So, Jeff Krueger, are you
really planning on attending this? If so, hope you'll have a report and
spoiler-free review.
Hero Complex will host a free screening of the new Fox film, presented
in Dolby Atmos, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in
Hollywood.
Following the screening, Serkis, Oldman and Reeves will take the stage
for an extended Q&A about the making of the movie, which is due to arrive in
theaters July 11.

.htmlFrom Aintitcool.com:DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES: FIRESTORM The Official Movie Prequel NovelWriter: Greg Keyes
Publisher: Titan Books
Reviewer: MajinFu
Picking up after a band of apes disappears into the misty Redwoods, FIRESTORM is the bridge between the first two cinematic entries in the legacy of a chimp named Caesar and his primate pals. If you're reading this, you've probably seen RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and you remember a bunch of apes tearing loose on the Golden Gate Bridge and leaving all of San Francisco at the mercy of a brain-enhancing fart gas invented by James Franco.
If he only knew, maybe Caesar would have stayed in the city… FIRESTORM connects the end of 2011 film RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES with its upcoming sequel DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, set to release nationwide in just a couple of weeks. The book adheres closely to the tone of the last movie, following several characters in and out of San Francisco in the wake of the last movie's events. It was interesting to see ripples from the film's climax and the way new characters interpret or understanding the plot of RISE, like how many people were aware that a helicopter crashed over the Golden Gate bridge, but not many who knew of the silverback gorilla who died in the crash.
Did you know a group of apes is called a "shrewdness?" How appropriate considering what Caesar and his crew show themselves to be capable of in FIRESTORM. Since the pandemic at the end of the movie doesn't leave a lot of room for progress in the city, we spend a good deal of time getting to know more of the simian cast. Some of the best new content is in the form of flashbacks such as with Koba. You may remember Koba with the scar who joins Caesar late in the film after he and his crew ransack a research facility. Here you learn a good deal of his backstory and it's as heartbreaking as that ugly mug would imply, and phrased with chilling simplicity. Plus, any chance to read more about my man the former circus orangutan Maurice is always welcome.
The story also contains some political intrigue in the form of Dreyfus, a character played by Gary Oldman in the next movie that looks to play an important role as a leader of the human survivors in a viral San Francisco. It's difficult to tell how well this connects to the next movie since it won't be released for another couple of weeks but from what happens in FIRESTORM it's about to blow up.
RISE was notable for having computer-generated characters that were frequently more sympathetic and charismatic than their boring human counterpoints, and the same can be said for FIRESTORM. Still, the book does a good job of touching on the human drama in a way that's not too hammy or disconnected thanks to a certain character named Malakai who hails from the Congo and is almost as interesting as some of the ape characters.
This was really a fun read and like the best thrillers was pretty hard to put down. You could easily finish FIRESTORM before the release of the next movie and if you're an APES enthusiast like me, you will know doubt dig it. Books that are tie-ins to movies don't have the best track record, but this as an exception, with great pacing, some deep character building, and smart writing all around. Plus it's got me hyped for the next movie so from a marketing perspective I'd call that a total success.

I've already RSVPed for the "Dawn" screening in
Hollywood Monday with Matt Reeves, Andy Serkis and Gary Oldman. But before that,
Reeves, Serkis and Oldman will bring "Dawn" to Austin and the Q & A
will be livestreamed to all. Here's the link for those in the area who want
tickets.
Why are they doing all this two weeks away
from release? Because people are thick headed and "Dawn" is still under the
radar. They believe in the movie and want to get the buzz going.
The "Dawn" premiere is Thursday 6/26 in San Fran
(ape-propriately) and there will be plenty of online chats coming from
that. <.html <.html

I'll bet Fox isn't happy about it.
So, I guess with the SF premiere being tomorrow, we'll start getting word-of-mouth about DAWN by this weekend.

Under the radar meaning people aren't really
talking about it or expecting much from it (a commercial just means Fox paid for
air time). In all those "Summer previews", what have you, "Dawn" wasn't really
talked about. There were more expectations for "Godzilla", which is barely
limping past what "Rise" made. It's time to put the planet on notice the
apes are in town.

Looks like Gary Oldman was on Jimmy Kimmel last night. Oldman has his current problem to deal with, but I wished I'd seen it to see what's said about DAWN. After next week is when actors from the movie should start popping up on all the shows, so check your listings.

They did show a clip that was new to me, the apes taking weapons from some type of arsenal, and an extended version of the apes on horseback charging a barricade set up the humans, and firing automatic rifles.

Apes have always mean Panavision to me. Gary Oldmans remarks are perfectly fine and honest and exactly how I was raised to be-Honest. Im half Jewish and found nothing he said wrong. Its honesty thats all, not brutal and if its anything its just politically incorrect and so what. We are so worried about what a person says but he can do and be as violent as he wants and thats alright in America. Incredible! You see why this country is not so well liked in the rest of the world.
So its July 11th that the movie premiers, am I right about that? Its kind of like the old days in that the ape movie is playing in San Francisco and slowly spreading out in a not so linear fashion. Ill get back in the posting groove soon enough. The man that got me into the Ape movies five decades ago, My loving father, passed away a few months ago so I have not felt like doing much of anything. I watch the original Apes films and all I do is remember my father and how he took me to see them all as they premiered in almost yearly fashion. How my father would quote lines from the films and make everyone laugh while he was swimming in our huge gunite pool which I could never afford now.
In a way he reminds me of everything that I love and makes it almost unbearable now to enjoy because they all remind me of him. I know its silly, I should have the opposite feelings, feelings of joy and a big thankyou for encouraging me to love films and music, but a shrink would know what Im writing about. Enough of this catharsis. Take care everyone and lets hope this movie is as good as Fox thinks it is. John M. <.html

Jack Giroux (Film School Rejects): "...
fantastic. An ambitious, character-driven drama that totally nails the spirit of
the original series.... Giacchino's score for "Dawn" would've made Jerry

Devin Faraci (Badass Digest): "... absolutely
awesome, incredibly smart and has a truly Apes-worthy ending... very much a redo
of "Battle". But much better".
Steven Weintraub (Collider): "Brilliant direction,
amazing performances and a great script make "Dawn" one of the year's best
films... And the score...is perfect".
Scott Collura (IGN): "...truly
great". <.html <.html

anyone say it sucks yet. Welles compares it to "Empire Strikes Back", a dark
middle chapter. And that Andy Serkis steals the show again. My own opinion

"(Dawn is) a film that digs deep, that challenges
not only the notion of what a studio blockbuster looks like but also how sequels
are supposed to work in a commercial world, a movie about real ideas with a
spectacular sense of character and mood. "Dawn" is not just a good genre movie
or a good summer movie. It's a great science-fiction film full-stop and one of
the year's very best movies".

There's only one from PLANET, two from BENEATH and ESCAPE, three from CONQUEST, one from BATTLE, two from the Burton mess, three from RISE. There are some nice color stills from PLANET, but we also get a 12X16" photo of James Franco and some silly plague posters -- or something -- at the end. It's mostly just a waste of paper and time.

Just a reminder that "Dawn" will screen today in
Austin, Texas (5:15 Central Time; I guess 3:15 West Coast and 6:15
East) and afterwards there will be a Q & A with Matt Reeves, Andy
Serkis and Gary Oldman. I guess during that they will give a certain word and if
you email that word you could win a Mondo POTA poster.

I have a local Barnes and Noble and would never
order a book sight unseen (maybe if it got good reviews). Sorry you paid
good money and were disappointed.

There's only one from PLANET, two from
BENEATH and ESCAPE, three from CONQUEST, one from BATTLE, two from the Burton
mess, three from RISE. There are some nice color stills from PLANET, but
we also get a 12X16" photo of James Franco and some silly plague posters -- or
something -- at the end. It's mostly just a waste of paper and
time.

That means a review should be posted at AintitCool in a day or two.
So far, mostly raves or near raves for DAWN, but there is one somewhat negative review linked to at Rotten Tomatoes.

I looked for it at Barnes and Noble, but it wasn't there, but if it was it would be wrapped in plastic and you still wouldn't know the contents.
Anyway, not worth the money, though I only paid $18 for it.

"I'll tell you this: no eternal reward will
forgive us now for wasting the dawn".

I wnt to the "Dawn of the POTA" screening with Q
& A at the famous Chinese Theater in Hollyweird tonight (put on by the Los
Angeles Times' "Hero Complex" and presented by Dolby, who bought us popcorn and
drinks). It was in 3D with the great Dolby Atmos sound system.
So let's get the bottom line. This is how the
movie ends: >CENSORED!<. I know, I couldn't believe it either!I'm still
trying to process the movie. I loved it and it brings POTA storytelling to a new
level. But, I dunno, maybe the movie could've used more colors in it's palette?
The humans were kind of bland, which is par for the course in POTA except for
Taylor, Hasslein and the TV show astronauts. The actors are personable and that
ups the humans' game, as it did in "Rise". But we're there for the apes and as
usual they steal the show.
Despite the director saying it's not a war movie,
yes it is and a painful one. There's a melancholy to the movie that I loved but
it's not what people expect in their summer movies. Reeves kept saying he
couldn't believe they let him make this movie. It's a real loss of innocence
story, "Battle" writ large (and epic). I guess it's the "Battle" we always
wanted with plenty of "Battle" Easter eggs (as well as a cool nod to "Beneath",
the director's favorite "Apes" sequel).
There were two touches that stood out for me. The
surprise and terror of the apes when they realize what war is, even for those
who want war. And second, the ape speech is very well done. Science tells us
that apes can't speak because of their physiology. The apes here struggle with
their speech as if their bodies are changing. That made it easier to accept than
if they just started speaking.
The movie is pretty bleak (not that there's
anything wrong with that) but there is a lighter moment that the audience loved.
Let's just say it takes "the weight" off the story for a few minutes. There's
some moments in the movie where the subtext seems to be: the things human beings
can do is pretty miraculous sometimes. Oldman articulated this in the Q & A.
POTA generally seems to be down on humans but that thought gives it some balance
(like the wide-eyed wonder of Cornelius and Zira in "Escape").
That's all I can say for now until people see the
movie. The Q & A didn't really have any big revelations (no audience
questions were taken and the guests didn't linger after a long road of promotion
the last few days; they're exhausted). The director noted his fave "Apes" were
PLanet68, "Beneath" and the TV show ("Battle" wasn't mentioned &
it's presence is felt in the movie). He also talked about how long it took to
get the ape shots (the last shot of Caesar in the movie came in just a week
before the premiere) and how tough it is to make a movie without knowing what
the final version will look like until the FX are in. Andy Serkis said the
horses did not like it when their riders played apes, which caused trouble. I
would've liked some audience questions and maybe the guests would've too for
some variety.
But, a terrific movie and a great
night.

I dunno either. Perhaps a bit too hyperbolic, but they are supposed to sell the picture. I like when the voiceover says the title rather than have it silent, but, Jeff, would you in all seriousness say that DAWN was a "cinematic masterpiece"? I would say that takes a bit of qualifying.

Rolling Stone has done a history of the POTA
saga:
Looks like the Apes onslaught has begun over a
week before it's release. "Dawn" is all by itself. "Transformers" is old news.
Nothing big is opening on the 4rth of July ("Tammy"?). "Fast and Furious" got
pulled from the front end, "Jupiter Rising" from the back end. Blockbuster-wise,
it's Apes, Apes, Apes in July. <.html <.html

I picked up the "Dawn of the POTA" official movie
magazine today at Barnes & Noble. I had sticker shock when I saw it costs
$15. But it's very thick, more like a book. Is it worth it? I think so,
especially for fans of the old "Starlog" magazine. That's what the articles and
the design remind me of. But where they would drag out a movie over several
issues, it's all here in one place. It pretty much covers everything from
interviews with the actors and director to beautiful full page production
designs, interviews with all the behind the scenes honchos (the FX guys, the
costume designer, the art director). It's got an article about real apes, one
about pandemics (I guess measles has killed more people than any of them).
There's even a POTA quiz. Did you know "Rise" was shipped to theaters under the
code name "Salad"? They even interview "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt.
I wouldn't call the interviews in depth, but they
aren't fluff either. Again, "Starlog" is the model to keep in mind. Lavishly
illustrated, a nice keepsake (unless you wind up hating the movie). They even
asked the writer about how "Rise" should 've been called "Dawn" and "Dawn" is
more like the rise (though actually the apes don't rise in "Dawn" either). Mark
Bomback the writer sez: "What we liked about (the title) "Dawn" is two things.
It's evocative of nature, and this movie is set in a lot of nature, half the
film is set in the woods. It also suggests (moving forward). ("Rise") is
the genesis, so this is really how it gets underway. This is the first big
step". The director sez: "...the title "Dawn" was very apt, because it was this
exciting idea about the dawning of a new species - a coming into
being". <.html <.html

This 4th of July weekend hasn't been that spectacular for the box office. Think DAWN may have made it better? Perhaps not.

Anyone else finished reading the DAWN prequel book "Firestorm"? I didn't think that much of it, but it wasn't bad, just not very interesting.
Anyway, I have a question for Jeff Krueger, having seen DAWN. In "Firestorm" they have the Dreyfus character (played in DAWN by Gary Oldman) very much know about the apes and how many there are and kind of what they are, but in the trailers Dreyfus seems quite ignorant of the apes until they're discovered in the woods. Is this the way it is in the movie, Jeff?
Also, Jeff, did you stink around for the entire end credits? I'm wondering if there's something shown at the very end, as they did with the last X-MEN.

.htmlI've often said that the summer of 1974 was the summer of POTA. It began with the Go Ape! marathon at theaters and ended with the premiere of the TV series in early September. That was also the summer when Fox launched the POTA merchandising blitz giving is numerous POTA toys, games and models. One of those items was Marvel's Planet of the Apes magazine which hit newstands 40 years ago this month. To celebrate that anniversary, the first issue is available for a limited time on the group website: Marvel And don't forget the Marvel Archive featuring all of Marvel's comic adaptions of the classic films: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/MarvelMain/Marvel.htm <.html

Subject: Summer 2014: the story so far
"Dawn of the POTA" comes out this week. So here's
the latest Box Office Mojo numbers to take the temperature of the summer so
far:
1. X-Men 5: $725 million worldwide - Fox is
already at the top. "Dawn" can only make things sweeter.
2. Capt. America 2: $712 million worldwide
- It's been a quality year for Marvel superheroes.
3. Amazing Spidey 2: $704 m ww - ...except
this one.
4. Maleficent: $630 m ww - What
the...?!
5. Transformers 4: $576 m ww - Quite a haul
after a little over a week. Will pass "Avatar" this week as the biggest hit of
all time in China (the biggest hit in China in 2014 was "The Monkey King" until
this). Best bet to reach $1 billion worldwide (unfortunately).
6. Godzilla: $489 m ww - Has barely passed the
$482 m ww of "Rise", so not the monster hit some thought it would be.
7. Rio 2: $481 m ww - Not a summer movie but
close enough. The original "Rio" wuz Fox's biggest hit of 2011 over "Rise".
Probably this year the apes get revenge.
8. LEGO: $467 m ww - Again, not summer but a
biggie early in the year.
9. "Edge of Tomorrow": $340 m ww - Some sci-fi
fans are mourning that this didn't do better but Tom Cruise will be
OK.
10. "How To Train Your Dragon 2": $293 m ww - Another
shocking underperformer. Comedy is easy, box office is hard!
Where will "Dawn" stack up? We'll find out
soon! <.html <.html

I'm not receiving e-mails this weekend for some
reason but I can send them. Rory asked if Dreyfus is ignorant of the apes in the
movie, unlike the book "Firestorm". Yes, he doesn't know anything about the apes
or that they even exist. Nor do any of the humans.
As for a credits stinger, nooooo. There isn't. At
the end of the credits there's some ape noises but that's it. But note how the
movie opens and how it ends. Perfect circle. No need for anything
else.
And happy birthday,
Dave! <.html <.html

The $40 hardcover "The Art of Rise & Dawn of
the POTA" is supposed to hit today.
The "Dawn" movie score has hit iTunes today and
the physical CD will reportedly arrive July 15th.
The official magazine is already
available.
And of course the movie is right around the
corner. It's time to Go Ape, ladies and gentlemen. <.html <.html

.html Awesome! Thanks.
Although I still ended up pulling out my 40 year old copy today. As I posted a week or so ago, I still remember how excited I was to get that magazine. I absolutely loved Terror on the Planet of the Apes -- although after the first story arc or two, it felt more and more fantastic. By the time they got to those cyborg apes, I wasn't quite as thrilled. But so many of the other series and one-shots were highly entertaining. A few years ago I went through each series in turn. I may very well end up doing that again this summer... ... Then there's the 40th anniversary of the PotA TV series in September (I'm sure the first time I heard anything about the series was in PotA magazine). (And, of course,
Dawn on Saturday!) 2014 may be almost as great a year to be a PotA fan as 1974! Almost. Scott <.html
