I doubt Morsi knows who Urko is.  He's probably only seen the original movie and the awful remake.  I doubt the TV show played in Egypt.

I think Heston was filming WILL PENNY at the time of that photo, and probably didn't shave again until he'd about finished PLANET in August of '67.

That expression on Zaius's face is funny.  He looks as if he's a bit crazed.

So was that from the TV series?
I remember they used to take
episodes and string them together
and call it a movie, but I can't think
which episode that might be.

The script for 'HOSTAGE', the unfilmed Apes tv episode, refers to a pyramid style building in the Blasted Zone. So, there's obviously always been a really close Apes/Egypt connection going on---even the Gorilla helmet is a take on the old combined kingdom headress of the Egyptian rulers (not sure how to spell pharaoh, so copped out).If Alof Hitler could be a massive Disney fan, there's no reason at all why those loveable, fluffy bunnies in the Muslim Brotherhood can't be Apes fans.John, Scrolls.
PS, oh crap, Veetus is back!

Subject: Andy Serkis talks "Dawn of the POTA"
.html
There's a certain little movie called "The Hobbit" coming out next week and Andy (Gollum/Caesar) Serkis has been making the rounds. He gave Comingsoon a quote about "Dawn of the POTA":

"The interesting thing now will be how Caesar operates in this world - - because of the virus that hits at the end of the first movie - - and how Caesar brings an accord between the apes and the surviving humans and that's going to be interesting where we take that".

Yep, "Battle For the POTA". Serkis has met director Matt Reeves (that's good, since they shoot in March) and there's been some preliminary CG tests. Serkis also talks about "Animal Farm", a project he hopes to direct. That's another one that Rupert Wyatt was going to direct. I don't want to start rumors but could Serkis and Wyatt have had a falling out? Wyatt seems to have fallen off the map. All the best to him.

Been reading that SKYFALL has just ovetaken AVATAR in the UK for the biggest box office. However, the article makes the point that in 2001, the average ticket price was £4.14, whereas in 2011, it was £6.06, so, in terms of actual human bums on seats, AVATAR may still be ahead.Made me wonder of Burton's APES , oddly, probably generated more actual paying customers than RISE? And do people, with the higfher ticket prices, just wait for the DVD/BluRay now, instead? Do we know how Burton's dvd and Wyatt's dvd sales compare? John, Scrolls.

Just a heads up to those buying the BOOM POTA comics. There will be a 32 page one-shot special that will be going back to the Daryl Gregory storyline:
http://www.boom-studios.com/planet-of-the-apes-special-01-cover-a-available-for-pre-order.html"

I only found out about this because my shop (or LCS in comic lingo) has their database set to pick up all PotA titles for me.
I've put in my preorder, although I'm not sure what the arrival date will be. Sometime in January or February.

Just thought you'd want to know.

The script, penned by Rod Serling and based on a 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, cleverly used civilized apes and savage humans to address 1960s issues such as civil rights (“some apes, it seems, are more equal than others”) and nuclear war.

If you are pro-Israel, you can claim that how the poor humans are hunted down, killed, or used for scientific experiments is an illustration of Jewish history and why the Jewish people need a safe and secure nation of their own. And if you are pro-Palestinian, you can claim that the oppression of the humans by the apes is what Palestinians endure in the West Bank. And if you think both sides in the Middle East are crazy, you can claim that the ultimate fate of humans and apes in the movie is a good reason to make peace.

The best thing about Catalyst are those Alex Ross covers, even if you don't like the idea of the Moon being blown up. :)

We should consider ourselves lucky that we have one of the preeminent cover artists working in the field today (apologies to Graham Hill) working on PotA. People not familiar with comic creators have no idea what an Alex Ross cover means.

When I look at these covers I'm reminded of the covers from the old Marvel comic magazines. I still prefer some of those magazine covers, but what we're getting now is pretty close.

I don't mind the moon blowing up. I'm not a fan of the other ape species introduced in the Sully series. Granted, I still like the book but it seems like they are trying to be a bit OS and a bit Burton.

The actor who played the gorillas Zon and Jason on the POTA TV show has died. He never really had the role that would make people go, "Oh, him!" but he seemed to work steady and certainly his work on POTA was memorable. Zon was the racist bad guy in "The Deception" and Jason was the by the book gorilla in "The Gladiators" (he didn't share your tender concern for humans). He was also in the 1974 movie "Moonchild" that starred Victor Buono. Probably he didn't dream of being remembered for playing gorillas but we take our fame where we can get it. There's lots of POTA folks who are also "Hobbit" folks, and with that movie right around the corner (are YOU seeing it in 48 frames?) we're getting some updates on "Dawn of the POTA" (basically that they are still prepping it). Joe Letteri answers some questions in this video. The big "whew!" is that it's not a problem to juggle all these projects. Besides "Apes", WETA has two more years of "The Hobbit", they are prepping "Avatar 2 & 3" to start shooting next year and they also have a hand in movies like "Man of Steel" (Superman), "The Wolverine" and "Iron Man 3". He says starting with "Avatar" they restructured how they approach motion capture/CG characters and he talks a little about that.

I don't know about the U.K. but "Rise" made about the same as POTA2001. About $100 million more worldwide, but 10 years later of higher prices but a recession. Now it remains to be seen if POTA can take the ball and run with it as more people get on board on DVD. These days if you want to play with the big boys you have to come out in 3D because it skews the numbers.

It ought to be noted that those 'other ape species' are actually in
        the original novel.

It looks like "Dawn of the POTA" is joining the crowd and going 3D. This will give a chance to collect those higher 3D tickets and perhaps give it a shot at the $1 billion club. Though it hasn't started shooting yet, it doesn't like they are going to shoot in 3D but just post-convert it after the fact like most movies do. I don't usually bother with 3D unless it was filmed that way ("Avatar", "The Hobbit") but I will probably check out apes in the 3rd dimension.

If you have yet to get the APES movies on Blu-ray, Amazon is currently selling all five for just $19.99.  I think that's the lowest price ever and I hope they're trying to clear their stock because Fox will re-issue the movies in 2014 in preparation for DAWN.  Hopefully PLANET and perhaps all will get remasters.

It would seem that "Dawn of the POTA" would have much more time to perfect the FX, considering "Rise of the POTA" came together in about a year and a half, whereas "Dawn" has 3 years since "Rise". But, no. According to my calculations, "Rise" got 13 months from the start of filming until release (July 2010 to Aug. 2011), and "Dawn" gets 14 months (March 2013 to May 2014). We are now ape-proximately half way between "Rise" and "Dawn" and that time has been spent on the script (thankfully). But even there "Dawn" gets shortchanged, since the "Rise" script was in development since 2007.
I guess the advantage "Dawn" has is that the studio didn't have much expectations for "Rise" but now that it was a huge hit (it made more than "Batman Begins", more than the recent "Star Trek", more than any "X-Men") Fox will be willing to throw money at it to make those special effects special. Plus they need time to make it 3D. Maybe it is true that Rupert Wyatt didn't feel he had enough time. But really, POTA is not getting any less time than other franchises get. It used to be 3 years between "Star Wars" movies but Disney is planning one every two years. Two years is the new three years and welcome to it.

DAWN can't come quickly enough, for me.I'm a smidge concerned that it's going to be in the same month as Spidey 2--although that might change.I'm hoping, too, that the Apes start to have the beginnings of classic Apes costumes, somehow---they can't keep being noble freedom fighters with their asses hanging out.John, Scrolls.

That scene is in the picture and it's not Cornelius riding him. It's when Aldo declares martial law and the humans are rounded up. The gorillas grab Landis and he goes, "Hey! Hey!". Landis has other shots in the movie. Not a very thorough book.

Yeah, I noticed it and I think I've brought it up before.  You see it in the transfer of the 2004 DVD, and in the transfer of the 2008 Blu-ray, you can see that all Fox had their "people" do was digitally cover it up, and you can see it being covered up as the camera shot moves while that hair stays there.
If there's a new remastered Blu-ray, it'll be one of the first things I go to to see if there's been any real change.

Doesn't look good for James Franco's return in "Dawn of the POTA". Even when Rupert Wyatt was directing, Franco was only slated for a cameo. Now he sez there's just radio silence:

"I was going to be a small part of the next one... there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like Tom Rothman, who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert's not a part of it so I don't know. My guess is I won't be in it. Nobody's talked to me since Rupert left".

There MUST be a person at FOX we could write to to encourage this? John, Scrolls.

I agree--there's actually a good argument just to buy the DVD now, as you can play it anywhere, rather than pay more for a poor commentary on a more restrictive blu ray.The THOR commentary by Sir Ken is actually a masterclass in explanation and really illuminating.Other than that, commentaries lately have been dire.John, Scrolls.

The thing about commentary tracks is that no matter how good it is, I tend to only listen once. Most of them are a waste of time and they often tell me things that in the end I'd be happier not knowing.

I have just listened to the, frankly, inanane commentary on The Amazing Spider-Man (I think it's the worst I've heard) and it struck me that, lately, commentaries by ACTORS seem to be a thing of the past.Directors and writers are usually, in all honesty, boring, but actors can be fun (Kurt Russell on The Thing, for example).Andy Serkis would have been a fascinating commentary on RISE.Are actors above such trivialities, nowadays? I like Franco and loved him in RISE, but maybe, just maybe, his minimal involvement could suggest we move on in time in DAWN, so it's not just a direct sequel? We've still got 2000 years to cover, after all.John, Scrolls.
