Yeah, I'm glad Braeden did the role even though he wasn't "into" it. Maybe a testament to the director, Don Taylor, considered an actor's director. And I'm glad to finally get Braeden's take on it, even if it is bad news.

Since I never got to interview Braeden for POTA REVISITED, I was entertained by the remark that he was clueless and out of the loop with the genre he was performing in during his role in ESCAPE.If Braeden wasn't connecting with the dialogue he was spewing as Hasslein, he sure as hell convinced me he did. I think Braeden's performance is Escape is almost oscar worthy and is letter perfect in every way. In fact, if it wasn't for his performance as Hasslein, a great deal of the films pathos and drama might be lost. A lesser actor could have cost the films impact greatly.-JR

This just jumped out at me. I'm sure you meant to type 'brother' but if he did indeed say mother can you elaborate. Thanks.

No, he said "mother". He saw a picture of Hari Rhodes and thought it was his mother at first.

Im very surprised also at his(Braeden) retorts. He does much for alturistic causes and is a very noble man as it seems and the Apes films in general are about mans follies so I thought maybe hed be more gracious. Was he invited to do interviews for all the documentaries and if not he could be bitter.
The theater only holds 1500 seats and about 500 were filled. Even if it were filled the money going from 5 grand to 15 grand is a drop in the bucket, it still would not be a profit event. Like I said in many posts the Apes are always treated like an Uncle no one wants on Thanksgiving. All the films should be 35mm restored, played in a large classy Cinema and have some big name backing it, not nesessaraly an Apes person. If film elements cant be found(BS) then atleast a 4K presentation on disc not a 2k like POTA68s restoration(though in fairness they-IVC-did more than just a 2K retoration, atleast thats what they say).
To me Apes are never handled properly or atleast since 1974. Take care, John M.

Absolutly. This whole fiasco is a very pernicious reaction on Braedens part. Maybe im taking it alittle to far but for an actor who had a role that was performed well and was an essential role of the Apes mythos is very peculiar. Or not? Take care, John M.

The POTA marathon at the famous Egyptian Theater (2/18/12) went on for 10 hours, from 5 PM to 3 AM. Let's see what I can relate from my still foggy brain...

First of all, it definitely wasn't a sell out. It filled the usual 1/3rd capacity, with a mix of die hards and newbies determined to stick it out. So there was still quite a few people left at the end. The highlight of entering the theater was Jeff Barkley dressed as Julius and also someone as an ANSAnaut. Certainly added an event feel to something with such a disappointing turnout.
It started off with screening a print of "Planet". They said it was a new print but I doubt it. I've seen "Planet" in a theater so many times, I enjoyed watching it but the print was nothing special. It was an enthusiastic audience mixed with the usual individuals who maybe enjoy the "camp" appeal of Heston's performance too much.

Q & A
Next was the Q & A with Eric Braeden (Hasslein), Don Murray (Breck), H.M. Wynant (Hoskyns), Austin Stoker (MacDonald # 2) and Lou Wagner (Lucius), pinch hitting for the under the weather Linda Harrison. Obviously the idea was to have someone from each film and technically Lou was in "Beneath". The moderator was Steven Jay Rubin.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0746169/
Lou was asked how he got involved and said he had hazel eyes and the apes needed brown eyes but he was willing to wear contacts or whatever it took and the director liked that.
They were asked to talk about Arthur Jacobs and Don Murray offered he was an old school producer who wasn't cynical. He didn't feel Arthur was portrayed accurately in the Oscar-nominated movie "My Weekend With Marilyn".
Eric Braeden apologized for being a stick in the mud but he has no interest in science-fiction and had no interest in POTA. He was there for a paycheck. He prefers stories with "realism". He admitted sometimes he didn't even know what Hasslein was talking about but he was able to sell the dialogue. And he felt Hasslein had a justified view, though the obvious sympathy was with the apes. He also said he had no interest in Hollywood parties and got involved with "Escape" through one of Jacobs' famous ping pong tournaments. He also mentioned he had worked on Jacobs' ill-fated sci-fi movie "Journey of the Oceanauts" which never got made because Arthur died.
H. M. Wynant said he didn't remember the "Conquest" experience but he remembered the people. He compared J. Lee Thompson to Franklin Schaffner in terms of being "mathematical" as a director (I guess that means being prepared, knowing what he wants, getting the most out of it visually he could). He had known Don Murray long before "Conquest". In fact, he considered Don's father Denny Murray to be one of his mentors. He considers "Conquest" one of his projects that will live forever, even though Hoskyns wasn't one of his biggest roles.
Austin Stoker mentioned during filming of "Battle" the orangutans (led by Paul Williams) breaking into a Supremes song and that was the first time he saw J. Lee laugh on set. He said he was cast in "Battle" because he sounded like the previous MacDonald, Hari Rhodes. In fact he remembered seeing a photo of Rhodes out of the corner of his eye and thinking it was his own mother at first. Both MacDonalds had similar facial features.
Don Murray mentioned learning his Breck lines in German and saying them with that intonation. The different versions of "Conquest" were brought up and Don said from his point of view they had decided to bring him back in "Battle" and that's why he survived. But he had no interest in repeating the role, not because he didn't like it but because he had "done it" and once was enough. Don also said the themes of POTA are eternal and ones we still struggle with and that's why the films will live forever.
Lou Wagner said he studied chimps for his role and when Roddy got around to showing him the chimp walk Roddy had developed, it was the same walk Lou had developed on his own.
Someone asked the difference between making films then and making them now. Braeden said he likes modern films because there's more realism and even TV like Showtime, etc. is more interesting. Don Murray said the advantage of older movies is they didn't use CG for everything and stuff was real. He's not a fan of CG (though somehow no one brought up "Rise of the POTA").

They hung around a little bit for photos and autographs and then it was back to the movies, or more specifically, the blu-rays.

"Beneath": looked fine on blu-ray but couldn't compare to the print I saw in 2007. There's something off on the "Beneath" blu ray. But newbies in the audience couldn't believe the ending and were wondering if this was the last movie. Where could they go from here?
"Escape": looked fine. I'd seen the blu ray screened at the Egyptian about a year ago. Good movie.
"Conquest": My favorite movie of the marathon. For starters I'd never seen "Conquest" (or "Battle") in a theater. Plus, in watching all 5 it stands out with the most unique look. It just looked great in a theater. They did the recently found "violent" version and of course it looks even bloodier on a big screen, the bloody bastards. I like when anything is not "too" popular things tend to have an edge and not to many money people get their paws into the pot. John M.

This is exactly how I feel about the era of Apedom when there was only PLANET.  It was a short period -- Feb. 1968 to May 1970 -- but it was a time that is the core of POTA nostalgia for me, before General Ursus, human telepathic mutants, time warps, Baby Milo, Virgil, Burke, Virdon, Galen and a cartoon series and all that stuff that came later and you either liked it or you didn't, but it never matched that which was PLANET.

PLANET OF THE APES was an "A" picture that starred Charlton Heston with a cool shock ending and the movie was already being called a classic.  It was sunny skies and hot weather, deserts and green cornfields and a awesome beach with cliffs and the sounds of the surf, and the talking apes, of course, and the gorillas on horseback, and neighborhood movie houses, popcorn smell in the lobby and the posters on display -- and it was the greatest thing since I don't know what.  I miss those days and that's why APES still has a hold on me.

dear group,  here are my ape memories from houston texas.  the first photo is a  planet ad from the local paper the houston post  dec 1968.  went to the theatre to see planet for the first time it was great.  they showed a bugs bunny cartoon and about  3  film comming attractions.  then the film started with the fox logo fanfare music.  my most favorite scene in the film is at the end where dr zira--kim hunter says  WHAT WILL  HE FIND OUT THERE DOCTOR.  and dr zaius--maurice evans replies  HIS DESTINY--then that wonderful jerry goldsmith music cues up showing taylor and nova riding down the beach toward the statue of liberty.  i liked the film so much i saw the film for a second time around.  the theatre was called  general cinema 1 and 2 in meyerland plaza.  the theatre opened in 1965 and closed in 1995.  the second photo showing the go ape title card and the last photo is the go ape marathon  marquee in 1973 california.   from william burge

Here we are, a few days from the Oscars (the final ballots are due in today) and Andy Serkis' lack of a nomination still stings some. Now there's the idea going around for a "collaborative performance" Oscar for performances that are a mix of actors and craftspeople. Not just motion capture but makeup and whatever else comes along. Probably the worthy performances will still be few and far between because these roles are usually just "monsters" but it's worth a think. Maybe they can call it the Andy Serkis Award. Anyway, this is a good montage of Andy's work.

Planet was on tv over here this week and, of course, I was duty bound to watch it.It's funny how it seems more 'immediate' when it's on telly.Something that has never sunk into my thick skull before is Lucius' speech about the 'ani-vivisection' people. So, there ARE Apes who oppose the use of humans for experiments and Zira, an intelligent, compassionate, chimp, chooses to experiment on humans anyway. So, is she actually as evil as some of the Committee in Escape later (earlier!?)thought?   That's one of the ambiguities of POTA that makes it interesting. As they point out in "Escape", the apes are doing to humans what modern humans do to animals. Are the people in our labs "evil"? Or maybe more accurately, the scientists from a century ago or more when there was more dogma? Maybe more important, Zira has a change of conscience.

Personally, I don't think this is an appropriate arena for discussing monsters like Mengele.
Zira's attitude to her 'subjects' is certainly one of the great ambiguities that Apes always sheds a glaring light upon.Zira continues her work in Beneath (she's there by an operating table when Brent is brought in after capture). At this point Zira is aware of several talking, thinking humans and came to love one.I think the Nova pregnancy scene is a real miss on this topic. In (some versions of!) the Marvel adaptation,Zira explains how Nova is a totally different species to Taylor---had the pregnancy scene survived, as it does in the original Marvel version, then Zira HAD to question whether the humans she was experimenting on were capable of intelligent thought and feelings--because Taylor could clearly breed with them(at Zira's behest!).The new analogy we have today is Will Rodman--he loves Caesar like a son, but blissfully experiments on Koba.If Will Rodman found a cure to AIDS or cancer, would he be morally wrong--would Zira?
This is why APES Rules--it's deep!!! John.

I did not go into a diatribe about Men@@@@. Like Zira he was "Doing his job" as those creeps from long ago used as an excuse and Zira was simply doing the same. Not comparing what they did but why they did what they do.

Things seem to have gone smoothly for the Oscars after installing new producers and Billy Crystal. But one speed bump has been the Sacha Baron Cohen controversy. When the Academy heard he was going to walk the red carpet as "The Dictator", the title character of his new movie, they banned him from the ceremony (he is in the multi-nominated "Hugo"). In response, he has made this video. In addition to listing other indignities, he also bemoans the lack of nominations for "Planet".

.html
Some people are under the impression that the human characters in "Rise of the POTA" are the weak link. Probably. But I don't blame the actors. It was more the roles they were given and where the director and writers chose to focuse their attention (the director said as much in his DVD commentary, that he concentrated on the ape story). The humans were written more as sign posts for the story. I think it had a good cast.
But would it have been a better movie with different actors? I guess we'll never know, but Movieline speculates in a thoughtful article that the ticket might have been Mark Ruffalo instead of James Franco in the key role of Will. I guess we'll get a chance to judge for ourselves when Ruffalo plays one of the most famous sci-fi scientists of all, the Incredible Hulk in this summer's "The Avengers".

"Rise of the POTA" is still the frontrunner to win the Best Visual FX Oscar, despite recent momentum from "Harry Potter" (which won the BAFTA and might get rewarded for the franchise) and "Hugo" (which has history on it's side as a Best Picture Nominee, among others). It all comes down to Sunday. Just sayin'.

I've seen both "Hugo" and "The Artist" and I'd prefer "Hugo" to win some of the biggies (though it looks like "The Artist" is going to sweep). But in the fx category I think "Rise" was the one that really wowed people and moved the field forward (and failed at certain points; that's part of trailblazing). "Hugo" blew me away more with it's art direction.

If "Rise of the POTA" wins tonight, it will be Joe Letteri's personal 5th Oscar as FX supervisor for Weta Digital (he's won for "The Two Towers", "Return of the King", "King Kong" and "Avatar"). But he acknowledges it's tough competition and doesn't just assume he'll win: "All the work was really good. With "Hugo", the train; and in "The Transformers", the robots...People vote for what they see, and all the movies did well".
His co-nominees for "Rise", Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White and Daniel Barrett, are all first-timers. Good luck, gentlemen.

Subject: Minorities "under-represented" at Oscars. How about APES???
.html
Here's a new study out of the U. of Southern California which states that minorities are under-represented at the Oscars when it comes to awards recipients:

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.f93648e502555ea3e976efe113d96c98.71&show_article=1

WHY DON'T THEY EXAMINE AND PREACH ABOUT HOW APES ARE UNDER-REPRESENTED in terms of Oscar recipients? To paraphrase Charlton Heston during an event of his which I attended in 1991, it's because they have no union. (He was answering a question from the audience about why cattle in Dances With Wolves were paid so little).

Seriously though, Caesar deserves recognition tonight...but won't enough of it (if any at all). :-(

I wonder if this new phenomenon could play out in the rise sequel:

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/apps-apes-orangutans-using-ipads-paint-video-chat-174457692.html"

One implication of it (other than mass-communication capabilities between simians) is available from this excerpt from an article on iPads and dolphins:

"The young two-year-old Merlin (not the first two-year-old to enjoy the device!) is reportedly able to use his snout to touch photos of objects on the iPad's touchscreen after being shown their real-world counterparts. "This is an easy task for a dolphin, but it is a necessary building block towards our goal of a complete language interface between humans and dolphins," said Kassewitz."

Once enough of our simian friends are watching movies and such, maybe the Oscars will stop discriminating against 'em so much ;-) Or maybe we'll see an increased demand for shows that are actually worth watching for a change.

I delayed posting on this until the steam stopped fizzing out of my ears. What a totally, totally bollocks decision by 'The Academy'.Why don't they just call it the 'Film's too crap to win big but, as it's Marty, throw him a bone and forget integrity Oscar'? RISE was THE best special effect I have ever witnessed. The Oscars are a total joke. And they's been biased against APES for years--HOW did Jerry NOT win best score?HOW did Morton NOT win costumes? No nomination even for Rick Baker (I know he didn't want one, but I need a pattern to make my point!).A black and white silent French movie wins best picture??!! I rest my case.John, Scrolls.

Minor nitpick: your POV character would use American rather British-style spelling of 'color'. But other than that, you wrote an intense piece that takes us into his mind very realistically.

Thanks Stuart, I'll set that right in a future revision.

Happens nearly every year. And I'll say it again, it lessens
the achievement of the Oscar winners who deserved their
awards. When Kim won her's, every member of the cast
also won in a near sweep, with the exception of Marlon
Brando.  Everyone agreed, he gave a game changing
performance.  But, Borgart gave a great performance
as well, and it was "His Turn" for losing the Oscar
for Casablanca.  And he was right to boycott it.
I respect him and George C. Scott for doing it.
