Nothing else that year would have stood a chance. Honorary or not, it's an Oscar.
The point is that PLANET didn't win an Oscar. John Chambers was given an honorary one.
If RISE gets the award for best FX then it'll be the first APES movie to actually win an Oscar..

.htmlThe author sure did go out of his or her way to condescend regarding POTA. (S)he even spoils the ending coming right out of the starting gate. I guess that's the risk that's run by movies which are designed to make statements. Some folks will have an axe to grind against 'em.

.htmlFox can release a restored POTA 68 anytime . Its the 45th right now and depending on the Book, the start of filming or release of film, Fox has anytime they want to release a new version of POTA and or sequels(if more of Conquest can be found-prolouge). From 2012- 2018 any excuse is valid and the sooner the better. They have to strike while the iron is hot and thats always been a poor habit of Fox's. They tend to think and stall and procrastinate. C'mon Fox release it all now while we wait for a sequel to Rise. John M.

All the more reason why a RISE novel could have been wonderful, fleshing out the story.Dagnammit.John, Scrolls.

There's a reason that "The Artist"- which is arguably one of the best
reviewed and received film to come out in quite some time and also the topic of
the original thread- has 10 Oscar nominations. "Rise" has one- and it's not
because the member of the Academy didn't "get it", or it was "ahead of it's
time", or that no one really understood what an incredibly
nuanced performance Serkis turned in and blah blah blah. It was a
popcorn film. Big budgeted, masturbatory film making a la Independence Day. Is
there anything wrong with making movies like that? No. Is there anything wrong
with people taking the equivalent of Pizza Hut pizza and trying to pass it off

Oh, I agree completely that too many films depend way too much on
CGI these days. And it's used much, much more than most people
realize. I haven't seen it, but I'd be shocked if the "The Artist"
doesn't have a number of CGI shots. They use it now to change the
sky, add buildings, add walls, etc. The best CGI is the kind you
never notice.
But to dismiss the artistry that went into "Rise" is silly.
I'm not one who thinks "Rise" deserves a bunch of Oscars. While I
thoroughly enjoyed the film, the script has numerous problems, the
human characters were by-and-large irrelevant, and there are leaps
of logic that are pretty significant. But the artistry that went
into its effects are certainly Oscar-worthy, just as is the artistry
that went into every film nominated for its visual effects.

I wish I could say this news excites me, but it just doesn't. However, some of you might be interested.
La-La Land has announced a new CD release, which will be available to order next week: a three-disc set of Danny Elfman's score for Tim Burton's much-maligned but high-grossing remake of PLANET OF THE APES, featuring the complete score on the first two discs and the original soundtrack sequencing on Disc Three

"Rise of the POTA" received a nomination
for Patrick Doyle's score from the International Film Music Critics
Association. Though it's probably a legit complaint that there's too many people
giving out awards this time of year, this one is neat because it spotlights more
of the music scores, an underrated part of a film (the Oscar for Best Score
tends to be the usual suspects). "Rise" is nominated for "Best
Action/Adventure/Thriller" score with "Drive", "Capt. America", "Mission:
Impossible 4" and "Real Steel". Curiously, it did not get nominated in the
"Fantasy/ Science Fiction" category ("Hugo"?). Doyle also received a
nomination for Best Documentary Score for "Jig".

Yes, Fox only largely owns the original STAR WARS, so when that gets it's 3-D conversion, the studio will have a larger interest in it.
There's no "supposedly" about it -- PLANET has been completely remastered for HD (though the "true" nature of its stereo soundtrack is still unknown) -- and we know it because the recent 1080i HBO and Cinemax 16X9 cropped showings are that remastering, and glimpses of the full images are on a RISE Blu-ray featurette.
I watched the current PLANET Blu-ray on the 8th and was surprised with the number of new scratches and dust I spotted in the transfer. There's definitely a need for a new Blu-ray of the original film, and I'm sure one will come and it will be spectacular.
But their hasn't been a 3-D conversion of PLANET. I doubt one will be done for a theatrical re-release, but sometime in the future one may appear on Blu-ray. "Lawgiver, who knows about the future?" I'm not personally interested in a 3-D PLANET -- I think 3-D looks fake -- but if Fox sees potential money to be made from it, it will probably be done.

I never fail to be amazed at how crazy some people are for what to me has always looked like inauthentic-looking cheap toy junk, but I know that if this stuff had been around in 1968 and I'd played with it back then, it would be a different story now. I'm glad it's the way it is, though, because I don't have to spend the money collecting it. Dodged a bullet there.

Well, that was clever but not particularly that well scripted. You could make something much sharper out of that. If you've ever read Twain on the subject of man, you'll know there's much that could be utilized for this kind of satire.
It's fun to imagine what the POTA concept would have been had Mark Twain written it in 1897. I think Twain would have been much harder on man than Boulle was.

Could this event actually be very well attended? Will the success and popularity of RISE be confirmed by actual evidence of a reawaking of POTA fanatics with a sold-out house?

I wonder if they'll re-release Rise in 3D.
That might push it enough to topple
POTA2K1 off the top of the Apes
franchise list once and for all.

beats Rise for second place on the list.

wonder how much it would cost Fox to do so, and how long it would likely take.
I might postpone purchasing a Blu Ray version until that release date, if it's
not too far from now.
I wonder how many older movies get remastered
nowadays? Maybe most successful ones already have been? At any rate, Phantom
Menace's and Rise's success will hopefully inspire Fox...

Well, that was clever but not particularly that well scripted. You
could make something much sharper out of that. If you've ever read Twain
on the subject of man, you'll know there's much that could be utilized for
this kind of satire.
It's fun to imagine what the POTA concept would have been had Mark Twain
written it in 1897. I think Twain would have been much harder on man
than Boulle was.

Sounds encouraging. Any idea when it will finally be released? Meanwhile, might the other POTA's have been digitally remastered too? Or might they be candidates for such remastering? I'm looking to get my own copies of each one, but I'd like to do it right.

I would love to have all the sequels reconstructed from the original negatives but it seems only Planet 68 would get the 35mm restored print treatment. Ironically the sequels have the best sound. Personally if nothing can be done the original powerfull Mono soundtrack that the film(POTA68) was released with should be used or atleast an option on the Blu-ray. The Mono tracks on video now are the fake stereo tracks taken from the Mono track and folded down, its bad. The original stems to POTA68 are around but like I said adnauseum it would take alittle more effort and Fox just doesnt go their. Even if we had to use elements we know we have-stereo music, mono dialouge-it can all be mixed and soundeffects sweetened to make a perfectly suitable soundtrack. I have a bad feeling the soundtrack will be the same old same old. Beneath used to be poor and that has been 90% remideed so Planet can be done. PS, take the reverb off the Conquest theme. Listen to the
isolated music tracks they sound great!
Take care, John M.

.htmlWhat are you going on about, my Lord? "Rise" is the number 1 "Apes" movie ever. EVER!
RISE: $482 m. worldwide http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=riseoftheapes.htm
POTA2001: $362 m. worldwide http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=planetoftheapes01.htm
As for the others, we'll never know worldwide adjusted for inflation because that stuff wasn't as readily available back then. But probably they didn't do as well as "Rise" any way you slice it because they weren't considered "A" films. It's much more acceptible for adults to see sci-fi films these days.
While we're on the subject, how did "Rise" do on the 2011 film list now that the late tallies are in? It went down a couple notches thanks to "Mission: Impossible", "Puss in Boots" and "Sherlock Holmes". But it's STILL the # 1 non-sequel, non-kids' flick of the year. I won't bother with the dough:
1. Harry Potter 8
2. Transformers 3
3. Pirates 4
4. Kung-Fu Panda 2
5. Mission: Impossible 4 (welcome back, Tom Cruise)
6. Fast 5
7. Hangover 2
8. Smurfs
9. Cars 2
10. Puss in Boots
11. Sherlock Holmes 2
12. Rio
13. Rise
FYI: "Phantom Menace" is at $967 million worldwide, so probably this 3D release will give it membership in the $ Billion Club. Congrats, Jar Jar!

I'd agree with you on that. And while I have no issues with CGI being used

We know Zina as Arn from "The Legacy". That was
my favorite POTA episode and I've always liked the chemistry between the
makeshift family of Virdon, Arn and Kraik. Plus it had great settings (including
the "Young Frankenstein" castle) and good interplay between Urko and Zauis. I
watched "The Legacy" tonight, as well as "Who's That Knocking On My Door?". Zina
was the star of Martin Scorsese's first feature film, opposite Harvey Keitel in
his screen debut (Jackie Earle "Kraik" Haley worked with Scorsese 40 years later
on "Shutter Island").
This doesn't have anything to do with the movie
but it's got cool apes with weapons:
Zina's passion was bringing the arts to disabled
kids and it's one of those unfair things that her end was so violent. But the
life she lived was filled with what she loved doing. Thanks for enriching
us, Zina.
