I was kidding, of course. A good POTA movie can take on all comers (if it's good). Anyway, it's a moot point since Marvel has moved their "untitled" secret project to August, long after "Dawn" has broken (unless "Dawn" is moved). What exactly Marvel has cooking for Summer 2014 won't be officially revealed until Comic-Con but the assumed title is "Guardians of the Galaxy". > > http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/disney-announces-release-date-change-for-untitled-marvel-film/ >

.htmlThe last group of scans provided by Jeff have been uploaded. They include a correspondance between Arthur Jacobs and the William Morris Agency from Sept. 1965; two internal Apjac status reports, one from December 1963 and the other from January 1972. Interestingly the one from 1972 lists Conquest's release date as 6/29/72.
Once again, thanks to Jeff for providing these.

Here's an interview by the creator of the famed
"Ain't It Cool" website with the maker of an independent film about sci-fi in
the '70's. The movie is called "5-25-77", referring to the release date of "Star
Wars" when science fiction theoretically became cool to Joe Public (kind of like
POTA is now with "Rise"). In the clips for the film watch for "Requiem For the
POTA" and also the director mentions POTA and there's two of those great Mondo
POTA posters in the background during the interview. Ain't it cool?

Apes will play, wade, and bathe in the water. Some even dog paddle, but actually swimming is not physically "possible"
From "Tarzan, My Father" by Johnny Weismuller, Jr. (2002):
As Dad remembered it, they were shooting some scenes in a pond near the Santa Anita racetrack. He was rowing a canoe to the other side of the pond, and Cheeta was perched near the bow. When they came close to shore, Cheeta mistook the green algae near the bank for solid ground. The next thing Dad knew, the chimp's head was a couple feet under water, and his hairy arms were desperately reaching for the sky. A few seconds later, Cheeta sank completely, and the only sign left of him was a big air bubble. Dad pulled the canoe alongside the bubble, reached down, grabbed the chimp by the scruff of his neck, and pulled him into the boat. He said that fifty pounds of monkey clung to him like a wet rag for the next hour and a half, and from that day on Cheeta and "Tarzan" were inseparable.
There were many chimpanzees named Cheeta during the sixteen years of Tarzan films, but there was really only one as far as Dad was concerned, and that was his "swimming buddy." After "aquatic" Cheeta retired to the Los Angeles Zoo, my father went often to visit him. He said that when Cheeta died it was almost like losing a son.

I know apes drown. Not the point I was making.
If you make a special mask and trained them
from birth not to be afraid of water, I'm sure
they could swim. Not that they would
naturally. Just that they could do it.

From "Tarzan, My Father" by Johnny Weismuller, Jr.
(2002):
As Dad remembered it, they were shooting some scenes in a pond
near the Santa Anita racetrack. He was rowing a canoe to the other side
of the pond, and Cheeta was perched near the bow. When they came close
to shore, Cheeta mistook the green algae near the bank for solid ground.
The next thing Dad knew, the chimp's head was a couple feet under water, and
his hairy arms were desperately reaching for the sky. A few seconds
later, Cheeta sank completely, and the only sign left of him was a big air
bubble. Dad pulled the canoe alongside the bubble, reached down, grabbed
the chimp by the scruff of his neck, and pulled him into the boat. He
said that fifty pounds of monkey clung to him like a wet rag for the next hour
and a half, and from that day on Cheeta and "Tarzan" were
inseparable.
There were many chimpanzees named Cheeta during the sixteen years
of Tarzan films, but there was really only one as far as Dad was concerned,
and that was his "swimming buddy." After "aquatic" Cheeta retired to the
Los Angeles Zoo, my father went often to visit him. He said that when
Cheeta died it was almost like losing a son.

It's strange that there are so few working actors
and yet, because of shooting schedules, some of
them never meet even though they appeared in the

Gregory is slated to be at the Comic-Con POTA

on.
The main audience for comic books is comic book

.htmlThere's a terrific book about chimpanzees and their differences from humans called "Almost Chimpanzee" (a play on the idea that chimps are "almost human").
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/10/AR2010091002923.html"
In it the idea that chimps can't swim is brought up and the closest they get to it is that no one has taught a chimp to swim. Humans have to be taught to swim. Chimps can wade and even cross water up to their necks in zoos. We've taught them to ride bikes and skateboards and do other things they don't do in nature.
The author interviews Jo Fritz, who was hired by a family in the 1970's to teach their pet chimp Casey to swim. Casey wanted to join them in the pool. Fritz spent two 90 minute sessions trying to teach him but couldn't.
Fritz: "He wasn't terrorized of the water. He would laugh and splash people. But each time we would gently push the float out from underneath him, he'd just go down. There was never any conception that went through his mind that he could hold his head above water and dog paddle or that he could even try. He was at the age to learn if one was going to learn. Now hear me: I taught a 5 year old chimp to knit. If you can teach a 5 year old to knit, to take the stitch off the needle and put it on another needle, don't you think if their life was threatened by drowning they'd at least dog paddle? Casey didn't. And it has nothing to do with intelligence".

But when a publishing company goes to the expense of buying a license for a franchise like POTA or Star Trek or Star Wars, there has to be some expectation to attract hardcore fans of that franchise. Otherwise why bother of the expense and legal hassle of the license. Why not just create something original that they would own outright if they just wanted to appeal to comic book fans only.

.htmlI think that's the point of this thread. The "comic book fans" seem to like the Gregory comic; the general POTA fans don't and prefer the "Betrayal" team. I'm just saying I don't think there's a lot of general POTA fans who visit comic book shops to buy POTA comics who wouldn't be there otherwise. Few POTA fans even buy the fanzines. Were sales of the Gregory comic hurt because general POTA fans didn't like it? I don't think it's a forgone conclusion. "Comic book fans" seem to like bigger flights of fancy and letting artists do their thing, and get less caught up on continuity and "canon" (superheroes are reinvented all the time).
Exhibit A is our own John Roche, who is a comic book guy and loved the Gregory comics. Personally, I prefer the Hardman/Bechko stuff but I enjoyed the Gregory stuff for what it is. I think a year and a half of the same writer & artist every month is plenty and I like seeing it changed up. Let H & B do it monthly for awhile and Gregory can do miniseries and it keeps it fresh.
I'm one of those guys who doesn't visit comic book shops but I will for a POTA title. But how many POTA fans do that? I still say the main audience is comic book fans and they seemed to like the Gregory book. But the G & H books got raves too. There's just not enough info on whether the Gregory book was a "flop".

Why would anyone want to teach chimpanzees to swim in the first place? This whole thing is ridiculous. What's the end goal? A chimp frogman navy?

The basic point is that no one has tried to teach apes to swim with the regularity that they've been taught sign language or riding a bike. If there was a big effort to teach apes to swim, would they? Who knows?
That "Almost Chimpanzee" book mentioned the stock answer is that apes don't have enough fat but it's pointed out some of the best human swimmers have less fat. So whether or not apes could swim is an unanswered question. <.html

.htmlI agree that the main audience for comic books is existing comic book fans--it's possibly a question of exposure. In the early 80s the direct market and specialy shops seemed the way forward, but I don't think anybody thought about how people would even KNOW about the comics if they weren't on shelves in ordinary shops. The Buffy and Firefly comics from the Whedon-verse may be one small exception to the rule where new readers discovered comics, but if even Batman,Star Trek and, for goodness' sake,Star Wars can't really sell in big numbers any more, then it's no surprise if other franchises have a tough time.Just one reason why it's good to buy the Apes comic and tell a friend.John, Scrolls.

How do you know that the earth wouldn't be livable for very long if the moon blew up? I believe that although it wouldn't be very pleasant for a very long time, especially if there was a massive bombardment of debris, life on earth would still go on. Most of the large mammals, including men and apes, unless they could find a deep enough hole to hide in, would probably go extinct, but life in the deep oceans would still be there, and evolution would continue and for many millions of years yet. And if the moon blew up in such a way that most of the debris shot out into space and then formed a ring of debris around the earth, then that could explain the "strange luminosity at night."
Also, at the end of BENEATH, the earth doesn't blow up -- it's atmosphere explodes, but the planet goes on, and probably with most of its oceans still intact. What the future of such a world would be, I don't know, but with the oceans still there, there's a chance that over time the atmosphere could probably make a come back, though by then our star would have shrunk to a white dwarf.
