Maybe they like it because they are similar, sun metaphors. "Dawn" is fine because it reminds of "2001" 's "Dawn of Man" and the director is a Kubrick man. He compared "Rise" to "Sparticus" and the sequel to "Full Metal Jacket".
I hope the third one's not EYES WIDE SHUT. DR. STRANGELOVE maybe. <.html

I used to have BENEATH on Super 8 but I'd given it to a cousin when I purchased the VHS tape. I had a projector at that time too but with the advent of VHS recorder/players, they took the place of the old reel-and-projector technology.
BENEATH was very heavily edited, as I recall, it was mainly situated on the last thirty minutes of the film than anything else.
There are ways to transfer old reel movies over to DVD disc, I've had to take some old home movies I'd made back in the mid-Seventies to one of the Walgreen's stores and they in turn sent them to a firm associated with the store...in any case, I had them put onto one DVD pretty cheaply, considering how many I'd taken back then.

They're also all pan & scan, so you're not even seeing the entire original images.
There were three versions of these Super 8 mini movies, Black & White, Color, and Color with sound. I never had a projector that had sound, so I never got the sound versions, just the color ones, which I eventually all put on one big reel.

Don't worry---I've sat on the reels for what must be decades. These things aren't like the old black and white reels that used to blow up are they? Sometimes with these things, the footage is actually slightly different when people have assumed it's identical to the main feature. It would be good to check it, anyway.John, Scrolls.

I was think the same thing when I was watching some of RISE on Cinemax cable. It does get better with each viewing, and I think it'll get even better appraisal as it ages.
As for the Burton movie, which I also occasionally catch some of on satellite.... it's unwatchable.

.htmlOT: when I met Ray Bradbury in 1999 during a space commercialization conference in Los Angeles, I did NOT ask for his autograph but instead opted for a nice brief chat. Why? In 1991 when I met Charlton Heston in Charlottesville, Va. I focused mainly on getting a picture with him and also his autograph in my POTA book (which I'd purchased weeks before, especially for that purpose). There consequently wasn't time for much of a conversation with "Colonel Taylor" as a result. I subsequently vowed never to repeat that mistake ever again. It will remain one of my life's regrets, as he was and likely remains my favorite actor of all time (and was thrilled to hear me say that). Now if I meet someone inspirational, I ask for an inspirational quote, NOT an authograph. Believe me, it'll carry you further in various ways. :-)
A good weekend to all from Houston, TX (where Colonel Taylor likely trained)...

Looks like BOOM! is wrapping the current ongoing
POTA comic (with the zeppelins) and will start a new ongoing with the creators
of "Betrayal" and "Exile" in September (set just before the original movie).
With covers by Alex Ross! That's what I'm talking about.

I haven't contacted Fox to ask them when it'll be available on Blu Ray. Might anyone here have an idea? Either way, my order from Amazon shipped today. OK, today is the 40th anniversary of "Conquest".
Ricardo Montalban played Armando, of course. But I also knew that Ricardo's
iconic role as Khan in "Star Trek 2: the Wrath of Khan" came out 30 years ago
this summer. Were their anniversaries the same day? Naw, but it was the same
month. "Star Trek 2" came out June 4rth, 1982.
Is "Star Trek 2" the best "Star Trek"
movie? I think so. Is Khan Montalban's most iconic role? I think so. But it's
interesting about his two classic sci-fi roles. In both cases he had two
performances (Armando in "Escape" and "Conquest", Khan in the "Space Seed" ep of
"Star Trek" and "Star Trek 2"). In both cases I think he gave the better
performance in the latter ones (but wow, were all performances terrific). In the
case of POTA, he played a man of peace in a series that was about war (more or
less). For "Star Trek", where humanity had found a way to live peacefully, he
was the face of war.
I would say Khan in "Star Trek 2" is his most
iconic role, followed by... I dunno. He rocked in his two POTA movies but
there's also Mr. Rourke of "Fantasy Island" and the grandpa in the "Spy Kids"
movies (which introduced him to a new generation). So where does Armando fit in
an incredible career? <.html <.html

I know Joe Russo still monitors this group, so maybe he'll chime in on CONQUEST's official release date.
I go with June 29th, as that is my recollection from my memories of going through The New York Times each day back then looking for ads, but I have no idea of when it opened in L.A.

Oddly, the review on the Variety website, says it was published December 31st, 1971 which was before the film was shot.

Remember in the seventies when movies always opened on a Wednesday, not Friday like now?
Well, I first saw BATTLE on Wednesday, July 4, 1973 in Oneonta, New York. I remember being puzzled at the time that it hadn't yet opened in NYC.

So far scheduled for the merry month of May is the sequel to the as yet unveiled "Amazing Spiderman" on 5/2/14. Paramount has just announced they are moving their "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot to May 16 2014, where it will square off against an unnamed Marvel movie ("Ant Man"?). On 5/23, "Dawn" takes on Adam Sandler in "Pixels", a kind of "Roger Rabbit" for famous video game characters. And on May 30th Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur" will be unveiled.
OK, OK, not so bad. "Dawn" is gonna make them wish they were never born, er, filmed. Will the apes rule the summer? So far the only other titles are "Capt. America 2" and Spielberg's sci-fi "Robopocalypse" in April (when "Dawn" should've been scheduled so it could be Ape-ril) and the sequels to "X-Men: First Class" and "Transformers" in July. "Rise" whupped "X-Men" and "Capt. America" but "Transformers" is the one to beat based on past performance. Everything else is an unknown quantity. No "Harry Potter"s or "Pirates" or Batmans that summer. But there's still a whole lot of scheduling and shifting to be done, so we'll see. Less than two years to go.

Other then sending it into an expensive transfer facility there are a
couple of ways. I never tried it, but one's called an Ambico Video
Transfer Box. It's basically a scaled down version with a mirror and screen. You
shine the projector on a screen on the box and point your camcorder in
the hole and make a transfer that way. You can find them on ebay. But if
you want here's an alternative method I found online...
Project onto a plain piece of white paper about 11 x 17 with the video
camera next to the projector. You can control contrast by letting a little
diffused/bounced light from a 150 W household tungsten lamp fall on the
'screen'. Do a custom white balance on the 'screen' with the projector running
without film, or just set the camera to the tungsten pre-set.
Adjust the projector speed to give minimum flicker. Are you shooting PAL or
NTSC video? 8 mm film can be transferred at 16.67 fps (=50/3)or 25 fps (=50/2)
to PAL and 20 fps to NTSC. Most Standard/Regular/Double 8 mm film was shot at 16
fps or thereabouts and Super 8 was either 18 or 24 fps - but these aren't
hard-and-fast rules.
If you are dedicating a projector to video transfer there are a couple of
mods that will help: filing out the film gate to show the whole film frame and a
little beyond; and removing all the shutter blades except the blade(s) that
interrupts the light during pull-down

There were three versions of these Super 8 mini movies, Black &
White, Color, and Color with sound. I never had a projector that had
sound, so I never got the sound versions, just the color ones, which I
eventually all put on one big reel.

The answer is, yes. Movies like PLANET require "suspension of disbelief" and that often requires that things not get said that would cause the viewer to "think about it too much."
I think Rupert Wyatt in his commentary for RISE said that their was dialogue in the script, and I think it was shot, that talked about how advanced Caesar's physiology was and that he had a developing voice box or some such, but it was cut because they didn't want to help give away the ending.

It was particularly neat driving through New Mexico for the first time (in 1992) and hearing a radio broadcast of his voice greeting newcomers. I think traffic signs directed us to listen to that station. The place looked like the Forbidden Zone. Good time :-)
I didn't see him in Spy Kids as I seldom go to the silver screen lately (since litigation's sufficiently exciting for me while movie ticket prices increasingly exceed used Blu Ray ones). And I haven't had (or particularly wanted) a television in years. But just this week I purchased the POTA series on Blu-Ray (thanks to the announcement of one of our participants), so I look forward to seeing Armando in action again.
Greetings from Houston :-)

"Star Trek 2" came out June 4rth, 1982.
> Is "Star Trek 2" the best "Star Trek" movie? I think so. Is Khan Montalban's most iconic role? I think so. But it's interesting about his two classic sci-fi roles. In both cases he had two performances (Armando in "Escape" and "Conquest", Khan in the "Space Seed" ep of "Star Trek" and "Star Trek 2"). In both cases I think he gave the better performance in the latter ones (but wow, were all performances terrific). In the case of POTA, he played a man of peace in a series that was about war (more or less). For "Star Trek", where humanity had found a way to live peacefully, he was the face of war.
> I would say Khan in "Star Trek 2" is his most iconic role, followed by... I dunno. He rocked in his two POTA movies but there's also Mr. Rourke of "Fantasy Island" and the grandpa in the "Spy Kids" movies (which introduced him to a new generation). So where does Armando fit in an incredible career?

You probably didn't wait 2 weeks to see "Conquest", did you? That would've been 2 weeks if it came out June 14. Maybe you saw a preview?
Dear Heavenly Father,
Please bring your faithful servant Joe Russo here to us so that he may explain where he got June 14. Thank you.
If you want I could give him a call. I talked to him only a week or so ago, but I'll bet he wouldn't know the answer. But you never know.
I strongly suspect it opened in L.A. before it opened in New York, but without getting to an LA Times from the era, I don't know how we find the answer. Anyone in the LA area willing to go to a library and see if they have the paper on microfilm that far back?

I heard about Rodney King's passing. I'm saddened about it.
"Can't we all just get along" is very fitting for the APES saga, too.
