.htmlArgue, dammit---been ages since a good firefight in here! While they're arsing about with a script that seems destined for development hell now, maybe they could do a novelisation of RISE, do some more merchandise and do a stunning 50 years box set with mountains of extras. The lack of goodies makes 2014 seem a long time off.I waited my adult life for a good Apes movie, I'm sick of being patient now we've finally got one.John, Scrolls.

Everyone is a free agent and RISE had several producers, including the writers themselves. There's only bosses and no one can order anyone to do anything on a certain deadline. It's filmmaking by committee, and it's one of the big reasons why great films are so rare these days. Fox may have people contractually committed to this or that, but contracts are made to be broken. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with how the sequel is developing, I'm just saying that these things move at their own pace, and fans can only look at it from the outside. People could get fired, other people brought in, the summer 2014 release window moved up. Who knows? There's nothing to do but just go with the flow and hope for the best. If it drives you crazy, maybe you need to find
something to do with yourself until the summer of 2014.

Heads up! There's going to be a Danny
Elfman Q & A at Warner Bros. in Burbank on May 8. Those in that neck of the
woods can RSVP; it will also be streamed on the internet and people can ask
questions. Obviously it's a promo for his 14th collaboration with Tim Burton
(they did POTA!) called "Dark Shadows" and featuring Jackie Earle "Kraik"
Hailey. It opens next week.

Besides, most still watch DVDs on a TV via a player. Blu-rays or DVDs arn't going anywhere very soon. If anything, movies might soon be available on flash drives which would bring down the cost of mass production and still allow the studios to make a bundle.
Downloads will be counter productive as an only source for studios to recover their money. Charging $20 bucks for an actual object a consumer can hold and own is one thing, but quite another for a virutual download. If you remember

"The Avengers" has exploded box office records: the biggest domestic opening weekend ever ($200 million) and around $640 million worldwide in 10 days. You can be sure Hollywood will dissect it's success to take the temperature of the moviegoing public. With Fox figuring out where to go with their POTA franchise, could they maybe lay the groundwork for a huge team up movie down the road? Maybe we'll finally get that "Ape Nation" movie we've wanted for so long. Or perhaps POTA can join forces with Fox's other big franchises? "Alien vs. Predator" was thinking small. Audiences want to see "Alien", "Predator", "Die Hard", "X-Men" and POTA team up against a common foe. Or this! The different versions of POTA could team up. Cornelius and Zira from POTA68 (recast of course), Attar and Limbo from POTA2001 and Caesar and Koba from "Rise" all get together to stop, I
don't know, we'll figure that out later. We must change with the times.

Like I said, movies today are much more by committee than they used to be. I'm pretty sure that scripts like this are written in little pieces and are then story conferenced to death. The studio wants to control the direction of everything, so they won't allow a writer to just go off for two months and come back with a 120 page script. No, I'll bet it's more like write twenty pages and let us see where you're going and if that's OK then you get to write the next twenty pages. <.html

.htmlSuperfriends was a television cartoon during the 1970's which teamed up numerous superheroes and, like comic books, helped pave the way for the Avengers.
While I'm very reluctant to risk the POTA franchise's ability to be taken seriously by mixing it with other franchises, it might be worth mentioning that I was told that Fox asked George Lucas during the 1970's if he could somehow tie the Star Wars movie he was creating into what had been one of the most successful sci-fi franchises of all time: POTA. George Lucas declined. But I wonder how that franchise could have been brought into Star Wars? Perhaps simians could have fit in acceptably in the cantina scene. Maybe they could have been substituted for the sandpeople / Tusken Raiders, or the Jawas...but that might have deteriorated the POTA franchise's appeal. Any thoughts?

I liked "Green Lantern" though, call me the minority. "Apes must go like "Conquest '72" uncut and get down and dirty as to seperate it from all the sparkly muck thats out their. That sparkly muck still makes big bucks though, WoW...Keep the Apes in their own universe and as long as it makes profit (they will never make billion dollar numbers so forget that) dont fudge with the mythology or dumb it down to a costume drama because its not a costume drama!...John M.

The spoilsport in me wants to say nobody (if that silliness happened, I'd love to see any Apes fan who despised the Burton film seriously look me in the eye and say that some "Avengers" Apes film idea is a good thing). However, I'll take the bait and play nicely. ;)
Umm... how about a Quantum Leap episode? Dr Sam Beckett finishes an episode and the teaser for the next instalment is him as an ape slave driver or some other ape in some ethical predicament. Oh, boy!

I went to the Danny Elfman Q & A (5/8/12).
I'll just say I'm an Elfman fan and have been for a long time. What's relevant
here is he did the score for Burton's POTA2001. Say what you will about the
film, but I loved Danny's music and still do. And while I'm at it, I'm also a
Tim Burton fan. So in that sense maybe I was more disappointed in POTA2001 than
the average POTA fan. Or maybe not. I consider it a disappointment but
there is much I can enjoy (the look, Danny's music, etc.). Anyway, I don't
know if folks can separate the movie from Danny's music but I think Danny did
music that could be a highlight of POTAdom.
Anyway, I have several Elfman CDs; Oingo
Boingo, 2 compilation CDs of "Music For Darkened Theater", "Big Fish", POTA2001,
"Nightmare Before Christmas" (besides doing the music, Danny was the singing
voice of Jack Skelington). After the evening I enjoyed revisiting
those.
So, there wasn't anything POTA in this Q & A
except someone asked him about the La La Land Records reissues (including the
recent POTA2001 3-CD set) and he said he has nothing to do with those and is
just as surprised as we are what they put out (one might assume the composer has
a role in those). Other things that stick out are that he considers "Mars
Attacks" his easiest score and "Big Fish" (what I consider the best Burton film
in the last 18 years or so) his hardest. He also talks about writing "The
Simpsons" theme in his car and so much more. Elfman fans and film score fans
might enjoy this. I don't know how long it will stay up but good times. There
was many more people than they planned for and they gave out "Dark Shadows"
posters that everyone wanted signed so Danny had to get the hell out of there,
but he did try to sign what he could. He signed my Eric Greene book and I can
say he's a good guy who appreciates his fans. Also, the guy asking the questions
is Jeff Bond, who has done his share of liner notes for great POTA CDs. From
what I understand, he's doing a book about Elfman.

My god--this script just writes itself!!!! John, Scrolls.

Cornelius and Zira from POTA68 (recast of course), Attar and Limbo from POTA2001 and Caesar and Koba from "Rise" all get together to stop, I don't know, we'll
figure that out later. We must change with the times.

Generally, the reviews for the original movie were mixed with some, like those in The New York Times and TIME, down right scathing. But there were also reviews that rated the film excellent -- and quotes from those made it into the PLANET ads. In the fullness of time, though, the bad reviews are forgotten, and the simple fact that PLANET is a film that's still discussed today and down right beloved in so many places, that speaks volumes more now than even the best review from 1968 can. <.html

I'm a huge Planet of the Apes fan (even of the TV series, although I haven't seen much of it because I wasn't around when it aired and I haven't been able to watch many episodes online)so I was super excited when I found this forum. | Subject: How did Charlton Heston switch from classical to sci-fi and learn of |
|
.html Amigos:
I recall seeing an interview of Charlton Heston online during which he said he helped lobby Hollywood to make Planet of the Apes. Might anyone have any insights as to how this came about? Might Arthur P. Jacobs have come to him first? Or vice versa? Maybe Rod Serling or Michael Wilson were involved? Or might Charlton Heston have read Pierre Boulle's Monkey Planet and decided "hey what if..."? That Northwestern University alumnus was a clever fellow...
I recall seeing that during the early 1960's, Charlton Heston was a civil rights activist in Washington D.C. Perhaps someone noticed this and figured POTA was prime terrain for him to promulgate his message. Or maybe the sci-fi genre's usefulness occurred to him spontaneously?
I recall during a film festival discussion at U.Va. in 1991 when a professor said "Charlton Heston liked getting dragged around in the sand, kicked and mistreated". That is consistent with Mr. Heston's experiences in Ben Hur, the 10 Commandments and such as well as Planet of the Apes.
But a significant change of pace and style emerged when Mr. Heston switched genres from classical to sci-fi. I didn't get the chance to ask him why he made that transition when we met at the film festival (after I paid $125 for the ticket) but perhaps someone here can please offer me insights. Otherwise I really will feel like that part of my life is empty, among those life regrets that I otherwise can't extinguish.
Why didn't I get to ask him on the day we met? He looked right at me from the stage when I raised my hand as the post-meet & greet event was about to conclude. He was about to fly to Washington D.C. for a lobbying endeavor (film-related, not NRA rated from what I could ascertain) but seemed about to call on me to ask my question, too. Unfortunately, though, the person right beside me started to yawn (!) and Mr. Heston noticed that, took his cue and waved goodbye to the crowd. He promptly departed and I had mixed emotions about what had just happened. Perhaps not altogether coincidentally, the following month is the last that I ever allowed that yawner next to me to speak to me. But that was small consolation for my inability to ask Mr. Heston the abovementioned question(s). Any thoughts?
I have seen Omega Man a few times, but not Soylent Green (because I want to have the time to enjoy it when I finally do). I don't recall if he did other sci-fi movies too, other than of course Beneath the POTA. Grey Lady Down seemed like The Final Countdown but I'm not aware that the former's sci-fi like the latter.
I do recall hearing that after Mr. Heston helped make sci-fi more mainstream, George Lucas was asked by 20th Century Fox to somehow tie Star Wars into POTA. Mr. Lucas declined though. It's not clear to me how the simians could have efficiently fit into the Star Wars saga, unless maybe as cantina bar occupants, sandpeople, jawa replacements or maybe even Darth Vader's storm troopers. It seems best that Mr. Lucas didn't dilute either franchise with the mixture that had been requested of him.
Thanks from Houston for any insights that you might have about any of this... <.html

Say what you will about the film, but I loved Danny's music and still do. And while I'm at it, I'm also a Tim Burton fan. So in that sense maybe I was more disappointed in POTA2001 than the average POTA fan. Or maybe not. I consider it a disappointment but there is much I can enjoy (the look, Danny's music, etc.). Anyway, I don't know if folks can separate the movie from Danny's music but I think Danny did music that could be a highlight of POTAdom.
> > Anyway, I have several Elfman CDs; Oingo Boingo, 2 compilation CDs of "Music For Darkened Theater", "Big Fish", POTA2001, "Nightmare Before Christmas" (besides doing the music, Danny was the singing voice of Jack Skelington). After the evening I enjoyed revisiting those.

Other things that stick out are that he considers "Mars Attacks" his easiest score and "Big Fish" (what I consider the best Burton film in the last 18 years or so) his hardest. He also talks about writing "The Simpsons" theme in his car and so much more. Elfman fans and film score fans might enjoy this. I don't know how long it will stay up but good times. There was many more people than they planned for and they gave out "Dark Shadows" posters that everyone wanted signed so Danny had to get the hell out of there, but he did try to sign what he could. He signed my Eric Greene book and I can say he's a good guy who appreciates his
fans. Also, the guy asking the questions is Jeff Bond, who has done his share of liner notes for great POTA CDs. From what I understand, he's doing a book about Elfman.

It's a great story and, with a few tweaks (delete the Virdon kissing scene because he's never do that to Sally!!) and altering Ursus to Urko, etc, it would make a fantastic audio, a la the tremendous 'VALUES' disc a few years back. We've now got the TV Series music officially released, so, maybe, Bill Hollweg, if you're interested, it could be fun? Yeah, I do. Helps save me time and money.
You should read reviews from many critics -- after you've seen the movie yourself -- and find those who have opinions that agree most with yours. Then later you can read those same critics and see what they have to say about some movie you think you might want to see. If they're negative on it, most likely you will be too, and you then can safely skip it, but of course catch it later on video or whatever if you like. The point is that going to the movies costs money, so why not be smart about it? Would you buy a car without doing research on it?

So what elements of the original movie made you fall in love with it. Are there any similar movie that you've seen before that preconditioned you to fall head over heels for PLANET? Do you like Science fiction in general? Do you like actors wearing extensive prosthetic makeups? Was it the concept or the plot or the characters that most engaged you?
