I don't recall that interesting scene from the movie, but thanks for sharing it with us. Might anybody know what that device might be that Dodge is utilizing? They'd already sent a signal to Earth that they'd landed, while still onboard Icarus. And they'd already checked for breathable air before blowing the hatch. Perhaps he used it to check the water for potability. I tend to doubt that it's navigation-related, since Colonel Taylor pointed them in a direction with no particular reason in mind. ("None at all."). Any thoughts? :-) <.html

I started this from another thread because it was difficult to post any other way on this mobile browser. Fans (like Hunter) in this group have uncovered lots of rare POTA stuff but I have never seen this before !

"Harry Potter" and "Transformers" made $ 1 billion each and their studios are very grateful. Paramount is spending big on Transformers' behalf.

There won't be a more deserved award this year---I glad SOMEBODY has taste!I'm struggling to recall a more boring line up than this year's Oscars.Personally, apart from RISE not getting the acting nod, I'm also a liitle peeved that the 'little Chris' effect in Captain America has been ignored. From the other nominations in visual effects,RISE is a shoe-in, isn't it? Don't count on RISE winning the Visual Effects Award. I think the last HARRY POTTER is more likely to win, not only because it's more popular and the grand final of what most people think is a great series of films (which alludes me), but also because the FX shots in POTTER far outnumber those in RISE.
However, RISE is a significant new step in the evolution of motion capture -- but do you really think Academy voters are intellectual enough to consider that?

Generally I'd say the nostrils of the gorillas aren't large enough. Study stills from the original movie and John Chambers' original sculpts.
And could someone tell me why a gorilla would feel the need to decorate his eye patch? Did John Wayne decorate his in TRUE GRIT? I think Wayne would call this gorilla a prissy boy!

.htmlEveryone is pretty much expecting "Rise" to win. The FX in "Harry Potter" and "Transformers" are great, but been there, done that. "Rise" was expected to create believable apes, which is a lot harder than machines or dragons. And the Oscars have had a long love affair with WETA. They've never been wild about Harry. Plus all the Andy Serkis talk will probably make it a slam dunk (he didn't get the nomination so give the apes something). Probably "Harry" will win a token something. It's up for Best Makeup and Best Art Direction. Even "Transformers" has two sound nominations. FX is the only category to "Rise" and shine.

On the 44th Anniversary of the World Premiere of PLANET OF THE APES on February 8th -- and that's a reminder that there were 44 POTA cards in the Topps bubble gum collection (that's somekind of minor milestone) -- there's something completely unrelated on TV you might want to check out Wednesday night, but it kind of relates.
On "Rock Center with Brian Williams," at 9PM Eastern, they will be doing a segment on the growing controversy over the continued use of chimpanzees in biomedical research. I doubt it'll be a pleasant thing to watch, but there might be a mention of how RISE has helped raise the awareness of people on this matter.
And remember PROJECT NIM comes out on DVD this week, too!

Nothing lasts forever. While I, too, miss the days of neighborhood movie houses (the local bijou) and Manhattan movie places with balconies and huge lobbies, those things are just gone and, well, you just have to accept it, but I really wouldn't want to go back to the days of my childhood, when you could only see a movie when it was shown in a theatre and then gone until it was shown on TV, televised by some network or independent station -- and with 16mm pan&scan transfers. No wa. It's so nice now to practically have any movie you want at your finger tips and, now with Blu-ray and some of the restorations, looking better than they might have in their original runs. I don't even miss viewing actual 35mm film at the theatre anymore. When properly done, digital projection is great.
And at home now with the dig display devices. Did anyone else see the recent story on the "Cinemascope" LCD displays coming? Forget 16X9, now there's 23X9!

It's for the Genesis Awards, which celebrate
animal-friendly movies, so it's grading on a curve. But it's up against "War
Horse". I remember the original POTA got a "Film Classic" award from them in the
'90's and Jerry Goldsmith accepted it.

720 is adequate for a 23" display, but it wouldn't be for a 50" display. Hope you "upgrade" to a bigger display sometime. It really makes a viewing difference.
As to the other thing you're talking about... I don't understand what you're talking about.
The Lake Powell scenes in PLANET were entirely shot at Lake Powell. Except for the process shot of the spaceship model sinking, which was shot in the second Sersen tank out at the Fox Ranch, there was no pool that the actors jumped into.

For a 23 inch screen, 720 is fine. Bigger screen sizes (arguably starting at 32") show the difference between 720 and 1080 more perceptively. Some say it does't make any real difference until you go over 40".

.html Fox has just announced that their "X-Men" sequel "The Wolverine" will hit 7/26/13. What does that mean for "Rise 2" also being released in the Year of Our Boulle 50th? Dunno, but of course Fox released a POTA and an "X-Men" movie last summer together. But "Wolverine" looks to be taking the late summer spot so probably that would leave "Rise 2" for earlier (May? June?). Fox also is co-financing Spielberg's big sci-fi "Robopocalypse" flick (7/3/13) but only distributes it overseas so it's kinda half theirs. And they've got the next "Die Hard" movie early in that year.
So that leaves early summer for "Rise 2" (or X-mas?) if it's coming out in 2013. Is it important there be a new POTA for the 50th anniversary of POTA itself? Yes.
The 2013 dance card is filling up. Here's how the biggies look:
"Iron Man 3" - May 3
"Pacific Rim" (a "Godzilla"-type movie) - May 10
"Star Trek 2nd" - May 17
"Fast 6" - May 24
"Lone Ranger" (Johnny Depp) - May 31
"Superman" - June 14
"Robopocalypse" - July 3
"The Wolverine" - July 26
"Smurfs 2" - Aug. 2

.htmlThanks to all for the feedback. My screen's less than 3 years old and still under warranty so I'm glad to learn that I can hang onto it without sacrificing my upcoming Blu-Ray enjoyment of classic Apes movies.
I wonder if the 5 Classic Apes movies are being economically released in Blu Ray with those 1 or 2 revisiting movies which came out sometime after the turn of the century?

Say, how many sequels have won Best Picture? "Silence of the Lambs" (kinda).
Just those 3. And one of them had FX by WETA.

45:31 - when Caesar shakes off the blues and starts his day.
1:29:44 - when Franco yells his name and startles Caesar (right before the start of the helicopter stuff).
They also did some of the nose wrinkling that Roddy did to bring his makeup to life. <.html

OK, so "Rise of the POTA" is up for the Oscar for
Best FX. The Visual FX Society had their awards. This is like the SAG awards for
actors or the Directors Guild for directors. How did "Rise" do? Well, there's a
lot of awards, they get down to the nitty gritty. "Rise" won two, for best FX in
an FX film and for Best FX character (Caesar). BUT, some of the Oscar
competitors won some too. "Hugo" won for Best FX in a non-FX film and for
"virtual cinematography", and "Transformers" won for models and environment.
"Rango" swept the animation awards and is expected to win the Animated Film
Oscar. Harry Potter, he flew his broom home alone. But best FX in an
FX film is the biggie and "Rise" is still the front runner.

Wow. Clearly you need to get educated about how computers work and
how CG art is done. Putting aside the craft, skill, and imagination
of actually producing the artwork that is later animated, how do you
think that software came to be in the first place?

.htmlThey definitely WILL have to grow a pair. The deleted scene showing Bright Eyes' mate (and Caesar's biological Dad) being gunned down as he tries to save her from the poachers would have made a wonderful echo of Caesar taking GenSys apart to save Cornelia. It would have--had they damn well used the blasted scenes!!!The film could easily have had even more emotional depth than it already does---the decision kind of reminds me of the pregnant Nova stuff---would Planet really have been the worse for including the pregnancy? All the more reason why a RISE novel could have been wonderful, fleshing out the story.Dagnammit.John, Scrolls.

NINTH???!!! What next---another Oscar for Clooney??!!! John.
