I live in Louisiana, and I think the primary reason would be the tax breaks, the entire state is focused on movie and television production. Big tax credits that can be sold to others if not used by the production companies. We even have a local TV and Film office. I never thought we'd see Gerard Butler, Kevin Costner or Diane Keaton at our local Starbucks, etc., but that's whats been happening over the last few years.

It looks to me as if they're building parts of the San Francisco waterfront in New Orleans -- the rest no doubt to be created with CGI. I believe that arched structure is the same one a giant octopus destroyed in IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA in 1955.
Sometimes it helps to be an old Sci-fi movie geek to know these references!

"Evil Dead" remake find themselves sent up in "Scary Movie 5," the
numbingly inane if cheerfully up-to-the-minute new entry in a franchise
presumed to have breathed its last seven years ago. One scene inspired
by "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" features a roomful of chimps hurling
their feces at the wall, providing a perhaps unintended metaphor for
the writing process behind this unwelcome resurrection. Still, insofar
as past installments have proved frighteningly lucrative (more than $800
million worldwide), there may yet be some commercial life in this

On tonight's Mad Men on AMC, Don took his son to see PLANET OF THE APES at a theatre in 1968 soon after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. And his son is around the same age I was when he's seeing PLANET for the first time. His reaction to the end was great, but he got to do something I didn't get to do when I saw it for the first time -- get to see it again right away.
By the way, since they saw PLANET right after the King assassination, they would have seen the movie in general release, not while it was playing at the Capitol Theatre. Can't recall all the theatres that played the movie in Manhattan after April 3, 1968, but I have that info someplace. I wonder who are the POTA fans that work at MAD MEN?

OK, so on April 3, 1968 PLANET continued at the 72nd St Playhouse, between 1st and 2nd Avenues, and started its other Manhattan engagements at The New Amsterdam on 42nd St, the Guild 50th at 33 W 50th St, the Academy of Music at 14th St near 3rd Ave, and at the Riverside at 2563 Broadway.
Have the makers of MAD MEN ever said where Don Draper's apartment is in Manhattan? Most likely he'd go to the nearest theatre showing PLANET.
All of this is fiction, of course, but that's never stopped anyone here.

Based on that the 72nd St. Playhouse would make the most sense. The Cinema Treasures website describes the theater as, "Small plush neighborhood theater on the upper east side...with red or maroon velvet seats similar in style to those at the Roxy Theatre and Radio City Music Hall". Probably a coincidence that is exactly how the theater in the episode looked.
I'm really surprised at how prominently POTA was featured in the episode. While Mad Men does make a lot of cultural references, they are usually just throw away lines or minor plot points. Shows like Star Trek, Dean Martin or Bewitched are mentioned but just in passing. They have ignored Batman and James Bond which were cultural phenomenons in the 60s. And what really put the POTA inclusion over the top was having Don reading 'The Ape' promotional herald. As Rory noted earlier, someone on that show must be a big fan.
BTW Jon Hamm is on the Daily Show tonight. I doubt POTA will come up but you never know with Jon Stewart.
Also for those living in the NYC area, the local PBS station (ch. 13) will be airing Planet of the Apes Saturday at 9PM.

Well, that's why I said this is really a bookmark or benchmark in POTA history. This is POTA as major cultural reference on a major TV series, probably because the MAD MEN people wanted to make a connection between POTA and the assassination of King and US culture at that time, though they didn't make it literal, which is nice.
Good old channel 13. Still around when all the great NYC independents, Channels 5, 9, and 11, are now long gone, affiliates of Fox or whatever. I have fond memories of NY TV back in the sixties, though I really wouldn't want to go back to those days TV-wise. Can you imagine only having an antenna on the roof, seven channels to choose from, mostly movies from the '30s and 40s to watch -- and edited at that, and most everything goes off the air after 1 AM? And you had to turn a dial for your channel and then tune it in! That's what it was like, and oh yeah, your TV was most probably B&W and no larger than 17 inches, unless your father was doing very well and you had a Zenith color TV with a 25" screen, lucky you.
That's why going to a movie was really special back then, a big deal. Now, it like, "Well, I should wait for the DVD/Blu-ray, but I really want to see it now."
The magic is gone.
