.htmlI first saw Beneath at the Marboro theater in Brooklyn in 1970. I don't remember the exact date but I believe it was early summer. It stands out because it was one of few movies I saw in a movie theater with my father. He worked a swing shift so he wasn't usually able to come with us. It was also the first time we sat in the balcony which at 8 years old I thought was really cool.

I came home from school (5th grade) one afternoon in late May 1970, and my younger brother had been home all day for some reason, and he told me he'd seen a commercial on TV for "Underneath the Planet of the Apes." I went nuts, of course, and spent the next day sitting in front of the TV for hours, and I'm not kidding, hours waiting for a 30 second commercial for this movie. I kept the channel on either 5 (WNEW) or 11 (WPIX) until that commercial showed up -- it was torture. When it finally did arrive it was the commercial where you first see the white arrow drop down and cut the screen in half. I was struck right away with how bizarre the movie looked, it wasn't at all what I thought the sequel would be -- the whole mutant thing seemed very strange. > > I also remember wondering, "Who the hell is James Franciscus?" > > -- Rory >

Personally, we felt bad because Zira and Cornelius were the only decent ones in the movie, and for them to get killed off was depressing.
It's strange that they wanted to make a movie that's as much of a downer as BENEATH is, but I guess they kind of boxed themselves in when they decided to go down the nuclear war/radiation-effects thing. I wish they'd gone down the Pierre Boulle "Planet of Men" thing instead, but not exactly the way Boulle wanted, because Boulle destroyed the planet of the apes at the end of his script, too.
Seeing BENEATH in Manhattan was a weird thing, too, because I came out of the theatre and took a bus back down through the city to get on the Staten Island Ferry, and I can remember looking at the city from the bus and thinking, "This is all going to be destroyed someday." I actually wanted to believe the POTA movies were going to happen.

I remember seeing BENEATH at Topeka's Grand Theater, which was in the 600 block of SW Jackson Street back then. It would've been mid-July 1970 when I saw it, along with my brother Eric and a couple of our friends. I was thirteen at the time. The building was razed around 1990 to make way for a parking lot to accommodate office workers in the area.
I also recall how I'd been told the same thing around then: the title was supposed to be "Underneath the Planet of the Apes" and when I finally saw the commercial, I couldn't wait for it to arrive...but I too agree with just how bizarre it turned out to be. I kept wondering when they were going to go below ground...however, I did find the subway scene impressive, and how the New York landmarks were portrayed (the New York Public Library, the Stock Exchange, and Radio City Music Hall, and the Cathedral)...but the mutants were something else again.
My brother thought that when Brent and Nova came out of the tunnel, he was expecting to see New York being rebuilt...that wasn't the case, though, and the mutants worshipping the Bomb got to everyone in the audience. As did the events leading to such a bleak ending. As Taylor set off the Bomb I remember Eric turning to me and saying, "Well, that's it...there won't be any more Planet of the Apes", but he wanted to see who played what character as the credits rolled.
Personally, we felt bad because Zira and Cornelius were the only decent ones in the movie, and for them to get killed off was depressing. But of course, there was another sequel which followed, and told of their story as they attempted to ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES.
And, I've said this before...but wasn't there the scene where Caspay, the Verger of the Cathedral, and the Fat Man (Adiposo) running by the ruined Radio City marquee and were gunned down by orders of General Ursus on the way to the Cathedral? I am still certain this scene existed...along with the Ape Army going past the Stock Exchange.
I feel an entire movie could have been made which bridged the gap between BENEATH and ESCAPE...but fortunately, some of the members have made superb comics which have attempted to bridge that very gap (i.e., "Milo, Rider at the World's End", and "Salvage", among others). In any case I can't thank them enough for doing as such.
Anyway, these are my own memories of the movie.

I had always wondered what New Yorkers thought about it when PLANET and BENEATH came out...I wondered if they were offended by all of those fantastic landmarks being in ruins. New York City is a very picturesque, dynamic city, and isn't it still the largest city in the world?

.html
Due to circumstances in the last month I've had the opportunity to show family members "Rise of the POTA". Not because it's POTA but because it's a recent movie I have that they haven't seen but heard about and want to see. I'm pretty well known in the family as a POTA fan but it's a little different than being a "Star Trek" fan or "Star Wars" fan. At least that they could understand. During most of my life POTA was seen as "B" movies by many, including the classic original. So it's kind of interesting that a POTA movie is something they want to see and wind up loving. I've show "Rise" to relatives I haven't seen in almost 30 years. I even got to show it to the parents of the babysitter who introduced me to POTA in the first place. Not only do they enjoy it but I think "Rise" deals with the themes that made us POTA fans in the first place (some "Rise"
haters might disagree). So I've found myself with family that now "gets" POTA. In that sense it's kind of a vindication. My aunt liked POTA and was probably my closest POTA ally in the family. She liked to mention a TV review she saw when the original came out that said basically, you might not be interested in a movie called "Planet of the Apes" but go see it. You'll be glad you did. Unfortunately my aunt died in 2010 so she didn't get to see "Rise" and I'm sorry she didn't. I think she would've loved it. Ironically, the last movie we saw together was the Andy Serkis "King Kong" (which made her cry). She also got to know Natalie Trundy and they got on well, which was cool. My aunt gave me my first POTA item, a Mego gorilla soldier.
So, does anyone have "Rise" vindication stories? Maybe you don't even like "Rise" but you have friends or relatives who "get" POTA now because of it? <.html

On the 'net there seems to be a mixed reaction, with some loving it and others not so much ("Rise" and "Dawn" seeming too similar). I dunno, it sounds like what they use to wash their damn, dirty dishes; it's tough on food particles but gentle on their stinkin' paws. But I like that it reminds me of the "Dawn of Man" opening sequence from "2001: A Space Odyssey" ("Rise" director Rupert Wyatt is a big Kubrick fan). In 1968 POTA and "2001" came out a couple months apart and will always be connected in my mind. So for that reason I will tip my hat to this new title.

Going to chime in here for just a moment about this. Neither scene existed
in the film, although there is a section in the BENEATH paperback
adaptation where the three mutants are gunned down. This was
completely made up by the author (Michael Avallone) though, because it
never appeared in any of the different versions of the screenplay (which he
used to adapt into the novelization) I've read. As for the Ape Army going
past the Stock Exchange, that reminds me of the image from the poster where you
see them by the marquee for Radio City (this image appeared other places as
well, including the cover of the Super 8 film box). Of course, this never
actually happened in the film either.
Simply put, your mind can play tricks on you over the course of time. For
example, the first time I saw BENEATH from star to finish was when CBS
rebroadcast it in May 1976 (someone here correct me if I'm wrong on the date),
and I **vividly** remember a scene where the Fat Man was
hurriedly walking around the underground city saying "Adults to the
Cathedral. Children indoors." (Albina was there walking with him as well
but not saying anything) shortly after the "We've no defense" scene. It's a
complete mental fabrication though- if for no other reason than the fact that a
"public thought projection" would be silent. I can see and hear the
scene clearly in my head, but I know damn well it doesn't exist.
With the two scenes you're describing, what probably happened is that the
both the section from the paperback and the movie artwork just crept into the
back of your mind and it got meshed together. Stuff like this happens all the
time though- often with personal family memories and experiences as well- so
it's not unusual that the same thing would happen with a fictional story since
memories are formed the same way.
Chris L.
>>And, I've said this before...but wasn't there the scene where
Caspay, the Verger of the Cathedral, and the Fat Man (Adiposo) running by the
ruined Radio City marquee and were gunned down by orders of General Ursus on the
way to the Cathedral? I am still certain this scene existed...along with the Ape
Army going past the Stock Exchange. <<<.html <.html

Yes, happy birthday Maurice Evans!
I was talking to someone recently who has the first season of "The Mod Squad" on DVD, and Maurice Evans is in a couple episodes and this person says he's really good in it. I may have to see if Netflix rents it and check it out.

.html I don't recall if this has been mentioned before, but last night I was watching some of RISE on Cinemax, and for the first time with headphones on (it was after midnight and I didn't want to be heard by neighbors). In the scene between Franco and Pinto just after John Lithgow dies, there's a radio on in the background (I heard it in the right headphone speaker), and a radio interviewer is briefly talking to a woman from NASA. I couldn't make out exactly what they are saying because the actors are talking over it, but it was intriguing. I doubt now that the "Icarus" flight to Mars was simply to just go to Mars. <.html

.htmlInteresting. That would make the most sense, that it had a secret mission and Mars was the cover story. The "Lost in Space" newspaper could be part of the cover up, though I wish they had cut that shot out, since it dates the events to 2016, which will be outdated in a few years (unless 2016 is what the government WANTS us to believe!).
A thing for me is during the cookie scene where Caesar rallies the troops, on the TV it looks like a scene from "Conquest". I know it's not because it's not credited but it reminds me of that.

Sorry, this is late, I'm just caching up. I lost mine a few years
back. We didn't
always see eye to eye, but he was my fixed point in this universe. I
guess you'd
say Kim was my trail run. But it's not the same. No matte how much you
care for
them, someone you met a few times is not who raised you. I
still see them, if only in
my dreams. No wisdom is passed from beyond the veil, but...still.
It's nice to see
them from time to time. I got a recorder from my mother.
It has my dad testing
it. And it's nice to hear his voice from beyond the grave. I
guess I should listen
to the interview I made with Kim for a school project now. Been over
10 years since I last
heard it, so, it's past due to hear her voice. That helps more
that videos. In vids, you know
they've gone, and you can't reach them. In audio, well, let's just say it
could have been
yesterday, with no visual reference to date it. Cherish the time you
had. It's only now
you know their true value. Now, when you go forward, you'll know
what's worth your time.
Take care,
T

My dad died last Sunday and his memorial is Saturday. I bring it up because
of the POTA connections. My own POTA adventures meant he knew Natalie Trundy
and Bill "stage Cornelius" Blake personally. One of my favorite POTA memories
is when I took Natalie to a sci-fi convention because Charlton Heston was
going to be there. It was just after POTA2001 was greenlit. Linda Harrison was
there and one of her sons and we hung with Heston and then Natalie and Linda
took me to lunch. Anyway, the next day was my dad's birthday (so I guess April
2000) and it didn't occur to me to say something, I guess Natalie did, and
Linda signed one of her hotter pictures to my dad, saying, "You were fantastic
last night!". Just a terrific idea for an autographed photo and he loved it.
That was such a sweet gesture from Natalie and Linda and I will always be
grateful. My dad never understood my love of POTA either as a kid or an adult
and that's something I was sad about but such are relationships. Another
thing that occurred to me lately is how the death of a father is significant
in both the POTA movies that came out in the last almost 40 years. There's the
scene between Thade and his father (played by Heston himself). Yeah, people
groan about that scene (damn, they got Heston in ape makeup and that's the
best they could come up with?) but I'm always moved by Thade's reaction to his
dad's death. This scene is significant because Tim Burton's dad died during
preproduction on POTA2001. Reportedly he was never close to his folks but
there was something there because his next film was the ode to fatherhood "Big
Fish". As it turns out, I love that movie and the song Eddie Vedder wrote for
it, "Man of the Hour" and in fact I'm quoting it in the memorial card people
will receive at my dad's service:
And the road the old man paved The
broken seams along the way The rusted signs left just for me He was
guiding me Love, his own way
Now the man of the hour Is taking
his final bow As the curtain comes down I feel this is just goodbye for
now
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/05/10/dark-shadows-tim-burton-and-richard-d-zanuck-form-a-family/
And
of course the death of a father plays a big part in "Rise of the POTA" (it
could be considered the reason the POTA is born). My dad was struggling with
his health when that came out and I felt it was a pretty interesting theme for
the original POTA generation. They were kids when the original POTA movies
came out and now many of them are dealing with the same thing Will is in the
movie, aging parents. So, here's to you dad, and to all the POTA fathers
who are struggling.

Does anyone have a final draft of the Rise script that details what is being said on the radio?

It is kinda background and doesn't suggest anything with the Icarus. Maybe it was part of something bigger they decided to cut. It seems in the end they decided to downplay the Icarus. People on the set reported seeing designs for Heston's actual ship but they ultimately went with generic footage. Maybe they decided to pull back and decide later whether they really want to go the "direct prequel" route.

All I can make out is something about "light" and something about looking for something else in the universe. I'm already forgetting what I heard. I'll have to go listen again, but because they're talking over it, it's almost impossible to make it entirely out.

The last word from the director is that the Icarus is Heston's ship, and that would make more sense if the mission is secret and Mars is a cover story (though there's still refs to the '60's/70's in the original films. I guess that's what they're hashing out with the sequel scripts now. My take is the idea that "Rise" etc. is a direct sequel to the original (which the director seems to think) if they bring in the alternate timelines physicists are leaning towards (put in to play in the recent "Star Trek" movie). We know Heston came from "Escape" 's 1973 but if he crossed a timeline then the future seen in POTA68 could be the future of "Rise" that he crosses into. But I don't see how the Icarus in "Rise" could serve as Heston's ship unless we stay loose with the dialogue in the original.

And so, I posted about the possibility that the "Rise" sequels might do some alternate universeing to connect to POTA68 and low and behold, there is an internet story about Fox planting the flag for "Days of Future Past", the X-Men story that deals in alternate timelines. What the hell does that have to with anything? Well, give me a minute and I'll explain, Smarty! It might seem odd but the 10 year old "X-Men" movies don't match up with the recent "X-Men: First Class" reboot/prequel (see what I did there? It seems pretty much how "Rise" was described and "First Class" and it's sequel will come out the same year as "Rise" and it's sequel). So fans are speculating that using the alternate universe "Days of Future Past" storyline, Fox will match up the "old" "X-Men" movies with the new ones. Did I say Fox? Yes I did, the same studio that has
POTA in it's grimy mitts. So if this speculation is correct, the current Fox regime is not above playing with alternate timelines, and their star POTA director who sez "Rise" leads directly into POTA68 may be listened to.

I for one can't help but wonder what the POTA TV series would have been like if he had had a hand in it. Ray will be missed, even if we don't really realize it. At least he left a legacy for us all, in the form of a huge body of work ranging from books to plays, both audio and stage, to movies and TV shows that will likely live on for generations to come.

Yes, happy birthday Maurice Evans!
I was talking to someone recently who has the first season of "The Mod Squad
on DVD, and Maurice Evans is in a couple episodes and this person says he's
really good in it. I may have to see if Netflix rents it and check it out. <.html

Of course not. Every writer in science fiction creates their own universe with its own internal rules. What one writer says is possible or impossible in his or her own story has absolutely no impact on what another writer says is possible or impossible in his or her story.

I'm not talking literally, but figuratively. Bradbury wrote a short story, I'm sure you know it, where traveling into the past and changing anything results in a reshaping of the future. That makes nonsense of Dehn's trying to tie up the POTA series into a closed loop of any kind. Bradbury was a Science Fiction writer of much greater credentials than Dehn, and for me, in this respect, I'll take Bradbury over Dehn.

We now know that there is no life on Mars and movies, novels & stories reflect that fact. Does that make nonsense out of Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles? When The Martian Chronicles were published, did it make nonsense out of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds? No, they exist in totally different fictional universes that have there own rules.

I wish they had ignored a lot more than they did. POTA2001 paid homage to many of the sillier and more camp aspects of the original series. Simply an ape army marching across a desert landscape does not POTA make, nor does aping dialogue from the first movie. It was a mess, of course.
I think everyone at Fox now is very much trying to figure out the future path, and I wish them luck. Keep your fingers crossed that what they create doesn't suck. It so easily can.

.htmlYeah, I think they left it open because they weren't even sure if it would be successful and have sequels (whether audiences would accept CG apes was a big question). Now that it's going to be a "trilogy" they have to decide what they are going to do.
The problem with POTA2001 was the script. It doesn't matter to me if a new POTA movie is directly linked to the originals. If someone did a good POTA movie that was totally it's own thing that would be fine. But if the "Rise" team wants to tie it in I would be interested in how they do it. Some fans didn't feel "Rise" was close enough to the originals; they want a continuation or a new story with the same makeup and costumes. To each their own. I just want a POTA movie that lives up to POTA at it's best (social commentary, good characters, good filmmaking).

.html You bet. But I think it's a trilogy for the current director and then they will take it another direction with someone else. Just like the current Batman "ends" this summer as a trilogy and then they move on. The current "Star Trek" screenwriter said they will probably do a trilogy. It's respectful to the directors who do a good job to not have their "take" carried on by someone else. Let the next director do their own thing.
Fox's latest prequel "Prometheus" sounds like it has a built in sequel (natch) but will it get one? The reviews are mixed, though it sounds like it's worth seeing just for the visuals and Michael Fassbender. Ebert gave it 4 stars (top score) and he was less kind to "Rise" (and POTA in general). Sounds more "2001" than "Alien".

.html Been re-reading Michael Wilson's shooting script from May 1967 and it's wonderful. It's the closest thing we'll get to a novelisation of the movie, full of poetic, descriptive narrative. There's little bits like Landon staring dazed at Stewart's corpse that hint at an earlier relationship and the description of the approaching planet was maybe only realised in the TV Series credits. It's a great read.John,Scrolls. <.html

.html For some mad reason, I've had, for years, a few of the Apes Super 8 reels, even though I'll never own a projector.Has anybody viewed these? Are they exactly like edited versions of the films or are there differences? Is there any way to slap them on disc? Why am I so useless with this stuff? John, Scrolls. <.html

.htmlI think DAWN, or DOTPOTA as I'll now call it (if I'm the first, I'm owed a cent every time it's used), is a VERY important movie for Apedom--if it's a big hit, we're secure for years. If it's Cowboys and Aliens, we're sunk.Just like Beneath,if it's inventive, surprising and really moves the Apes on story-wise, it could be the foundation for a new cinematic Apes dynasty. We need, I personally think, not only an empathetic,Zira type Ape, to hook us, but also, maybe, an heroic human type.No pressure folks, just make it brilliant, successful and lasting.John, Scrolls.

.html.html Al provided me with captures of his reels. They're kind of rough, but the plan was to include them on Rarities 3. How many years have I been sitting on that? Someday....
If memory serves, they're like highlight reels with key scenes from each film.

.htmlThe more I think about it, Rise and Dawn do seem to similar. Of course Conquest and Battle are similar too. I always liked 'Birth of the Planet of the Apes' as a film title. I wonder why they didn't use that.

So for that reason I will tip my hat to this new title. > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2iiPpcwfCA >

.htmlMaybe they like it because they are similar, sun metaphors. "Dawn" is fine because it reminds of "2001" 's "Dawn of Man" and the director is a Kubrick man. He compared "Rise" to "Sparticus" and the sequel to "Full Metal Jacket".
