Start spreadin' the news,
Caesar's leavin' today
I want to be a part of it,
"Rise 2", "Rise 2"
These Tim Burton blues,
are melting away,
Fox will cut to the chase of it,
"Rise 2", "Rise 2"
I wanna wake up
to a POTA franchise that doesn't sleep
And find we're king of the hill,
Ha! Top of the heap
A $ 1 billion box office?
If "Apes" can make it there
It'll make it anywhere,
It's up to you,

.htmlWhats the rush. Let Wyatt get that other film out of the way and then consentrate on Apes sequel. This Apes film will be the most important of the bunch. We had lift off with Rise but now the Apes have to travel a long way with story, effects and a setup for the last(?) apes film. Let them wait and have a 2014 date. Even Star Wars(Yeeech) had a three year break before Empire. This sequel will have a virus, a possible war of some kind, apes going ape, apes going human and if they want continuity with the originals a trek across the USA. Its not the old days. John M.

.htmlImportant movies like "Transformers", "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games" sequels come out every two years or less. Did I say "Harry Potter"? Yes I did! Back in the "Star Wars" days it was every three years but now two years is the new three years.
And how much merchandise can Fox shovel while the apes aren't even wearing clothes? Fox needs to establish the franchise with apes wearing clothes and carrying guns so they can produce action figures. We think Fox has all the time in the world. How much time has Fox got?! Somebody has to begin to care.

Remember on the ad campaign for CONQUEST, Fox touted it as "The Newest and Biggest Yet!" Well, it was the newest, but hardly the biggest. But now, this is going to be something that will be the reality -- this sequel will be the biggest POTA movie of them all. There's no need to rush it. I see a very big production with a longer post-production SFX schedule than RISE had.
I also think that if this movie were going to be on Fox's summer 2013 schedule, we've had already heard of it.

You mean the first DVD release, the non-anamorphic ones from 2000.
I gave mine away to the local library -- and they were happy to get them! I was just spreading the virus.

.htmlOut of curiosity, are primates hunted for their edible meat value too? I haven't seen Sigourney Weaver's hit movie Gorillas in the Mist since 1988... But I wouldn't put it past some poachers to pursue our primate cousins for their edible value. So it might interest you to know you can get FREE e-mail subscriptions to monthly updates from:
http://www.new-harvest.org
Artificially-produced meat is making progress and the folks at that nonprofit group are keeping the rest of us informed about advances, as well as opportunities (for example) to get the media more interested.
Artificial meat has applications for space exploration and colonization, too. That's good to know since we haven't developed the suspended animation technology seen on the Icarus which launched during the 1970's. If our bodies truly have evolved to need meat (as opposed to meat substitutes such as tofu), then long term exploration will seemingly require this technology to continue progressing. Please feel free to subscribe and to share the opportunity with friends if you like. I have no ties to them and they're not-for-profit. If apes are hunted for edible meat value, though, and there are already so few left as it is, we can lessen the demand by satisfying it artificially. <.html

Yup. I was going to trade it in to Amazon for a gift card ($13,

that in the forums ON Amazon.com, I figured I'd best try something
else.

CinemaCon, the big soiree for NATO (the
National Association of Theater Owners), is happening in Vegas. Arthur Jacobs
created special reels of footage for "Planet" and "Beneath" for them back in the
day (which had footage not seen in the films: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLEGGCF4UPs ),
and last year CinemaCon gave us our first look at Rise's CG Caesar. This year
came the announcement that Fox is the first studio to end distribution of 35 mm
prints within the next two years in favor of digital. The end of an era and I
guess your last chance to see POTA in 35 if you can find it.
CinemaCon also provided a look at the future by
showing 10 minutes of "The Hobbit" in it's 48 frames per second glory instead of
the traditional 24. It will be the first film released that way. The reaction
was mixed, with some feeling it looks fantastic and others that it looks too
good (I guess), too clear. Perhaps like the debate over HD vs. those who like
film grain. But it sounds like "Hobbit" will have a similar visual impact at the
end of the year to what "Avatar" had with 3D. Maybe a future POTA
movie will be shot in 48. Many of the "Hobbit" folks did "Rise of the
POTA".

.htmlAs you know, nothing can beat an early 60s spectacular film in the many fantastic formats on a properly equiped theater. Most of todays folks will never know---or care. 48fps can help in the theater(Judder) though 24fps has no illeffects on bluray since the picture is downsized and hense sharper and more dense anyway the average Joe six-pack doesnt know the difference. Films seem to be made with home theater definatly in mind and thats why we are where we are at. It easaier and inevitable digital age technology and can save costs, even though films seem to cost more than ever.
Funny how high end Audio has a resurgence in analog and 1950 technology with todays benefits (Turntables and Tube amps and sources) and will film ever find a backwood love affair with old tech-never, its a young person medium while Audio is a more mature cliche with more money to spend. I only bring up Audio cause at one time they, films and home audio, went hand in hand. Klipse "Sound of the Theater" home speakers to Cerwin Vega "Senssouround" with advertising touting the theater pedigree of their Home Products. A bygone Era for sure, John M.

.htmlTheir is something "Alive" about Dirty Harry and Conquest and any film that Bruce Surtees photographed. I was drawn to certain films as a young child and teenager and inevietably they were all filmed by Bruce or scored by Jerry Goldsmith.
The Apes films are great because even with horrible budgets the best of the best in hollywood worked on them. Jacobs should be credited with that above all things "Apes". Ill repeat what I had said a few times here before,"Their was nothing like seeing Conquest on opining day at the Embassy theater 46th st. in NYNY that sunny day in 1972". The sound and picture were phenominal and thats why I continue the good fight for better elements and better mixing of them. Take care, John M.

.htmlAccording to comingsoon.net, at today's CinemaCon presentation "Rise 2" was announced with a group of movies Fox hopes to shoot this summer ("The Wolverine", Spielberg's "Robopocalypse") suggesting a 2013 release date ("X-Men: First Class 2" will reportedly shoot in January and that didn't rate a mention). If that's the case, expect an imminent announcement.

So, I'm now a convert.RISE 2, done this good, could be an astonishing 3D experience.Just imagine seeing Buck leaping at the helicopter in 3D.I've hated 3D up to now but I am totally, totally won over by it now.

"The sequel was mentioned as part of a list of movies Fox plans to start production on by summer's end, which included The Wolverine, Steven Spielberg's Robopocalypse and Shawn Levy's comedy The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Since the first two of those are already set for summer 2013 release dates, is there a chance that 20th Century Fox might be pushing for a Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel to be a third? Or maybe they'll save that one for the fall or holiday slate, which is still fairly open.
As far as we know, they still haven't confirmed that director Rupert Wyatt would be returning and we assumed that Andy Serkis may be busy doing second unit on Peter Jackson's two-part The Hobbit, although he has already signed for the sequel, so could they both make time this fall to start shooting this sequel?"
OK, so I've read the same thing as everyone else, but this is what I conclude....
An APES sequel isn't likely to begin filming until at best the fall -- BUT WHO KNOWS?
Andy Serkis is very busy. His availability is an unknown at this time. It could push shooting to the winter of 2013/14, but again -- WHO KNOWS?
A summer 2013 release date for a RISE sequel seems unlikely -- BUT WHO KNOWS? A fall 2013 release more likely -- BUT WHO KNOWS?
So, what do we know?
Answer: NOTHING!

worked out. So fans will have to do their own thing for the 50th anniversary of

I'll have to admit it: I finally was able to see RISE, and although it had its moments, I was disappointed in it:
There was no mention of Armando, Zira, or Cornelius from the previous films.
Yet, certain elements from the earlier films had been raised, such as this Caesar's mother being named "Bright Eyes"...there was a character named "Dodge Landon"...and he also shouted Taylor's line, "Get your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape...! I understand that Dodge Landon was supposed to be the son of the original Landon from the 1968 classic.
I was hoping that this new movie would've tied in more with the originals...maybe this one should be included in one of those "alternate" timelines or universes that both Dr. Hasslein and Virgil spoke of.

Movie lobbys were filled to the brim with posters, photos, Lobby cards and standees that it was a dream for a collector like myself to hunt them down and aquire what you could. And, yeah, no more characters from the original series or even the Boulle novel in the new APES movies. Probably why Boulle got no credit. But, so what? These are "new" movies.

This is the way it is in our culture -- nothing lasts very long anymore. Everything has to make way for the "New."
Nearly everything in American culture is sooner or later -- and it's more often sooner -- "Gone With The Wind."
It stinks.

living with this story since 2006; I would've thought they'd have some ideas

.html "Rise" has nothing to do with the continuity of "Conquest". It might have something to do with the original.
Dodge Landon (Tom Felton) is the son of (Hank?) Landon, played by Brian Cox. I guess the original Landon might be in the "Icarus" that took off in "Rise". This is probably the kind of stuff the writers are currently hashing out with Fox. They're still working out the framework for the "trilogy".

Speak for yourself! I'm not looking forward to a bunch of sequels to comic book hero movies. In fact, I really don't care for the summer movies the studios give us every year and haven't for many, many years. It's really all kind of brain dead, these summer "tent pole" movies. The studios are really just pandering to juvenile tastes, and as an aging adult, it's for me very depressing.
But anyway.... Now we have plenty of time to put out the positive waves in regard to the script they're working on for RISE 2. I'm not at all surprised that it's taking time, and I strongly suspect that the Jaffa's simply aren't up to the job. Expect the next bit of news on this production to be that another writer(s) has been brought in. But don't worry, be happy -- it's a good thing.

For years the only "ape pictures" I had were those Topps bubble-gum cards and those in the soundtrack album, but that was OK.
Imagine you're a kid again, back when you were a kid, and you're in your old bedroom and suddenly there appears a 50" plasma, a blu-ray player, and the APES movies on disc. Wouldn't that have been better than winning the lottery now? I'd have been in heaven -- and would never leave my room!

Yes! I thought it was funny to see LPs back in stores,
but now with the Home Theaters with tube preamps
analog is finally getting the respect it deserved all
along. Don't get me wrong. Non-linier editing is
great! But I still keep a couple of multi-track
tape machines working, so I can get that
luscious analog saturation in the mix.

I was kidding. If I hear one more Marvel Comics
movie announced, I'll puke. Except "Ant Man", that sounds like it could be
interesting. With all the CG movies that have come out, I don't think they've
used it for a shrinking movie, especially one with bugs.
As the Jaffas said in the Q & A they got
fired 3 times on "Rise". Fox spent time going to other writers and wound up
returning to their script. I don't think Fox will find more writers as
enthusiastic than them because it's their baby. But they seem a little
too work man-like ("we need to be here by page 27") that gets in the way of them
being great writers.

They can
spend 10 years on a script and wind up with nothing (POTA2001) or come out
fighting and produce something good "write" away ("Godfather 2" came out 2
years after "Godfather"). The writers have been living with this story since
2006; I would've thought they'd have some ideas about how to proceed by now.
Whether Fox has a good script and is just playing it safe (like chopping
"Rise" to pieces) remains to be seen. But it is what it is. At least we have
"Iron Man" and "Thor" and "Wolverine" to look forward to in 2013. :
)
Speak for yourself! I'm not looking forward to a bunch of sequels
to comic book hero movies. In fact, I really don't care for the summer
movies the studios give us every year and haven't for many, many
years. It's really all kind of brain dead, these summer "tent pole"
movies. The studios are really just pandering to juvenile tastes, and as
an aging adult, it's for me very depressing.
But anyway.... Now we have plenty of time to put out the positive waves in
regard to the script they're working on for RISE 2. I'm not at all
surprised that it's taking time, and I strongly suspect that the Jaffa's simply
aren't up to the job. Expect the next bit of news on this production to be
that another writer(s) has been brought in. But don't worry, be happy --
it's a good thing.

From the middle story below, here's the confirmation of what I've been trying to point out to Jeff Krueger.... THE SCRIPT IS THE THING. This is why I knew it would be 2014 before we get the sequel.
Part of that storytelling decision will also have to take into account a third film, because as Rothman reaffirmed, Fox is planning "Apes" as a trilogy. And he'll accept nothing less than scripts that are even better than the original's. "The script for that 'Apes' film was fantastic," Rothman explained. "We had the script for 10 years, and I always knew it was one of the best scripts. I just didn't think it was possible to do it. I thought it couldn't be done. ... We've got to have a great script. Because now, having made that good a movie, we better make the next one better."
Better and BIGGER.... that's what's coming from Fox -- at least that's what they want to do. Let's hope they succeed.

The felt on the bottom is missing and is stamped as "C-5" and "C-4A". He has a green jacket which is different than other pics I could find.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

What year? The movie was released on August 5th. It took it like two and a half months to make its final gross total. A couple more months of back slapping, then we get "hints" that Fox wants a sequel. Probably only started story conferences a couple months ago, if not sooner. I think the first thing that gets decided in something like this is the suits at the top figuring on what budget range the thing will be.

The POTA2001 debacle was doomed from the start because the concept they decided upon very early, a reinvention of the original movie, was so terribly ill-conceived. That misguided thought stuck all the way through the development hell and the result stalled the franchise for a decade.
They're being careful this time. They've also got to plot out the third one while they're at it, so it's going to take time, but there's plenty of time, now.

You seem to assume that everyone involved has nothing else to do but write POTA sequels. These are busy people. I seem to recall the Jaffas saying they had other projects and were trying to pitch a TV series to one of the networks.
I'd bet that in the nine months since RISE's releases, they haven't spent much more than two months on the sequel ideas.
I don't believe that when a studio executive makes an unofficial announcement that a certain production development is a top priority it means that everything else is on hold and everyone is just working on that one thing.

They are writing their asses off, as they
said. The sequel is a "priority" for the studio and if they had a script they
probably would've went for 2013. Rupert Wyatt is locked up from doing other
movies. They all want to get this done. So something is off in the idea
department or there isn't a meeting of the minds between the creators and the
studio. There is a lot of pressure on this project and that can sometimes cause
people to overthink it.

I don't believe that when a studio executive makes an unofficial
announcement that a certain production development is a top priority it
means that everything else is on hold and everyone is just working on that one
thing.

They are writing their asses off, as they said. The sequel is a "priority" for the studio and if they had a script they probably would've went for 2013. Rupert Wyatt is locked up from doing other movies. They all want to get this done. So something is off in the idea department or there isn't a meeting of the minds between the creators and the studio. There is a lot of pressure on this project and that can sometimes cause people to overthink it.
You see things too simplistically. These are all top professionals in the business now. Wyatt is probably fending off offers left and right, and yet he's still announced for another project. There's lots of stuff that goes on we never hear about. Fox has many things on its plate right now, and I doubt the APES sequel is the number one "priority."

For some reason, I can't get the great Irish Eurovision Son Contest winning 'What's Another Year?'by Johnny Logan out of my head.
Anyway, do things like lobby cards and Japanese programme booklets still get made in these ever so advanced but ever so dull modern times? If so, were there any for RISE? Why was stuff better years ago? John, Scrolls.

Simple Simon sez: Hollywood sees
things simplistically. Fox wanted to shoot "X-Men: First Class 2" this year but
is waiting until January to give Jennifer Lawrence time to film "Hunger Games 2"
(even though contractually Fox has the right to pull rank). And "Rise" made lots
more dough than "First Class".
Wyatt had to turn down "Londongrad", a movie he
really wanted to do because he's tied to "Rise 2", to be made as soon as
possible. He can announce all the projects he wants. The only thing that's
stopping "Rise 2" is the script. Fox is on this thing like flies on stink.

Paul Dehn, where are you now,a franchise turns its weary eyes to you!ANY delay leaves doubts--changes in executives, funding structures, the suprise new thing.Let's get RISE 2 done.If there only has to be two years between Amazing Spidey 1 + 2 (which is slated for 2014 already) why on earth (because that's where we were, all along)does it take three years for RISE 2,when the thrust of the story is pre-set by RISE 1? I can't see that it takes years to write a script---decide on your direction and write the damn thing!
You have to understand how movies are made today. The studios are merely shadows of what they once were. There are no moguls anymore that can order things done and done now. Everyone is a free agent and RISE had several producers, including the writers themselves. There's only bosses and no one can order anyone to do anything on a certain deadline. It's filmmaking by committee, and it's one of the big reasons why great films are so rare these days. Fox may have people contractually committed to this or that, but contracts are made to be broken. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with how the sequel is developing, I'm just saying that these things move at their own pace, and fans can only look at it from the outside. People could get fired, other people brought in, the summer 2014 release window moved up. Who knows? There's nothing to do but just go with the flow and hope for the best. If it
drives you crazy, maybe you need to find something to do with yourself until the summer of 2014. <.html

Actually, I'm not sure. Yes, it may be a "new" movie, still, if you're going to use the Planet Of The Apes name, I feel it should still incorporate some of the earlier characters and all to make it a complete series. As I've said, RISE did do as such from the first APES film.

So, I guess we can count on you seeing 2014's RISE sequel -- in 2015?
And, yeah, no more characters from the original series or even the Boulle novel in the new APES movies. Probably why Boulle got no credit. But, so what? These are "new" movies.

"Rise" has nothing to do with the continuity of "Conquest".
