.html I've been having e-mail troubles lately but I've got to give an attaboy to Al Ruiz. Nobody has worked harder to provide info on the recent "Rise of the POTA" and now "Dawn". I've just been pleased and incredibly grateful of his coverage of his fave movies starting with POTA2001. I don't think Al gets the credit he deserves. Now it looks like his "Dawn" updates have been booted off Twitter. I don't know why but it's ridiculous (even Zauis would think so). Meanwhile, you can check out www.riseoftheplanetoftheapes for the latest. And thank you Al! <.html

Is the only actor to appear in all five films in the 'Planet of the Apes' series. He played an ape in all of them except for Escape in which he played a human, General Faulkner. It was also the only one of the films in which he was credited. |

.htmlThis is no shocker, because of Michael Giacchino's relationship with director Matt Reeves and Reeves' childhood buddy J. J. Abrams, but Giacchino tweeted that he's doing the music for "Dawn of the POTA". I've been a fan of his since "Alias" a decade ago. He was doing video game music when J. J. Abrams invited him aboard "Alias". He went on to be Abrams' main composer of TV ("Alias", "Lost", "Fringe") and movies ("Mission: Impossible 3", "Star Trek", "Super 8", "Star Trek Into Darkness"). Matt Reeves did "Cloverfield" for J. J. and Giacchino did the end credit music and now it looks like Giacchino and Reeves are a team too ("Let Me In"). Giacchino is also the main composer for Pixar and won the Oscar for "Up".
Giacchino is one of my faves and when "Rise" was gearing up I asked him if he was going to do it. I'd heard he was a POTA fan and he told me he is, he loves all of it; the movies, the TV show, the cartoons. But he wasn't asked to do "Rise". I loved Patrick Doyle's music for "Rise" and would have been happy if he returned. But I love Giacchino's stuff too and can't wait to hear what he comes up with (maybe his closest would be "Lost" with it's jungle boogie/sci-fi weirdness). "Dawn" is Matt Reeve's film and it's his choice.

.htmlImdb has listed the editors for "Dawn of the POTA". They are William Hoy ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0398343/ ) and Stan Salfas ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0758159/ ). Salfas comes more from TV, but he's worked often with director Matt Reeves on "Felicity", "Let Me In" and his first flick "The Pallbearer". So he's a comfort zone for Reeves. Hoy has done movies like "Dances With Wolves", "Patriot Games", "We Were Soldiers" (which featured actress Keri Russell), "300" and "Watchmen", as well as some Fox action flicks like "Fantastic 4" and "I, Robot".
"Rise" had the benefit of James Cameron's editors Conrad Buff and Mark Goldblatt, just as it had WETA- friendly director of photography Andrew Lesnie. These were safe choices for movie that was something of an experiment (and with something of an inexperienced director). "Dawn" seems to be stretching it's legs more. It doesn't need as much of a safety net from particular experts. <.html

.html I guess May 17 is as close to a publication date that we have for Boulle's 1963 novel "Planet of the Apes". The date appears on the timeline for the 35th anniversary DVD of POTA68. That would be in France, I guess. The book arrived in the U.S. around the time of the JFK assassination.
Anyway, I guess a half century is something to go ape about. And things are looking good for the concept, it's still a big deal. It's a story that still resonates. Thank you, Pierre Boulle! <.html

.htmlHi, all!
Believe it or not, after some seven years in the making, I've finally released the final Planet of the Apes Rarities DVD (aka Rarities 3)!!
For screenshots of each of the menus (and to see what's on the disc), visit my Apes site at the URL below:
https://pota.goatley.com/dvd/rarities3/
There are two ways you can get the DVDs:
- You can arrange with James to send him blank discs and return
postage, and he'll copy the discs and return them to you. If
you want to pursue this, contact James at JamesA1102@...
- You can purchase the blank DVDs from Greg P. For people in the
U.S., this works out to $3.50. NOTE: YOU ARE PAYING ONLY FOR
THE DISCS, THE PACKAGING, AND THE POSTAGE. ABSOLUTELY NO PROFIT
IS BEING DERIVED FROM THIS SET. You can send the money via PayPal
to Greg at urko3085@...
If you want the first two Rarities DVDs, $6 to Greg will get
you a set of all four discs. For non-U.S. residents, contact
Greg to work it out.
Many thanks to all of those who contributed the content for these discs. I honestly don't remember all the details of who contributed what, so I'm not even going to try to name names. They can step forward for the credit, if they want. But these discs wouldn't have been possible without them!!

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but I just discovered on YouTube the complete Roddy McDowall home movies footage from the set of PLANET back in 1967. I've only had time to watch about 6 minutes of it, but it does offer more than what's on the DVD/Blu-ray, nothing major -- from what I've seen so far -- but still interesting.

That is a typo. The two discs will have the video burned to them.
For Canada it looks like an extra buck should cover the additional postage, so please send $4.50 via PayPal.
I think James did sleeves for the earlier two Rarities discs.

.htmlDone! Thanks Greg.
Now here's another question for everyone. Is anyone keeping track of what are on all these disks and if there is any way to keep track of what isn't on them for a new disc some day? I'm too lazy to sit down and list it all and then see if I can spot any missing stuff myself. I do try to keep copies of whatever new photos, videos, or merchandise I come across (ebay, etsy, etc). It never ends. I wish I had time to properly catalog it all, but for the time being it's all just sorted in many nested and directories in a somewhat hierarchical archive.

Yes, I'm still on the forum!
That is a typo. The two discs will have the video burned to them.
For Canada it looks like an extra buck should cover the additional postage, so please send $4.50 via PayPal.
I think James did sleeves for the earlier two Rarities discs.

I will be keeping an eye out, but at this time, I don't plan to do any more Rarities DVDs. There'd have to be something really amazing that comes to light before I'd do another one, as I think we've pretty much gotten everything there is that is vintage.
There are a slew of newer programs---like all of those that aired on FMC, but were also included as extras on the Blu-ray set---that I would not collect on a Rarities disc because they're too new. The vast majority of what has made it to the Rarities discs is 30 to 45 years old or fan-filmed.

.html.html I have my copy and it has some gems! Thanks Hunter for what i know must have taken a lot of time and effort! I know it's hard to find extra time to do anything so your work is greatly appreciated! I contributed the sketch from the Sonny and Cher show. Tracked it down through a woman on ebay a while ago. Not Shakespeare but significant as the makeup/costumes are obviously the real deal. They must have come over from the POTA set (Lee Delano??) or at least the creative team made up S&C regulars? Would be cool to get interviews! Thanks again Hunter!! Tim
Hi, all!
But these discs wouldn't have been possible without them!!

.html Hard to believe but it's been almost 2 years since "Rise of the POTA", and the Memorial Day weekend marks one year to go before it's sequel. That's right, "Dawn of the POTA" is getting a primo Memorial Day release (unless Fox blinks), suggesting the studio has a lot of faith in it. It's a far cry from the tepid release of "Rise" in the wilds of August.
What's that you say, you didn't like "Rise"? Doesn't matter; it's a new director and a new vision. Almost everybody on the film is new to the POTA. We're all starting fresh (but those who don't like CG apes are out of luck). A year from now we might yearn for the "Rise" team if it sucks, or it might be better than our wildest dreams (well, not the dreams of those who want makeup). There's not much else to say, they are deep into filming in New Orleans until mid-July and what they are making will slowly be unveiled in the coming year. Maybe we'll get a tease during Comic-Con in late July but probably our first look will be around Christmas.
Anyway, I think the one year mark is fun to ponder, the difference between "it'll never get here!" and "it's coming!". Thank you for your attention. <.html

Knowing as much as I did about RISE before I saw it kind of made it anti-climatic. I was somewhat disappointed with it. I'd like to avoid that this time, so there will be much ignoring of things posted here, or at least I'll make the effort.

Boy, I have an uneasy feeling about this movie. Didn't the TV series already cover a future ruined San Francisco? I'd rather this was actually set in New Orleans. At least the apes would be a little over half way to where they'd end up in PLANET. But this looks like it's set up for the world of the TV series. Not good.

You'd be surprised what they can do. It doesn't have to BE the place.
It just has to look like it through a camera lens. And I can't think of

Not solely because im an oldtimer but its just what the Apes mean to so many and it just seems to be the best place to have an iconic film series be finnalized in an iconic city like NY,NY.
Ofcourse the original is a NY film in many ways and ofcourse its sequel. The written words that were spoken in "Rise" and the final shot of the arrival and departing board with the emphases on New York shows that even the least educated Apes fans "writers" know how it should be done. Whatever?
I just hope it ends in New York even for a new generation, it just feels right and it just seems like the right thing to do.
I just woke up and im alittle groggy so sorry. Take care, John M.

I remember looking at ads like that the first one-for a week or 2 in NY it played at the "Premeire" theatres (The State Two & the Orpheum) in Manhattan then moved to the "Showcase" theatres in Brooklyn and THAT'S when I got to see it with my Dad & my brother.
Bruce
I saw it at Loew's State 2 on June 13th, 1970. I remember seeing the trailer for "Kelly's Heroes" before it. I think BENEATH opened wide on June 24th.

I hope KOBA is the bad guy---although, being Apesters, we may actually be rooting for for him.I'd prefer an Apes movie, rather than Apes -v-Humans theme.I love the images of the ruined San Francisco---wouldn't it be cool if they popped over to Oakland to leave a computer behind......I think DAWN is looking extremely exciting so far.One worry I do have is whether, just maybe, the box office is getting sci-fi'd out.The Marvel movies are money making juggernauts that seem to be rolling over sci fi movies that have under performed at the box office, such as Prometheus, The Hobbit and Star Trek. John, Scrolls.
Well, if a movie isn't that good, it doesn't matter what genre it is. Bad Sci-Fi deserves to do badly. I didn't think much of OBLIVION, but I'm hoping AFTER EARTH is good. I also hope MAN OF STEEL plays more like the Sci-Fi movie it should be and less like just another superhero action flick. I haven't bothered with STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS because I've gotten the impression from some reviews that it plays like the best Sci-Fi movie Irwin Allen never made. I can wait for the Blu-ray on that one.
And PROMETHEUS sucked! There will be no sequel to that turkey.

"Oblivion" (produced by the "Rise" guys)
also did meh. Though I don't think "The Hobbit" qualifies, either as sci-fi or
as underperforming (it made over $ 1 billion worldwide - way to go, Andy
Serkis!). But it's true that more serious sci-fi is having trouble relative to
it's cost. The question is whether POTA has a box office ceiling or if it can
play with the big boys. Doesn't look like it for "Star Trek", IMAX and 3D or
not. It's struggling. Looks like soon all we're going to get is superheroes and
"Fast and Furious" movies.

.html.html While battle did have the "Ape shall not kill ape" subplot, I still consider the Apes vs Mutants the main storyline. Don't get me wrong, I too prefer the pure ape story, but I still see the main stories always as the Ape vs Human theme. It's just another example of Hollywood taking the safe route.
And as few humans as there may be in Dawn, I'm betting that its gonna be another Ape vs Human story. Dario
BATTLE's real story is about Ape vs Ape. ALL of the other movies are a combination---NONE of them are just Ape versus Human--each film has Apes and Humans working against evil doers, be those evil doers Ape or Human. To view ANY of the movies as just Ape v Human is, in my very humble opinion, missing the entire point of the whole series.John, Scrolls.

.htmlI'm already getting a bit nervous for DAWN--what would qualify as success? Is it 600, 800 or the billion? I've seen comments that 'Star Trek' remains a 'fanboy thing' and won't make the big mainstream crossover.I don't think APES is in that category, especially after the RISE critical success, but it could still be a miss if things don't click. Sci Fi in its' own right seems to be struggling but then again,APES has never seemed normal Sci Fi anyway.Just like with BENEATH, DAWN is the one that can establish a franchise. John, Scrolls.

.htmlThere's not a huge library of POTA books out there like there is for such popular franchises as "Star Wars", "Star Trek" or "Lord of the Rings". But POTA has managed to dip it's feet into some interesting takes. There's a book about it's politics, a collectibles book, a chronology, an encyclopedia, a well researched history. And now there's a book about it's philosophy. What's left? I think it would lend itself to one of those big coffee table books with nice color pictures and posters. And I've always thought it would be a natural for one of those "The Science of..." books.

That's cool. I'd prefer that too. Just saying that as Locations go .
. .
NOLA really IS an abandoned Major City. So It will have that
Feel.
I think we all want more than just a couple of shots of walking
through
a Matte Painting, CG or otherwise, and some soundstages on the Fox
Lot like last time. Though it might take them a month of Sundays to do
it.
