For the most part, I thought CONTAGION was fairly bland, so I'm not too sure what this guy is going to bring to the project. He may only be the first of a host of writers that'll get a chance to crack at this thing. But be warned: the more writers there are means the producers aren't sure what they're doing. <.html

My instinctive reaction to this was worry. When the game of musical chairs starts with writers, things can start unravelling. If we hear of any more changes after this, I'll start to panic.Definitely looking like 2014 at the earliest now, huh? John, Scrolls.
Oh, I wouldn't worry. Fox smells $$$$$ so this is going to get made. They'll have a script everybody is happy with by the fall, and pre-production will be announced before the end of the year. Most likely this movie will begin filming this winter and be completed by March. The SFX people will have four or five more months to work on this than they had on the first one, as I believe this will be a much bigger SFX film.
I also think that the need for extra writers is also because they've got to plan the third one while they figure out the second.

.htmlI guess this means it's too soon to count James Franco out yet. Though he would probably be an expense they don't want. But maybe a couple of scenes like Heston did in "Beneath". And they can give it to a school or something (Franco goes to enough of them).

Thank you. I'm Ramona, and I'm from Michigan. I've been a fan since two years ago, when I saw the original movie and fell in love with it. I bought the novel by Pierre Boulle immediately after, and ever since I've been addicted to anything Apes. (I can't say I'm a fan of the 2001 "reimagining" though...)

The fan name Icarus for Heston's ship in POTA throws people for a loop since it is an odd name for what is hopefully a successful mission (Icarus flew too close to the sun). Prometheus seems an even odder name for a ship (Prometheus was punished by the gods for increasing Man's knowledge).

I hope PROMETHEUS is good, for Fox and everyone else, and I'd like to have a really good Sci-fi movie to look forward to, but I just don't have much faith in Ridley Scott. I'm sure it'll be a good looking movie, Scott is an excellent film stylist, but like Tim Burton, I think his sense of story isn't that profound. It's like the case of TOTAL RECALL... good looking movie, great Jerry Goldsmith score, but a silly story.

Jacobs had been peddling the project all over town
and getting nowhere. I believe Warner's had optioned
it originally and then shelved it. A lot of the time a good
property goes nowhere unless you can get a big name
actor to sign on to it, and Heston was his. He believed
in it and thought it was worth doing. Here's a quote . . .
November 3. THE PLANET OF THE APES project is
in limbo. Jacobs is
now thinking of sweating the budget down to two million,
which seems ridiculous. He also wants to go with a mechanic-drector
from television. This seems a mistake too. On the other hand. it'd be
very good for me if this one cam together. It's certainly a different
kind of script I'm talking about.
In a message dated 5/14/2012 8:29:19 P.M. Central Daylight Time,
georgetaylor68@... writes:
Amigos: I recall seeing an interview of Charlton Heston online during
which he said he helped lobby Hollywood to make Planet of the Apes. Might
anyone have any insights as to how this came about? Might Arthur P. Jacobs
have come to him first? Or vice versa? Maybe Rod Serling or Michael Wilson
were involved? Or might Charlton Heston have read Pierre Boulle's Monkey
Planet and decided "hey what if..."? That Northwestern University alumnus was
a clever fellow...
I recall seeing that during the early 1960's,
Charlton Heston was a civil rights activist in Washington D.C. Perhaps someone
noticed this and figured POTA was prime terrain for him to promulgate his
message. Or maybe the sci-fi genre's usefulness occurred to him spontaneously?
I recall during a film festival discussion at U.Va. in 1991 when a
professor said "Charlton Heston liked getting dragged around in the sand,
kicked and mistreated". That is consistent with Mr. Heston's experiences in
Ben Hur, the 10 Commandments and such as well as Planet of the Apes.
But a significant change of pace and style emerged when Mr. Heston
switched genres from classical to sci-fi. I didn't get the chance to ask him
why he made that transition when we met at the film festival (after I paid
$125 for the ticket) but perhaps someone here can please offer me insights.
Otherwise I really will feel like that part of my life is empty, among those
life regrets that I otherwise can't extinguish.
Why didn't I get to
ask him on the day we met? He looked right at me from the stage when I raised
my hand as the post-meet & greet event was about to conclude. He was about
to fly to Washington D.C. for a lobbying endeavor (film-related, not NRA rated
from what I could ascertain) but seemed about to call on me to ask my
question, too. Unfortunately, though, the person right beside me started to
yawn (!) and Mr. Heston noticed that, took his cue and waved goodbye to the
crowd. He promptly departed and I had mixed emotions about what had just
happened. Perhaps not altogether coincidentally, the following month is the
last that I ever allowed that yawner next to me to speak to me. But that was
small consolation for my inability to ask Mr. Heston the abovementioned
question(s). Any thoughts?
I have seen Omega Man a few times, but not
Soylent Green (because I want to have the time to enjoy it when I finally do).
I don't recall if he did other sci-fi movies too, other than of course Beneath
the POTA. Grey Lady Down seemed like The Final Countdown but I'm not aware
that the former's sci-fi like the latter.
I do recall hearing that
after Mr. Heston helped make sci-fi more mainstream, George Lucas was asked by
20th Century Fox to somehow tie Star Wars into POTA. Mr. Lucas declined
though. It's not clear to me how the simians could have efficiently fit into
the Star Wars saga, unless maybe as cantina bar occupants, sandpeople, jawa
replacements or maybe even Darth Vader's storm troopers. It seems best that
Mr. Lucas didn't dilute either franchise with the mixture that had been
requested of him.
Thanks from Houston for any insights that you might
have about any of this...

But as we recall, Rise showed the Icarus heading there, astonishingly enough.

It's like the case of TOTAL RECALL... good looking movie, great Jerry Goldsmith score, but a silly story.

I hadn't seen that before but I enjoyed much of it. Admittedly I didn't enjoy reading about how he ragged on Beneath the POTA so much. And as for Linda Hamilton, he didn't have anything but negativity to convey about her. Why might that have been? Perhaps her divorce from Zanuch rubbed him (and Zanuch) the wrong way? Or maybe Mr. Heston had a flame for her that didn't flourish as much as he might have liked?
I also noticed the less-than-flattering remark apparently about John Chambers, the make-up guy who later won an Oscar. Presumably he was with POTA from the very beginning and was the one Mr. Heston was saying could be better.
Meanwhile, I found it surprising that he said LBJ's withdrawal from the presidential race was a mistake. Mr. Heston was a Republican. Or perhaps he merely became one after that?

I'm glad that the word "bloody" is in Heston's lexicon.
It make "You Bloody Baboon!" seem more natural and
less of an expression put upon him by the writers.

I doubt Chambers was the one applying astronaut
beards on location. As I recall he was kept busy
back at the lab in Hollywood churning out appliances.
They had nearly every makeup artist in Hollywood working
on Apes that year. So many in fact a number of productions
were shut down due to a lack of qualified makeup men. And even
if they had Chambers in Arizona, he'd be doing apes and not beards.
Each of the apes had their own makeup artist, at least the
prinicples.
and the only apes shooting in Page were Hunter, McDowall &
Wagner.

That prodded me to speculate as to why Mr. Heston had nothing but unflattering observations to share about Nova / Linda Harrison. Either the divorce with Zanuch rubbed him the wrong way, or he was disappointed by her for some reason...or maybe she really was all looks and no acting talent. I'd be interested to know because I'd always assumed that they had gotten along so well.

I think they did get along well. I'm sure PLANET was a "happy set," as they say, but I think Heston was just giving an honest statement in his book that Harrison "couldn't act." She was not a very well-trained actor at this time. She was a former beauty queen that was where she was because of her looks and got the part of Nova because she was Zanuck's girlfriend. I'm not putting Linda Harrison down. She was a competent actress and did a brief TV series after PLANET, which unfortunately isn't yet on home video. Jeff Krueger knows what I'm talking about. But, she didn't have much of a career after that, partly because being an actress in movies isn't a normal life, and she had kids and other things become more important than doing movies. Let's give Chuck a break. He wasn't being mean. <.html

The "what coulda been" is that Heston almost starred in "Jaws" and Linda could've played his wife. But Spielberg wanted an everyman, not a movie star. Zanuck pushed for Linda as the wife but the role went to the studio exec's wife instead.

| Subject: Death of a father |
.html
My dad died last Sunday and his memorial is Saturday. I bring it up because of the POTA connections. My own POTA adventures meant he knew Natalie Trundy and Bill "stage Cornelius" Blake personally. One of my favorite POTA memories is when I took Natalie to a sci-fi convention because Charlton Heston was going to be there. It was just after POTA2001 was greenlit. Linda Harrison was there and one of her sons and we hung with Heston and then Natalie and Linda took me to lunch. Anyway, the next day was my dad's birthday (so I guess April 2000) and it didn't occur to me to say something, I guess Natalie did, and Linda signed one of her hotter pictures to my dad, saying, "You were fantastic last night!". Just a terrific idea for an autographed photo and he loved it. That was such a sweet gesture from Natalie and Linda and I will always be grateful. My dad never understood my love of POTA either as a kid or an adult and that's
something I was sad about but such are relationships.
Another thing that occurred to me lately is how the death of a father is significant in both the POTA movies that came out in the last almost 40 years. There's the scene between Thade and his father (played by Heston himself). Yeah, people groan about that scene (damn, they got Heston in ape makeup and that's the best they could come up with?) but I'm always moved by Thade's reaction to his dad's death. This scene is significant because Tim Burton's dad died during preproduction on POTA2001. Reportedly he was never close to his folks but there was something there because his next film was the ode to fatherhood "Big Fish". As it turns out, I love that movie and the song Eddie Vedder wrote for it, "Man of the Hour" and in fact I'm quoting it in the memorial card people will receive at my dad's service:
And the road the old man paved
The broken seams along the way
The rusted signs left just for me
He was guiding me
Love, his own way
Now the man of the hour
Is taking his final bow
As the curtain comes down
I feel this is just goodbye for now
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/05/10/dark-shadows-tim-burton-and-richard-d-zanuck-form-a-family/
And of course the death of a father plays a big part in "Rise of the POTA" (it could be considered the reason the POTA is born). My dad was struggling with his health when that came out and I felt it was a pretty interesting theme for the original POTA generation. They were kids when the original POTA movies came out and now many of them are dealing with the same thing Will is in the movie, aging parents.
So, here's to you dad, and to all the POTA fathers who are struggling. <.html

a father
My dad never understood my love of POTA either as a kid or an adult and that's something I was sad
about but such are relationships.

I would guess a lot of us on this group are at the age where we have started losing parents, one of the more unpleasant things of life. Seems to help to have people around who can send some good thougths your way. Love the Linda Harrison story, didn't know she had that sense of humor. Take care.

Take care my friend and remember as long as they are in our thoughts they still survive. Bye Bye, John M. <.html

My dad never understood my love of POTA either as a kid or an adult and that's something I was sad about but
such are relationships.
And the road the old man paved The broken seams along the way The rusted signs left just for me
He was guiding
me Love, his own way
Now the man of the hour Is taking his final bow As the curtain comes down I feel this is just goodbye for now
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/05/10/dark-shadows-tim-burton-and-richard-d-zanuck-form-a-family/

According to the writers, Fox head Tom Rothman suggested using the Golden Gate Bridge as an iconic landmark a la the Statue of Liberty and then the geography and ending fell into place.

.html 40 years ago yesterday (Saturday) was the Phoenix preview of "Conquest of the POTA", which resulted in a softening of the film. Of course, less violence and a more politically correct Caesar. It also resulted in Lisa being the first ape to say "No". Director J. Lee Thompson said in "POTA Revisited" that some were also complaining at the preview that people were being cruel to animals in the film. Would the original version have changed POTA's rep all these years? Dunno, but I'm glad the 2008 version restored it. <.html

That Loew's State 2 theatre is where I first saw BENEATH, on June 13, 1970, probably the 1:45 PM showing -- I can't really remember.
How many here are old enough to have seen BENEATH when it originally opened? When do you remember first hearing of "Beneath" and what did you think of it before you saw it?
I'd known a sequel was in the works, but I knew nothing else. I came home from school (5th grade) one afternoon in late May 1970, and my younger brother had been home all day for some reason, and he told me he'd seen a commercial on TV for "Underneath the Planet of the Apes." I went nuts, of course, and spent the next day sitting in front of the TV for hours, and I'm not kidding, hours waiting for a 30 second commercial for this movie. I kept the channel on either 5 (WNEW) or 11 (WPIX) until that commercial showed up -- it was torture. When it finally did arrive it was the commercial where you first see the white arrow drop down and cut the screen in half. I was struck right away with how bizarre the movie looked, it wasn't at all what I thought the sequel would be -- the whole mutant thing seemed very strange.
I also remember wondering, "Who the hell is James Franciscus?"

I'm asking because I'm getting ready to watch the Blu-ray of THE HUSTLER, having recently bought it when Amazon dropped the price to just $9.99.

I remember seeing BENEATH at Topeka's Grand Theater, which was in the 600 block of SW Jackson Street back then. It would've been mid-July 1970 when I saw it, along with my brother Eric and a couple of our friends. I was thirteen at the time. The building was razed around 1990 to make way for a parking lot to accommodate office workers in the area.
I also recall how I'd been told the same thing around then: the title was supposed to be "Underneath the Planet of the Apes" and when I finally saw the commercial, I couldn't wait for it to arrive...but I too agree with just how bizarre it turned out to be. I kept wondering when they were going to go below ground...however, I did find the subway scene impressive, and how the New York landmarks were portrayed (the New York Public Library, the Stock Exchange, and Radio City Music Hall, and the Cathedral)...but the mutants were something else again.
My brother thought that when Brent and Nova came out of the tunnel, he was expecting to see New York being rebuilt...that wasn't the case, though, and the mutants worshipping the Bomb got to everyone in the audience. As did the events leading to such a bleak ending. As Taylor set off the Bomb I remember Eric turning to me and saying, "Well, that's it...there won't be any more Planet of the Apes", but he wanted to see who played what character as the credits rolled.
Personally, we felt bad because Zira and Cornelius were the only decent ones in the movie, and for them to get killed off was depressing. But of course, there was another sequel which followed, and told of their story as they attempted to ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES.
And, I've said this before...but wasn't there the scene where Caspay, the Verger of the Cathedral, and the Fat Man (Adiposo) running by the ruined Radio City marquee and were gunned down by orders of General Ursus on the way to the Cathedral? I am still certain this scene existed...along with the Ape Army going past the Stock Exchange.
I feel an entire movie could have been made which bridged the gap between BENEATH and ESCAPE...but fortunately, some of the members have made superb comics which have attempted to bridge that very gap (i.e., "Milo, Rider at the World's End", and "Salvage", among others). In any case I can't thank them enough for doing as such.
Anyway, these are my own memories of the movie.
Zach
