Sounds like it has the ring of truth to me, especially since I already thought of that.  Making one for the figure isn't all that difficult though, but the ones from Sideshow are so much better, and bigger, and I have two of them.  Plus, have you taken a good look at the sculpt of the gorilla head on the 8" Neca?  It's kind of POTA comic-book looking, rather than POTA film series looking.

I'm with you, I'm not crazy about the missing bandolier either...

In a post on the Mego Museum, one guy mentioned that it's been speculated that the missing bandolier is a cost saving measure... I don't know how accurate or inaccurate that is though...

I thought maybe it was just a rough version but there's no bandolier on the official picture on their website, so I guess he doesn't get one. Odd considering the detail they went into on Taylor. A bandolier shouldn't be that expensive. But I agree about the sculpt, it just looks off. I'd rather they canned this figure. It will either take money away from the better figures or not sell and be considered another loss. I think they should just stick to the 7" and put them out as long as they can.
The Sideshows rock but they are expensive for casual Ape fans or figure collectors who have other lines they buy (I don't mean cocaine). The 8" lines are a relatively decent price and the 8" size is revered because of the classic Megos. Though, I put NECA Taylor with the Megos and he made them look ridiculous. He looks better with the Sideshows, even though he's smaller. And yes, I do open them and display them.

I have all my Sideshows on display, where they're fast at work getting dusty and dustier, but I took care to preserve the packaging, something that's not an option with cardboard blister packaging, though I must say I made an heroic effort to preserve as best I could every one of the Medicoms (also on display) packaging.

The BIG reason why I never got into the "classic Megos" is because they do look ridiculous.  I don't have one of them -- and don't care.

The Megos are more history, for those who were kids and had them or wanted them. They were the only official POTA "action figures" for the first 30 years. So people get them for historic value.
When I got mine they were still the only game in town. A couple of mine were on John Chambers' birthday cake and some were displayed during Eric Greene's book signings so I'm fond of them. But if I had to start over (a fire or something) I'd probably skip the Megos.

So now we're up to #3 in this Star Trek/POTA comic thing?  What happened to #'s 1 & 2?  Did anyone here get them and read them?  I have no plans on getting any of this, but I'd like to hear what the story is like.  So far, it seems it's not making much of an impact, unless the sound of crickets is an impact.

.html.htmlI don't know: If you read their write-ups, this crossover was the most desired thing in all of Sci-Fi and/or comics, equalled only perhaps by the Second Coming...

I have 1 and 2 and will be picking up 3 tomorrow. However I have purposely held back on reading them as I like to read a few at a time.

But from what I'm hearing in other media (POTA groups on Facebook, comic review sites, comic podcasts, etc) the reviews have been surprisingly good. One complaint about the first issue is that it was more Trek, less Apes, but even the fact that people were clamoring for apes was a good thing to hear.

Here's NECA's own look at their upcoming Aldo figure.

So where will you be able to get him? Sounds like this week they will announce their plan to get these figures directly to the fans and, if it works, could save money and the line. NECA sez: "Retail support is minimal. Probably selling at cons, online and maybe a limited Toys-R-Us promotion. All to be determined". Sales of Series 3 will determine Series 4 (*cough* Julius *cough*).

"Dawn of the POTA" got 8 nominations (now we're talking!): Best Science Fiction Film, Best Supporting Actor (Andy), Best Young Actor (Kodi), Best Director, Best Production Design, Best Music, Best Makeup (POTA is home), and Best FX. It's the Oscars of the Odd. Good Luck!

Now this I care about.  DAWN will most likely do very well, though I'll bet it doesn't win Best Music.  I thought the score pretty bland.  I've listen to it several times on CD, mostly in my car to and from work, and it just doesn't do it for me.  A big disappointment.

Curiosity got the better of me so I've read issues 1&2.

It's honestly nowhere near as bad as you imagine but it highlights the one major flaw that troubles every cross-over there's ever been. The authors - despite what they may claim - are always a fan of one franchise more than the other and in this case it's Trek.

It's unbalanced, it's a Trek story guest starring POTA. (at least that's true of issues 1&2) Kirk and Co all behave as I expect them to (I'm no authority on Trek) Taylor seems 'off' to me.

The art is superb, great likenesses all round and the costumes are pretty accurate.

I thought this was the worst idea EVER but, on it's own terms it's quite entertaining. It is what it is and what it is has been done very well.

The only thing I think links POTA and Star Trek, other than that they were both born in the early sixties, is the occasional time travel elements and the possibility of paradoxes.  I think the best thing they could do is some kind of crazy time warp, causality loop mess sort of thing, but just don't get too comical with it like the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy.

From what I understand, it IS a "Star Trek" comic book. It's put out by the company that does the "Trek" comics. So "Apes" really is the guest star. If it was a BOOM! comic it would probably be the other way around. Maybe down the road they can do a sequel that BOOM! can publish where it's from the Ape view. Nah, people don't do sequels anymore.

True but cross pollination between comic companies (not the franchise licenses) is fairly common these days so I assumed it was Boom (who holds POTA license) and IDW (who holds ST license) just getting together to make the deal. You would have thought that one of the contract items was (near) equal exposure, but then again I can guess that all the contract dealt with was how they were going to split the money. Who gives a crap about the fans, right?

I've got the first three. I thought this was only going to be an adaptation of the movie, but when I started reading the first one I realized that it's actually a prequel to the movie, so I decided I did not want to read it in monthly chunks and stopped reading it.

What I did read from the first issue was 'OK', and nothing special. But first issues are often just 'setups' for the rest of the story and because of this first issues are usually not that great. I can say that the art was mediocre at best.

Marshall, NECA actually makes stands specifically for its action figures.  Just put "NECA stands" into the search box on eBay and you'll see a bunch of vendors offering them.  I use them with the POTA series 1 and series 2 figures and they work just fine.  Each is an acrylic disc with a peg sticking up from it that goes into the hole on the bottom of a figure's foot.

        All best wishes.

I think the 7" looks better, maybe because it's smaller. I don't like the clothes on the 8" or the "puffy" way the head looks. I think there's something off on their gorilla soldier, especially compared to their great Ursus (maybe because the helmet conceals the hair?) and in fact I skipped out on the 7", as well as Cornelius, because I didn't like the way they looked. I will probably get them today to do my part for Ape Day.

One question to you (and no sarcasm is intended): What do you like about the 7" Soldier compared to the 8" version? I can see if you just like the different scale of the smaller one, etc. but if it's the way the ape itself looks, I don't get it-They look virtually the same?

In addition to showing the figure loose and posed, it also gives some deatils on the figure...

How can you say that?  I just don't get where you're coming from or even how your mind works.  This is getting completely out of hand.

Now, I'm just kidding, but this is sort of getting ridiculous.  It's just a question of  personal aesthetics.  I'm with the Veetus on this one; I just don't like the 8" Neca gorilla.  I notice from the photos that there's a shine to his purple sleeves and pants.  Those clothes shouldn't shine, and really neither should his black vest and gloves, and in fact they shouldn't be true black at all, something that Sideshow and Medicom didn't understand either. In the movies, the gorilla's "black" vests, gloves with gauntlets and their boots are supposed to have a blueish hue.

          Planet_Apes_1968_141.jpg

Another thing about the Necas is that the figures are too skinny, a thing very annoying about the first Dr. Zaius figure (and I say the same thing about the Sideshow 18" Zaius statue.  With the gorillas, the Neca 7" figures' vests are too short and their legs are too long.  As far as I'm concerned, no one has yet nailed an accurate look to anything done on POTA in this are.

And if that's not enough, March 8 is also the day they filmed the famed Edward G. Robinson makeup test, their first crack at Dr. Zauis, in 1966. So spare a thought for the Bloody Baboon today.

How about a nice bowl of Capt. Crunch? The website Deadline.com has been crunching the numbers to see what movies were the most profitable in 2014, and "Dawn of the POTA" landed at #8. How do they know? They just do, that's all. Here's what they've listed for "Dawn":

BOX OFFICE and "RENTAL" (the money that gets back to Fox)

            Domestic B. O. : $208 million   Dom. Rental: $106 m.

China B. O.: $107 m.  China Rental: $26 m. (China only gives back about 25% of the take, because they can)
             Worldwide Box Office: $708.84 m.

            Dom. video: $83 m.   For. video: $98 m.

             Net Profit (Fox): $182 m.

Here's how the others stacked up in terms of profit so far ("Dawn" was more profitable than some of the ones who bested it at the box office):
             9. Captain America 2 - $166 m. profit
            10. 22 Jump St. - $144 m.

Only slight problem with that idea is they don't sell retail to the public.

I bought a set of these through eBay, and I must say I like them quite a bit. You can set the little figures anywhere and not worry about them tipping over.

I don't see an absolute need for stands either as the NECA's are designed stand up with only minimal adjustments for proper balance. (The same cannot be said for many other manufacturers and figures). But I can also understand people who like to have a slightly nicer esthetic presentation and the greater stability to offset potential nudges of furniture and display cabinets. Maybe even living in zones more prone to tremors and minor Earthquakes. ;)

Since the stands are really just flat surface areas with a little 'nub' that goes into the bottom of the feet, anyone can really make their own quite easily. For another non-pota figure set I converted a set glass coasters which I quickly spray painted, drilled out, and glued appropriately sized plastic model sprue leftovers to do the job. Pick up coasters cheaply (or even free) at garage sales.

Whether or not you need a stand is clearly dependent on what you do with your figures. Mine are out of the box and on my study desk. They are reasonably sure footed apes but they do fall from time to time. Given they are all in close proximity to each other (e.g. Cornelius and Zira are having their 3 kisses) if one goes down I get a domino effect happening.

Thanks to the advice I got from this list (sorry I forgot who) I picked up the clear stands off eBay for about Aust$12.00. They are great. They have only one foot peg which is clever as it increases the positioning opportunities on the stand.

Thanks for all the responses! My NECA figures do fall down sometimes just from walking by the shelf! Old house....
I've usually used stands for all figures. Sideshows' are very helpful. Medicoms stood up okay but dominoed if one fell....

Like those old cartoons where all the toys/books/magazine covers come to life and all come together to beat the evil one but all settle back in place in the morning light. I like to think my Apes are runnin around all night... Must be weird for too many Cornelius' meeting each other.

Also, NECA has said there's no further plans for "Dawn of the POTA" figures. Makes sense, what more could they do with it that's realistic financially? The first series scratched the itch. We'll see what Apes 3 offers (probably more nekid apes).

Does anyone know the name of the POTA fan fiction story about the ship they put in storage for the future astronauts to get back home in? I remember reading it about 8 years ago and would like to read it again. I've checked the POTA fan fiction sights and just can't find it.

Perhaps it's looking a lot more like the 1960s @ Lake Powell due to the drought?

I recall seeing that where Landon planted the U.S. flag has since been submerged in water. That leads me to think that although news of the more recent drought is sad, it also provides nostalgic viewing opportunities. This photo kinda reminded me of the Cookie Jar formation over which the Icarus flew before crash landing into the lake.

Similarly refreshing is the prospect of getting to see more footage of Taylor and crew. Digitally recreating missing, deceased or fragile actors is becoming increasingly possible thanks to modern technologies. Although this article doesn't mention POTA characters, one can't help but wonder... :-)

I sincerely doubt it.  Still, I'd love for you to explain the "joke."

It's NATIONAL Planet of the Apes Day and he's the prez, see? Would he make a speech about it? Of course not (maybe Star Trek). But it's funny to imagine him making one. Such is the stuff that Saturday Night Live dreams are made of.

Thanks for the clarification.  It seemed to me that the original comment lacked sufficient context to be sure of the intent, allowing for various interpretations.

The problem is that the racists in our society have used Planet of the Apes as a slur against blacks and have called Obama a chimpanzee, so any mention of POTA and Obama in the same sentence just raises certain eyebrows.

Wouldn't it help if Planet of the Apes day:

                        https://www.facebook.com/events/1621367448094156/

took place on the day of an event that is revered or noticed among us fans?   Any suggestions?   Star Wars has May the 4th (be with you) each year, in part to commemorate the initial installment's magnificent release here in the USA.   I'm not aware of any independent significance of April 3rd as a fan day.   Meanwhile this mega-fan hardly noticed the passing of this year's POTA day.   :-(

How about the departure date of Colonel Taylor and crew (which I believe was in late February)?   Since it would seem that the celebrations are mostly online, the indoor weather of February would seem likely to boost interest.   And if folks seek to dress up in commemoration, isn't winter a better time than spring?

Food for thought from Houston...  :-)
