Well, I think they were definitely going for an original POTA look and with how tall he ends up there's no doubt where he's headed. The director probably told them to make his hair look purty for when Heston arrives.

Something I noticed in Rise of the POTA is Caesars hair get slightly fuller and darker and the suggestion of a part in it? From the fight on the bridge till the films end or am I imagining it? Its starting to look like my POTA 68 trading cards with Cornelius and Zira on them with the shorter doos as opposed to the Escape onward look. It would be cool to have an update of the original look not Burton look though they did a great job. Am I wrong? Take care John M.

Wow. There's quite a bit to absorb from that one article. I was also surprised to hear that up to that point there was a monkey in each of his previous movies (can anyone confirm that?).

When it comes to Frankenstein, there was a pretty faithful made for TV adaptation in the mid seventies. "Frankenstein: The True Story" was an extended movie shown over 2 night with Micheal Sarazzin as the creature and an all star cast with lavish sets and high production values. It would be surprising that Jacobs did not know about this production if he was at all close to Hollywood. I wonder if he was marginally involved. Nothing in IMDB seems to indicate so: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070074/

Never even heard of "Journey of the Oceanauts" much less the fact that he had already gone to the trouble to panelling out the scenes. x But if if he did have all the scenes mapped out like that, there must have been a script to go along. It is surprising to hear that Jacobs believed we were even close to having 'artificial gills' and that we would soon be able to walk under the ocean like that. And what the hell was that about bunnies being surgically altered to live under water for six months!

I hope to see more from the Jacobs File collection, but you really have to get a scanner. You'll be transcribing way to much.

Thanks for posting this Jeff.

Subject: [PotaDG] The Jacobs File # 1

Due to my relationship with Natalie Trundy I wound up with a lot of Arthur Jacobs stuff, including clippings compiled by his staff. There's been plenty written about his POTA movies but I was curious about some of his sci-fi projects that got away. He was planning a faithful version of the novel that started science fiction, Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" (eventually made in the '90's by Kenneth Branagh, with music by Patrick "Rise of the POTA" Doyle). He was the first producer to pursue a movie version of the book "Dune". And what sounds like his primo project, "Journey of the Oceanauts", was a hard sell along the lines of his original POTA.
I decided it was time to go through this stuff. But better yet, maybe WE should go through this stuff. I'll try to daily post something (I'll have to describe since I can't scan) and in about 20 years we'll get through it. Here's the first piece:

It's a story from reporter Dick Kleiner for the Newspaper Enterprise Association/New York-Cleveland. There's no date but it looks like it came out with "Escape".

"Movie Producer Goes Ape" by Dick Kleiner (includes a picture of Jacobs)

HOLLYWOOD - (NEA) - Producers are men who solve problems, but Arthur P. Jacobs has one now which is a real brain-buster. Where can he put a monkey in a film set underwater? This requires some explanation. Jacobs has come to regard the presence of a monkey in his movies as a lucky talisman, much as Alfred Hitchcock always sticks himself in his movies somewhere.
It began with his first film, "What A Way To Go", in which an ape helped Paul Newman paint pictures. Then came "Doctor Dolittle", where Rex Harrison had a monkey buddy. "Planet of the Apes" followed and that was all-monkey. After that, he found spots for chimps in "The Chairman" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", and then came two more "Planet of the Apes" pictures - "Beneath the POTA" and the new one, "Escape From the POTA", which is a delight. Coming up is a fourth in the series, "Conquest of the POTA".
And then will come Jacobs' biggest film, "Journey of the Oceanauts". This is the story of four men walking across the Pacific, underwater, in the 1990's from Los Angeles to Japan. Now, where can he put that monkey? Jacobs has been working on "Oceanauts" for a couple of years already. He showed me some of the 1,100 drawings he has had made, drawings which show each scene and how the effects can be achieved. He says the possibility that men will be able to walk along the ocean floor by the 1990's is scientifically sound. By then, there will be a way of operating on a man, giving him a form of artificial gills. He says that already such surgery has been performed on rabbits who have survived happily underwater for as long as six months.
Before that film is shot, however, the fourth of the "Apes" movies will come along. There seems to be no end in sight for this hugely successful series. Jacobs thought the second one would be the last and the apes' planet blew up at the end of that one and everybody was killed. But the world wanted more, so Jacobs figured out a way to do the one in current release. The fourth will be relatively easy, and if you've seen "Escape From the POTA" you can pretty well figure out what "Conquest of the POTA" will be about. After that - "If that's the last", Jacobs says - there will be a TV show based on the Apes plot. He says they have been after him to do a series since the original film came out, but he won't do it until the feature films have run their course. He'll be happy meanwhile if anybody can tell him where to put that monkey in the underwater picture. He's losing sleep over it.

John,

I'm very sorry you feel that way and apologize for anything I said that has offended you. I have no doubt that you saw Conquest on June 28th at the Embassy theater. But based on the available evidence, I assume it must have been a press screening or special preview.

I have seen many films at such previews before the official release date. In 2001, one of the newspapers here in NYC had special screening of the remake a few days before it opened on July 27th.

Aaargh!!! Back in 74 when the TV show premiered I took all my collected clippings from the apes films and put them in a huge green scrapbook. Dated every ad I'd saved, too. Had one from every day CONQUEST was in NY theatres. if only I could find this book the mystery would be solved...but it's been missing for years.....

Well I'll make this offer, if anyone can come up with evidence that Conquest opened in LA or anywhere on June 14th; I'll send them a Medicom Gorilla Soldier figure.
To be clear up front, evidence would be ads in local newspapers showing the film was running in local theaters that were open to the public on June 14th. Press previews, charity screenings, etc. don't count. Thanks.

It doesn't sound unreasonable to me, but Jeff has problems with that. I'm still open to the possibility that it may have opened in LA or other places before New York based on how BATTLE was rolled out the next year, but I just haven't anyway to find that out.

I seriously, seriously doubt that the suits at Fox want to, even in the ultimate course of the trilogy that they're planning, that they want to get to a point where they will recreate, in CGI or whatever, the look (makeup design, costumes, art direction) of the original movie.  I'm sure their attitude is one of, "You want the original movie?  GO WATCH THE ORIGINAL MOVIE!"

You're just setting yourselves up for disappointment and frustration if you have the desire for Fox to simply return you to the planet of the apes for "More Adventures on the Old Planet of the Apes."  BOOM! is doing that for you.  That's where it is going to happen.  As far as $100 Million dollar movie productions go, it'll be in their own direction and at this point, who knows about the future?

It'll be fun to see what they come up with, but only if you don't expect them to do what you want them to do.

When Heston arrives??? Jeff, Heston died four years ago, it was in all the papers. Unless, OMG!!! Are you saying that when the zombie apocalypse comes, it will be led by Charlton Heston?!?!?!?

In the end, nothing replaces a simple newspaper ad from the date in question to definitively answer these questions.

We need someone "somewhere in the universe" to find the LA Times on microfilm and look at June 14, 1972 and see if there is an ad for the opening of CONQUEST in LA on that date.  Until that happens, this will always be in question.

At the same time now, in order to help clear up what John remembers, we need to look at The New York Times on June 28, 1972 and see if an ad can be found of what was playing at the New Embassy Theatre on that date.  If it turns out that a movie was ending its run on that date, and there are running times shown, then we know for sure that CONQUEST didn't open until the next day, June 29, 1972.

We need people who live close to a library that still has these things to get their butts in there and look.  I just wish I could do it.

I'm comfortable now to say that the June 14, 1972 date in Eric Greene's book and in "POTA Revisited" is the actual opening theatrical date for CONQUEST, and that after all that has flown around in the last week or so, the movie did, in fact, open in LA before New York.  I still wish I had an ad to see, but I've suspected this was the case and this is as close to proof as we're likely to get until an actual premiere ad from June 14 in LA comes to the surface.

Being an "East Coast" APES fan, though, June 29th will always be the "real" opening date, but that makes John crazy, so, "Nuff said."

I'm still not sold. I checked the TCM website and it gets the date of Escape's release wrong by a week (http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/18642/Escape-from-the-Planet-of-the-Apes/) and doesn't even list a release date for Battle (http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/68193/Battle-for-the-Planet-of-the-Apes/) so any info from that site is not reliable.

I also checked the AFI website and they only list the month and year a film was released (http://www.afi.com/members/catalog/AbbrView.aspx?s=&Movie=54691) and they too get some facts wrong (http://www.afi.com/members/catalog/AbbrView.aspx?s=&Movie=22314) such as citing April 1968 as the release date for Planet.

So far there is no concrete proof that Conquest opened in LA or any where else prior to June 29th. That's just a supposition. We do know that Variety printed a review on June 14th but that doesn't prove the film opened on that date. In fact, the Variety review of Planet that William posted was dated January 31, 1968 (http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/1226848/499298507/name/img220%5B1%5D.jpg) so it may have been SOP back in those days for Variety to publish their review a week or two before a film opened.

    And so it continues....

I just wanted to point out that the review for CONQUEST was first published in Daily Variety on June 8, 1972, a day after the press screening at Fox on June 7th (according to what Jeff has).  The review was re-published in Weekly Variety (which was distributed around the country) for the week of June 14th, as were all the previous week's reviews from Daily Variety.  It's just a coincidence that that week's Weekly Variety was dated June 14th, as was -- supposedly -- the opening of CONQUEST in LA.

Hope I'm not further confusing anyone.

The January 31, 1968 Daily Variety review of PLANET is because there was a screening at Fox on Jan. 30th.  Heston mentions it in his entry for that date in "The Actor's Life."  Look it up.  ;)

By the way, I have photo-copies -- from Weekly Variety -- of the reviews for BENEATH and BATTLE (all of the APES films, in fact).  I don't recall the exact dates off the top of my head, but BENEATH's was in mid-April, 1970 and BATTLE's was in mid-May, 1973... so ponder that.  I think it was Variety's SOP to get a reviewer to the studio as soon as it had a screening.  Probably still is.

    .html
I celebrated the 40th anniversary of "Conquest of the POTA" on Friday by visiting Century City. I ate at Subway to honor the mutants but I didn't buy anything from Banana Republic or Aldo. Was I in a rush to see the sites of the ape revolution? No, let's just say I crossed that bridge when I came to it. Then I went to see the new doc "Paul Williams Still Alive" at the Nuart with a q & a with the man, the ape, the legend himself, and his director. No, Paul wasn't in "Conquest" but he knew Caesar, Lisa and Kolp personally.
The movie is a lot of fun and is very entertainingly told, keeping the old clips coming but mostly showing Paul's life today (concert tours, celebrity gold tournies, riding in cars). It's a very unassuming film, no big drama about being a celebrity and his substance abuse adventures. It's not TMZ. I guess I could catagorize it as comedic, in both it's style and subject. It's very moving in spots but the word for this is "fun", especially for those who have a hazy memory of the '70's as the "Me, Paul Williams" Decade.
OK, let's get down to brass tacks. There's only about a two second clip from "Battle", but they didn't show this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE2m355-JRo

However, they did show this clip seen at the end of the trailer:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Gc-fW_aSU

It's unlikely but maybe the DVD will have the full interview as an extra. There's no mention of "Battle", but for fans of Williams (and you certainly would be if you met him in person) or for people who want to know more about the man behind the ape Virgil, this doc is recommended. It's a good time.
Then there was the q & a, which was short (I'm not going to say it) so he could give out autographed posters of the movie and meet the folks. That's just the way he rolls, he's a people person and a great guy. There's a moment in the film where he and the director are watching a clip of him guest hosting "The Merv Griffin Show" in the '80's and he hated the person he had become, forbidding the director to use that clip. In the q & a he said he later agreed to show it because it was important to show what he felt was his lowest moment. It was also his idea that the director should become part of the film because he felt pretending there were no cameras would be a lie and he wanted to be truthful.
Someone mentioned "Bugsy Malone" (which he did the songs for) and he said the stage musical version is very successful in the U.K., it's performed a lot, it's as big as "Grease" is in the U.S. (that's big!). There are also plans for a remake of his cult film "The Phantom of the Paradise" using the same songs which he wrote (John Chambers did the makeup). And it's obvious from the movie and from the audience at the screening that he's as big as he ever was (sorry) to his fans. Paul rocks!
Here's an interview of him and his director (his director and he?) from "Aint It Cool". They have another interview for next week wherein he reportedly talks about his "Apes" work so keep the eyes peeled like a banana.

On the one hand it's great to see so many people actively debating such an obscure and miniscule piece of POTA history. But on the other hand I can't understand why it really matters all that much.

I guess at this point it's only groups like this one that gives a damn. Sad in a way, but if that's the case then perhaps it is more important than I originally thought.

I'm not routing for any one side, but I too would now like to find out if this ever gets resolved with indisputable proof.

I believe this is the first ever public showing of the bloody "Conquest" original cut that came out on blu-ray. Let's get that history written before we forget. 100 years from now when this version is a revered classic they'll want to know about the first public showing. We owe it to future generations.

    Well, June 26, 1972 was a Monday.  June 14, 1972 was a Wednesday, a week and a half before Monday, June 26th.

It's too bad we don't have an opening date for those engagements of CONQUEST at The Egyptian and Westwood Theatres, but it's becoming obvious to me that CONQUEST opened at those two theatres on June 14, 1972.  No definite proof yet, but that's what I think.

I no longer think that POTA Rivisted made a mistake about CONQUEST's opening date, nor the Greene book.  Joe Russo has told me he's never read Eric Greene's book, so it's too much of a coincidence that they'd both make the same mistake.  The two books must have gotten their information from independent sources, and those sources would most probably be giving them the correct information.  It's the Hollywood Reporter item that nails it for me, but AGAIN... I sure wish we had an opening day LA ad page with the June 14th date on it.

Magazines are usually dated a week or so later than when they hit the stands (the current "Hollywood Reporter", which was on the stands last Friday when I was in town, is dated June 29). So if you go back a week from 6/26 and then add "last week" it would be around June 14.

    Just had a thought.....

Is there anyone here in the LA area, or in that time zone, that would be willing to call the Main Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library system and ask them if they have the LA Times on microfilm back to June 14, 1972.  Then ask to talk to a librarian in the department that's in charge of the microfilms.  Hopefully you get a hold of someone nice.  Tell them that you're writing an article on the APES franchise and you need to nail down the opening of the movie in LA which you believe is on June 14, 1972, but you'd like to confirm it.  Then, (and this is the tricky part) ask if there's anyway this librarian could go look and see if there is an ad for the opening of the movie in the movie times section of the paper on that date.  Tell them that'll they don't have to do it right away -- if they'll do it at all -- and that you'll call back in an hour or something.  Be very nice and sound like you really need a favor because you can't do it yourself for some reason.

I'd do it myself, but I'm three hours behind LA and I work evenings, so I'm gone by two in the afternoon -- and it's long distance.

Let's see if there's anybody here with the guts to try even this.  Can't hurt to try.  Who knows, maybe even Billy Burge will try!

Great idea. If someone does go to the library in LA, please ask if they have archives for the old Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. The Herald-Examiner was the newspaper that James Bacon wrote his column for. Unfortunately, the paper went out of business in 1989, so there is no online archive.

Bacon had bit parts in all the original POTA films. He said that he wrote a column for each film describing his experience on the set. It would be great to get copies of those columns. I would love to read them and I'd bet many other fans would too.

As I've said before, orangutans have not evolved significantly over the past 15 million years!  But that doesn't mean they're backward or retarded in some way.  In fact, they're often cited as the smartest of the great apes, so there's much support for the fantasy idea in POTA that the orangs would be the first to emerge as the intellectual class.
Having said that, I think BATTLE's chronology is very problematic.  What was Mandemus doing during the time of CONQUEST?  And after the ape revolution, Virgil must have crammed a lot of reading into a very short period of time.

I find the mutants living and propagating under such radioactive conditions easier to believe.

On Thursday, News Corp. Dunno, guess POTA has been cleared of any wrongdoing. I always had faith in POTA.

I didn't say anything before because we were in the midst of the CONQUEST thing, but did everyone notice what it said on the Box Office Mojo POTA Franchise page on what PLANET has made when Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation?
          $197,030,400 ... and that's just US domestic!

I think this sum respresents what PLANET has made since it was released 44 years ago, but still.... no wonder Fox milks the APES like nothing else.

The entire franchise is has brought in nearly a billion, probably a lot more, and just from the movies.

          .html
The Ape Fairy gave me a preview of "Simian Scrolls" # 17 and it's another picture-packed ape-stravaganza. With POTA on the "Rise" there's plenty of new stuff to talk about, so there's interviews with BOOM!'s Darryl Gregory on the monthly comic (nicely illustrated with rarities) and Corrina Bechko & Gabriel Hardman, speaking no evil about their miniseries(es) "Betrayal" and "Exile". They of course will soon start their own monthly but they haven't talked about that (yet). An interesting factoid is that the orangutan Maurice in "Rise" is based on Bruno at the L.A. Zoo. Corrina has worked at the L.A. Zoo and knew Bruno personally. She gives her review of the performance. They also talk with Jeff Parker about BOOM!'s upcoming POTA annual in August. And there's a review of the "Rise" soundtrack to boot.
For the traditionalists there's an article about Mark Lenard by his daughter Catherine (part of an upcoming book?) as well as checking in with actors from "Battle" and the TV show (I have to leave some surprises). For the materialists there's articles about collecting Megos and Marvel POTA cover art (but you better hurry, there's a guy, literally a Guy, that's his last name, who already has almost half of them). And there's no rivalry as "Scrolls" celebrates 20 years of "Ape Chronicles", the first Apezine (did I coin a phrase? I'll have to have my lawyers look into that). A well-rounded package with the usual rare stuff that forces you to pick your eyeballs up off the floor and continue reading. Those who are familiar with "Simian Scrolls" know what I'm talking about. Those that don't, it's time to become familiar with it. If not, what, are you STOOOOPID?!
Congrats once again to the "Simian Scrolls" team and their contributors. Another delight.

Fascinating rare pics of Ham , the first chimp in space! Interestingly, he wasn't named "Ham" until after he landed. NASA didn't want people to get too comfortable with a named ape in case something went wrong. He was known by a number. "HAM" stood for Holloman Aerospace Medical Center.
