> Got the POTA annual the other day and Boom! has done a really good job once again. The annual contains 4 short or mini stories, each only 8 pages long. Eight pages is very short for a story (for perspective Marvel's Terror and other POTA comic series ran between 20 and 25 pages per issue) but Boom! pulls it off for the most part. Three of the 4 stories are good to excellent.
>
> The lead off story, 'First and Last Days' is unfortunately the turkey of the lot. The plot is really thin and has a very weak ending. While it's got a bit of a 'Lesson from the Lawgiver' vibe to it, the less said about this story the better.
>
> The second story shows what a good writer can do with a limited number of pages. Written by Corinna Bechko, who co-wrote the excellent Betrayal and Exile series, 'A Boy and His Human' has a lot of heart. It has a well developed main character and doesn't make the mistake of taking itself too seriously as 'First and Last Days' does.
>
> Story number three, 'Old New World' by Jeff Parker, is almost as good as 'A Boy and His Human' and is miles ahead of 'First and Last Days'. It has an interesting concept which is well executed. Hope to see more POTA stories from Mr. Parker in the future.
>
> Boom! saved the best for last with 'The Scroll'. Written by Gabriel Hardman, the other co-writer of Betrayal and Exile, this story is the one that most captures the spirit of the original POTA. It's a great, pithy read. This shows just how good a POTA comic can be when written by a good writer who is a real POTA fan. Can't wait for the new Cataclysm comic series in September.
>
> With the current movies (Rise and Dawn) going in its own direction, in its own POTA universe; the Boom! comics are really the only source of stories from the classic POTA universe. Thankfully it seems to be in good hands with Ms. Bechko and Mr. Hardman.

I originally thought I'd have to order this from the UK....
but it turned out I didn't, so I got it. Well worth the money, but be warned: The translation is the British one, where the French is literally translated into British English, hence, a flashlight in the US version becomes a "torch," and apes are constantly referred to as monkeys. Cornelius and Zira would be quite offended, but otherwise I'm glad I bought it.
Too bad Roddy McDowall didn't record such an effort whilst (Oh, that British!) he was still alive.

| Subject: casting ideas for "Dawn of the POTA" |
|
.html So, the "Dawn of the POTA" script is still a work in progress and who knows where it will land. Will James Franco, Frieda Pinto or Brian Cox return? I dunno, but Fox seemed quick to lock down Andy Serkis, and for a terrific salary. So I don't hold out much hope for the human characters, who would presumably get a pay raise for returning to a successful franchise. The human characters weren't exactly celebrated from "Rise". The only actor to say anything was Frieda Pinto, who said she hadn't heard anything but would love to return.
I'll just say I would love to see the original actors return and expand on their characters. But I could see where budget would suggest casting new human characters, and that's where I'm here to help. As we know, there were many references in "Rise" to the original POTA movies, and they rubbed some fans the wrong way. So how about some casting that I think POTA fans would enjoy and which would be more subtle than movie quotes?
Jackie Earle Haley: He, of course played Kraik in "The Legacy" episode of the POTA TV show. I would love to see him return to the POTA universe 40 years later. This is not pie in the sky. He's had an incredible time the last few years, getting an Oscar nomination, working for directors like Scorsese, Spielberg and, yes, Burton. Come on, his recent casting is for the "Robocop" remake. It's time for Jackie to come home. If it's possible, he should return to the POTA.
Katee Sackhoff: Who? She played Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the recent "Battlestar Galactica". I LOVE that series and have it on blu-ray. But that's not what I'm talking about. The main creative force on that series (at least from the writing) was Ronald D. Moore, who after a decade working on "Star Trek" episodes, was ready for the anti-"Trek". Of course, in the '60's, POTA was the anti-Trek. As it turns out, Moore is a big POTA fan and sprinkled POTA refs in his "Battlestar". But mainly, in the episode "Sometimes A Great Notion", "Starbuck" is referred to as the "Harbinger of Death", a direct POTA reference when she discovers >CENSORED!< . And when she's looking for her destiny in the same episode, she's told, "You may not like what you find". So, come on! If the "Harbinger of Death" has no place in the new POTA movies, then there is no God. Did I say that?
Both of those are not just stunt casting. I have been blown away by their acting and I'm sure if they did a role in "Dawn of the POTA" they would rock. Besides that, I think it would be fun if they were cast. So those are my ideas. It would be interesting to hear yours (let's be realistic; no Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis). <.html

"Oh!...The Real Deal!" he said. Class act.

Brad Pitt is said to have stated PLANET is his favorite movie (at least when he was a kid). Fox should have gotten him instead of Franco, but Pitt would have cost too much.
Hey, isn't it about time for some news from Fox on how this project is progressing? I still expect another writer to be brought in, but I also expect production start news by at least November. I just wonder if this is still on track for a May 2014 release?

Well, I've always assumed Taylor's flight was the first of its kind, though the absurdity of it leaving in 1972 really started to sink in with me about... oh...1972! Hard to imagine now that there would have been anything before then.
In the Boulle novel, Professor Antelle's interstellar mission is called by Merou "the first interstellar flight," and "the most ambitious (project) that had ever been concieved on Earth."
I think the filmmakers had that same idea in mind with the movie adaptation, but, of course, it's not directly stated, though there seems no indication from the astronauts' dialogue that they're not the first of their kind in this respect.

<.html

Between the two of them there's gotta be some POTA DNA somewhere. "John Carter" was perhaps the granddaddy of the "space opera". "Tarzan" was an early examination of the relationship between Man and Ape (Eric Greene considers it POTA in reverse).
Goodall has a full plate and it's rare for her to talk about fictional characters. But Tarzan is what inspired her to go to Africa in the first place and shows the importance of fiction in our lives. As a kid she was also a fan of the "Dr. Dolittle" books. Of course, Arthur Jacobs brought that to cinemas at the same time as POTA.

.html
Over the years we've had many discussions on what everyone's favorite scenes are in the POTA films and TV series. There is even a page with clips in the group website: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/GreatestMoments.htm.
However, there are some scenes that have me hitting the Fast Forward button whenever they come on the screen. Scenes that I just want to get past for various reasons to get to the good stuff. These would be my least favorite scenes. My top five are:
- Beneath: Brent trying to drown Nova in the fountain - I find this scene gratuitously violent. There is no dramatic purpose for it. The later scene during the interrogation where the mutants force Brent to strangle Nova did have a dramatic purpose and probably would have had more impact without the earlier scene had the audience not already known the mutants were capable of mind control.
- Beneath: Taylor fighting Brent - I have always disliked this scene. After everything we've been through with these characters to have them finally meet and then be forced to fight each other. Again it doesn't seem to have a dramatic purpose and it goes on way too long.
- Conquest: Caesar on the Shock Table - Roddy gives one hell of a performance in this scene. However, because his performance is so good, it is just too intense and violent.
- Battle: Aldo kills Cornelius - I don't like violence against children. The scene goes on too long. And Bobby Porter's poor performance really doesn't invoke much sympathy for little Cornelius.
- Battle: Ape had killed Ape - Having all the Apes chanting this seems fairly juvenile. Then Caesar chasing Aldo up a tree goes on far too long.
Well those are my least favorite scenes. What are everyone else's? Or maybe a better question would be what scenes would you change and how would you change it?

Nice topic. I don't have a problem with some of the ones you mention except the last. Yeah, I do cringe with the chanting, and the quip at the end by MacDonald deserves some ape to hit him over the head.
Mine would be the need for a better gorilla suit in Escape. An ice cream van playing its music to join the school bus and assorted vehicles in Battle (I joke, but if you have a school bus, why just stop there?). Oh, and I know that they were on a tight budget, but blowing up the same tree in Battle got a bit old after the third attempt.

Doesn't sound like you like mutant mind control.
I don't mind the ones you mention. To me that stuff is what gives POTA it's
edge.
I've watched "Conquest" with Natalie Trundy and
she literally had to leave the room during the shock table sequence. And she was
there during the making of the movie.
I'd say the worst thing for me is the masks
during Ursus' "Beneath" speech, but the speech itself is good so I can't say
skip the scene. These days I just skip to my favorite scenes instead of skipping
over bad scenes. If I had to say skip a scene it would be the steam room scene
in "Beneath". It just looks like camp. Apes have too much hair to enjoy a steam
room and they look bad. I could also complain about the "primitive" apes in
"Escape" and "Conquest" but those are important scenes. I don't think too much
is lost by skipping the steam room scene.

I've asked this before and never got an answer.
In "Rise", when Buck (the helicopter-jumping gorilla) is dying, it seems like he
"deflates" into a more POTA gorilla until the last shot where Caesar closes his
eyes. Is it just me or does anyone else see that? I could easily presume it was
a filmmaker decision, just as they made Caesar look semi- original POTA.
@&^@%^ it! I know what I see. I don't need anyone to justify it. It's a
fact, Landon. I guess it would be Caesar having a vision or too much to
drink. But I think it rocks.
So nobody wants to answer, huh? That's OK, I love
a tough crowd. I'll just wait here until someone concurs or challenges my
observation. I can wait.
(hums to himself) Dum de dum dum de dum de dum.
Still won't crack, eh? So, what's up with that sequel? It's been awfully quiet.
Are they hunting wabbits?
What da ya think, will James Franco be back? I
don't think so, he's a star salary they can do without. Even though his only hit

Sure it was Brad Pitt. It might have been David Spade. They look very alike these days. http://i.huffpost.com/gen/615700/thumbs/s-KILLING-THEM-SOFTLY-CANNES-large.jpg

It would be interesting to see some more of the back story of the TV series. But, the series might require a separate license from FOX. The 2001 requires a separate license. I remember Ty and Joe talking about this because their first concept for Revolution was Thade versus Caesar but FOX wouldn't give them a license for 2001. Same might be true for the TV series. There might also be legal reasons in terms of paying the writers who created the various characters.

Can TED really be out -performing PROMETHEUS at the box office??!!
I haven't mentioned this before because it's O.T., but I found PROMETHEUS to be one of the worst Science Fiction movies I've ever seen. I thought it a total dud and don't believe a sequel will actually get made. Ridley Scott is an old hack now. In fact, it's really dampened my hopes that DAWN will be better than RISE, which wasn't nearly as good as it could have been in the first place. There's still a strong mentality at Fox that doesn't quite know how to do SF right. Anyone remember their terrible remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL from just a few years ago? And were the X-FILES movies anything special? They ran X-MEN quickly into the ground, then kind of saved it, but they'll probably screw it up again. Fox really got lucky with RISE, but just keep your fingers crossed on DAWN, and pray there's no sequel to the dreadful PROMETHEUS.

P.S.
Went to TED. Wanted to walk out, but luckily a summer afternoon thunder strom knocked out the power to the theatre and they couldn't continue the film, so I got a free pass to another movie. and left. That was weeks ago and I still have my free pass, but there's been nothing, NOTHING this summer that I've wanted to see. Worst summer movie season in year, in my opinion.

When you mentioned that Fox handles sci-fi poorly, is the reason
Goerge Lucas handle Star Wars the way he did. He already new how
Fox is with sci-fi/fantasy projects, so he arranged to just use
Fox as a distributor only of his work.....You see the results!
The Star Wars franchise has done very well under George's direction!
If APJAC did POTA the same way Gerge Lucas did Star Wars, POTA
would be having the similar fan support and success today.
Just a thought. <.html

I would think it would be a foregone conclusion that Doyle would return (less so for "Thor" since it's a new director). But maybe he won't be back. Doyle has done a sequel before ("Harry Potter 4") but he's never revisited one of his own scores.

James, I agree with you on all five points.
I have to add these four:
Beneath: When Nova dies. I felt so sorry for her--like Taylor, all she endured so far...and meets her demise, she didn't deserve that.
Planet: The crew discovering that Stewart's chamber had malfunctioned. It would've been nice if she'd had a larger part in the movie...like Judy Franklin in the animated series.
Escape: When Dr. Milo was attacked by the gorilla. Like Lt. Stewart in the first movie, his role continuing would've been great.
Conquest: I thought that the riot scene was kind of violent. I also didn't like Armando's demise either.

Doesn't sound like you like mutant mind control. I don't mind the ones you mention. To me that stuff is what gives POTA it's edge.
I've watched "Conquest" with Natalie Trundy and she literally had to leave the room during the shock table sequence. And she was there during the making of the movie.
I'd say the worst thing for me is the masks during Ursus' "Beneath" speech, but the speech itself is good so I can't say skip the scene. These days I just skip to my favorite scenes instead of skipping over bad scenes. If I had to say skip a scene it would be the steam room scene in "Beneath". It just looks like camp. Apes have too much hair to enjoy a steam room and they look bad. I could also complain about the "primitive" apes in "Escape" and "Conquest" but those are important scenes. I don't think too much is lost by skipping the steam room scene.

For me, it's the three Orangutan's in court doing the "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Say No Evil" postures.
Absolutely crass and unimaginable that they would act that way in real life. But at the same time I can fully understand the people on the set saying we have to film this gag sequence because there will never be a better or more appropriate time.
From the many interviews with those involved this was indeed a last minute idea that everyone assumed would stay on the cutting room floor but for some inexplicable reason actually ended up in the final movie.
Today something like that would be perfect for an outtake reel or DVD 'extras'.
So I am glad they filmed it from a historical and comic perspective. But mortified they left it in the film.
Dario

Wouldn't Taylor have known that he was back on Earth at the moment Zira mentioned to Dr. Zaius about that "Hopkins Manual Dexterity Test"? Hopkins is a very un-ape-like name, and especially for a manual utilized by the Apes.

.htmlI agree with all of your points, John. I guess it was inevitable that modern references would slip through, but it's just sloppy and ruins the suspension of disbelief. I guess the U.S. apes had trade going with West Africa to get the cocoa beans needed for the chocolate.
The worst to me is the caged gorilla in ESCAPE, and the multitude of pull-over masks in BENEATH.

I don't believe there is such a thing as a "Hopkins Manual Dexterity Test" in the real world, so I don't see the name "Hopkins" as being any more of a problem in this regard than the use of Cornelius or Lucius or Julius, all very old and very real Earth names from the human civilization that currently resides on it.

I agree, the "Hopkins" reference was a mistake. By the way, manual in this context doesn't mean a reference or guide book, but "of or relating to the hands", as in Hand Dexterity Test.

I agree with all of your points, John. I guess it was inevitable that modern references would slip through, but it's just sloppy and ruins the suspension of disbelief. I guess the U.S. apes had trade going with West Africa to get the cocoa beans needed for the chocolate.
Wait a minute now.... aren't we all very excepting in the POTA universe of the original series that parts of the climate of what's now Africa have shifted to what's supposed to be a future post-nuclear Armageddon North American continent?
Geez... I'm beginning to wonder how some of you can stand watching these APES movies at all?!!!!

The latin-style names Lucius, Zaius, Julius, etc. seem right to me for some reason, but Hopkins? Maybe Hopkins was an ape scientist who migrated from England or Wales.
Parts of south Florida or south Texas would probably have similar climates to West Africa, but we don't have cocoa trees just because the climates are similar. But who knows, maybe it migrated from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico or Central America or somewhere.
Anyway, I think it would have been an improvement to leave both of those references out.

.htmlJohn Chambers won the Oscar for POTA but will a movie that portrays him also have an Oscar gold rush? Sounds like it. The movie "Argo" had it's first ever screening at the Telluride Film Festival today and reportedly knocked it out of the park. It tells the true story of the marriage between the CIA and Hollywood to rescue Iranian hostages in 1979. John Goodman plays our own John Chambers, who was a consultant on the plan.

Thanks, everyone, for your feedback...again, the name "Hopkins" should have told Taylor something...it's so unusual for an ape name.

The worst to me is the caged gorilla in ESCAPE, and the multitude of pull-over masks in BENEATH.

Apes have too much hair to enjoy a steam room and they look bad. I could also complain about the "primitive" apes in "Escape" and "Conquest" but those are important scenes. It's mutant chocolate. You see, after the bombs dropped there was a bucket of M&Ms that Chris Christie was eating in the Governor's Office in New Jersey, near where Ape City would rise centuries later, and the fallout made those M&Ms grow into mutant coco plants. <.html

| Subject: "Battle" the inspiration for "Argo" plan? |
.htmlLike I said in a previous post, yesterday at the Telluride Film Festival the movie "Argo" was sneaked. It's about Hollywood trying to free the Iranian hostages in 1979 and John Goodman plays John Chambers. According to this review, the idea for the plan was hatched while watching "Battle for the POTA" (at least in the movie; I don't know if that was actually the case). That makes two movies this year that "Battle" gets a cameo in (the other being the Paul Williams doc "Still Alive"). "Battle" has always been the poor stepchild of the POTA movies but maybe it's time has come.
