PLANET OF THE APES Original May 5,1967 Movie Shooting Script with revised pages
I bought Norm Alden's script for THE TRAP with his own handwritten notes inside for only $150. At least that was personalized.
Is this a case of opportunists at large, or are people out there actually willing to pay? Maybe it should go on at one of those LA based memorabilia auctions?

Definitely the former. Maybe if the script has been signed by the entire
cast (main & supporting characters) and crew (director, producer,
cinematographer, screenwriters, music composer), then you'd have something that
would command a high price and potentially be brought to auction. And that's
because 90% of them are no longer with us, unfortunately.

I must agree with Mr. Lawford and others here who think it's a grand mistake of combining APES with Star Trek, Tarzan, etc. My goodness, what's next? "Back To The Future on the Planet Of The Apes"? Where Dr. Emmett L. Brown and Marty McFly try to rescue Taylor's crew?
APES should stay in their universe while Star Trek stays in its own.

I mean, I certainly understand the appeal of something like that
considering how big those two lines were to us Mego
collectors/children of the 70's. We understood the similarities,
and we even had a bit of corporate branding going on in our heads with
the term Mego. When I was a kid, my imagination would have the
Micronauts often meet up with the Super Joe toys because there was a
Science Fiction angle with both lines. I don't know that I'd actually want to
read that in a comic book however.
There was a copy of the POTA/Star Trek TPB in the comic book store I was at
yesterday, so I took a look through it and... meh. It bothered me that
they referenced the mutants but didn't actually show them-
especially when Milo apparently had a thorough knowledge of their civilization.
I'll will give them credit for acknowledging what the doomsday bomb actually
did- burned the planet by igniting the oxygen in the atmosphere (kind of
like a worldwide backdraft) as opposed to blowing it up. That's the
main problem I had with the destruction of the moon in
the 'Cataclysm' series. Since there's no atmosphere, nothing would
happen when the bomb arrived/detonated. It was never supposed to explode, but
rather trigger a chain reaction. It seems like so much has been made of what was
essentially a throwaway line in the first film ("That strange luminosity... yet
there's no moon"). Was it really necessary to build a comic book series around
that? Especially if you're going to ignore other facts established in the films
like what the Doomsday bomb actually did? Working Space: 1999 into the story
would have made as much sense.
And, new crossover miniseries announcement in 3... 2... 1...

.htmlThat is always how I assumed the Doomsday Bomb would work, just ignite the atmosphere, not actually blow the planet apart. "Burn the planet to a cinder" as Taylor said in BENEATH. As for the moon, my throwaway line from PLANET would be Taylor's "a storm of meteors" to explain it, a natural disaster after a nuclear holocaust, which alone would not change the topography so drastically, but an asteroid strike of the moon that creates a belt of debris around the earth that would also create that "strange luminosity at night." In actuality it would devastate the surface of the world and kill all life, but this is science fiction. -----Original Message----- From: lawford42@... .html I was rereading the second installment of HI and given Farrell's article about time travel, and it struck me: Virgil was basically a genius and was highly informed about technology and had a similar explanation of the multi-lane time hypothesis. Assuming this is the same TL as Ape City Chronicles, does he have a Connection (before or after Conquest) to HI?
I know that HI didn't employ servant apes, but that doesn't mean that a scientist didn't own a genius ape. Or that Virgil didn't run into the Institute after a nuclear holocaust (underground railway tunnels anyone)? Or...if you want really outlandish...that he came from an alternate TL where HI had servant apes and the downfall of man were many centuries in the future if at all? He seemed awfully informed about the pre-apes world in Battle....
Lots of possibilities....and I'm looking forward to seeing if I'm on the right track :) .

James, I have a couple of questions for you here.
Will this be the final Hasslein Institute update? This is at the beginning of the Great War, I took it...in any case, I've enjoyed the entries on this fine APES-related material.
Also: Is there any way I could get a copy of the entire Mendez Dynasty archives? It wouldn't allow me to print them...oddly, I was able to print most of the Cornelius' Journal stories.
Anyway, please write back when you can...and thanks.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the 'Hasslein Institute'. To answer your questions:
Will this be the final Hasslein Institute update?
No this is not the final installment. At this point it is about 70-75% through, so there is still more to come.
Is there any way I could get a copy of the entire Mendez Dynasty archives?
Just uploaded a PDF to the files section that includes 'Cornelius' Journal', 'Ape City Chronicles' and 'The Mendez Chronicles'. Here is the link:

.html.html About a decade ago Andy Serkis played the title role in Peter Jackson's redo of "King Kong". Since then he's done pretty well going ape for POTA. Now there's a new Kong on the block (for next March's "Kong: Skull Island") but Andy won't be reprising the role. Instead Kong will be a combination of ape movement expert Terry Notary (POTA's Rocket) and Toby Kebbell (Koba). Of course he will be CG. Kebbel will also play an Air Force major in the film (the movie is set during the Vietnam War). With this, "Tarzan", POTA, the various "Jungle Book"s and possible sequels, the cinema is getting an ape workout these days. And it can only help improve the apes for the betterment of POTA (and mankind). imdb.com/title/tt3731562

Which was confirmed by Milo in ESCAPE ("Crack like an egg, and burn to a
cinder"), plus Brent specifically mentions in BENEATH that the bomb
would set off a chain reaction in the atmosphere should it be
launched.
Coincidentally to my Space: 1999 comment below, I think in the first
episode there was passing mention of the devastation caused on Earth by the moon
leaving orbit. On Alpha, they were watching a news broadcast and there was
mention of either tidal waves or earthquakes. As far as PLANET goes, there was
also a mentioned of a "cloud covered night"- which I presumed was
included to nix the inevitable question about why didn't the astronauts
recognize the constellations. So if the night is cloud covered, it's not
unreasonable to presume that you couldn't see the moon from the surface. Plus
they were only in the desert for a few days, so that doesn't really translate
into the moon being gone. I'm fairly certain there's at least a few days each
calendar month where we can't see if from Earth with the naked eye, so we can
safely presume on those days that it wasn't blown up. And most especially
by a bomb that wasn't designed to explode in the first place...
Chris L.
haristas wrote:
>>That is always how I assumed the Doomsday Bomb would work, just
ignite the atmosphere, not actually blow the planet apart. "Burn the planet to a
cinder" as Taylor said in BENEATH. As for the moon, my throwaway line from
PLANET would be Taylor's "a storm of meteors" to explain it, a natural disaster
after a nuclear holocaust, which alone would not change the topography so
drastically, but an asteroid strike of the moon that creates a belt of debris
around the earth that would also create that "strange luminosity at night." In
actuality it would devastate the surface of the world and kill all life, but
this is science fiction. <<
I wrote:
>>I mean, I certainly understand the appeal of something like that
considering how big those two lines were to us Mego
collectors/children of the 70's. We understood the similarities,
and we even had a bit of corporate branding going on in our heads with
the term Mego. When I was a kid, my imagination would have the
Micronauts often meet up with the Super Joe toys because there was a
Science Fiction angle with both lines. I don't know that I'd actually want to
read that in a comic book however.
There was a copy of the POTA/Star Trek
TPB in the comic book store I was at yesterday, so I took a look through it
and... meh. It bothered me that they referenced the mutants but
didn't actually show them- especially when Milo apparently had a thorough
knowledge of their civilization. I'll will give them credit for acknowledging
what the doomsday bomb actually did- burned the planet by igniting the oxygen in
the atmosphere (kind of like a worldwide backdraft) as opposed to blowing
it up. That's the main problem I had with the destruction of the
moon in the 'Cataclysm' series. Since there's no
atmosphere, nothing would happen when the bomb arrived/detonated. It was
never supposed to explode, but rather trigger a chain reaction. It seems like so
much has been made of what was essentially a throwaway line in the first film
("That strange luminosity... yet there's no moon"). Was it really necessary to
build a comic book series around that? Especially if you're going to ignore
other facts established in the films like what the Doomsday bomb actually did?
Working Space: 1999 into the story would have made as much sense.
And, new crossover miniseries
announcement in 3... 2... 1... <<

Most of the apes films have been running on Cinemax as of late, and unfortunately they're showing the edited version of BATTLE. On the plus side, they are showing the theatrical version of CONQUEST...
Boy, do I agree. I've been seeing the Burton debacle popping up on the satellite far too often in the last few months. I wish Fox would bury that movie so deep that not even Cornelius in the future could dig it up.
And a reminder... less than two months now to PLANET being back in cinemas, even if only for a couple of days. I hope everyone here has checked out what theater near you will be showing it and have made your plans.

Why not show "Rise"? Because they don't care. Maybe "Dawn" (and POTA2001") are more like POTA movies than "Rise". Make mine blu-ray. Don't want to bother with TV schedules and lineups. Starting a 12 noon EST on Cinemax (East). The original five films, followed by Marky-Mark on the POTA ("C'mon!!"), followed by Dawn. Yeah, I won't be watching the marathon either, because for one thing the stuff on Cinemax will be 16X9 cropped, not fully letterboxed, and because I already watch the sequels every June/early July, one on every weekend, usually a Saturday morning with my cup of coffee and breakfast, so there you go. But it's nice Cinemax is having their marathon. I expect the films will probably be popping up again on the channel throughout the month of June, separately or in pairs or threes, all through June and maybe the summer, as they should -- they're summer, out of school movies, right?
As for why the abysmal Burton-directed turd is making a reappearance, you're wrong, Jeffery. It's not because there's an interest from the viewers. I would contend that interest is nil. What there is is an interest from Fox to keep making money off the turkey, and an interest from Cinemax to fill its schedule, so Fox obviously has made Cinemax purchase the APES films as a package that has to include the stinker in the banana bunch. Remember the turkey was all over AMC a while ago. Fox is working on revitalizing interest -- because another new APES movie is coming next year. Why not RISE, too? That I can't guess.
Rory, the intellectual APES authority (and Jeffery's arch-nemesis), signing off. (I'm just trying to be funny, Jeffery)

Ah, great minds think alike. Quite right, James. The cable/satellite channels buy their movies in packages, bundles from the studios. It makes them cheaper on a per movie basis, and allows the studios to squeeze further revenue out of titles with less interest -- hear that, Jeff?
Out of our country of 320 million people, I would estimate there's only a few dozen that have any interest in "the turd." Maybe less.

No, I don't believe that, as much as I wish it were so, because obviously we live in a pretty dumb culture -- you know, one where a whole bunch of bloody baboons think a certain TV personality should lead us all because he "Tells it like it is."
No, I just think there's little if any interest in "the monkey turd of the APES franchise" because that's mostly what I glean from the idiot culture. And, you may think Marky-Mark and Tim Burton are still of great interest, but I don't feel that in the cultural ether. They've been fading for a while. As an actor Marky-Mark is a joke, and as a director Burton is a very mixed bag.

Well, we know that there will always be one too many APES movies as long as that 2001 turkey exists. I wish I could bury it where not even Cornelius could dig it up -- and I'll bet Marky-Mark and Tim Burton would lend me a shovel!

There seems to be a lot of conflicting reports on what actually happened.
Initially the articles seemed to be glossing over the fact that the
parent(s) were clearly not watching the child, but now there's apparently talk
of criminal charges. She made a Facebook post thanking God for "protecting
her child until the authorities were able to get to him" and also "Thank you to everyone that helped me and my son today and most
importantly God for being the awesome God that he is." (yet nothing
about God letting it happen in the first place, strangely). And earlier
today, I watched a movie about mutated humans worshipping a Cobalt
bomb as their God. Can't help but think that one concept really makes about
as much sense as the other.

A lot more responses on this than I would have expected, but that's OK. The only thing I'm going to add to the discussion is that marathon programming is (obviously) done for the specific purpose of keeping televisions tuned to a specific channel, so if Cinemax was trying to "Go Ape!" on Memorial Day I really can't imagine it'd have been that big a deal to start PLANET at 10AM instead of 12PM. I mean, I would have still tuned out after BATTLE ended, but that's just me. Actually, at the end of each movie there was a brief bumper reminding viewers about the marathon and it showed a clip from Dawn where CGI Caesar says "GoOOOooo!!!. I actually listened to him at around 8:08PM and switched over to BUZZR (look it up if you're a 70's game show fan). As a brief aside, I switched between the regular and spanish language broadcasts of BENEATH just to see how the dubbing was handled. The answer is overly dramatic. Of
particular note was the person dubbing Albina's lines deciding that they should all be shouted, the mutants all saying "Senor Brent", and Taylor calling Zaius an "ultimo bastardo" at the end. The voice over was also terrible simply because the guy didn't have a baritone voice. Also for some strange reasons, the sound effects were all messed up & missing like they were before the corrections were made for the Blu-ray release (and subsequent broadcasts). I can't recommend it, but as for the APES marathon... I actually gave the POTA 2001 debacle thing some time and holy crap how lousy Rick Baker's makeups look after just fifteen years.. Thank the Lawgiver for CGI, as flawed as it is. But of course the original makeup design from PLANET remain the iconic classic.
By the way, watched the original and one and only Saturday night because I have a new Blu-ray player, and I found the Blu-ray looked better than on my old 2008 machine, so I was in "God, I love PLANET!" mode Saturday night. I will be watching each of the sequels on Saturday mornings throughout June, staring with BENEATH on the 4th. Since the sequels now play for me more like kiddie movies than ever before -- I'm getting old guys -- I've found Saturday mornings the best time to watch them, though I like I'll save CONQUEST for Saturday night on the 18th, because that movie about half takes place at night. In fact, maybe I'll watch the first part in the morning, then stop it when Governor Breck calls MacDonald for Caesar and watch the rest that night. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I'll do.

She made a Facebook post thanking God for "protecting her child until the authorities were able to get to him" and also "Thank you to everyone that helped me and my son today and most importantly God for being the awesome God that he is." (yet nothing about God letting it happen in the first place, strangely). And earlier today, I watched a movie about mutated humans worshipping a Cobalt bomb as their God. Can't help but think that one concept really makes about as much sense as the other. >>OK, so the story of the gorilla shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo has been in the news for a day and I'm the first one making mention of it here late on Sunday night?!!!
What? You guys only care about fictional talking apes or something? Shame on you! <<

.htmlNo, not unless it comes out that they knew the kid was getting through the fence and didn't do anything about it except maybe laugh. But if they didn't see what was happening, then it's the zoo's fault because they didn't have a better fence.
What I hope this ultimately encourages is discussions of why we still have zoos. I've only visited zoos a few times in my life, but as much as I love apes, I'm perfectly fine just seeing them on my TV or in movies. I don't need an animal caged for life so that I can look at it from a distance maybe once, if that.
The so-called smart animals need to like more about what they really are.

.html.html Reportedly, the kid climbed over a 3 foot barrier. Doesn't seem like it would take that long. I think the parents have been through enough. It's a sad situation but I think it's great that people have been passionate about it. Harambe has touched the world. Ape patron saint Jane Goodall has said she believes Harambe was protecting the child (let's not forget all the people yelling, which I'm sure scared the crap out of him). But even the ape experts don't want to armchair quarterback this. It came down to seconds, which anyone who's seen the video I'm sure can agree with. RIP Harambe.

.htmlI actually think there a pretty powerful little movie to be made of this tragedy, covering Harambe from his birth to his death. A real sure-fire "Born Free" like tearjerker. I hope somebody is grabbing the rights up fast!
On a more positive note, I just read that they saved his sperm, so maybe will end up with a two for one deal or better in the end. You know, if we want to save the gorillas, and all the apes, it's really just a matter of breeding! Just make more of them. Hey, who knows where it could end?
DID I JUST SAY THAT?!
