The crossover script is staring us in the face already.Jackie Earle Haley's Kraik from 'The Legacy', for reasons we can't explain, gets zapped back to 1972 where,as Willie Loomis,Jackie plays a seventy type to Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows'.Loomis then gets turned into a vampire and then, again for reasons we can't explain, wakes up in a coffin in 3080-ish and, having gotten a taste for domestic work, becomes a servant in the home of Galen's parents (as confirmed by Rich Handley's indispensible LEXICON of the POTA).Then, whilst Loomis is on the roof watching for Urko, a knock comes on the door and when Yalu answers it, Tim Burton leaps in,shouting 'Circular timeline anybody?!'.

Elfman's score in Burton's Apes is,frankly, wonderful---let down a bit by the actual movie.I recall at the time reading that the studio wanted something sounding 'more heroic' at one stage, whatever that meant.The triple cd release recently is a strangely uninvolving listen--it's a bit 'bitty' and takes some effort to sit through (I haven't managed it fully yet).I also love his Spider-Man.But then I just love Spider-Man.John, Scrolls.

I recently wrote to SFX Magazine, tearing them a new one for their lack of respect for the Apes franchise--amongst other gripes,I pointed out that their reviews for RISE were consistently lower in star rating than other mags such as Sci Fi Now, Empire, Total Film etc, which is pathetic for an alleged sci fi mag.I,personally,think that unless a movie has a good premiere party (RISE had no UK premiere) then the jounos give it a star or two less.Anyway, set me to thinking---if the original POTA came out today, what kind of reviews would it get--would it be a 'three star overblown nonsense but visually striking', a 'two star Heston over-acts' hatchet job, or a 'five star--groundbreaking and thought provoking cinmema' review? I think my big beef with SFX Mag is that it is MEANT to be a magazine celebrating and, maybe, supporting sci fi, but it consistently gives poorer reviews for films like RISE than other, mainstream movie, mags do.I think early reviews, especially as they go up on the Net, really matter, because they really help fuel word of mouth.So a sci fi mag should be batting for the team, not just kissing the ass of Doctor Who or whatever movie has Harrison Ford at the premiere.I think SFX would give the original APES a very snotty 3 out of 5 today.The new Batman will get five, guaranteed, no matter how crap it is, because it's the emperor's new clothes of cinema.John, Scrolls.

I recall seeing an interview of Charlton Heston online during which he said he helped lobby Hollywood to make Planet of the Apes. Might anyone have any insights as to how this came about? Might Arthur P. Jacobs have come to him first? Or vice versa? Maybe Rod Serling or Michael Wilson were involved? Or might Charlton Heston have read Pierre Boulle's Monkey Planet and decided "hey what if..."? That Northwestern University alumnus was a clever fellow...

I recall seeing that during the early 1960's, Charlton Heston was a civil rights activist in Washington D.C. Perhaps someone noticed this and figured POTA was prime terrain for him to promulgate his message. Or maybe the sci-fi genre's usefulness occurred to him spontaneously?

I recall during a film festival discussion at U.Va. in 1991 when a professor said "Charlton Heston liked getting dragged around in the sand, kicked and mistreated". That is consistent with Mr. Heston's experiences in Ben Hur, the 10 Commandments and such as well as Planet of the Apes.

But a significant change of pace and style emerged when Mr. Heston switched genres from classical to sci-fi. I didn't get the chance to ask him why he made that transition when we met at the film festival (after I paid $125 for the ticket) but perhaps someone here can please offer me insights. Otherwise I really will feel like that part of my life is empty, among those life regrets that I otherwise can't extinguish.

Why didn't I get to ask him on the day we met? He looked right at me from the stage when I raised my hand as the post-meet & greet event was about to conclude. He was about to fly to Washington D.C. for a lobbying endeavor (film-related, not NRA rated from what I could ascertain) but seemed about to call on me to ask my question, too. Unfortunately, though, the person right beside me started to yawn (!) and Mr. Heston noticed that, took his cue and waved goodbye to the crowd. He promptly departed and I had mixed emotions about what had just happened. Perhaps not altogether coincidentally, the following month is the last that I ever allowed that yawner next to me to speak to me. But that was small consolation for my inability to ask Mr. Heston the abovementioned question(s). Any thoughts?

I have seen Omega Man a few times, but not Soylent Green (because I want to have the time to enjoy it when I finally do). I don't recall if he did other sci-fi movies too, other than of course Beneath the POTA. Grey Lady Down seemed like The Final Countdown but I'm not aware that the former's sci-fi like the latter.

I do recall hearing that after Mr. Heston helped make sci-fi more mainstream, George Lucas was asked by 20th Century Fox to somehow tie Star Wars into POTA. Mr. Lucas declined though. It's not clear to me how the simians could have efficiently fit into the Star Wars saga, unless maybe as cantina bar occupants, sandpeople, jawa replacements or maybe even Darth Vader's storm troopers. It seems best that Mr. Lucas didn't dilute either franchise with the mixture that had been requested of him.

I bought the novel by Pierre Boulle immediately after, and ever since I've been addicted to anything Apes. (I can't say I'm a fan of the 2001 "reimagining" though...)

Issue#9 of Marvel's Apes mag has an article called 'On Location:Conquest of the POTA'.On p42, there's a pic of extras sharing a banana with a 'stuffed chimp, brought to the set by one of the younger onlookers'.Last night I noticed that in the early library scene, where the orang fetches the wrong book, there's a stuffed chimp in the window of the shop, staring out at the worldwith his back to us--it LOOKS like the same chimp! I was thinking about fan based anniversary projects for next year and I wonder if we could do a real job on the unfilmed TV Series script, 'Hostage'? It's a great story and, with a few tweaks (delete the Virdon kissing scene because he's never do that to Sally!!) and altering Ursus to Urko, etc, it would make a fantastic audio, a la the tremendous 'VALUES' disc a few years back.We've now got the TV Series music officially released, so, maybe, Bill Hollweg, if you're interested, it could be fun? Does anybody pay attention to those reviews,though ? I sure don't.
If i wanted to see a film i'd go see it (or buy the dvd cos i don't go to the cinema) whether it's had bad reviews or not.

Unfortunately, not all of them. I've only recently gotten into the PotA fandom. Beneath is the only sequel I've seen. But I plan on watching the rest as soon as possible.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that a new writer has been enlisted on the "Rise of the POTA" sequel. It's Scott Burns. Who? Don't play dumb! He wrote "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "The Informant!" but interestingly he also wrote "Contagion" about a virus taking out humanity.
"Rise" itself had a revolving door of writers before going back to the original writers, who have also worked on "Rise 2".

My fave is the original.
Fave of the sequels is "Beneath." It was the very first "apes" film i saw.

My instinctive reaction to this was worry.When the game of musical chairs starts with writers, things can start unravelling.If we hear of any more changes after this, I'll start to panic.Definitely looking like 2014 at the earliest now, huh? John, Scrolls.
