Dawn lacked Easter eggs, then, other than >names< such as Caesar and Maurice (for the Orangutan) ?   The Eager egg topic's touched inquired about in this neat new apes trivia video:

It's understandable that nothing resembled the underground scenery in Beneath, considering how the two movies took place on opposite U.S. coasts.   It would have been nice to have had more Easter eggs though.   I wonder what they could have been, without seeming out-of-place though?   I'd have enjoyed a reference to Taylor's mission that was lost in space, for one thing...   :-)

A good weekend to all, from Taylor in Houston...

On Thursday, "Dawn of the POTA" passed "Amazing Spiderman 2" at the domestic box office. You heard right, a POTA movie beat Spiderman. Whether it can do it on the worldwide stage remains to be seen, but good job to Caesar and his cohorts. That's a wrap for "Dawn" on the domestic front. It's #7 for the summer.

Kind of amused by the Star Trek/Apes crossover article.

This story takes place just after the original "Planet of the Apes," but before the major events of "Beneath the Planet of the Apes."

I guess that means it'll all take place over the course of just a few days.

Poor Planet of the Apes, where consistent continuity goes to die.

Taylor and Zaius and everyone else will have their memories cleared so that the events of BENEATH can go ahead and the earth can be destroyed and.... wait.... what earth is this?   How can apes take over and yet earth has a Federation that builds starships and.... Dawn nearly doubles Rise's TOTAL China revenues during merely its 1st weekend of release...

Won't it be neat to see how well Dawn does in Japan?

On a different front, admittedly Dawn didn't catch POTA 2001 domestically when adjusted for inflation:

But Dawn substantially outperformed POTA 2001 globally:

Overall it seems that Dawn has outperformed any of the rest globally.   Granted, it's apparently unknown how much the original made abroad:

It wasn't as efficient to distribute movies abroad decades ago, and piracy was more prevalent in some ways too.   What I mean is that there previously weren't such harsh penalties for movie theaters not reporting total revenues accurately, or copying and peddling pirated versions.

At any rate, the franchise is alive & well GLOBALLY.   :-)    It may be impossible to stop making Apes films after the 2016 installment's released.   Hopefully they won't dilute the franchise though.   When folks see that Stargate's going to be on television, they yawn.   Too much of a good thing isn't so good.   But wow have they hit the ball out of the park repeatedly with the prequels, huh?   :-)

Mr. Heston would be proud...

Happy Labor Day weekend from Houston, TX (where George Taylor likely trained)

Happy Labor Day weekend from Houston, TX (where George Taylor likely trained)

appreciated the experience of watching the movies more because- if you

Can someone please advise me what amount in US dollars should be the most somebody should pay for this vintage Maurice toy POTA puppet by Mattel from 1968 ? (see attached)

Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

That's not a Planet of the Apes puppet.  Any vintage orange orangutan toy from Planet of the Apes would be called "Dr. Zaius", for "Maurice" is only character in the modern rebooted planet of the apes.
It seems your Maurice is part of Mattel's "Jabber Jaws" line of puppets. He originally had a "talking pull string" that came out of one of his ears. One sold on eBay for around 40$

.html.htmlI'm just wondering where people are buying their NECA Apes figures? I'm asking because when I checked at Toys R Us, they had none in stock and they seemed pretty clueless about their existence to begin with...

If I remember right, Jeff (Veetus) said he bought his Koba at TRU, and a guy on the Mego board said he seen them at TRU also, and when I checked awhile ago, they were listed on the TRU website so I figured all TRU would have them, but they didn't have them locally... Also, on the Mego board, a guy started a thread where he said he asked about them at his TRU and was told by an employee that "no employees of the store order nor stock Neca products (declaring "Oh we don't even touch that stuff!), and went on to say a representative of Neca comes in and decides what, and how many of each product, will be made available to said store"... Since some people have stated they bought (or at least seen) NECA Apes figures at TRU stores, then if what that guy was told is true, then it's pretty hit and miss as to if all TRU stores carry them... Did people here have trouble finding them at their local TRU?

My local Toyz 'R Us carries NECA but only in small amounts. I think I bought the only Koba and Maurice they ever carried. I don't think they have carried POTA Classic. Though they do have a few of the tiny Cornelius "scalers".  http://necaonline.com/47136/licenses/pop-culture/dc-comics/scalers-collectible-mini-figures-wave-2-assortment/
They've got a few Predators, Godzillas and Pacific Rims. I have to assume NECA is not a big seller. I don't know why. They look great and the price is reasonable. Those junky Star Wars and Ninja Turtles fill up the shelves (and don't seem to sell either). Maybe around Christmas will be a good time to go Ape shopping at TRU, especially with the "Dawn" DVD out.

A lot of the bigger comic shops also carry action figures (and a lot of other non-comic stuff for that matter) and that's where I get mine. I even pre-ordered but the guy at the store said they would have stocked 3 or 4 of each figure regardless. This particular store even has one employee who is their "action figure" guy who always keeps himself informed with all the news and releases coming up so he can be sure to order stuff.

Ironically, my own comic shop where I order all my comics from, does not bother with the action figures.

If you can't find them, start calling the shops around. They'll tell you right over the phone if they have them and will likely even set them aside for you for a short period.

.html.htmlThat's where I did end up buying the classic APES figures, at the local comic store (the one and only one in town actually)... They had the DAWN figures too, but I didn't buy them, I probably would bought them if I could have got all three in one shot, but Caesar was sold out: The owner of the store wasn't there last night, had he been, I would have asked if he could have ordered a Caesar and held the other two until it came in... I never seen the guy who was helping out, so I didn't want to ask him.... But, at least I know I can buy them at the comic store if it comes down to it...

Entertainment Earth usually has a decent price for them. I ordered two set of the classic figures and i think it was cheaper than buying them one at a time. I only found one Caesar at TRU. Everything else was sold out. Ordering from EE confirms you will get them.

I'm just wondering where people are buying their NECA Apes figures? I'm
asking because when I checked at Toys R Us, they had none in stock and they
seemed pretty clueless about their existence to begin with...

If I remember right, Jeff (Veetus) said he bought his Koba at TRU, and a
guy on the Mego board said he seen them at TRU also, and when I checked awhile
ago, they were listed on the TRU website so I figured all TRU would have
them, but they didn't have them locally... Also, on the Mego board, a guy
started a thread where he said he asked about them at his TRU and was told by an
employee that "no employees of the store order nor stock Neca products
(declaring "Oh we don't even touch that stuff!), and went on to say a
representative of Neca comes in and decides what, and how many of each product, will
be made available to said store". .. Since some people have stated they bought

There's been no official release date announced for the "Dawn of the POTA" blu-ray but people are guessing Dec. 9th. As usual for high profile releases, deciding whether to get it or not isn't the only decision. There's also the question of WHERE you're going to get it. Stores have different ways of saying, "Buy it here!" and "Don't listen to them, buy it from us!".
So far the various releases are sketchy but they are starting to take shape. Target is offering a NECA gorilla figure with the blu-ray. Is it an exclusive version? I dunno, they say it is but it looks rather run of the mill so far. Maybe they're still working on it. But it does look like it will be cheap. It doesn't seem like they're charging much more than if you just bought the blu-ray alone. Meanwhile, Best Buy will have it in a nice "steelbook" case. No word yet what Walmart is planning.
Then there's the King Kong of "Dawn" exclusives, for those who want to get a head in life. Designed by WETA themselves, it's a bust of Caesar (with war paint) plus a 32 pg. book and 4 collector cards. Oh yeah, and a "Dawn" blu-ray (as well as "Rise"). Suggested price: 130 bananas.
Someone will probably have exclusive discs of material not on the set itself. Things will firm up as we get closer but still, so many ways to go.

Although people are predicting Dec. 9th for the "Dawn" blu-ray release, it looks so far that countries are getting it in late November, around Thanxgiving.
When all is said and done, let's not forget that's what I predicted. Fair is fair.  : )

(or at least seen) NECA Apes figures at TRU stores, then if what that guy
was told is true, then it's pretty hit and miss as to if all TRU stores carry
them... Did people here have trouble finding them at their local TRU?

I ordered them from Entertainmentearth.com, per Tim's recommendation. Haven't opened them, though.

This December (I assume) when DAWN hits DVD/Blu-ray, Target is supposed to be selling a NECA gorilla soldier with the video. I'll be getting that if I can just to get another NECA figure, but there's no guarantee I'll find it.

That's where I did end up buying the classic APES figures, at the local
comic store (the one and only one in town actually)... They had the DAWN
figures too, but I didn't buy them, I probably would bought them if I could have
got all three in one shot, but Caesar was sold out: The owner of the store
wasn't there last night, had he been, I would have asked if he could have
ordered a Caesar and held the other two until it came in... I never seen the guy
who was helping out, so I didn't want to ask him.... But, at least I know I
can buy them at the comic store if it comes down to it...

Do you know if this Gorilla Soldier will be an exclusive, or will it just
be the one we already have (or one of the two from the upcoming two pack),
      possibly in its own packaging?

Either way, hopefully this should be easy to find, there's two Target
      stores here...

If you mail order it you'll get one with the three classic apes on the cover.  I bought it at a Barnes and Noble and it has Ghostbusters on the cover, but the APES cover is a page inside.  The articles are good and one that defends the sequels as better movies than most think they are should please Chris Lawless.

It looks like you have to preorder it to get it. That's smart. People (like me) usually wait until the DVD comes out and get the best deal. The key is to lock people in before they see all the sales. But I'll still wait and see.

I'm interested in that it looks like a great deal.  I get the Blu-ray plus the figure, an extra to the one I already have.  I might just pre-order it from Target and not have to travel to the store.

From the looks of things, the Gorilla Soldier that'll be included with the TARGET release of the "DAWN/POTA" Blu-ray is the same as the one that's out there right now... The difference will be the exclusive packaging:

.html.htmlIt's cool that they're offering the figure with exclusive packaging and all, but it really doesn't make sense including a figure from the original film(s) when the Blu-Ray is for a film from the rebooted franchise... You'd think they would have had an exclusive Caesar since he's the ape that's actually in "DAWN"...

Yeah, it's a bit weird, but I'm glad they're doing it. I'm sure many of the younger folk don't really know about the classic series (or very little at least) and this may intice some to seek it out. Although I doubt Fox put that much thought into it, in the end it can't hurt the franchise.

40 years ago today wuz the premiere of the POTA TV show. Everyone has their own path to being a POTA fan but I'm not sure what my relationship to POTA would be today had it not been for that show: the weekly dose at an impressionable age, the accompanying merchandising blitz (Christmas 1974). It left a big impression and I'm sure there's others with a similar story.

My first exposure to POTA was the premiere of "Escape" on TV earlier that year. It blew me away but I'm not sure if my mania would've taken hold without the show. Probably it would've been a series of movies I loved and would still have on blu-ray. But the TV show indoctrinated me and let me play in that world for a spell. It was a pretty weird and wonderful place to visit every week. Late '74 and POTA are so tangible I can still feel it.

And then, as suddenly as it had appeared, it was gone. And it left a void. Nothing could replace it. Not the cartoons (which I couldn't get into; they were cartoons, dammit, not the realism of the makeup, sets and swell characters). Not the occasional showings of the movies on TV. Had the show stuck around maybe it wouldn't have felt so special. But it came, rocked my world and left. And led me down a path where I'm typing this at 2 AM.

40 years later I still love the show. It hasn't fared well in public opinion and I can see it's faults. But I love the characters, love the cast, love many of the stories. I would put it's best moments up against anything POTA has to offer. And I'm damn glad it came along. It gave this kid a fascinating window on the world. I've said before that the older I get the more relevant POTA seems: as a mirror that reflects who we are and what we're capable of, both good and bad; and also our relationship to nature, the scientific and sociological themes. And 40 years ago today was the beginning of my education. Thank you Virdon and Burke for making the trip.

.html.htmlAgreed, classic APES is what it's all about... They can talk about "the world of the '68 original" all they want, but I think anyone who really feels they're going to end up with an Astronaut Taylor being hunted in a cornfield in the year 3978 needs to seriously rethink that... I mean they keep harping on about the Caesar character and this whole "Caesar dynasty" thing and how he's going to be so important to apes down the line-Tell me, where in PLANET is there any emphasis on some ape from the past named Caesar? I can tell you where: Nowhere... Their most important ape is The Lawgiver, who is an orangutan, not a chimp! Now there will probably be somebody who's going to come along and say The Lawgiver was originally a chimp and that some ape history revisionist changed it to an orangutan, which of course is BS but I can see it happening... Add to that there's no way the crew that might land in a future film could be the same crew that we see in PLANET: They messed that whole thing up by doing the brain-dead thing of using the names of Taylor's crew as "names" in RISE... And, as successful as these new films might be, I can't see them going and going and going until they reach a future of "2,000 years from now"... If they do plan on getting that far, they're going to have to make a drastic change from the Caesar character to something else which is highly unlikely since franchises usually stay with established characters or some variation of them... I mean with the original films, they carried Cornelius and Zira over from sequel to sequel, and while not directly them, they established a son in film three who carried on to the final two... Do you see the possibilty of anything like that happening with the new films with the direction they're going so far? I don't: I just see that they're going to continually use Caesar as their protagonist which is fine, but they'll only be able to use him for so long, then maybe a son and grandson or something along those lines... But if they're really expecting people to believe that their new films are going to lead to PLANET '68 they're going to have to shift gears really quick and there will be HUGE gaps in continuity... People think the original films lacked true continuity: These new films will be as bad, if not worse at the rate it seems they'll be going unless the new rebooted franchise goes on for about fifty films or more with multigenerational jumps in each trilogy (or however they'd decide to break them up)... I think that as far as "leading to PLANET '68" the closest they'll get to that might be mute humans and clothed, articulate, civilized apes... As far as The Forbidden Zone, The Lawgiver, the ape's city as seen in PLANET and even being in the same region as in the original film, I (myself) just do not realistically see it happening, and they shouldn't have to: These new films are just that, a new take on the APES name/franchise... To make this post tie in with the original topic, I'll say it again: Being that these new films are their own thing, it's ridiculous to have a figure from the original series as the token/bonus on a DVD for the new franchise... An armed, clothed, evolved Gorilla is not what's seen in DAWN...

People should just take these new films as they are and like them (or not like them) based solely on their own merit(s)...I can't see watching them and supporting them just in the hopes that they might get to something vaguely resembling the original film...

.html.htmlI think there are more people that like the TV series than you think... It may not be their favorite incarnation of the APES name, but it seems to definitely have its loyal fans/followers... There must be something to it for the TV series to have been released twice on DVD (the original release had to have sold decently for them to release it again, just in slimmer packaging)... I think it's very good myself...

"Dawn of the POTA" was #1 in it's 3rd week in China, bringing it's total there at $95 million. After it's incredible opening weekend ($47 million) it slipped fast, getting $15 million it's second weekend and $7.6 million this weekend. It's worldwide total now stands at $668.6 million.

       1. Transformers 4 - $1 billion
       2. Maleficent - $754 million
       3. X-Men: Daze - $746 m.
       4. Cap 2 - $714 m.
       5. Spidey 2 - $708 m.
       6. Dawn - $669 m.
       7. Guardians of the Galaxy - $611 m.
       8.  Dragon 2 - $609 m.

"Dawn" hits it's last stop, Japan, next weekend ("Rise" made $30 million there). I think "Dawn" will reach the 700 (million) Club of the big boys, but what do you think? Could it pass Spidey? Cap 2?
Also a tip of the banana to "Guardians of the Galaxy", which became the first movie to pass $300 million domestic this year. It also has an animal experiment turned gun-toting badass.

Add to that there' s no way the crew that might land in a future film could be the same crew that we see in PLANET: They messed that whole thing up by doing the brain-dead thing of using the names of Taylor's crew as "names" in RISE... I don't: I just see that they're going to continually use Caesar as their p rotagonist which is fine, but they'll only be able to use him for so long, then maybe a son and grandson or something along those lines... As far as The Forbidden Zone, The Lawgiver, the ape's city as seen in PLANET and even being in the same region as in the original film, I (myself) just do not realistically see it happening, and they should n't have to: These new films are just that, a new take on the APES name/franchise...

If they did, I wouldn't bother with it.  Classic APES is what it's all about.  That's why the makers of the new movies keep talking about getting "to the world of the '68 original."  They know what matters.

It might hit $700 million by next Sunday with Japan opening next weekend.

Has anyone here seen GUARDIANS?  I'm not into Marvel stuff, but I'll watch it eventually.  Haven't been to the movies in weeks now.  All in all, I'd say it was a lackluster summer.

I saw "Guardians". I liked the characters (can't help but compare Koba to the raccoon, both bitter animal experiments who take up arms). But the plot was boring. I didn't think it was as great as people make it out to be. Cap 2 was the better Marvel movie.
According to the critics it was a great summer ("Dawn", "Edge of Tomorrow", "Dragon 2", "Guardians", "X-Men", "22 Jump St.", etc., etc.) but people didn't go. I thought the movies last year were pretty mediocre ("Iron Man", "Star Trek", Supes) so maybe the stink kept people away this year from more deserving movies.

I just hope Fox makes an even better movie with the next installment.  I'm glad it's making a lot of money, but it's only important in that it guarantees another APES picture.

Now, I'm going to drive Krueger crazy (though he's already there) with another one of my gut feelings and "predictions"....

The July 2016 release date for the next APES film won't happen.  It'll be either later that year or summer 2017.  I also won't be surprised if Matt Reeves gets the boot.
