.htmlIt's come to my attention that some would like "Rise of the POTA" action figures pronto but Fox seems in no hurry. I'm here to help.
CAESAR: Just use your Mego Cornelius or Galen figure. Pretend it's the sequel and the apes have started wearing clothes. We know "Rise" is a prequel and Caesar was on his way to looking John Chambersish. So there you go.
KOBA: The Mego Urko figure (or is it Ursus?) always seemed out of place. What the hell IS it? But no more. It's the spitting image of Koba, but later on when he has a uniform.
http://yesterville.blogspot.com/2010/02/mego-8-planet-of-apes-general-urko.html"
http://planetoftheapes.wikia.com/wiki/Koba
The director indicated that Koba will probably be the villain of the sequel, so why wait? You've got a hero, you've got a villain! (makes sounds like punches flying) >DOOSH!< >DOOSH!<
And I'm sure many of you are still holding out hope that James Franco will return. When are you going to give up that pipe dream, Alan? Meanwhile, Hot Toys has the figure for you. He's just a little big because he's been taking some of those lab drugs. And he needs new clothes, but who doesn't want to undress James Franco?
http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_112311a.htm
And there you have it. Caesar, Koba and Will. The "Rise of the POTA" starter kit.
Don't everyone thank me at once!
While we're at it, here's a video review of Hot Toys' POTA gorillas:

David Warner is actually most famous for a little British film he did back in the mid-'60s called MORGAN!, where his character's favorite movie is KING KONG and he eventually gets "trapped" in a gorilla suit. If you've never seen it, I encourage you to seek it out.
Warner is also in the notorious STAR TREK V.

Whether or not that figure's inflated to include on-again, off-again production costs over the decades, Lake Powell is enchanting and hopefully a source of a possible Easter egg in the upcoming sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I visited Lake Powell 20 years ago this August and the boat tour guide treated me like I was an aberration for asking where the Apes scenes were filmed. I sure was glad that the Apes franchise was revived beginning a decade later. But an Easter egg in Rise for Lake Powell would be nice, since the Apes franchise hasn't returned there since 1968. Beneath didn't quite reach that area of the Forbidden Zone. I wonder how Lake Powell could be relevant to Rise's sequel though... <.html

Actually, Burton's debacle shot there, so APES has been there since '68.
From what I see, JOHN CARTER is bombing.

.htmlI'm not aware that POTA 2001 got any closer to Lake Powell than Beneath the Planet of the Apes did, did it? Granted, Wikipedia says filming began there:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_of_the_Apes_(2001_film)#Filming
But the only lake I saw in POTA2001 had plush vegetation. That didn't look like Lake Powell to me. The desert-like outskirts of Lake Powell may have been where the Oberon wound up, but I'm talking LAKE Powell here :-)
As for John Carter (of [Martian] Lake Powell) though, like our beloved Rise of the POTA, it's doing much better abroad than domestically:

At the rate it's going, it just might make its money back after Blu Ray and toys are sold. And I doubt it cost $250 million to make...as there's likely some voodoo-accounting going on to reflect prior negotiations and development (sort of like with Superman 2006).
At any rate, I want a Lake Powell Easter egg in Rise 2 :-) Might you? <.html

"Yeah. Me Tarzan, you Jane". - - - Taylor to
Nova, "Planet of the Apes"
This year marks the 100th anniversaries of both
"John Carter of Mars" and "Tarzan of the Apes", the one-two punch of writer
Edgar Rice Burroughs. "John Carter" debuted in the story "Under the
Moon of Mars" beginning in the February 1912 issue of "All-Story" magazine (the
same month Pierre Boulle was born) and ran until July. It was soon published as
the book "A Princess of Mars". Burroughs didn't invent science-fiction but it's
possible he first popularized the "space opera" genre and was a big influence on
"Star Wars", "Star Trek", "Avatar" and perhaps even POTA. Guys like Arthur
C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Carl Sagan and many others were inspired by "John
Carter". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm79MK6oGr0
http://movies.ign.com/articles/121/1219006p1.html"
Of course a big, expensive "John Carter" movie
just opened this weekend. I've seen it and it has it's moments of sci-fi fun but
gets bogged down in explaining it's world. It can't get out of it's own way.
That said, I enjoyed it on it's own terms and seeing a story brought to life
that so many other movies have borrowed from. And I got a kick out of their use
of Lake Powell as a location. Certain scenes will resonate with POTA fans, I
think. With a $250 million + budget (presumably some of that was eating
development costs from earlier attempts), confused marketing and well, some
problems as a film, it's looking like it could be a big bomb and put risky
sci-fi in the doghouse for a bit. But it did make an estimated $100 million
worldwide this weekend so there's hope. Pixar genius and "John Carter" fan
Andrew Stanton blew his wad getting this made and it's too bad it's not a better
flick.
After 100 years this is the first time it's
reached the screen, not that they haven't tried (Burroughs himself asked Douglas
Fairbanks to play John Carter in 1924). That's definitely not the case with
Burroughs' most famous character, Tarzan, who has had a long career in movies
and TV, starting in 1918 ("Tarzan of the Apes" debuted in the October 1912
"All-Story"; the publishers were so crazy about it they published the whole
story in that issue). And Warner Bros. reportedly has another
version up their sleeve ( http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/debbiedowner/news/?a=47856
). In it's own way, "Tarzan" seems like a proto-POTA. The apes have something of
a primitive civilization with their own language ("Tarzan" means "white skin" in
Apespeak) and rituals. It's kind of interesting that Pierre Boulle and Tarzan
were born the same year since POTA kinda takes "Tarzan" one step further.
Burroughs was interested in evolution and what the concept of "civilization"
means. And he certainly had a thing for apes, whether the armor-wearing gorillas
in his "Pellucidar" series or even the white apes in "John Carter".
Respect!

.htmlWell said!
What's particularly interesting to me at the moment is how John Carter made more than two thirds overseas ($70 million) this weekend what it did in the USA ($30 million):
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=johncarterofmars.htm
Rise similarly made 63% of its revenues overseas:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=riseoftheapes.htm
Typically movies make abroad what they make in the USA, and POTA2001 was no exception:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=planetoftheapes01.htm
Perhaps the USA's residents have gotten too soft, with their demonstrated inclination to leech off of future generations rather than try and make a better world for them?
http://www.USDebtClock.org
That phenomenon might help explain why worthwhile movies appeal to Americans comparatively less than before. Reality shows might be all the "reality" that most Americans can handle amidst their guilt.
As a sidenote, the movie The Help didn't even make 20% of its revenues abroad:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=help2011.htm
The same goes for Sandra Bullock's racially focused Blind Side:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=blindside.htm
The movie Precious didn't do much better, although it didn't do well abroad either and that might help explain its slight deviation from the abovementioned norm for that genre:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=preciouspush.htm
Perhaps this discrepancy is explained by how only in the USA can one be so thoroughly sued and held liable for not being sufficiently racially tolerant? Some might say that the explanation is in how people think they need a movie to help them understand certain issues better, and especially so that they can symbolically demonstrate their tolerance by their movie ticket purchases (either to co-workers, employers or juries).
Either way, isn't it ironic that a racially thought-provoking franchise like the Apes series has nevertheless lost ground domestically compared to overseas, while the lion's share of racially charged, pro-taxpayer subsidies movies like Precious earn the lion's share of their proceeds domestically?
Regards from Houston and have a great week, everyone :-)

Couple of character points are mentioned--Maurice is designed as being 30-40 years old, Buck's 'cracked and peeling skin ,suggesting years of mistreatment and malnutrition'.The care and thought that went into RISE certainly shines through.John, Scrolls.

This is what that "Flop or Not?" article says:
When wunderkind Tim Burton set his sights on remaking a sci-fi classic, fanboy hearts leapt. Then the film itself came out, and we could have predicted the results: great visuals, a few strong performances (notably Tim Roth's evil chimpanzee) but a storyline that made absolutely no sense.
Flop or Not? NOT. Not only was its $362 million worldwide box office well ahead of its production budget, but it made a solid $180 million domestically against a stated production budget of $100 million. That success convinced Fox to eventually bank on this summer's terrific Rise of the Planet of the Apes, bringing a happy ending to more than just the studio accountants.
I don't care what this person says, Burton's turd was a flop. Just because audiences were sucked by the studio campaign and it made money doesn't mean it wasn't a flop. It put the franchise on ice for a decade and if it wasn't for the work of others outside of Fox, APES would still be on ice.

Like Revolution several years ago, the comic's strength lies in that the writers are really POTA fans.

.htmlFor some reason the article only looks at the film from a box office perspective. But if you take into account the critical reaction, the fact that almost everyone who saw the film didn't like and the failure of the merchandising; the film was definately a flop.

.htmlThe advertising budget for Burton's Apes, allied with franchise affection, made it nearly flop-proof.John Carter is a casat iron, bona fide flop of catastrophic proportions and it makes me SO glad (and SO smug) that RISE was the hit it was, notwithstanding the lingering Burton stink.Had RISE flopped, where would we be?
