Subject: Booth Colman question
.html
.html.htmlI know it'd probably be pointless, but since it's the TV series 40th anniversary this year, it might be worth writing to FOX to ask them to reissue the TV series again, this time with EXTRAS...

Why I'm asking about Booth Colman is to see if anyone knows of any interviews he did talking about the APES series... I know he's up there in age and may not be up to doing any new interviews, but is there anything "archival" out there? I ask this so we'd have something to suggest to them to use as an extra...

Also, there has to be James Naughton footage they could use from the "BEHIND" documentary, and I don't think it'd be out of the question that Ron Harper would do an interview (and/or episode commentary)... Input from Booth would be good to include since he was a series co-star... And, any interviews/episode commentaries with surviving guest stars and series extras (such as Ron Stein, Eldon Burke, etc...) would also be good to suggest to the powers that be at FOX...

So, if anyone knows of anything to add to this list, please add to it so people can start getting ideas of what they'd want included should FOX do an anniversary edition of the show...

I interviewed Booth and he doesn't have much to say about the show. But enough for a documentary.
If "Dawn" is mega-successful, Fox will want stuff to release and the TV show on blu-ray is the next logical choice (that's what Spock told me). Maybe they would do interviews to make it an event. "Dawn" director Matt Reeves and composer Michael Giacchino are fans of the show and would have good interviews about it.

Yes, NECA has created figures for the new "Dawn of the POTA" (Koba is looking over my shoulder as I write this). But they've also got some coming out for the oldies but goodies. Here's your chance to win a set of the 3 Classic Apes that hit in July (Cornelius, Dr. Zaius and Gorilla Soldier). You'll be too busy watching "Dawn" to visit your local Toyz 'R Us anyway. NECA is having a caption contest based on their photos of the figures. But the contest ends June 16, so you'd better get over there. Move it, soldier!

Just discovered that this hardcover book will be coming out in October.  Other than what's on this Amazon page, I know nothing else about it.

Andy Serkis tweeted a pic with "Dawn" composer Michael Giacchino. Sounds like he unveiled some footage to journalists in the U.K. today. It's beginning to look a lot like POTA and Andy is it's biggest cheerleader.

Looks like there's lots of stuff, including a prequel novel for DAWN.

"POTA: A Celebration" is slated to be published in October. What is it? Dunno, but it looks like another history of the franchise. It'll be put out by Titan Books, a British company.

A new TV spot has arrived just as we enter the last month before the "Dawn" (unless Fox takes my advice and opens July 4rth to grab some holiday magic). A couple of new shots but mostly the interesting thing about it is the narration by Malcolm (Jason Clarke). Soon the "Dawn" push will be going into overdrive.

I'm at the point now where I don't want to see anymore, I really don't, so now it's time to go into ignore mode.  I'm not against the hype Fox is about to unload, they've got a franchise -- the only one I care about -- to build, but I just want to see the movie.

I read just yesterday that they're still working on a lot of CGI effects, so they're racing to make the July 11th date.  I think there's zero chance they'll change the release date to July 4th, as much as I'd like them to since I'm off from work that week, but "Oh, well."

Oh, I forgot.... there's is one "spoiler" I'd like to know, how does the Gary Oldman character get his eye glass prescription filled when all the optometrists are dead?  Having just gotten a new prescription myself, I have to wonder.

I think Oldman has said he likes to have something like a distinctive pair of glasses to wear to help him find the character.

My take is to enjoy what they put out now (sipping) instead of gulping the whole movie at once. They seem smart so I think they'll hold back the best stuff. I think we've seen pretty much what they're going to show except for those 5 or 6 scenes they showed journalists. We'll get those eventually. Mostly now it'll be interviews. Oh, and probably a third trailer.
It opens July 9th in some places so I don't think July 4rth is a big stretch. But they seem to have finalized July 11th in the ads.

I would guess he just has the glasses he had when things ended (better than nothing)? How does the camcorder still work? Where did all the apes (and horses) come from? They've got a lot of 'splaining to do, Lucy.

I've been in "ignore mode" for a long time fearing spoilers in trailers, news and interviews. But I did pick up the Dawn prequel novel bridging the two movies and I'm about half way through it. I'll be writing up a review for my blog but so far it's a good read. I figure it's best to read it now before  I see the new movie.

I'm about halfway through the prequel too but I've scanned it and it doesn't look like it covers more than the first month after "Rise". There's a lot of room for more. The author credits BOOM! comics so I think everybody's got it mapped out for more books and comics connecting "Rise" to "Dawn".

Thanks for posting that.  30 cents -- is it from Canada or Australia?

I love that cover from the Curtis/Marvel magazine.  I've been thinking about it a lot lately, since we're approaching the 40th anniversary of its release (July 7, according to http://planetoftheapes.wikia.com/wiki/1974).  I still remember being excited when I saw issue 1 on the newsstand – probably looking to see if a new issue of Famous Monsters was available!  Somehow, I hadn't been paying attention to the advertisements in my comic books (I think because I wasn't impressed by the artwork in the ad).  I was a fan of Ploog's art from Werewolf by Night, so I was immediately drawn to the look of "Terror."  The story (especially the first several issues) really resonated with me, too.  This may have been the first I heard about the PotA TV series, although I can't be sure (but where else would a kid learn of something like that in 1974?).  I loved that magazine, especially the amazing covers (even if they did play on a lot of questionable cultural imagery).  I eagerly, impatiently, awaited every issue of that magazine until its untimely, unexpected demise.

All in all, I think 1974 was a great year to be a 10-year-old PotA fan!

The Curtis mags were Australian. Here in Canada we had the regular Marvel mags.

It's understandable if some feel they've seen enough and want to just wait for the movie, but like Dirty Harry's punk, "I got's to know!".  Lately it seems to me the best trailers are the second ones. The first teases, the second gives the dramatic meat and the third usually showcases the FX (since more of it is done). Though I did think the third "Rise" trailer was the best. Here's a teaser for the trailer:

            .html
            .html
The twitter era is incredible as far as instant news. The director of "Dawn" (Matt Reeves) has announced that he "just finished. Done.". Are we to infer that "finished" means the movie is done or some phrase in his own language? Dr. Dixon: "Infer what you will, Mr. Chairman, I suggest you rephrase the question".
If the movie is done it might that mean it could come out on the 4rth of July? No, this is the LAST time I will bring this up. I've always thought that if things were going along swimmingly that Fox would decide to open it July 4rth. Why? Because if a movie is going to rock the box office the holidays help because people who might not go to a movie are looking for some fun on the holiday weekend and say, "Hey! Let's go to a movie!". There's nothing BIG opening this year on the 4rth of July and usually there is. It will be the second weekend of "Transformers 4" and perhaps they have the IMAX theaters sown up that weekend (I believe certain movies get them exclusive for 2 weeks). But Fox released "X-Men" with "Godzilla" having the IMAX theaters exclusively. If "Dawn" is great it might benefit Fox to release it on the holiday (an event) and then those who love it could see it again later in IMAX. But part of the big opening box office is the inflated prices for 3D/IMAX and the opening weekend is god (for the perception of whether a movie is worthy). So would "Dawn" have a bigger opening weekend on the 4rth (holiday, more movie going) or on the 11th (IMAX factored in). That's what the studio has to decide.
And even though the director is finished (though a director is never finished) They will probably tweak the CG as long as they can. Would an extra week make any difference? No one can say except those who are working on it. All I know is that most of the biggies this summer have stopped around $ 700 million worldwide or less. I would love to see "Dawn" go to the storied $ 1 billion level and I think it has a shot because it's unique but has a concept and past that people can latch onto. And not much competition. So any advantage could help, including the 4rth of July. Fin.

I think Fox more likely figures that since July 4th falls on a Friday this year, most people would be out going to fireworks and other such weekend things (like drinking, smoking weed and, if lucky, screwing), going to a movie being not one of the more important activities for such a holiday.  I pretty much believe that the MBA rocket scientists that wear the suits at the studios at least know something about marketing, hence their fancy degrees and ridiculous salaries.  Jeff Krueger, you simply must learn to trust the foxiness of the wolves at Fox.  I personally wish that it was opening on the weekend of the 4th, because I have the week off and therefore much opportunity for theatre going, but I've come to accept that it just isn't going to be so.  You need to accept it too, Mr. Jeff Krueger.

By the way, Mr. Jeff Krueger, what is your plan for seeing DAWN?  (Just curious.)  Are you going to be a your favorite IMAX 3D theatre first thing Friday the 11th or what until the next day or later?  My guess is you'll be the first at the box office, unless you order your tickets online.  What is the theatre that you'll be going to?  (Just curious.)  I haven't yet made up my mind if I'll go on the 11th, as I'll have to take the day off from work, but I may do it.

July 4rth is proven as a hot commodity for releasing a movie. You'd think Christmas Day would be a terrible time to release a movie. Surely people have better things to do on Christmas Day than go to a movie (and don't call me Shirley). But it's one of the top movie-going days. The fact is movies are a great place to gather on holidays, then come home and do the traditional stuff. And Hollywood is currently reeling that the Spideys and the Godzillas aren't doing as well as they'd hoped. So don't tell me marketers know what they're doing, Mr. Smarty Pants! If Fox is going to release it on July 11th (which they probably are, since they've spent a lot of money promoting that date) it's because they are avoiding "Transformers" and it's lock on IMAX screens or they just aren't sure "Dawn" can live up to the July 4rth hype (there would be a lot of attention if it moved there). Fox has notoriously undervalued POTA (and a $1 billion haul would be a great vindication for those of us who've stayed with it). Probably "Dawn" will stay with July 11 unless Fox sez, "Wow, this is a really good movie!" and feels it could create a holiday sensation. And of course if the movie is really "done" in terms of CG (the director's job is to approve the CG so I don't see how he could be "done" if it isn't).
I'm seeing "Dawn" with a group of movie buddies so I won't be seeing it opening night but I will be reading reviews and spoiling myself silly.

I think the actors supply their own voices to the apes to keep fidelity to the performances. I remember hearing Serkis did the voice in "Rise".

Hero Complex will host a free screening of the new Fox film, presented in Dolby Atmos, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood.
