Dr. Strangelove is an awesome movie.
But seriously, no atomic man-made war is going to do to the planet what's seen in the first two APES movies. There had to have been something worse that happened, but it's wildly implausible Science Fiction, so I think it's a little ridiculous to try and make too much sense of it.
PLANET has one astronaut say "and yet there's no moon" and then later Cornelius mentions the tides. Well, somebody goofed, that's all there is to it.

This takes the edge off of the world blowing up in "Beneath" since Earth wouldn't have been livable for very long with no moon anyway. It actually gives "Beneath" a happy ending because everyone goes quickly and doesn't have to suffer a slow end. I never thought "Beneath" would be "the feel good movie" of 1970.
How do you know that the earth wouldn't be livable for very long if the moon blew up? I believe that although it wouldn't be very pleasant for a very long time, especially if there was a massive bombardment of debris, life on earth would still go on. Most of the large mammals, including men and apes, unless they could find a deep enough hole to hide in, would probably go extinct, but life in the deep oceans would still be there, and evolution would continue and for many millions of years yet. And if the moon blew up in such a way that most of the debris shot out into space and then formed a ring of debris around the earth, then that could explain the "strange luminosity at night."
Also, at the end of BENEATH, the earth doesn't blow up -- it's atmosphere explodes, but the planet goes on, and probably with most of its oceans still intact. What the future of such a world would be, I don't know, but with the oceans still there, there's a chance that over time the atmosphere could probably make a come back, though by then our star would have shrunk to a white dwarf.

Koba is just portrayed as a long time lab veteran
("This guy's seen the inside of a lot of labs"). So it looks like he's been
badly treated at some of them. Plus he's a bonobo.
Has an awesome look to him. If he's the villain
in the sequel I could dig it.

.htmlI think it's been said before, but the 'lack' of a visible Moon is an essential plot device--otherwise, the astronauts would KNOW they're on Earth from the get go,as they'd clearly recognise that big lump of cheese smiling down on them.Personally, I take Dodge's comment about 'no moon' to mean that he's assuming we're in a non-visible phase of the planet's Moon, having guessed, from tide marks, that there is a moon up there.John, Scrolls.

>

The story out of Vegas has really enraged me. The fact that people still keep chimps as pets is almost unbelievable, and it disgusts me that I live in a country where every so often some chimp is shot to death.
Why can't people just leave these animals alone?

Koba is just portrayed as a long time lab veteran ("This guy's seen the inside of a lot of labs"). So it looks like he's been badly treated at some of them. Plus he's a bonobo.
Has an awesome look to him. If he's the villain in the sequel I could dig it.

.html This is a sad day for POTA fans. Richard Zanuck has died. He's the studio exec who greenlighted the original POTA when no one else would. And he produced POTA2001, the start of a long relationship with Tim Burton. He was the husband of Linda Harrison and probably the reason she played Nova. Beyond that, he produced "Jaws", one of my favorite movies.
I will say he seemed to have a lot of ego during the time of POTA2001. He acted like he made it possible and downplayed Arthur Jacobs' almost twisting his arm to make it. POTA2001 showed he didn't really "get it". But that's not what we're here to dwell on. Nobody "got it" in the mid-'60's but Zanuck took a chance on POTA. He's also credited with the end of "Beneath". There's no two ways about it, Richard Zanuck and POTA are linked forever. And whatever the history, he seemed like a good guy who loved movies and did his part to bring them to us.

.htmlZanuck wasn't involved in "Rise". But he did seem to realize the error of POTA2001's ways and wanted to do a sequel and "get the story right". I think he was proud with how POTA has lasted and wanted to do right by it (but didn't know how). I remember Fox exec Tom Rothman mentioning the development of "Rise" on a Fox Movie Channel thingy and said he was going to personally tell Zanuck about it. So Zanuck seems to have kept an interest in POTA and hopefully he saw "Rise" and heard all the acclaim it got and realized it was in good hands before he died.

I have to seriously question the true sincerity of that Zanuck letter. He writes that FANTASTIC VOYAGE has created "an adventure of astonishing suspense and beauty." That reads to me like hyperbole. I think the truth is probably that the studio couldn't afford anything less than a hit with what they'd invested in this movie, and Zanuch felt he needed to do something extra to insure a return. Note that the advertisement appeared just four days after it opened. Could it be it wasn't making enough as they had hoped?
I have a book on Fox during this period that shows that FANTASTIC VOYAGE actually underperformed at the box office in 1966. VOYAGE needed to make $9,400,000 in film rentals in order to breakeven. It only made $8,880,000 in ultimate film rentals, or 94.4% of what it needed to make to breakeven. (Note: we're talking film rentals here, not grosses.)
By comparison, two years later, PLANET OF THE APES needed $12,850,000 in rentals to breakeven. It made $20,825,000 in rentals, or 162.1% of what it needed to breakeven.
But if you think that's something, get a load of this -- and this is from the book "The Fox That Got Away," by the way -- in 1967, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS needed $9,700,000 in rentals to breakeven. It made $22,925,000 in rentals, or 236.3% of that need to breakeven. A very profitable movie indeed.
The book doesn't give the numbers for the last three APES movies, because they were made after the Zanucks lost the studio (the fox that got away), but the numbers for BENEATH are this: $8,100,000 to breakeven, $13,825,000 in rentals, a return of 170.7% to breakeven. BENEATH was a more profitable picture than PLANET, which is why we got another sequel.
But if you think that's something listen to this about the most profitable picture for Fox in 1970, M*A*S*H. It needed to only make $6,550,000 in rentals to breakeven. It made $31,225,000 in rentals or 476.7% of what was needed to breakeven. Amazing! It did better than PATTON.

Profitability is a slippery slope. Blair Witch was very profitable
too.
Patton had to have a big budget. M*A*S*H only needed a couple
of old choppers, jeeps and a few tents. That's chump change
in Hollywood. The actors cost more. But on the TV show,
Wayne Rodger walked because he was making more in
real estate than he was on the show. For Beneath the
location was already built and paid for. Same set as
M*A*S*H too. It's a shame they tore it down with
about as much thought as striking those tents.

They redressed two HELLO DOLLY! sets, a restaurant became the cathedral, and an early Grand Central Station became a two-thousand-year-old ruin of the same, and they still had the "Ape Town" (as Fox called it) standing at the ranch, and I believe the underground tunnel was redressed from a "sewer pipe" set from the "Land of the Giants" TV show. That same "pipe" would be redressed again for CONQUEST and finally for THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, where it was stood on its end and became the "air shaft" that Roddy McDowall's character died in. <.html

.htmlWow, they sure were adaptive. Nowadays I guess they'd just use CGI graphics technology, which explains why the budget for Rise was lower than POTA 2001 despite inflation.
I was going to guess that a Batman Batcave scene might have been recycled for Beneath, but I don't know how much Warner Bros. and Fox might have shared. (Although admittedly I'm not sure that Warner Bros. even owned the franchise at that time).
At any rate, thanks from Houston for the info. :-)

.html Most of "Rise" was on real locations, except of course for the Golden Gate Bridge (which doesn't allow filming even if they wanted to). They even went down to San Francisco to film some stuff (and Hawaii for Africa) even though the production was centered in Vancouver.
Fox made the "Batman" TV show and some of it's guest stars is a who's who of POTA. Warner Bros. didn't own the copyright but they do now, making DVDs of the show complicated (Fox and Warners would have to work together to release it).

"Rise of the POTA" was up for 5 Saturn Awards and
won 3: Best Science Fiction Film, Best Supporting Actor - Andy Serkis, and Best
FX.
Of the other "Rise" catagories, Best
Director went to J.J. Abrams for "Super 8" and Best Script went to "Take
Shelter".
Not a bad showing; "Rise" and "Super 8"
were the film leaders with 3 wins each. Let's see if someone got a "Dawn of the
POTA" update from the gang.

I would think Andy's win is important. Earlier
this year there was controversy whether Andy would get an Oscar nomination and
here he's won. A motion capture performance, winning over actors like Alan
Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, Tom Hiddleston and Stanley Tucci. How
important are the Saturn Awards? Well, the major awards like the Oscars tend to
ignore genre films so I'd say they are the Oscars for science fiction films.
It'll be interesting to see if all the people
hoping Andy would get an Oscar nomination will pick up on this.

They also showed a commercial for an upcoming TV show called "Animal Practice", which features a monkey named Rizzo. They wanted to call him Dr. Zauis but Fox nixed the idea. If it was a hit it might have been good publicity. <.html
