As frustrating the new Yahoo format has been for members. It is even more for owners and moderators. Much of the functionality that we had in the old format has been deleted in the new. Yahoo has promised to work with owners and moderators to improve the new format and restore some of the functions and features that were lost. So I would ask all members to stick with us for a little while longer before running off to a new forum. Many members have either left or decreased their contributions the last few years in favor of facebook. And some have urged that the group be moved over to facebook. However, even under the new format Yahoo still offers far more resources than facebook and other forums. We have a rich 15 year history here with databases, a large file archive and over 10,000 photos. So please stay with us. We have some great things coming in the future. Thanks.

I've added a discussion forum to my Apes website. I have not done this
to take away from this or any other Yahoo! group, and yes, I know there

Subject: OT: update on Rupert Wyatt "Trek"

  Rumors have spread that Rupert "Rise of the POTA" Wyatt will continue in the '60's sci-fi reboot biz with the next "Star Trek". You can't do better than go straight to the director of the last two Treks, J. J. (lifelong friend and movie partner of Matt "Dawn of the POTA" Reeves) Abrams. While promoting the release of "Star Trek Into Darkness" on DVD, he was asked that very question. While it's too soon in the process to choose a director, he said "we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert". Which is certainly not a no.
  After blasting into the stratosphere with "Rise" (which made more money than any "Star Trek" film) and not agreeing with Fox on the direction of "Dawn", Wyatt has yet to land on his next movie (he's reportedly very picky) so it'll be interesting to see what he chooses. Hopefully he'll live long and prosper.

  Summer is over (technically it ends on the 22nd but if you want to throw that at me I'll beat your ass). The next time it's summer it will be the summer of "Dawn of the POTA". It sounds like they're throwing a lot of money at it but of course the script is still a question mark. So let's get it out. Where do you want the sequel to go, based on what you dug (or didn't) with "Rise"?
  Me, I know they can't go too far into the future but I'd like to see the origins of what we know as the POTA: apes wearing clothes, talking, maybe the origin of Ape Shall Not Kill Ape. I'm sure some of you can be more inventive than that so let's get to it! Based on the pressures of leadership, should Caesar become a bad guy?

A number of members have had problems with Yahoo since the redesign went into effect. Many are getting emails but can't access the Yahoo site. For most signing out of Yahoo and then signing back in seems to have solved their problems. Yahoo has been made aware of these problems and promises to correct them ASAP. Thanks.

Film Series Launches with Sci-Fi Flick

September 29 • 7 PM

The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art kicks off its exhibition-related series, Films of 1968: Style, Revolution and the Future, with the science-fiction classic Planet of the Apes. The movie (and eight others released in 1968 ) will be shown in conjunction with the exhibition Modernism in Changing Times: Works From 1968.

In Planet of the Apes (112 min, trailer), a group of astronauts crash on an alien planet where the evolutionary process has left apes as the dominant species. Planet of the Apes is the first of several visions of the future that will be explored in this limited film series.

FILMS OF 1968: STYLE, REVOLUTION AND THE FUTURE

In conjunction with the exhibition, Modernism in Changing Times: Works From 1968, the Bechtler will present the limited series Films of 1968: Style, Revolution and the Future. The films will be shown in the museum or the adjoining auditorium at 7 p.m. Scheduled September 29 through December 15 are:

  Michael "Dawn of the POTA" Giacchino has done his share of Pixar movies ("The Incredibles", "Cars 2", "Ratatouille", an Oscar win for "Up"). But the composer has never scored Pixar's signature tale, "Toy Story", until now. Tonight on TV is "Toy Story of Terror", featuring his music. Here's a recent article where he talks about his approach to making images sing. Maybe it will provide clues to what he'll bring to POTA's already storied musical history.

I guess there's been no info anywhere on those October re-shoots that were scheduled for DAWN.  I'm of course interested, but I suppose it wasn't anything major.  I guess we're in a quite period now where the CGI is being worked on and not even serious editing can be done until enough of that is done.  I wonder how long after the beginning of 2014 it'll be before a teaser trailer?  Will the pattern of RISE, where I don't recall a teaser coming until the spring, be repeated with DAWN, or is DAWN more of a big tent movie than RISE was?

  "Dawn" is much more of a tentpole than "Rise" was. I think Fox was gun shy about how people would react to the CG apes and kind of slipped it in the back door.
  The teaser for "X-Men" comes out Oct. 30th and that has Dawn's old release date. Since "Dawn" comes out 2 months later, maybe we'll get something Decemberish? They should at least post the ComicCon trailer, which got a good reaction. I have a feeling something big's coming soon.

The third in the "Planet of the Apes" series begins with the Earth being destroyed in a massive nuclear explosion. Three apes escape the destruction by restoring a spaceship and flying away from the doomed planet, but they're caught in a shock wave and end up going through a time warp — a catchall for time travel in science fiction — created by the explosion.
What the "Planet of the Apes" crew is talking about sounds more like a wormhole, which is a theoretical tunnel through space-time that could also be used to travel faster than light or, possibly, travel forward or back in time.
According to current understanding, creating a wormhole requires large amounts of a theoretical substance called dark matter. Dark matter has nothing to do with a nuclear explosion. Now, it's true that no one's ever blown up the Earth to see what would happen, so it's impossible to say for sure, but it's pretty safe to say that the titular escape in "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" has no scientific basis, and just amounts to yet another example of Hollywood solving all its plot problems with explosions.
 
Is this supposed to be news?  POTA is more fantasy than real "hard Science Fiction."  Well, don't tell that to Patrick (for those that remember him).  At least it didn't mention time loops, and I thought Hollywood solves most of its plot problems with guns?

  Once upon a time there were these 3 movies called "Lord of the Rings". One of the breakout stars of those was a motion capture dude named Andy Serkis, who played Gollum. Andy went on to play an ape named King Kong for "Rings" director Peter Jackson. Jackson also helped found the FX company WETA, which made those movies possible. Andy and WETA went on to do the new POTA movies, including "Dawn". Besides, Jackson was one of the first people ever to try to do a modern POTA movie. Furthermore (sounds like a land in Middle Earth), "Dawn" and "Hobbit" were both filmed in 3D. Yes, I said filmed. Did I stutter? Did Spidey 2 film in 3D? I dunno, but I doubt it. They probably transferred it's ass into 3D after, like they do with most films. "Hobbit" and "Dawn" are like a Rhesus peanut butter cup, they'd taste good together.
  Are we going to just stand by and let this happen? Write your Congressman! Call President Obama! No, wait. All we have to do is talk about it privately among ourselves. The NSA will pick it up. This will not stand! But for now, we'll have to assume there's no God.

There's only one problem, "The Hobbit 2" and "DAWN" are being made by different studios.  Why would one studio want to promote another studio's picture?  Just because their SFXs are being done by the same company?  I don't think it works that way.

  "The Hobbit" and "Spider-man 2" are different studios (Warner Bros. and Columbia). But Spidey is reportedly the official "Hobbit" trailer.
  And when it comes to "The Hobbit", Peter Jackson has a big say. So, I dunno. I'm just putting this out there, Fox.
   Sometimes they like to throw on a trailer that is a big event, it'll tip the scales of people deciding to see a movie ("I get to see the Spider-man trailer too? I'm there!") and Spider-man is still bigger than POTA, even if the last one underwhelmed.

  OK, "Spider-man 2" is also filmed in 3D, and is being released in IMAX 3D (I guess a big deal). Actually, I couldn't find any confirmation of that, but the last one was. So it's presentation is probably more top of the line than Dawn's. "The Hobbit" has all the technical bells and whistles you could want, including release in the controversial 48 frames. So it's no slight on "Dawn", it's just "The Hobbit" and Spidey are a better match for the techies seeing them with all the bells and whistles. Though I still think "Dawn" is a better match as a movie with "The Hobbit". Maybe there will be a "Dawn" trailer in theaters in December to watch with "The Hobbit", it just won't be attached to the movie.
  Speaking of which, Fox's new "X-Men" trailer is reportedly mostly the Comic Con footage and is character-based, since they don't have any FX in yet. So I think the "Dawn" teaser trailer will be the same, the Comic-Con footage with maybe a few more shots. Maybe one or two ape shots but mostly establishing the human world. That would be fine, the Comic Con stuff went over well. If they did that we could have a trailer soon.

It rocks?  They aren't making a Flintstones, I hope.  So, are the apes supposed to be like a future Native American tribe thing, with war paint and all?  Boy, I hope DAWN doesn't just boil down to a Cowboys (humans) vs. Indians (apes) picture -- 'cause that'll really suck.
 
Question for everyone...  When the DAWN script gets "leaked" on-line, which may not happen but probably will, who plans to read it and spoil the movie for yourselves?  (If you agree that that's spoiling it.)   I'm not.  No!  No!  No!
