That's really hard to say. They are both very different movies, so it is an apples and oranges comparison. But if you put a gun to my head; I would say Conquest.
It is apples and oranges. It's dumb really to make a competion between them. They are two very different movies made in different eras for different audiences.
CONQUEST was made for the fans of the APES movies that came before it. RISE was made for the modern, world-wide movie audience. They have the same DNA, but they're cousins, not brothers. <.html <.html

It will always be Conquest. I was at the Embassy 46th st, NYNY when it premered and at 12 years old any event becomes part of your DNA and it cant be helped. Watching on that huge screen with a very good sound system with the great cinematography of Bruce Surtees and the great opening them of Tom Scott just hit a chord that will forever make it my favorite sequel. Even then I had an eye of seeing that certain elements were missing or changed and that just added to the mystery that is Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Even with its monochromatic color scheme it still is the most colorfull of all the Apes films. Take care, John M.
I first saw CONQUEST at a drive-in -- unfortunately. A year and a half later I finally saw it in a theatre and it was like seeing the movie for the first time.
Though I now view CONQUEST as a very compromised movie, not just for its "official" altered ending, but also because of the budgetary limits on its scope, I am reminded that the first time I saw CONQUEST, the final moments made the hairs on the back of neck "rise."
If only Fox had ended the series with CONQUEST.

.html Conquest was and always will be my favorite ape movie. I especially enjoyed the original/director's cut on the blu ray released a couple of years back, having heard so much about the differences from the re-cut version since I was a kid. Marvel's adaptation followed the original script more closely. Finally seeing the original cut of the film, to me, was a holy grail of sorts. I was amazed that there was still a print after all these years. A very pleasant surprise. Rise was fun, though. Would love to see more ape adventures.

Well, the apes mostly don't talk in "Rise". Andy Serkis' performance was acknowledged for not being able to rely on words. Therefore the apes were silent!
It's a sign! "Silence is Golden"! The silent movie actors don't speak and neither do the apes! Why didn't I think of it before? I thought "Rise" was going to get nominations because it's an animal movie like "War Horse". But, no! It's going to get nominations because "Silence is Golden". "Rise" is going to get a tree full of nominations! OMG! OMG! OMG!

I thought "Rise" was going to get nominations because it's an animal movie like "War Horse". But, no! It's going to get nominations because "Silence is Golden". "Rise" is going to get a tree full of nominations! OMG! OMG! OMG!

.html On this Oscar Nomination Eve, let's not forget that the original POTA had it's share of Oscar noms, and pretty weighty stuff for a sci-fi movie back then. It received noms for Best Costume Design and Best Score. Of course, John Chambers received an Oscar but that was an honorary one since there was no makeup category then. POTA didn't "win" any Oscars, so if "Rise" does (such as for Visual FX) it will be a POTA first.
That was actually a pretty heady year for science fiction at the Oscars. "2001: A Space Odyssey" received nominations for Best Director, Best Script and Best Art Direction, and won for Best Visual FX. And Cliff Robertson actually won Best Actor for "Charly". <.html

.html Hello. I'm a 29-year old man from Texas. When I first watched the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" trailer online last summer, I decided it was time to watch all the other "Planet of the Apes" films because I had only heard of them, but had not watched them. I watched all the Ape movies last summer, knowing nothing about them beforehand. I never saw the previews for them, I never read anything about them, and I never saw the spoofs. (Or if I did, I had forgotten them, or never understood them in the first place.)
I thought the original "Planet of the Apes" was amazing. One of the greatest motion pictures ever made. It is not dated one bit. It has stood the test of time. The line "Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape" made me smile. It didn't surprise me when I got online, and discovered that this is one of the most famous movie lines ever. (I've also become a huge Charlton Heston fan since becoming a POTA fan.) I can see now why the original "Planet of the Apes" is a classic. It's become one of my favorite films of all time. The ending shocked me, and disturbed me. It gave me goosebumps. I honestly did not see that coming. I sat in shocked silence as the credits played. I really enjoyed all the other POTA pictures that followed as well, and I went into the theater watching "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" a new POTA fan and was able to catch several of the nods to the older films.
I now own all five Planet of the Apes pictures on blu-ray, the live-action TV series, and the animation show on DVD, and Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes", and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" on blu-ray, the novel by Pierre Boulle, and the four books that were based off the Planet of the Apes sequels, and several other Planet of the Apes related books, and even a Planet of the Apes t-shirt.
Anyhow, I look forward to posting with everyone. I hope we can have some good discussions of the Apes films. <.html

Here's another Hal Holbrook Pota conection.
What do Hal Holbrook and Roddy McDowall
have in common. Both went to Culver Military Academy.
And speaking of Mark Twain...in addition to Holbook's
Twain being performed there, William Windom performed
his James Thurber one man show there as well. His TV
series My World And Welcome To It was based on Thurber.

.htmlPersonally, Conquest has always been special, along with Battle, because they were the only two movie novels I had for years, and I read them to bits. The Conquest novel is, in my opinion, the best novelisation of any Apes movie and it , in my opinion, eclipses the movie itself.I happen to think that the Marvel adaptation of Conquest is also the best comics adaptation too! Without a novel or comic adaptation of RISE, it's difficult for it to burn its way as deeply into my subconscious as Conquest has---the mere fact that I am even pondering the question shows how damn good RISE is! .html.html I would have to say CONQUEST. RISE will always be a cheap imitator. It's easy to look back and complain of a film's short commings, especially due to budget which isn't fair. Today however I think we've become more laxed when we should be even more critical of newly produced films - so much more can be done in terms of production via technical advancements film's should look and sound better than ever. But they don't. They are mixed with too much bass, color is off terribly. Everything looks like the same Adobe filters have been applied. Story content and structure tries to be smart but only create more holes. Creativity, rather original works are less and less.
For me the entire end credit sequence in RISE seem thrown in due to bad writing and
editorial placement which made it seem more of a throw away or just to make up for bad story structure. It should have been in placed within the actual narrative. Yeah, CONQUEST wins. - Scott B.

One thing Andy Serkis has said is he saw and loved "Behind the POTA". So he knows the history of the POTA and where it's coming from.
The important thing is "have the suits at Fox seen "Behind the POTA" and do they know where it's coming from"?
I'm nervous about the sequel because I don't see Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver as writers with that much "gravitas," and the script for RISE clearly shows their weaknesses, though I do expect that another writer or two will be brought in -- though that may mean nothing in the end -- I still worry that no one at Fox will realize that the sequel actually needs to carry more heft than RISE. If not, we may have the making of another BENEATH before us.
Let us all pray to the Lawgiver.

.htmlDon't Oscar nominees tend to be November / December releases? Rise came out in August. Granted, multiple Oscar-winner Silence of the Lambs came out in January or February, but was a rare exception (or so I was told when working in Los Angeles almost a couple of decades ago). Hollywood types aren't known for their long-term memories so the "recency effect" is significant. I've not seen data on this subject but perhaps someone else has?
At any rate, Oscar ceremony viewership is reportedly on the decline. I read a couple of years ago that it's audience is comprised of mostly housewives and hairstylists.
I am still taken aback at how Rise was so thoroughly shirked according to nominations lists like this one:

Don't Oscar nominees tend to be November / December releases?

Hello.

Well, it was a pretty bad year for apes at the Oscars. "Rise" got the expected Visual FX nom but that's it. Even "Project Nim" didn't get a nomination. Andy Serkis didn't get one for Best Supporting Actor (nor did the expected Albert Brooks) but the campaign for him and the dialogue about motion capture was still historic. So "Rise" takes a backseat to the original POTA re: Oscar.

Look on the bright side... RISE could win an Oscar. That would be better than PLANET did. Remember, Chambers' Oscar was a "special" one, gotten by the kind of Oscar campaigning that only an inside Hollywood guy like Jacobs could muster. <.html

The FX company WETA has definitely had
Oscar action before (they've won the FX Oscar 5 out of the last 10 years) but
"Rise" is the first Oscar nod for Daniel Barrett as an FX supervisor. Here's a
chat with him. The video has a look at Caesar's skull.
An interesting thing about the nominations is that
some said Andy Serkis shouldn't be nominated because it's animation, not acting.
But people were surprised that "Tin Tin" (also featuring Serkis and also done by
WETA) was not nominated for Best Animated Film, and some suggest a bias against
motion capture from animators. So "mo-cap" seems to be neither fish nor fowl at
the moment as people try to decide what it is (and what it means to their
jobs). <.html <.html

One of my favorite "Old Hollywood" movie actors is Boris Karloff. (Check out the excellent authorized biography "Boris Karloff: More Than a Monster," if you're so inclined.) Karloff was one of the founding members of the Screen Actors Guild, and Boris Karloff HATED the Motion Picture Academy. For me, that's enough said.

I doubt he's personally that broken up about it. What an Oscar nomination, and hopefully a win, means to the "talent" in the business is that the phone will ring, offers will be made, and a higher salary can be demanded and probably got. It's not personal, it's business. The Motion Picture Academy is primarily an organization to promote the motion picture business. The awards were founded to create publicity for that promotion of the industry. That's all it essentially is. Way too much is and always has been made of it. Most who manage to garner nominations and awards are doing quite well in the industry already -- far better than 90% of those that struggle to make it in Hollywood -- and to feel sorry for them because they don't, for this season any way, get what they want is more than a little silly. Many "artists" have had great and memorable careers and have never gotten anywhere near an
Oscar (like Roddy McDowall). Andy Serkis is doing just fine.

Heston was and still is a favorite target for the "Hollywood Left," and Heston gave them lots of ammo. But, Heston was an adult and he knew what he was doing by being so outspoken for conservative causes. He gave as good as he got. Yeah, comments by some about Heston once he was sick were petty and cruel, of course, but if you want to be mad at someone, I'll tell you who you should really be mad at.... Tim Roth. Tim Roth. Just do some checking out of his comments over the years about Heston -- "you may not like what you find."

No, Silly! I'm not talking about POTA. I'm talking about Moses. Maybe Heston's most indelible role was as Moses in "The Ten Commandments" and now the studios are hot to retell the Moses story. Actually, Biblical epics are hot right now. There's the Adam and Eve story "Paradise Lost", and the "Black Swan" director is doing an expensive "Noah" movie.
Fox and "Rise of the POTA" producer Peter Chernin wanted to do Moses but it looks like they will have to make way for Steven Spielberg, who's interested in Warner Bros.' "gritty" version. "Rise" itself was devised by the writers as a Moses story (but instead of crossing the Red Sea, Caesar crossed the Red Bridge and headed for the Red Woods) so it would be interesting for Chernin to take the actual story on as well. But I guess all roads lead to Spielberg so he probably gets first crack.
They've rebooted "The Omega Man", POTA, Moses, so I guess "Ben Hur" is next? What's the Heston movie YOU want to see rebooted?

Thank you! I actually miss the color yellow!
The Godfather, especially in the old timey scenes
had a great yellow. Now every director seems to
want everything really dark and very blue. The one
scene in Sweeney Todd that was in bright sunshine
was literally a breath of fresh air. I understand the choice
but it seems so over used nowadays. I'm tired of it. When
I show for TVs I look for how yellow the yellows are.

.html.html I've never like George Clooney. George Clooney killed Batman in "Batman and Robin." lol
Seriously though, he not only killed Batman but it was one of the worst acting performances I've ever seen. The guy would say his lines in the film then suddenly look down in almost every scene. He does it about a hundred times in the movie. I remember that used to dive me crazy. And yet they call that "Acting." What a joke. And now Oscar Nominated for Best Actor, it only goes to show that it's not about acting anymore but rather who's popular in Hollywood's-IN-Circle-Croud these days. The whole thing is a joke. And that's why the Oscars get what it deserve, The title of "Thee most boringest award show on the planet." And rightly so.

Listen to him. He knows what he's talking about. This guy has held John Chambers' Oscar.
I don't want to diminish John Chambers' Oscar one bit -- it was well deserved -- but it's an historic fact that it was an "honorary" Oscar given after a year-long campaign by Arthur Jacobs and Fox to persuade the Academy to "grant" the honor. (It should also be noted that Jacobs and Fox were successful the year before with the Academy, doing the same kind of campaigning in order to get DOCTOR DOLITTLE a Best Picture nomination, which they did and which was highly critized at the time as undeserved.)
My point in bringing this up is just to remind everyone that PLANET didn't "win" an Oscar, and that if RISE does win for its FX then it will be the first APES movie to actually win an Oscar.

Not one of Michael Moore's better moments. Heston out classed him all the way. I'm not "into" guns, but someone like Heston, who collected guns, when you think about it, how is it any different than being a collector of stamps? As long as you're not shooting people with them -- unless they're actually about to assault you -- a gun collection is just a collection. He collected guns, I collect DVDs and movie posters. Big deal. (Now, of course, I could mention that Heston did a better job shooting off his mouth than he ever did with a gun, but I won't do that.)

Through a clerical error by Fox, McDowall's name was submitted for Best Actor and was subsequently disqualified for Best Supporting Actor. The studio publicly apologized to McDowall, but he was never nominated and as to whether he would have won -- only the Lawgiver knows.
It should also be noted that for many years McDowall served in several positions on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
