Subject: "Dawn of the POTA" vs. Marvel Super Team?!
.html
Marvel's super team movie "The Avengers" has become a global movie sensation this summer, racking up $ 1 BILLION, 439 MILLION and change worldwide so far (and it won't even open in Japan until August).

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avengers11.htm

Marvel has a "secret" movie scheded for May 16, 2014, the weekend before "Dawn of the POTA" is released. The announcement of what it is will be at Comic Con. BUT word on the street is that it will be "Guardians of the Galaxy", an alien super team. SUPER TEAM!

http://latino-review.com/2012/06/28/exclusive-marvels-2014-movie-revealed/

We're ruined! How is POTA supposed to stand up to that? As Paul (Virgil) Williams wrote, "We've only just begun" and now it's over! And one of the Guardians is named Nova. Bitter irony!!

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are mega, mega cool. There's an original version, drawn by the late, great, Gene the Dean Colan, that was actually reprinted on the UK Apes comic, if memory serves. There's also a later version with Bug from the Micronauts in that also had Cosmo the Russian speaking dog (insanely brilliant and written by Dan Abnett of Dark Horse Apes fame).Whatever version they use, it is Marvel and therefore, will be sublimely brilliant, and a nice appetiser for 2014's biggest movie.John,Scrolls.

Not that I'm complaining, but does this mean that their will no longer be any hardcopy print editions of Simian Scrolls? I can always print out my copy (and have done so for the first few issues), but I really liked the professional looking format and would gladly pay for it.

I guess this transition to digital is inevitable. I'm techno savvy, a computer engineer by trade in fact, but when it comes to my print matter, I want it in my hands.

Enough of a rant. Thanks for all the work to the regular SS crew and contributors.

I want to jump straight in and say a massive, massive thanks to James, Rich,Hunter and Kass for being to willing to help by hosting the Downloasd of SIMIAN SCROLLS#17--my experience of Ape fandom has been defined by the selfless, eager help and generosity of fans without thought of recompense.Hopefully, having a cyber-Scrolls will let it fly--it belongs to all Apes fans and everyone is welcome tp forward it on to anyone he might be a closet Apes fan.And that way, when they go to the dowload sites, they'll see a world of Apes resources they may otherwise have never seen.Spreading the word for each other and cross fertilizing will build Apedom.
Anything good about Scrolls#17 is down to Dave Ballard, who, frankly, performs miracles in getting Scrolls done.Anything bad about Scrolls is my fault.Apart from the picture of Terry. We tried, but, seriously, that was the BEST we could make it look.John,Scrolls.

2 Chimps at the Jane Godall Institute (South Africa) drag an academic human observer for a mile under a fence and into their enclave:

The article says some chimps there had been abused before being admitted to the institute. It also mentions that Chimps are 6 times stronger than humans.

Thanks for the download info, James. Just an FYI: most of the downloads at the Hasslein Books site are reading “insufficient data” when one goes to download them. They might want to be notified about this.  The other ones seem to be fine. Thanks again!

Humans and chimpanzees simply do not mix.  Gorillas and orangutans are actually much nicer animals.

2 Chimps at the Jane Godall Institute (South Africa) drag an academic human observer for a mile under a fence and into their enclave:

http://worldnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/29/12477253-report-us-student-fighting-for-life-after-chimps-attack-at-south-africas-jane-goodall-institute?lite

The article says some chimps there had been abused before being admitted to the institute. It also mentions that Chimps are 6 times stronger than humans.

Foreshadowing of what's to come in Dawn of the POTA?

No, Paul isn't in the "Chicago" musical (but James Naughton received a Tony for it). But the former Virgil will be IN Chicago at the Gene Siskel Film Center on Saturday for the 7:45 screening of his doc "Paul Wiliams Still Alive". Q & A will follow. Just a head's up.

Not in February of '68 they didn't, not before the movie had even opened up in most of the country.

I don't recall the Topps cards popping up in my elementary school schoolyard -- where I first became aware of them -- until late-April/early-May at the earliest.  It might not have been until mid to late May.

I watched CONQUEST last night -- because it was the June 29th "Anniversary" (and I watched the 'theatrical' version) -- and it really struck me how hard it is now to take seriously the idea that a plague that wipes out all pets would bring about the taking in of great apes as house pets and then as servants/slaves -- and in only eight years!

My point is... There's a lot in the APES series you just have to not think about and just go with, so the above from T is something that's just better left alone.  Trying to make sense of it can be a fun challenge, but it's basically pointless.  POTA is far-fetched SF, and that's that.

Mandemus says at the end of Battle that he lived in the Ape City armory for 27 years, so it is at least that long since the end of Conquest. Also, I believe in the script for Battle that Virgil is described as a young ape in his early 20s; so it is plausable that Mandemus was Virgil's teacher when he was a boy.

As far as the origin of Mandemus, one theory is at the link I previously posted: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/ACC/ACC6.gif.

Assuming that as a kid you'd collected the 44th card of a set to a movie you hadn't even seen yet!!!!!

Gee, I wonder how many kids in 1968 did that?  Those poor dumb kids!  They ruined the movie for themselves!

Just how many years is BATTLE supposed to take place after the events of CONQUEST?  I've always thought it was only supposed to be like thirteen years.  Ceasar and Lisa don't seem 27 years older, though chimp years don't match exactly with human years, and their child, Cornelius, is supposed to be how old?

I want to let everyone know that I bought the new "Lancelot Link" DVD and that it has great transfers of the episodes, complete, and a really interesting documentary on the making of the show hosted by the producer.  In it, he shows you where the chimp that played Lance now lives.  He was only five years old when he starred in the show.  He's now nearly fifty, and lives in a wildlife preserve in California.  I've attached a scan of a card that comes will the set telling you about it, and later I'll post a picture of Lance today from the documentary.  I remember an article in LIFE back in 1970 that said that this chimp was used as a model for John Chambers when he was doing APES (must have been the one Bill Creber talks about bringing in).

Anyway, if you want to know more for now got to:

It's never directly stated in the script. Mendez says that there has been 12 years of peace, but doesn't say how many years of war there was preceding it. Mandemus says at that he had lived in the Ape City armory for 27 years. Caesar was 18 in Conquest, so he'd be 46 in Battle if the 27 year period is correct. The age of Cornelius is irrelevant since it was never said how long after Conquest he was born.

POTA comics panel at Comic-Con on July 14th. I'd go, if I liked the life of a sardine. Plus prices are way out of line.
Daryl Gregory will be part of it, suggesting the current monthly comic will continue. I think it will be two monthlies now; "POTA" and "POTA: Cataclysm".
But we'll get our answers soon. Probably someone will cover it.

Yeah, but this is all kind of silly, because we're talking in human years here.  A chimpanzee male is reaches sexual maturity by the age of seven or eight years, so a Caesar in the original series, in "Conquest," at eighteen years of age, is a very mature adult.  At 46, he's in his old age, like the chimp that played Lancelot Link is now (photos to come, by the way).

I believe this is the kind of thing in the universe of the original APES series that it's better not to dwell on too much.

Rich Handley's "Timeline" book places "Battle" in 2020 (I think Marvel established that). Marvel did a story called "Quest For the POTA" that was between the two movies. According to Rich, the promotional newspaper put out to promote "Battle" mentioned Cornelius' age as 10.

Should the titles "Rise of the POTA" and it's sequel "Dawn of the POTA" be reversed? Obviously it's too late to do anything but the first movie seems more like a "dawn"; the apes are arriving on the scene. The sequel will be more of a "rise" as the apes take their place at the top. Plus, Paul Dehn's original title for "Battle" was "Rise of the POTA" (per Eric Greene in the "Battle" blu-ray doc) and this sequel will probably tread the same issues as "Battle" (how do the apes treat their former superiors?). Would've been cool to use Dehn's original title (though they did anyway). So I think it would've been better if the titles had been switched. But what's in a name?

I guess you could say Mark Wahlberg talking to the animals is box office gold. The box office shocker of the weekend is that his teddy bear comedy "Ted" opened to $54 million in the U.S. this weekend (the same amount "Rise" opened to, give or take a few $100 thous) and is his second best opening ever (behind POTA2001, which opened to $68 million). 11 years after POTA2001 Wahlly has shown he has staying power as a movie star and is a heck of a producer, too. He even came clean and admitted POTA2001 wasn't all it could have been:

      http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2011/12/29/mark-wahlberg-planet-of-the-apes-tim-burton/

What's next for him? Getting his high school diploma. No, really. Good for him. Kind of an interesting contrast with the other recent POTA star James Franco, who has how many college degrees? But then, Franco played a scientist and Wahlberg played a dude who chased his monkey across time and space.

Wyatt says at the end of his commentary, and the end of the movie, of course, that the "rise" in RISE is when the apes literally all stand erect at once.  That's the "rise of the planet of the apes."
I think that for budgetary reasons, we're going to get a very limited apes vs. humans war in the next movie.  I'm actually more curious now as to what the third film will be about?  Possibly a war among the apes?

The age of Cornelius is irrelevant since it was never said how long after Conquest he was born.

      PLANET OF THE APES
Go figure that unheralded director Rupert Wyatt delivered what Tim Burton couldn't: an "Apes" flick that genuinely shook things up. Last year's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" incorporated contemporary touches such as genetic engineering ethics and pandemic fears into a story that compellingly framed the franchise's mythology. (There had been prequels back in the '70s, but they were thin, awkwardly retrofitted stuff that's barely remembered.) Fox recently announced that the evolutionary upheaval will continue in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," due in May 2014.

Hear that everybody, about the "prequels back in the '70s"?  OK, then,,, how about some rebuttals?  Anyone?

Watched this doc last night. Just a terrific film. Complain all you want about POTA2001 but it was thanks to it's development that we got "Behind" and it's just in time interviews with many who are no longer with us. Eric Greene is a lucky dog to have been a part of it, but I think he does a good job of providing context.
Fox is going to need some extras to resell the original films if the current films take off. As it happened, I got a good deal on the "Full Disclosure" blu-ray edition of "Apocalypse Now" this weekend. It includes an HD version of the 1990 doc "Hearts of Darkness", which looks great. I would love to see "Behind" get this treatment. Fox has gone to the "Behind" well so many times that I think it's time. There's reportedly a newly restored version of POTA1968 that hasn't been released yet. If they released it in 2014 with an HD version of "Behind" I would be a happy camper.
But we've also got the 50th anniversary of the original in 6 years (or the 50th anniversary of the book next year if Fox cares to sellabrate it). Most of the people who participated in "Behind" are gone but their images and their words live on (not unlike Caesar's parents). A special edition of "Behind" was released with 2 hours of the roddy interview. Obviously there are plenty of unmined interviews for "Behind" that could be used in future releases. Two hours of Kim Hunter? Heston? Montalban? Joe Russo has plenty of audio stuff from his "Revisited" book that could be incorporated. There's plenty of stuff to work with despite the influence of Father Time. The idea makes me drool (sorry, this is embarrassing; anyone have a Kleenex?). Let's rock, Fox!

Another clueless someone talking about "Apes" as if they know about it. "Escape" and "Conquest" are # 2 and 3 in my estimation of the originals. Wouldn't call them "thin" or "awkwardly retrofitted" (if you use the alternate timeline theory).

Subject: Chimp muscles are longer, "thus stronger", but that means they can't
      .html
An interesting point from the following article (which I include in its entirety since Yahoo news articles tend to disappear promptly) is that:

Chimp muscles are longer, "thus stronger" than those of humans, but that also means that they can't swim... Remember how POTA2001 touched upon their fear of water? I wonder why Ape City in POTA1968 was so close to a lake, though.

I also wonder why such longer muscles mean they can't swim even as they're nevertheless stronger. Might anyone understand this? Anyhow, here's the new article (which suggests that Dawn could have some Thade-like fight scenes)

Chimpanzees vs. Humans: Sizing Up Their Strength
By LARA SALAHI | Good Morning America – 9 hours ago

      Email
      Print
The mauling of Texas graduate student Andrew Oberle by two chimpanzees at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden in South Africa Thursday was a reminder that in strength, size might not matter.
Chimpanzees are considered the closest living relative of humans, sharing 95 to 98 percent of the same DNA, according to the Jane Goodall Institute in Washington, D.C., a separate entity from the facility in South Africa.
But in no way do humans compare with a chimps' sheer strength and the few percentage points in which the two differ are extreme, many experts say.
"It's the closest thing we know to human warfare" when a chimp is provoked, said Steve Ross, director of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study of Conservation of Apes at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
"Chimps are incredibly strong and fast so humans are easily overpowered."
Indeed, chimpanzees have been shown to be about four times as strong as humans comparable in size, according to evolutionary biologist Alan Walker, formerly of Pennsylvania State University.
Research suggests the difference in strength between the two lies in the muscle performance.
In chimps, the muscles closest to the bones -- those deemed to be the source of strength of both chimps and humans – are much longer and more intense, so a chimp is able to generate more power using the same range of motion, Ross of the Lester Fisher Center said.
The skeletal muscle fibers are much longer and denser, so they can generate more power in the same range of motion.
Also, unlike humans, chimpanzees have less control over their muscles. As a result, sometimes chimps use more of their muscle strength than necessary, according to Walker's theory, published 2009 in the journal Current Anthropology.
Such physical lack of control can potentially lead some chimps to become more aggressive when physical. In Thursday's case, however, an internal investigation by the Jane Goodall Institute near Johannesburg showed that the chimps might not have intended to be malicious, Eugene Cussons, director of the institute, told "Good Morning America" today.
The two chimps saw Oberle's crossing the fence into the chimps' space as a violation of their territory, prompting them to take action, Cussons said.
"They have no anger," Cussons said of the chimps. "This is why we come to the conclusion, as far as our expertise goes, that it was a territorial defense. They directed the violence towards Andrew whom they feel was infringing on their territory."
Chimpanzees have a wide range of emotions and they are similar to what humans experience, yet they are known to have erratic and unpredictable impulses, Ross said. The emotional impulses also play a role in how aggressive they can become, he said.
"They can adapt very well to their environment but that doesn't preclude that they are territorial and they are violent and wild animals first," Ross said. "There's an aggression toward individuals that are not in their group."
But chimps are often seen as friendly and cute animals because many facilities use preventive measures to prevent the aggression, he said.
Indeed, the same muscles that are considered to be the source of a chimp's strength can also be seen as a detriment for the animal.
The lengthy muscle fibers mean chimps and other great apes can't swim, Ross said. To protect humans, many zoos create water barriers around the chimps' area so they cannot physically approach, Ross said.
While chimps are most often seen in a zoo environment or in facilities working hand in hand with humans, they are inherently wild and aggressive animals so both trained and untrained individuals should never let their guard down, he added.
"There's never a safe time to be in the same place as a chimp," Ross said. "The natural tendency of chimpanzees is one of aggression and there's always a need among them to demonstrate power and territory."

It IS good and it's hard to imagine any self-respecting POTA collection without it. The five part documentary spread across the blu rays also has it's moments with some rare photos etc and I hope that someday someone is able to splice all the parts together, which would make for an interesting companion piece.

Factor in the material on Hunter's 'rarities' discs, Burton's flop, RISE and DAWN, and there's obviously a wealth of material just waiting to be mined for a 're-imagined', high definition 'Behind the POTA'.

Last year when the comic came out, I had expected more interest in from hardcore fans. But here and in other Yahoo groups, as well as places like Forum of the Apes, IMBD, etc. There was a remarkable lack of interest in the comic. From those that I have discussed this with the consensus seems to be that while it is an excellent comic, it's just not a good POTA story. So while the reviews are good, those are from people who are comic fans, and not necessarily POTA fans.

However, the Betrayal and Exile miniseries have been praised as a good comic and by fans as good POTA stories. Which is probably why they will be the basis of second monthly comic in the fall.

Behind is included on the POTA blu-ray in special features. Isn't that an HD version?

Fox had been planning a new POTA movie all through the '90's, with high profile guys like Oliver Stone and James Cameron. In fact, Cameron was their golden boy, having just released the all-time biggest hit "Titanic" right before "Behind" hit, and he was working on POTA at the time. Burton was nowhere to be seen at that point but the POTA momentum had been there for a while. Is there a reason Fox chose to "sellabrate" the 30th anniversary of POTA instead of the 25th or the 20th? I think because they thought the new movie was imminent and it was a good way to bring the public up to speed. It's possible "Behind" still would've been made if nothing was going on with POTA but I have a feeling it wouldn't have.
And then all the 40th anniversary stuff happened when "Rise" was in development. Coincidence, huh? We don't live in that kind of a world, Thelma!

Complain all you want about POTA2001 but it was thanks to it's development that we got "Behind"
What? BEHIND came out in mid-1998!

More scans have been up loaded into the Veetus folder.

An article from the LA Times by Joyce Haber about becoming an ape in Conquest. A profile of Arthur Jacobs from a Boston paper in 1972. And an item from a James Bacon column.

Should have the rest done tomorrow.

Earlier I brought up that "Dawn of the POTA" was screwed because it was going up against a Marvel super hero team (a la "The Avengers", which tore the box office a new one this summer). I was kidding, of course. A good POTA movie can take on all comers (if it's good). Anyway, it's a moot point since Marvel has moved their "untitled" secret project to August, long after "Dawn" has broken (unless "Dawn" is moved). What exactly Marvel has cooking for Summer 2014 won't be officially revealed until Comic-Con but the assumed title is "Guardians of the Galaxy".

In my world, there will always be plenty of room for Apes and Marvel--went to see The Amazing Spider-Man last night---Toby who!!??---and it re-affirmed my feeling that DAWN needs to be a 3D movie.Sci Fi Now mag this month has a feature on 'Profound Movies-The 15 Most Mind Blowing Films in Sci Fi'.Apes is at #13 ,with Brazil at #1 and Blade Runner #15.No Star Wars/Trek, proving, yet again, that Apes is the bigger franchise.John, Scrolls.
