.htmlThe Apes seem to have more appeal globally than Star Trek. Star Trek has decayed into such politically correct themes, after all. The Apes movies aren't nearly as corny regarding those.
"Movies" like "Precious", "The Help" and "The Blind Side" didn't do particularly well overseas, either. But in the USA, where lawsuits are more prevalent regarding perceived slights and alleged discrimination, such movies provide sort of a social elixir to which some people flock for salvation.
I thought Rise did a wonderful job of portraying humanity's oppressiveness in a racially balanced way, didn't you? From the initial scenes in the jungle to the CEO's murdering spree from the helicopter, we saw how skin color isn't necessarily a predictor of oppressiveness.
I have recently lived for a few years in the USA's most ethnically diverse city (Houston, TX. where I presume that Colonel Taylor trained during his ANSA years). I have concluded after plenty of experiences that the "dark side" of humanity exists in more or less equal percentages of virtually all ethnic groups, age groups, socio economic groups and genders. As an attorney, I analytically strived hard to find predictors of bad behavior so that I could better avoid it. I concluded that the only predictor that works reliably is whether or not a person has a "good heart". A psychology grad. student recently told me that that has a lot to do with the relevant person's definition of "self-preservation" too.
Not long afterward, we had discussions in this group about George Taylor's willingness to destroy the planet (in Beneath). It was labeled as the ultimate manifestation of his misanthropy. Such talks really got me to thinking. I've become more distanced from others over time, after seeing so much darkness out there amidst my experiences as a litigator. Sometimes I feel that I can really relate to George Taylor's assessment of humanity. Plenty of folks can, which is part of why movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes do so well. But as Koba demonstrated, Apes aren't without their meaner members too... The sequel has the potential to be quite interesting as this nuance unfolds.

| Subject: bloody baboons can recognize words |
.htmlFrench scientists have shown that baboons can recognize four letter words (not those kinds of four letter words!) and distinguish them from random letters. That doesn't mean they can read but they can recognize the word as an object and perhaps it gives a clue to how we learn words as well. So perhaps one day if they see the words "rise" and "apes" it will signal the revolution. Also, check out how fast they pick out the words. As with sequencing numbers, they're faster than we are.

So perhaps one day if they see the words "rise" and "apes" it will signal the revolution. Also, check out how fast they pick out the words. As with sequencing numbers, they're faster than we are.

I think you will all enjoy this brief video about that topic and especially the bright futures that are potentially in store for us, thanks to technological trends:

Can you imagine how hard George "Skipper" Taylor would be laughing at that little-flag-in-the-desert of a video clip? LOL! :-)
A good weekend to all, and thanks John for the nice feedback earlier this week. FWIW, I'm a fiscally conservative white male who nevertheless reached those basically color-blind conclusions discussed below, of his own free will.

.htmlI feel the same way. I LOVED the original 3 Star Wars movies, especially the first. The prequels were temporarily fun, but their appeal has faded IMHO. The overall franchise has become commercialized at the expense of content, too. From the Ewoks to prequel fight scenes telegraphing the arrival of video games for folks to buy (cough cough), I am glad that the Star Wars franchise won't churn out more editions on the silver screen.
It is apparently the most lucrative SciFi franchise in history though. And nearly 1 in 5 voters nevertheless sided with POTA in the HuffPo poll. Not bad.

It won't start in time for a 2013 release. I'll bet they don't even have a finished script yet. <.html

Although THOR 2 will be excellent too, obviously. Now I need the rumour/leak mill on script and casting to begin for RISE 2 and I can float about like Mutley after getting a medal in 'Catch the Pigeon'.I love all the misleading speculation and hints--it's part of the journey.John, Scrolls.

Even in the movie, Lucius is not strong enough to brain
a gorilla permanently! Knocking him out just severely
stunned him long enough for taylor and Nova to get away.

.htmlActually, I always DID worry a bit about how they left Julius tied up in that 'crucifixion' pose, because crucifiction victims tended to die from suffocation due to that pose.Poor old Julius really does get the crap beaten out of him, doesn't he? Maybe it's that stinking cigar?
Anyway, research on Wikipedia confirms that, acknowledging a previously clandestine homosexual relationship that had developed in the close confines of the lab, Julius and Dr Galen absconded together and formed a society capaigning against the Right to Bare Arms.Who says you can't trust Wikipedia? Usually the studios, like Fox, have a lot of fish to fry, so when they hand off something to another company (Rhino, Time/Life) they put in the extra effort. The "Barney Miller" sets weren't selling, so Sony handed it off to Rhino, which did an incredible job, unearthing the rare pilot, interviewing the actors (though not Beneath's James Gregory or Gregory Sierra), etc. One of those companies might do a great job with the POTA TV show or "Return to the POTA" but now that POTA is hot again Fox will probably hold onto them. Too bad, as time is running out to talk to Harper, Naughton, Colman, et al.

I'd comment that "and she didn't even get a finger bitten off like we saw happen in Rise, either" but I don't want to make light of her personal tragedy.
Is there any documentation of a potential assertion that chimps are more dangerous, per capita, than humans? I've litigated in CT and I'm not aware that one can sue that state (or any others) for not "incarcerating" dangerous people. Indeed, California's been told by the U.S. Supreme Ct. to RELEASE prisoners because they were overcrowded and otherwise insufficient. It's expensive to incarcerate. A difference in this case is the alleged lack of a license for the chimp, I guess.
At least Caesar was incarcerated instead of being euthanised. <.html

I'm with you. Dr Zira is also my favourite character in PotA. The real hero of Apes, despite the arguments, now and then, that she is a little compromised (which just makes her more rounded as a character).

If 3D hangs on -- and I'm talking a decade or more here -- but if the industry keeps it alive for a long time, they may eventually get around to converting many classic films to 3D, but the costs and time involved will have to come way down. I think they spent 18 months and I don't know how much converting TITANIC to 3D. It's still just a gimmick though, so maybe it'll happen, but I wouldn't bet on it. <.html

$18 million was the figure I read. About 6 times more than what
studios usually spend on post-conversion 3D. It was worth it, too.
James Cameron ensured that it was done right for TITANIC. (No, the
movie didn't need to be made 3D, but since they were determined to
do it, I'm glad the studio listened to Cameron and ponied up enough
money to do it right.)

I can't see why this was announced if he's going to be tied up with RISE 2 for the next couple years, and I doubt Theron wants to wait for Wyatt either (She needs a new movie.), and I doubt very much that Fox wants to rush a sequel they have made such a priority. "Rise" was developed since 2006 but all they did was try other writers and go back to the original script. It's all up to the writers and according to them they have this figured out as a trilogy. So they have been thinking about this before anyone said, "OK, Rise 2". Time is no guarantee of quality.
For the record, "The Hollywood Reporter" sez this "Agent 13" that Wyatt is going to direct is based on a 1988 story. Sounds like "Indiana Jones".

Wow. Sir, you have all of this information? That's fantastic! I've mentioned here as to how I'm sure there's a scene in BENEATH that shows Ursus, Zaius, and the Grand Army standing on a pile of rubble near the Radio City Music Hall marquee and Ursus gave the order for Caspay, the Verger of the Cathedral, and Adiposo to be shot down as they were running for cover. In those records you mention, that's probably included too...do you have scans of it?
Anyway, thanks so much for the updates and the information. What you have is mind-boggling, to say the least!

Forget it, sir! "Rise 2" is next! next! next! It's possible the script the writers came up with sucks, but time is no guarantee of quality. They spent a decade to reach Burton's POTA2001. "Rise" was developed since 2006 but all they did was try other writers and go back to the original script. It's all up to the writers and according to them they have this figured out as a trilogy. So they have been thinking about this before anyone said, "OK, Rise 2". Time is no guarantee of quality.
I doubt they have even a finalized treatment much less anything near a shooting script yet. It'll be months yet before pre-production is announced and months after that that shooting starts, plus this movie will have more SFX than the first, so post-production will take longer. Fox is probably going to budget this movie at somewhere around $160 Million, so they're going to try hard to do it right.
Get this all done and in theatres by summer 2013?!!!!! Forget it, sir! Just say "NOOOOOO!" to a rush job on RISE 2.
P.S.
Read between the lines the things you read in the trades.

.htmlTravel back with me through the mists of time, children, to an age when Bill Blake and Paula Crist WERE the POTA (so said Marvel's POTA magazine). For many decades "Salvation on the POTA" had no sound. Recently, in 2012, the sound was found. 2012, that's only 3 years ago! No, wait, that's THIS year! So, let's go back through the mists of time, children.
