/news/franco-oscars-should-recognise-serkis_1280186
Meanwhile, Franco's movie "Sal" premiered at a couple of film festivals in the last few months. Franco directed this movie about our own Sal "Milo" Mineo but it turns out it's a mini-budget/shot in 8 days affair. It's basically a showcase for the actor who plays Mineo, Val Lauren. It's set during the tragic last day of Sal's life and reportedly is done mostly in close-up. The comments I've seen suggest it's a slow paced art film (perhaps reminiscent of Gus Van Sant's work, who Franco admires) but Val Lauren does a good job as Sal. So Sal fans might want to look for it (but it doesn't sound like the kind of film that will get shown much).
Here's the "Hollywood Reporter" review:

Looking back, I think the most important thing the Burton debacle showed was the limitations of prosthetic makeup on human actors playing apes. Although there were some major makeup design mistakes, -- mostly the fault of Burton, not Baker --, there were also very good simian makeups, BUT it was always apparent that it's a human dressed as an ape. This illusion may have worked back in the sixties and seventies, because there was no better way to do it outside of an animated movie, but today, it just doesn't work. If RISE had used actors in ape suits, it wouldn't have fooled anybody. I just recently showed the Blu-ray of RISE to my 73-year-old father, who knew nothing of how the SFX in RISE were created. At the end of the movie, when all the apes "rise" as Caesar walks among them, my father said to me, "Are you sure none of those apes are real?" He was surprised when I told that although they were all CGI, there was an
actor behind all those apes. Then I showed him one of the featurettes on how it was done.
One thing that does strike me when I look at RISE is wondering how long it will be before its SFX look dated? I don't think it'll be very long.

Oh, I agree. If you watch any episode of "Escape To Chimp Eden" and then watch RISE, you'll plainly see the filmmakers didn't depict the apes (i.e. chimps) entirely "real." But if they had -- meaning showing their genitalia and ugly hind quarters -- it just would have been too distracting (to say the least). However, actors in costumes and makeup would have made RISE more campy than anything in BATTLE or Burton's debacle.

It is interesting to see the Evolution of Ape Makeup.
From the Eddie G. screentest, to the features, to the
early tests with Winston's take on POTA2K1, and
Bakers early Bo Derek stuff. I do think that they
will improve the CG stuff. But there's no going
back now, unless Fox allows some low budget
indie stuff, or it gets spun in a new direction
ala 2001 or something using talking apes.

makeup bitching about how humiliated he was.

How about this...
CG Apes in the style of Classic POTA?
But totally photo-realistic! I for one would love
to see that. Computer Generated Evolved Apes!
Who wouldn't love that? You can use makeup for
the long shots and just use the computer stuff for
close-ups and articulation. Can't go wrong there.

had too many mistakes for me to take them as real. Sure, the artists did
their research, but not enough. And on BluRay it becomes even more apparent.
Just my personal

.htmlWe all know that Jackie Earle "Kraik" Haley should be in "Rise 2". Does anyone object? I didn't think so.
The question is, who should he play? I was thinking one of the human survivors but, wait a minute, hold the phone... what about that ship full of astronauts? What was it, the Icarus? We all know damn well that Taylor didn't go to friggin' Mars so that's out. The only way to do this is those astronauts return and find humanity devastated by the virus. They're like, "What the?". And Kraik, I mean Mr. Haley, is one of the astronauts and he comes upon one of the human survivors, a cameo by Ron Harper. And he's like, "I need a pouch to carry my things in, my half eaten chocolate chip cookie and so forth". But Ron can't help him because he's barely surviving. So Haley fights the apes when he's not making wild, passionate love to Freida Pinto.
There's your sequel right there. Write your congressman. Tell Newt Gingrich you'll vote for him if he makes this happen. It's a Kraik world and POTA's just living in it.

Studios want these sequels out quick to capitalize on the heat. Two years is the new three years. Plus 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the book, a nice tie-in. If the script comes together quickly it will be 2013. If not, 2014. Or maybe never.

.html.html Interesting to learn from Rory that the type of near-light effect seen outside Taylor's ship also turns up in Valley Of The Dolls. I've never seen that movie, but I can imagine that, in Dolls' case, the light show represents a trip of a less interstellar nature. I'd always assumed that the effects footage at the beginning of POTA was filmed especially for Apes, and yet I don't recall any of the behind the scenes accounts I've read making any mention of it, and Valley Of The Dolls was released before POTA in 1967. It could have been the case that new FX was shot for POTA using the same technique, but I wonder if what appears through the windows of Heston's ship might have been
pre-existing psychedelia filmed for another
production. Does anyone have a definitive answer? <.html <.html
