"Battlestar Galactica" (21st Century edition) and POTA. So say we

Maybe chocolate is different in the future!
It's mutant chocolate. You see, after the bombs dropped there was a bucket
of M&Ms that Chris Christie was eating in the Governor's Office in New
Jersey, near where Ape City would rise centuries later, and the fallout made
those M&Ms grow into mutant coco plants. <.html

It's about Hollywood trying to free the Iranian hostages in 1979 and John Goodman plays John Chambers. According to this review, the idea for the plan was hatched while watching "Battle for the POTA" (at least in the movie; I don't know if that was actually the case). That makes two movies this year that "Battle" gets a cameo in (the other being the Paul Williams doc "Still Alive"). "Battle" has always been the poor stepchild of the POTA movies but maybe it's time has come. > > http://www.hitfix.com/awards-campaign/review-ben-afflecks-argo-expertly-entertains-and-educates >

Say what you will about POTA2001, but Duncan was a POTA fan and was thrilled to get the role. I am literally surrounded by Mr. Duncan thanks to all the representations made of Attar (action figures, busts, etc.). He definitely made his mark in entertainment and will be missed.

Very sad new. You can see the enthusiasm he had for PotA when you watch him in the DVD extras for PotA2001. Good character actor who'll certainly be missed.

I went to the "POTA: Cataclysm" launch tonight at
Meltdown Comics (reportedly Robin Williams' fave comic book shop). Not much of
people buying comic books but lots of munchies and especially booze. They even
made a drink called Planet of the Apes.
And they had banana chips, beer, sodas, etc.
Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko were there signing, as well as some of the
behind-the-scenes folks (pics at Boom's twitter). Gabriel got there from Fox,
where he is storyboarding a certain movie we are interested in, but his lips
were sealed.
I was told BOOM! and Fox are happy with how
things are going so it looks like we'll have POTA comics for years to come
(BOOM! has a 4 or 5 year license and we're only about a year & 1/2 in).
"Cataclysm" has been outlined for a year so it will be around at least that
long. Gabriel has a heavy workload, especially with his creator-owned comics, so
he will not be doing any interior POTA art ("Betrayal" scratched the itch).
I talked to them about the moon blowing up.
Corinna is the researcher of the team. We don't know what would happen if the
moon were gone but her research indicated things could continue on for 1,000
years. Gabriel said the weird topography of the POTA could play into the idea of
the moon being gone (such as the Forbidden Zone). I told Corinna some fans (like
me) weren't thrilled with the moon being blown up and she basically said that's
fine, debates are welcome.
They haven't officially announced it but Darryl
Gregory's POTA comic will conclude with 3 "oversized" comic issues. So that's my
exclusive scoop. Alex Ross is only doing covers for the first 4 issues of
"Cataclysm" but they confirmed he's a POTA fan. I guess that's all I have to
report. I forgot to ask about the "Terror" reprints. It felt more like a company
party than a signing. There were only about 3 others besides me who actually
bought comics. But it was fun meeting the BOOM! team. <.html <.html

Its to early to have any landings and astronauts and if and when they do appear im sure that seen will be the final scene in the series and then the circle is complete unless they go for adventures with the Apes and astronauts and continue with a few more movies after the promised three. Take care, John M.

However, partisan comments about current elections and political figures have nothing to do with POTA. Therefore, they are off topic and don't belong. If anyone wants to discuss the current election or candidates, there are several very good groups and forums where you can do that. But this is not one of those places.
Thank you!

The Planet of the Apes films are political films. There is no doubt about that. Any discussion of the political nature and commentary of the POTA films is always welcome.
Are the POTA movies more liberal in their outlook or conservative (if we can agree on the definitions of both)? What's your opinion?
ESCAPE and CONQUEST seems to be on the side of liberalism -- In ESCAPE, no one is supposed to be on the side of ultra-conservative Dr. Hasslein, and in CONQUEST, the apes are after nothing less than equal rights -- but at the end of PLANET, Dr. Zaius' conservatism triumphs, and with BENEATH, a very large number of POTA fans love the ultra-right wing extremism of General Ursus, but at the same time are any of those fans against the obvious liberalism of Zira and Cornelius? And, in BATTLE, don't the liberal apes win in the end? Or, do most POTA fans not even think of these aspects of the thing called POTA?

Wouldn't it be cool to have some sort of cameo by Ron or Booth in DAWN? And yes, Jackie would make an awesome human antagonist.

Some don't see any commentary in POTA. I don't know how but they do. That's fine. For me the commentary (and the hard edge of it, different than, say, "Star Trek") is what recommends it. The older I get, the more POTA resonates.

.htmlNo, she hasn't done much in film. That's the price range Fox likes. She said in some of those podcasts she's gone up for the female leads in "Battleship", "Real Steel" and "Robocop" (which has cast Jackie Earle Haley) but didn't get them. Everybody has to start somewhere. But she is in the new "Riddick" movie starring Vin Diesel. It's a long shot but I think she rocks and I'm rooting for her.
She's currently in the A & E show "Longmire".

.htmlI'd love to see Ron and Booth in the movie, but realistically they are out of the game (unless they are cast out of nostalgia). Katee and Jackie are realistic in that they are going for these roles (both were up for the new "Robocop"; Jackie got a role). And if they were cast in "Dawn" they have POTA connections I would silently enjoy.
If you're upset about party poopers, don't take it out on Katee.

It is for all POTA fans regardless of what political party they belong to, regardless of whether they are liberal or conservative or moderate. This group is to celebrate POTA, not to push a partisan political agenda for one political party. And if anyone is so myopic that they have a problem with another POTA fan because they belong to another political party or because the group is a non-partisan site; then maybe it is best that you don't post here anymore.

We all know that Jackie Earle "Kraik" Haley should be in "Rise 2". Does anyone object? I didn't think so.
The question is, who should he play? I was thinking one of the human survivors but, wait a minute, hold the phone... what about that ship full of astronauts? What was it, the Icarus? We all know damn well that Taylor didn't go to friggin' Mars so that's out. The only way to do this is those astronauts return and find humanity devastated by the virus. They're like, "What the?". And Kraik, I mean Mr. Haley, is one of the astronauts and he comes upon one of the human survivors, a cameo by Ron Harper. And he's like, "I need a pouch to carry my things in, my half eaten chocolate chip cookie and so forth". But Ron can't help him because he's barely surviving. So Haley fights the apes when he's not making wild, passionate love to Freida Pinto.
There's your sequel right there. Write your congressman. Tell Newt Gingrich you'll vote for him if he makes this happen. It's a Kraik world and POTA's just living in it.

bombs, and one was stored/tested on the Moon, and ultimately that
accounted for the "That strange luminosity, yet there's no moon" comment.
I also remember a horrible one which crossed over with Battlestar
Galactica. Ultimately, Baltar's ship ended up being destroyed by the
second bomb- and it was described like he was seeing the destruction in
slow motion. There was also this **painfully** detailed "shock" moment
where people were standing in front of the bomb discussing it, and Taylor
(GASP!!) emerged from the shadows behind it...
Ugh.

Subject: Aboro, Zanuck in new "Jaws" doc
.html
.html
Today is the 38th anniversary of the POTA TV
show. What's significant about the POTA TV show? It got me hooked on POTA. But
alas, as we know, it didn't last long. So I moved on to "Jaws". If I had to pick
two fictional creations that had the biggest impact on me as a kid, it would
have to be those two. And both are dark tales of animals (as opposed to "Lassie"
or "Flipper"; "Gentle Ben", remember that?). And both also had the late Richard
Zanuck as a key player.
All of this is a way of saying that the new first
"Jaws" blu-ray is in town and it includes the doc "The Shark is Still Working".
I KNOW I've posted about this doc in the past. It was made not by the studio,
but by a group of dedicated "Jaws" fans who just wanted to tell the story of how
"Jaws" conquered the culture. They filmed it in 2005 - 2006, recording "Jaws"
participants who are no longer with us, including Percy "Aboro" Rodrigues and
now Zanuck. As POTA fans know, Percy has a terrific deep voice and delivery, and
that served him well for doing narration for movie trailers (including "The
Exorcist", "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind", 3 of the biggest
movies of the '70's).
So that's "Jaws", which was almost 40 years ago.
It was directed by Steven Spielberg. If you don't know who he is, google him.
And check out this new "Jaws" doc. What's Spielberg up to today (literally
today)? He's doing a Q & A tonight about his new movie "Lincoln", as well as
debut the first trailer for the potential Oscar winner.
Who's in "Lincoln"? Is that what you asked? Well,
many people, including Jackie Earle Haley as the Vice President of the
Confederacy. See, this is the anniversary of the POTA TV show, and like Percy,
Jackie was in the show (he played Kraik in "The Legacy") and he's also worked
for Spielberg. Chuck Heston can't say that. So what we're saying here is it's a
big day for Spielberg, a big day for the POTA TV show, and we all love POTA and
"Jaws". And probably that Jackie Earle Haley will be in "Dawn of the POTA" with
the Harbinger of Death.

One slightly disconcerting thing on the audio is that Zira seems, by design, to have an American accent, but I suppose they had o differentiate things. It's a good listen.John, Scrolls.

Subject: Tom Rothman leaving Fox
.htmlBig news at 20th Century Fox, home of the POTA franchise. Longtime studio exec Tom Rothman is leaving the studio. Rothman was perhaps the most familiar of the Fox execs for hosting a Fox Movie Channel show and being given the public blame when Fox's movies suck. Rothman was known as a hands on exec (for example it was his idea to have the Golden Gate Bridge in "Rise") and so many movie fans are probably celebrating this. But he seemed to turn things around with stuff like "Rise" and "X-Men: First Class". Fox had a bad summer this year and also allowed one of the big hits to get away, the Mark Wahlberg "Ted" movie from Fox's home grown Seth McFarland.
Rothman's partner in crime Jim Gianopulos will now reportedly run the movie side of things. What does that mean for the in-development "Dawn of the POTA"? Stay tuned.

Subject: "Dawn" of a new Fox era?
.htmlSo what does Tom Rothman's departure mean for 20th Century Fox? Rothman was perhaps the most vilified studio exec in modern times. He reportedly very much placed his stamp on the Fox he oversaw. Things were great if Rothman liked a movie (he championed the Russell Crowe flick "Master and Commander", for example). But if he didn't he could insinuate his influence and rub creatives the wrong way. That's not to say filmmakers are always right or that they don't need practical advice. But Rothman was reportedly oppressive and the proof was often in the pudding with Fox's big movies. The cries of "Fox sucks" could often be heard.
Rothman and Jim Gianopulos ran Fox for over a decade (POTA2001 was their kickoff). It's rare for studio execs to last that long and especially working as a team. But Fox and it's parent News Corp. usually do not have the dramatic turnovers of other companies. They promote from within and their execs grow cobwebs. So probably the big picture at Fox won't change. It's still basically the same people there. But with Rothman gone, there might be a difference in what pictures get made, and more freedom for the filmmakers. Jim Gianopulos is now running the movie division and reportedly he's more filmmaker friendly. Rothman took credit in his buh-bye letter for the top 2 box office movies of all time but reportedly he didn't want to make "Titanic" or "Avatar". Gianopulos was the James Cameron handler (and a good friend of the filmmaker). If control freak Cameron likes Gianopulos then maybe some more interesting ideas will get through now.
Gianopulos came up through distribution and is considered a pioneer in what is now big business selling movies internationally. American movies now make lots more in foreign countries than they do in the U.S. and Gianopulos led the charge. But he doesn't seem to be one to tell filmmakers how to make their movies (that was Rothman's job). Probably filmmakers will still be kept on a tight budget leash (one of the tightest of the major studios) because owner Rupert Murdoch still digs profit above all else. But I think Gianopulos will give filmmakers more breathing room and it might result in slightly better movies, especially on the summer "tent pole" level. But Gianopulos has remained in the shadows the last decade while Rothman has been up front, so it remains to be seen exactly what Gianopulos' style is and whether better movies will result.
Here's a good summation of the Rothman era at Fox:

Also, did you see that soon 20th Century Fox will be known as 20th Century Fox Film? Boy, I wish it wasn't owned by News Corp.

Welcome. Were those pics from the Monteal comicon just this past weekend? I was there but only for Saturday. I was keeping an eye out for Nick Armenti another Montrealer that appeared at the Ottawa comiccon as a Gorilla at the beginning of the summer, but did not see him there.
Did not see any apes at all but there were some Ape related aspects to the con. I met with Revolution of the Planet of the Apes editor/writer Ty Templeton and had him do an Ape sketch for me. I then met and bought a print from Leo Leibelman that was used in Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes. I'll upload pics I took.
I'm originally from Montreal myself but now live in Ottawa. But I go back to Montreal often so I hope that I get to meet you in person someday. Especially if you're going somewhere in costume.

I just got the 2013 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide, and my respect for this thing has gone way, way down. They only give RISE two and a half stars! Yeah, that's right, only two and a half stars, and say that it "starts out so well that it seems a shame it winds up like a cheesy monster movie from the 1950s." What planet are they living on?!!! And to make things worse, remember SUPER 8? I've already nearly forgotten it. Maltin gives that one three and a half stars!!!! This guy has lost it.

So is it something else? Maybe the director doesn't like the script and they don't want to say that publically? Or maybe the director has had enough of Fox. His other two projects are at other studios so he hasn't exactly built a nest there.
I guess I'll just have to be a Transformers fan. Those movies run on time! <.html
