Not only were attendees of Comic-Con able to get
the "Dawn of the POTA" prequel comic book, but it looks like a groovy shirt was
available as well, featuring Caesar's window. Well, what'd you expect, an ape's
new suit?

.htmlHow enormous is DAWN going to be? With the cool publicity--especially the virus public warnings on the Net, this feels like a really cool campaign. Are we still in trilogy territory? If the Apes aren't clothed yet, maybe this story has another four movies to go before Taylor lands? John, Scrolls.

I bought that Comic-Con 2013 PLANET OF THE APES Blu-ray from Fox Connect and here's a complete scan of the cover. The plastic case isn't the mnormal blue (for Blu-ray), but black, and the case comes in a cardboard slipcover of the same design but showing more of the Heston/gorillas photo from the '68 campaign. The Blu-ray disc itself also features the reddish orange cover and Planet/Ape symbol. I've not been able to cozy up to those Apemania recreation covers from the 2008 Blu-ray releases, so this Comic-Con thing is now my go to BD for watching PLANET. The new cover isn't what I'd do, but at least Fox got the color right.
The content of the disc itself is exactly the same as the original BD, which was disappointing, but I'm still hoping that we'll get a remastered Blu-ray sometime around the release of DAWN, either theatrically or when it to comes to Blu-ray, and if so, I hope Fox goes with this same graphic design trend.

.htmlI found reference to another POTA movie that "Dawn of the POTA" director Matt Reeves worked on. One when he was a kid.
http://scriptcat.wordpress.com/2011/06/25/the-super-8-diaries-vol-I-the-genesis-of-a-preteen-filmmaker/
Am I crazy or would that make a cool DVD extra?
Another budding filmmaker who made a POTA movie when he was a kid was young Peter Jackson. He went on to spend a fair amount of time in the '90's trying to get a POTA movie made with Roddy McDowall. And Jackson is something of the Godfather of these new POTA movies as the founder of WETA and the guy who turned Andy Serkis on to motion capture (and gave him his first ape role).
So Matt Reeves had Mego POTA toys, wanted to be a POTA gorilla and made a Super 8 POTA movie. If that doesn't qualify him as one of us, I don't know what does. One of us! One of us! <.html

.htmlReeves certainly sounds like one of us---something Tim Burton never did.Fans aren't ALWAYS the best people to have making a movie, but, somehow with Apes it feels important to me that the director 'gets' Apes. His clear statement that we are on a journey to 'our' Apes world excites me.Any fans who moan and bellyache about CGI and 'the old days' need to wake up and realise THIS is how Heston's movie WOULD have been made if it was being made TODAY.WETA do astonishing work and DAWN, right here and now, IS APES. | Subject: OT: "Rise" director beaming up to "Star Trek"? |
.htmlWith J. J. Abrams off doing "Star Wars", Paramount needs a director for "Star Trek 3", pronto. The 50th anniversary of the franchise is 2016. Scuttlebutt sez that director might be Rupert Wyatt, who began the adventures of CG Caesar. I think this actually coming to pass is a long shot. Wyatt is very particular about what he directs (thus he and Fox didn't see eye to eye on "Dawn", as Wyatt has said himself). He even turned down an early version of "Rise". If he did sign on, I would assume it's because they'd give him a degree of freedom. The recent "Star Trek Into Darkness" was something of a mess so I think Wyatt signing on would be a good thing for it.
The irony being that the director of "Dawn of the POTA" is Matt Reeves, Abrams' pal of 30+ years and his "Cloverfield" director. With "Star Trek" composer Michael Giacchino doing the music for "Dawn". Abrams is still slated to be producer of "Star Trek 3", so it would all be a nice cozy coincidence. I don't think it will happen but it sure would be fun if it did.
In the '60's and '70's "Star Trek" and POTA were the kings of the sci-fi hill until that upstart "Star Wars" came along. They shared many of the same creators and were both trailblazers in sci-fi merchandising. And both have shown incredible longevity, going on 5 decades. I'll always consider them kin. I don't know what Wyatt would see in "Trek" that he didn't have with "Dawn", but I'm rooting for this to happen.

I'm hoping this rather lousy summer of movies means a really good one next year. I really kind of feel sorry for the industry. Imagine every year having to come up with these movies. They've gotten themselves into a real creative trap because you can't expect everyone to be creative geniuses every summer season, year after year. This summer has been a season of very tired stuff. I thought PACIFIC RIM would be great, but then I went to go see it. Now I have hopes for GODZILLA, but only slightly. Let's keep our fingers crossed that DAWN has the best script of the year. It's the script that's the thing.

Even if it's good it'll be hard to get people to go. The last "Spiderman" was mediocre so 2 is still a question mark. Even Marvel doesn't have big guns ("Capt. America 2", "Rise" beat the first one, and "Guardians of the Galaxy", an unknown). The big fish aren't that big really: "Fast 6" and "Transformers 4" (well, the last one passed $1 billion).
With Tom Rothman gone it looks like Fox is finally going for some home runs. "Dawn" and "X-Men" sound like huge productions and they are bothering to actually shoot both in 3D (like "Avatar" or "The Hobbit") instead of post-conversion. People have had a chance to catch up with "Rise" on DVD. So with the lack of competition and Fox's ambitions, could "Dawn" go all the way (all the way these days being $1 billion)? "Rise" got half way there without 3D and much in the way of spectacle (it mostly takes place in cages and labs). Of course it all comes down to the movies themselves.

<.html

I had a Trek vs APES debate on Facebook recently and challenged someone to bet DAWN wouldn't beat the last Trek movie by several hundreds on millions--the bet was not accepted!I think DAWN will be very, very big. And, perversely,I take a certain morbid comfort in movies tanking this year. When the box office is soft, Studios seek shelter in bankable franchises. So,DAWN will get the publicity and merchandise push RISE didn't have. There was NO UK premiere for RISE.I'm betting DAWN gets one.John, Scrolls.

Judy Greer talks about her character Cornelia (Caesar's wife, oops! spoiler!). I don't know about you, but some of my fave POTA apes are women.
Zira, Lisa (technically the first ape to say "No"). And the TV show rocked the ladies (I particularly remember Carsia, but I like bad girls).
Greer got to see an early representation of her character and sez: "She's so beautiful and regal and feminine. I really felt like I was looking at a lady".

No one would say "NO" to you, John. The original

most people are familiar with after 40 years.

I'm interested SPOILER WARNING!!! by Judy Greer's comments.Do these suggest that all the Apes are physically evolving into more human-like postures, as well as mentally evolving? God I LOVE having a sequel to speculate about!!! John, Scrolls.

I've found I like the U.S. theatrical version of CONQUEST best. I think they improved the editing of the riot and the final, and although you may disagree with the very final post-dubbed McDowall speech, I still think it works and does substantially change the movie.
The two versions on Blu-ray are identical until you get to the revolt at Ape Management. I do wish they'd left in the Theatrical version where the guy with the flame thrower gets his, but other than that, the riot in the "original version" (or whatever it's called) seems very much like a rough cut, and some of the violence is just over the top.

Oh, I have to disagree here with what is the "right" version of CONQUEST. For me there's something still very "not right" about the so-called unedited version -- namely, that it needs to be better edited. There's much that seems not final about the final. The music still needs to be thought out, the pacing, and the very end moment seems too abrupt, and I just don't get the impression that this is what was meant to finally go out as the final edit. I think Fox knew they were in trouble before they previewed this , and all the preview did was confirm that. I, myself, if I could go back in time and talk to Fox would be of the opinion that the unedited version now on Blu-ray shouldn't be released. It still needs something more.

.htmlEven this so-called unedited version of Conquest is wrong. Its a Japanese hybrid and not what was shown at Arizona 41 years ago.
Some of the violence is over the top but look at the films at that time, it, the violence, was all over the place.
Fox rushed the film so much Tom Scott wasnt allowed to come up with a good final cue and instead they used Jerry Goldsmiths scarecrow cue, which is great.
Also the final title card which simply says "The End" is missing.
One day maybe a correct Conquest will emerge but time is ticking,,,,,John M.

Does the graffiti with clothed, gun belt wearing Apes shown in the twitter pics maybe hint that DAWN will span quite a length of time? I'm totally at a loss. The graffiti looks like
apes to me but maybe it is "virus police" as some have suggested. With the apes
still not wearing clothes or talking, will the natives (POTA fans) get restless?
Sounds like there's going to be a lot of subtitles.

| Subject: "Battlestar Galactica" and POTA |
.htmlI've been watching some "Battlestar Galactica" this week (the 2000's version) and it always reminds me of POTA. Why? First of all because it's a dark, apocalyptic sci-fi story that I think any POTA fan would appreciate (dark but with characters, like POTA, that get you through it). Second, "Battlestar"'s main writer/producer is Ron Moore, who is a big POTA fan. He actually seeded POTA references in the show and talks about his love of POTA in the DVD commentaries.
Perhaps the biggest connection is the nickname given to a major character, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. She's called the "harbinger of death". If you don't know that as a POTA reference, you may hand in your POTA card and leave. I had the pleasure of bringing this up to the actress who played her, Katee Sackhoff, and telling her the POTA connection on the "Schmoes Know" podcast. Honestly, if I picked my Top 5 Science Fiction stuff, POTA and the new "Battlestar" would be in it. So telling her of the connection (she didn't know) was and is pretty cool to me.
So where does that leave you? Well, I'm just saying this so you'll seek out the new "Battlestar Galactica". I think POTA fans will see a lot that will resonate with them, and they'll get some fun POTA references as well.
