When we look at the Director and screenplay writer for DAWN of the POTA, we should put it all into context by looking at Star Wars Ep VII, which will have a screenplay by Michael Arndt of Toy Story 3 fame, with Brad Bird of INCREDIBLES fame touted as director.Disney are clearly going for a hard edged, adult look for Star Wars and if we're going for mature, social commentary over the next few years, it will be our hairy chums leading the march.I suddenly feel a lot more smug about the DAWN team.John, Scrolls.

CATACLYSM #3 is in my hairy paws and it's a cracker.The script from Bechko and Hardman does that thing that makes all true Apes fans happy--it mixes Apes and Water!! WHY does that ALWAYS work??!! And the art from Damian Couceiro is so clean and unfussy it allows the script to flow (no pun intended).I'm really loving this series--if you haven't tried it yet, dip a toe in and test it out.John, Scrolls.

Now Cataclysm...

I buy get the issues as soon as they come out but like to set aside a few issues to read all at once. I dug into #1 and #2 last night. To say that it starts of with a bang is an understatement. I thought blowing up the Moon would bother me given the real, science based. impact this would have on our planet, but I got over it quickly and appreciated that this was in fact an attempt to explain why the astronauts never figured out what planet they were on. So I set science aside for the moment and just went with it.

The story does a bit of time jumping itself, but I was glad to see that it had familiar faces as well (Zaius, Cornelius) and more importantly gives more information about their lives.

The mystery aspect is intriguing and holding up with a few nice cliff hangers in these issues.

Some things that bothered me was the use of the word 'appartment' for housing in one case and a few to many quick jumps in the story telling.

But all in all I really like it and I will be reading #3 tonight.

I recently picked up a 2 disk POTA set at Dollar General.It contains the original first POTA film with the 2nd disk containing 9 hours of extras which include the Behind the Scenes of making of POTA hosted by Roddy McDowall. Not a bad pick up for $3.95.

Did the economic downturn hurt RISE at the box office? It had fantastic word of mouth but didn't quite crack the half billion.There were a few blockbusters last year and maybe folk were choosing one or two movies only? Didn't Burton's Apes actually out do RISE at the US Box office? John, Scrolls.

I tend to doubt that. The Mutant's illusions were not that effective on the Apes.

I agree, but, playing Devil's Advocate on it, we DO see the Council of Five halting an entire gorilla army with their illusions (crucified gorillas, bleeding Lawgiver) and it is only the sharper Zaius who breaks the spell.My point is that maybe there's a last resort group plan where ALL mutants pool their mental resources to 'mind wipe en masse'.It seems all mutants have enhanced mental powers so maybe combining minds creates a powerful weapon.John, Scrolls.

But Mendez being shot is part of the illusion, to draw in all the Ape forces in a confined space so's they could dispose of them.If you've seen X-Men First Class, I'm thinking along the lines of when Emma Frost fools the Russian general into thinking he's getting it on with her, whilst she's across the room laughing at him..An alternative twist ending for BENEATH could have been Mendez and crew looking down from the dais, with the Apes, under their influence, having shot each other and Mendez saying calmly 'God's will be done',the great hidden Mutant secret being that The Bomb was never operational.John, Scrolls.

Just finished Jim Lovell's 'Lost Moon' (great read) and it mentions in there how, when the stations in America had decided not to run Apollo 13's broadcast from space, in April 1970,ABC's The Dick Cavett Show was run instead, featuring one James Whitmore---that guy just didn't like astronauts, did he!? Speaking of which, the book also points out that when Eisenhower set up NASA in the 50s, the word was hypenated as 'astro-naut' (sky sailor).So, Urko was, actually, only one syllable out with his 'As-tro-naut'! And in regard to Apollo 13, William Broyles who co-wrote the screenplay to that movie also co-wrote the screenplay to POTA 2001.

Actually, I think what happened was the US entered into an alliance with the Moon and then wiped out the inhabitants accidentally in a friendly fire incident.It's interesting that a nuclear winter would,it's reported, follow--maybe that's where Kygoor in the animated series came from?! Did anyone see this in the Time Magazine interview with Egyptian Prez Morsi:

"On the lessons of Planet of the Apes: I remember a movie. Which one? Planet of the Apes. The old version, not the new one. There is a new one. Which is different. Not so good. It [does] not [express] the reality as it was the first one. But at the end, I still remember, this is the conclusion: When the big monkey, he was head of the Supreme Court I think — in the movie! — and there was a big scientist working for him, cleaning things, [who] has been chained there. And it was the planet of the apes after the destructive act of a big war and atomic bombs and whatever in the movie. And the scientist was asking him to do something … "Don't forget you are a monkey," [the man] tells [the ape]. "Don't ask me about this dirty work." What did the big ape, the monkey, say? He said, "You're human. You did it [to] yourself." That's the conclusion. Can we do something better for ourselves?"

Wow, is all I can say. First, what the hell is he talking about? Does anyone know what he's referring to? The scene between Taylor and Zauis on the beach, perhaps? If so, I'd suggest Mr Morsi is confused and needs to watch the movie again immediately.

Second, what point is he making exactly? Is he identifying the Egyptians as the apes in this scenario, and the US/West as the humans? This definitley doesn't bode well for the future of the middle east.

Third, this must be the first Planet of the Apes reference by a global leader EVER. Fantastic. Maybe it'll open the floodgates. If John Boehner starts dropping Ursus quotes in the debt talks we'll know it's a trend.

I think he's identifying Egyptians, Americans, Palestinians, and Israelis as humans. His point was that as humans, we have the potential to destroy the world (as in PotA), or to choose not to.

James Franco is in Sam Raimi's new OZ film, with some really cute little flying monkey---Franco is cornering the 'cute little monkey' market lately.It raises my hopes for the ultimate filming of Marvel's TERROR and the Psychedrome's Winged Monkey Demons--it surely must now be inevitable?
