It's done better than a lot of big titles that have been out longer, like "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" and "Super 8". It looks like it's selling well, especially since it didn't have the full holiday season.

Rise's DVD sales in the US amount to $30+ million now:
http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/weekly/thisweek.php
Sales appear to be leveling off during the post-Holiday period. If all the sales had happened in 2011, Rise would appear to have made the Top 20 list:
http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/annual/2011.php
How is it that fewer than 2 million have purchased the Rise DVD when it was advertised on t.v. so much, AND was such a good movie?
Might Blu-Ray sales have comprised the bulk of sales?
Hopefully Fox made its t.v. advertising money back... <.html

1.5 million units at $33 million.
Overall total: 3.1 million units
1.6 million DVD units at $30 million.
1.5 million Blurays units at $33 million.
Here's the Bluray chart:
Rise of the Planet of the Apes goes TRIPLE PLATINUM!
And that's just in the U.S. ;o)

"We're in very early discussions about, not about the making of it because it will be made, but just about what exactly it will be. Where we choose to drop into the ascendancy of the apes after the end of the last movie. Drafts of it are being written as we speak and I think it's fairly imminent as to when it's going to be shot".

.htmlI hope you're right, but is it possible that those two #'s are basically reflecting >COMBINED< DVD / Blu-Ray sales, compiled just a few days apart (to explain the minor discrepancy)? I would think you're right, though, because otherwise: Why would they maintain separate lists? In which case, nice find! :-) They way they have the Blu-Ray link organized, it's a bit easy to overlook.

No, the charts say weekly. So they're separate
charts for DVD and blu-ray. $63 million combined in 3 weeks just in the
U.S.

(to explain the minor discrepancy)? I would think you're right, though, because
otherwise: Why would they maintain separate lists? In which case, nice find! :-)
They way they have the Blu-Ray link organized, it's a bit easy to overlook.

I think Tarantino would like to get a job with any major studio these days. He's talked about wanting to do a Bond film, but the producers aren't interested. I doubt Fox would hand him an APES project. <.html

This video has been making the internet rounds.
Andy Serkis playing Caesar getting left behind without CG. The Oscar nomination
ballots are in so whatever will be, will be. Rupert Wyatt said somewhere,
maybe on the blu-ray commentary, they were going to put the full movie on the
blu-ray without CG so one could watch the whole movie this way. That would've
been interesting but they didn't do it. Maybe on the next blu-ray.
I also heard this was a tough scene to CG because
Andy couldn't have the face camera (pressing up against the glass). I guess that
just underlines how much they relied on his performance.

.htmlFilm is collaborative but awards are about acknowledging individuals. A "real" actor's performance is contributed to by the director, the editors, the composer, hairstylist, makeup artists, etc. An actor does their job and leaves it in the hands of others. Andy is saying he did the same job as any actor would in creating and performing the character. If a composer gets a Best Score Oscar, do they share it with their singers or musicians? Certainly a director doesn't create a film alone. But there's still a Best Director Oscar.
Even Visual FX. If "Rise" wins, the Oscar will go to the supervisors, probably Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon. Not everybody who contributed gets one. Others contributed to what Caesar is but Andy was the main individual who created him. Due to the nature of the role, you don't see Andy on screen. But Andy was the glue that made the character what it was. It's a tough call but acting awards are silly anyway. How can you take 5 different performances by 5 actors and say which one is the "best"? It's not like seeing who can throw a javelin the farthest. Caesar obviously left an impression with people and if Andy gets a nomination because of it that's groovy.

I think this is a fallacious argument. True the computer people
may have a bit more input into how a character comes across
than other crew, but they aren't working in a vacuum. It can
be said that everyone has a hand in the performance from
Lighting and Cinematography to Editing. Everyone and every
thing on that shoot are trying to make them look good, right
down to what film stock is chosen long before a single frame
gets digitized. Vivian Leigh could drop a tear on cue every
take. So if a CG guy takes a real Andy Serkis tear and
moves it a frame or two for dramatic purposes, Andy's
performance is less Oscar worthy? I don't think so.
Plenty of actors were given drops for crying scenes
long before computers. Should they give back any
Oscars they may have won? Is a computer like
steroids? Are they performance enhancing?
Is it like Auto-Tune? Can they make a bad
actor into, maybe not a good actor, but a
better actor? I'd need evidence of that.

Exactly! That's why the acceptance speeches are so long.
There's a lot of people to thank. Certainly Andy Serkis can
thank WETA in his. Chances are though WETA will get his
Oscar, just like John Chambers got Kim Hunter's. Not that
his was undeserved. It was! But without the actor it's just
foam.

If you read the description under the video, you'll find a link to a
"making of" video that shows that a real orangutan was used.

However, there's another version of the commercial that uses a CGI
orangutan, at least for some shots. And it is a re-do of the
original commercial, which featured a chimp. This appears to be a
mix of a real chimp (some of the shots of it in bed) and CGI (in the

It's sometimes intriguing thinking of how parts could have been cast differently. Total Recall's Quaid character was potentially headed for Patrick Swayze and even Richard Dreyfuss before folks ultimately selected Arnold...who had been rumored to be poised to appear in a POTA revisitation. Perhaps Rise 2 might be Arnold's 2nd movie? Should it be?

Planet Of The Apes Marathon
PLANET OF THE APES, 1968,
20th Century Fox, 119 min. Dir. Franklin
Schaffner. One of the greatest modern sci-fi
films, a combination of apocalyptic action
and evolutionary parable. Astronaut Charlton
Heston finds himself stranded on a strangely
familiar world dominated by a race of highly
intelligent gorillas, chimpanzees and
orangutans. Trailer
BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1970, 20th Century Fox, 94 min. Three years
before he directed the most somber of the
DIRTY HARRY sequels, MAGNUM FORCE, reliable
craftsman Ted Post took a similar approach
to the second - and scariest - entry in the
PLANET OF THE APES franchise. Astronaut
Brent (James Franciscus), on a rescue
mission looking for Taylor (Charlton
Heston), finds himself caught between apes
determined to wipe out humanity and a
subterranean cult of H-bomb-worshipping
mutants. It's a premise that leaves little
room for hope, but Post energizes the
material with riveting action sequences. The
result is an underrated combination of
stylish adventure and bleak philosophy that
seems timelier than ever in its examination
of man's terrifying potential for
self-annihilation. Co-starring Kim Hunter,
Linda Harrison, Maurice Evans. Trailer
ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1971, 20th Century Fox, 98 min. Dir. Don
Taylor. When chimpanzees Cornelius and Zira
(Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter) mysteriously
arrive on Earth in a spaceship, they are
greeted with wonder and quickly become a
media sensation. But this initial excitement
turns to suspicion, and the chimp couple
find themselves victims of a high-level
conspiracy. Trailer
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1972, 20th Century Fox, 88 min. Dir. J. Lee
Thompson. Roddy McDowall and Don Murray star
in the fourth PLANET OF THE APES film, which
takes place in the then-future 1990s! In a
political allegory timed to coincide with
the black power movement of the early 1970s,
the enslaved apes plot to overthrow the
human race that has oppressed them; this
ambitious and entertaining sci-fi classic
served as a template for last year's RISE OF
THE PLANET OF THE APES. Trailer
BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES,
1973, 20th Century Fox, 93 min. Dir. J. Lee
Thompson. The fifth and final film in the

battling mutant humans. Roddy McDowall
returns as Caesar, and Claude Akins and John
Huston provide support to help bring the
series full circle. Trailer

I wish they'd show the "Beneath" print they showed at the Aero in 2007, but I doubt they have a print for the other sequels that can compete with blu-ray. I've seen "Escape" and "Rise" on blu-ray in theaters and they look great. Except blu-ray can't compete with film for depth of field. But at 2 AM I'd be blurry-eyed anyway.

My usual rant is that its all their even the prolouge to Conquest but lazziness is much more fun. FOX should, from a business standpoint, find the 35mm elements of the sequels(found POTA68)with the afore mentioned audio so they can furthur milk the teet since Rise OTPOTA and its prodigny will be around a while so Make the Money While You Can FOX. If you build it, we will come.......John M.

Yes, it says only POTA will be a film print.
And unfortunately that could mean PLANET will look the worst, but I'd be there anyway -- if it wasn't two thousand miles into the future -- I mean, away. <.html

So as we head to the Oscar nominations next Tuesday, a Visual FX nomination seems to be a lock, a Sound editing nom looks a possibility. Andy Serkis, not likely but with all the publicity...perchance. Best Picture? Not in a million years, but WETA movies have done well with Best Picture noms in the past. Anyone here think DISTRICT 9 deserved a Best Picture nomination? I've already forgotten most of that movie.
What I think is that the standards of what makes for an exceptional movie have been so lowered over the past forty years, that it's all but a joke now. RISE was good, but if it were released in 1971 instead of 2011, do you think it would have even been mentioned in the same breath as the films that got Best Picture noms back then?

I wonder if Kim Hunter's Zira would have attracted an Oscar nomination today?
Well, back in the day, Hunter was nominated by the New York Film Critics for their award, but today I believe very much that she would be in the serious running for an Academy nomination, and not only that, but PLANET would be a serious contender.
Again, standards have been so lowered now -- because the movies generally are so much more mediocre today, and that's because studio interference is so bad. Just look at how so many of the decisions about what RISE would be were done not by the director and writers, but by the "suits" at Fox. This isn't the same Hollywood of forty years ago.

the Oscar lists and see how science fiction has been treated over the years.
Maybe I'll do that before Nomination Time.
Meanwhile, this is a good rundown of the
highlights. No sci-fi movie has won Best Picture (some might be tempted to count
"Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" but that's fantasy). The complete list
of sci-fi movies nominated for Best Picture are: "Clockwork Orange", "Star
Wars", "E.T.", "Avatar", "District 9" and last year's "Inception" (so sci-fi has
been gaining traction lately).
It looks like the only major Oscar win for sci-fi
is Don Ameche, Best Supporting Actor for "Cocoon" in 1985.

Well, I'd go with Conquest, mostly because it had more meat on it than Rise. Conquest has its limitations, for sure, but its atmosphere is darker than Rise, as well as being a weightier film. Still, I do think it's hard to compare them, and Rise has its own advantages over Conquest, but overall I'd go for Conquest on this call.

That trio basically gave Fox their "Apes" franchise back. Now the director is in demand and if Fox wants them to play ball beyond this first sequel they can't walk all over them. And obviously Andy Serkis has some clout now with Fox.
Fox can be pretty stubborn. They aren't Warner Bros. which basically lets Christopher Nolan do what he wants with "Batman". "Rise" had it's problems but was pretty solid. I think we can expect the sequel to be along the lines of what "Rise" was in terms of quality.

Watching on that huge screen with a very good sound system with the great cinematography of Bruce Surtees and the great opening them of Tom Scott just hit a chord that will forever make it my favorite sequel. Even then I had an eye of seeing that certain elements were missing or changed and that just added to the mystery that is Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Even with its monochromatic color scheme it still is the most colorfull of all the Apes films. Take care, John M.
