.htmlInitially, probably A (radiation), but then as the ape culture grew, I'd say C, more or less - there's too much evidence of human "superiority" in the cities. Have to keep the lie intact.
The first two movies were top notch. I hope there's some good writing in this next one (twists, reveals, etc) because it seems like they could have sewed up the Forbidden Zones and human downfall with the nukes etc in the last movie. I'm kinda itching to see apes with guns on horseback in uniform. But as long as we see some major progression in their society, that will be good - can't just go from sniffing green fog to Ape City, but don't want to drag it along too much, either.

Since I missed the Fathom showings both days this week, I **was**
going to go to the screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers until I saw that
I'd have to cross either the GW or Triboro Bridge while driving.
Nooope!!

.htmlSince we've got resources like this: https://pota.ediaarchive.com/Locations/POTAlocations.htm, Google Earth, etc, has anyone ever actually located the cave entrance from BENEATH and/or the area the gorilla soldiers were looking around for Brent and Nova? I've seen enough set photos to be convinced that what they used as the cave entrance was a natural formation (even if it wasn't an actual cave entrance), but no one seems to have actually come across where it's located. I saw a video on You Tube once showing the tree/branch that knocked the gorilla solider off the top of the wagon (the branch had been cut off by that point), but that's about it. Yet oddly, we had to wait another five full years for RETURN to be released
by itself. And that series- arguably- has far more of a backstory & ongoing
narrative than the live action TV series did.

.htmlI think I know where the cave entrance location is in Malibu State Park, but I'd have to actually visit it to confirm it. Maybe someday. Otherwise, I don't know of anyone that's ever said they know where it is, which is odd.
As for the tree branch that knocks the gorilla off the wagon in Beneath.... first off, it's a fake branch. And second, that shot with the wagon was NOT shot on location at the Fox Ranch, but rather at Vasquez Rocks. Just look at the rocks in the background when the gorilla is on top of the wagon -- not the Fox Ranch.

Chris, why won't you drive over the bridges to Yonkers to see PLANET? Sounds like a silly excuse to me.

Subject: [pota] BENEATH cave location
Since we've got resources like this: https://pota.ediaarchive.com/Locations/POTAlocations.htm, Google Earth, etc, has anyone ever actually located the cave entrance from BENEATH and/or the area the gorilla soldiers were looking around for Brent and Nova? I've seen enough set photos to be convinced that what they used as the cave entrance was a natural formation (even if it wasn't an actual cave entrance), but no one seems to have actually come across where it's located. I saw a video on You Tube once showing the tree/branch that knocked the gorilla solider off the top of the wagon (the branch had been cut off by that point), but that's about it. .html Could entrepreneurs "make it" by offering tours of regional POTA filming locations on a prepaid, available upon request basis? Uber could be of use so that the tour guide(s) could focus on informing instead of driving. That's especially the case in NYC, where nobody wants a vehicle. Washington D.C.'s like that too (i.e. largely car-less), but it's not clear that there's anything POTA-related to tour in our present nation's capital other than the Thade (er Lincoln) Memorial. Maybe Washington D.C. could double as a Logan's Run tour site. ;-)
Heck, maybe a network of tour guides based in various locations could viably emerge to inform and inspire regarding numerous hit SciFi movies. Much of Total Recall (1990) was filmed in Mexico City. Some of Star Wars was filmed in (I think) Tunisia, at a now-abandoned locale.
Or perhaps this could all be done through a GPS-linked system that's largely automated and available for download 24/7. One could select genres and areas and see what comes up. Hopefully the guide regarding the planting of Landon's U.S. flag at Lake Powell won't lead folks precisely to where it happened, though. To my knowledge it's now submerged.
What other movies might you think should have representation on such a potential network of tour sites?
Have a refreshing weekend & greetings from Houston... <.html

I'm curious as to why you don't think the Forbidden Zone might have (also) emerged from some sort of a treaty or truce, sort of like what Caesar referred to near the start of Dawn of the POTA when visiting humans with his army and saying which region is for which species.

My understanding of the original concept of a "Forbidden Zone" in PLANET was that it was a region that was poisonous and barren of life -- because of the radioactivity from a nuclear war that was once there in the remote past.
I don't know where the makers of the reboots are going, but they have said that these films are prequels to "the world of the '68 original," and so are at some point going to have to have a nuclear conflagration occur, or something worse (A storm of meteors, perhaps, or the moon being destroyed or knocked out of orbit by some cosmic cataclysm?). Maybe this is how WAR will end, with both human and simians surviving in some kind of shelter and re-emerging in the aftermath to start what will become that "world of the '68 original"?
We'll see. But I can see the possibility of at least another trilogy. There's enough time in the pre-history of the simian civilization (pre-Lawgiver and the writing of the Sacred Scrolls) to explore how humanity degenerated into animals (and became "pets" to the apes) and how the ape society we saw in the original film came into being. I can imagine civil conflicts and even outright wars between the three different species of apes that could make for at least one movie.
With enough imagination, anything is possible.

.html.html There's been nothing said that "War" is the end of a "Caesar" trilogy but it makes sense to me. Wrap up the naked apes, maybe kill off Caesar with a note of time always marching on, the final nail in the coffin of Man and Ape. BANG! A second trilogy set 200 years later or so when there is enough difference worth picking up on. Apes with clothes and a society. Humans can still speak but are persecuted. Use it for whatever the filmmakers feel they have to say. I've thought that it would be cool if Matt Reeves does one more and sets up this second trilogy (as Rupert Wyatt did the first) and then Wyatt comes back and does the second and third film. Both getting their own Ape trilogy intermingled.
Third trilogy set in "the world of the '68 film". Whether it's a literal return to that environment or only a remake of it (humans can't speak, maybe the astronauts from "Rise" return) it would be fun for them to get all '68 on our asses with the new film techniques. One of the producers said they could see doing 8 Ape movies so why not 9? It all depends what the market will bear. Fox hasn't had a great summer, with "X-Men" and "Independence Day" doing "meh" so soon Apes will be up to bat again. Will audience lethargy continue next summer? Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Asheville, NC. Believe it's not a good theater, one of the old-style multiplexes that were a series of "shoebox" dimension auditoriums all in a row. It was like I was going to the movies again in 1980 or earlier. Unfortunately, it was the only theater close to me that was showing PLANET and it was still a 40 minute drive to get there.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigantopithecus
Yeah, but Gigantopithecus was a large orangutan-type ape, not a gorilla. King Zaius!
If you saw the live action Disney JUNGLE BOOK earlier this year, you saw what was supposed to be a Gigantopithecus, though they made him more gigantic than he really was (only about 10 feet tall, with females only half that size). But modern humans did live at the same time as when they were still Gigantopithecus roaming around, so some humans probably saw them.

Well, I'm thinking more of POTA and Beneath, as far as a possibility of an ape/human truce. Zaius didn't seem to know about humans in the city/forbidden zone, and he seemed to know all the secrets When he was questioning Taylor, he seemed to think the tribe was from beyond the forbidden zone, not in it. Why would there be a truce where the apes get the non-radiated land, and the humans get the radioactive city? Based on that, I just figured there wasn't a truce.

John Chambers (on screen) faced a King Kong situation in 1971's "Schlock!"
John Chambers once helped make a King Kong. There was an article about it in "Famous Monster of Filmland" back in the sixties.
You haven't forgotten that, have you?

"Skull Island" director Jordan Vogt-Roberts only mentions American Kongs; he estimates the 1933, 1976 and 2005 apes are between 25 – 50 feet and his is 100 feet. I've also heard the 2014 Godzilla is the biggest Godzilla ever. How big they are in "King Kong vs. Godzilla" (1962) I dunno.

John Chambers (on screen) faced a King Kong situation in 1971's "Schlock!"; Rick "POTA2001" Baker played Kong in 1976; Andy "Caesar" Serkis played Kong in 2005; Terry "Rocket" Notary plays the new Kong with a facial assist from Toby "Koba" Kebbell. The 1933 "King Kong" was the inspiration for Arthur Jacobs to do POTA.

I'm suspecting that Fathom Events isn't particularly pleased with the box office performance of their recent release. But then again, one reaps what one sews and there weren't even POTA movie posters at the North Houston cinema where I saw it. They had a prime opportunity to get spillover traffic from Star Trek Beyond and Independence Day (the sequel) which they were also showing, and yet they didn't even have a single poster up anywhere. Maybe their social media specialist told them that Facebook would suffice, and that money spent on posters should instead be spent on her salary.

Looks like it will be at all their locations (mostly in Texas). The Drafthouse is known for their limited edish stuff like posters, a magazine and more. They are famously a theater chain that doesn't just take your ticket. A quick perusal shows theaters in: Ashburn, Austin, Charlottesville, Corpus Christi, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, El Paso, Houston, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, Laredo, Los Angeles, Lubbock, New Braunfels, Omaha, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Francisco, Springfield, Winchester and Yonkers.

I say this because I have the entire "Daniel Boone" TV series on DVD and I'm still making my way through the show. I watched an episode from season six the other day, and it had someone driving a wagon along the creek and behind him was what looked to me to be that same pointed rock area, only seen from the other side.
Because of the magic of film editing though, you really can't be sure that everything in a given sequence was all shot in exactly the same place, so that cave may not be near where we see Brent, Nova and the gorillas climbing among the rocks, or it may be. Again, I'd have to actually visit the park to be sure.

I suspect that the majority of people who live there either simply stay
there or use public transportation if they need to cross one of the rivers
frequently. If it weren't for Metro North, I'd **never** get to Manhattan on
occasion.

That's a good guess, but no. Both covers feature a major character from
the film they're adapting (Dr. Zaius from BENEATH, Cornelius from BATTLE)
that don't actually appear in the adaptation.

Well, that's just going too far. I can put up with him calling Dr. Zaius "low energy," or Lucius "Little Louie," but come on! Do we really want this gorilla to have the ability to launch the Alpha/Omega bomb?

.html Well said Haristas, but let's please not forget that Ursus' opponent, Adipose, took classified property home with her which ultimately gave Rise to a Dawn of War. Adipose's followers prefer that others perceive that when one's around Adipose, one can see no evil, hear no evil and smell no evil. But although Apes are created equal, Adipose and crew believe themselves more equal than others. Ape shall not kill ape, but some have fallen by the wayside prematurely and unexpectedly when interfering with the ambitions of Adipose. Compounding matters, although being monogamous is "easy" on some planets, when one's married to Adipose, it's a madhouse! <.html

A little hard to figure out, though, if the outdoor cage in BENEATH is in the same spot it was in PLANET. It could be, but I think it could possibly be in a different location at the ranch.

I also think that if BATTLE (the film) had been more like the book and record adaptation, it might have actually been better... Why you ask: Because in the book and record adaptation, Aldo actually seems like someone who could be a threat to Caesar and the ape's city, rather than that practically bumbling buffoon he was in the film...
And for what they are, I like the four original "TV series" stories Power Records did... To me at least, they capture the overall feel of the TV show, and a story like "Volcano" would have actually made a very good episode...

.html.html The last few years have seen the return of Charlton Heston's 3 most famous stories. Of course POTA is back big time. The makers of the new POTA did the Moses story with Fox (starring Christian Bale - - - though shouldn't it have been Jewish Bale?). And this week will see the encore of Heston's Oscar-winning role, "Ben Hur". This time it's Jack Huston (grandson of John Huston, the greatest ape of all, our Lawgiver) in the lead and featuring Toby "Koba" Kebbell as his best friend turned worst enemy Messala. Plus a cameo by none other than Jesus Christ. Will it be good? Dunno, but it's a nice break from the samey same summer movie schedule. Long live Heston's legacy.

.htmlThanks for sharing those interesting observations. :-) Incidentally, POTA (1968) was reportedly made because of Mr. Heston, and wouldn't have been without his vigorous lobbying for it.
It's not clear that Ben Hur or Moses fit into that same category. They sure did showcase Mr. Heston's amazing talents and skills, though. However, it's not clear that their franchises are that synomous with him even in his absence. But who can think of POTA's franchise without thinking of Mr. Heston?
Seeing the franchise's revival succeed like it is is beyond wonderful.
BTW, might anyone know if Mr. Heston played a significant part in having POTA 2001 launched? Perhaps he nudged Oliver Stone and later Mr. Zanuck to feel reminiscent about the Apes and to consider a re-make. I don't know how Tim Burton came along to replace Mr. Stone but I admittedly enjoyed parts of POTA 2001. We'd gone decades without the Apes, after all, although Mark Wahlberg's performance wasn't anywhere near Charlton Heston's as George Taylor.
Cheers from Houston... <.html

Heston seemed to be proud enough of APES, but I never seen him as feeling overly reminiscent about it, certainly not to the point of wanting it to be remade... It was a feather in his cap, and a classic one at that, and I think he was quite content to leave it at that...

.html I met Mr. Heston and briefly discussed POTA with him at U.Va.'s annual film festival, whose leadership I helped persuade to focus on Mr. Heston back in '91. When I let him know upon meeting him there that he was my favorite actor of all time, he became quite animated (and I have a photo to help prove it). When I then showed him the POTA book that I'd had all my life (and still do), he was astonished, albeit in a good-humored way to realize that my reverence for him was based on the POTA franchise.
Perhaps with time (during the 1980s and 1990s), it became apparent to Mr. Heston that Planet of the Apes was one of the works for which he'd be most remembered and which could revive discussions & debates that had previously motivated him to back the POTA 1968 release in the first place?
The revisitation of the POTA franchise in 2001 certainly made his POTA 1968 release more talked about. He attended the premier, and posed in photo-ops with Mark Wahberg.
I saw Ben Hur on the big screen and although it won all those Oscars, I'm not sure that it's nearly as appealing globally as POTA 1968 and the overall Apes franchise. Fine movie, nevertheless, but it hasn't made The Simpsons or Saturday Night Live, has it? Mr. Heston has though, on more than one occasion...including in 1993 when one of the skits concluded with the Statue of Liberty and an obvious bow to POTA 1968. Incidentally SNL's Tina Fey had been a student at U.Va. during its 1991 annual film festival celebration of Mr. Heston, while I was a law student there. POTA re-make talks then started to surface periodically in mass-media...
The 10 Commandments (featuring Mr. Heston) comes out every year on apparently prime time television. But which do you think has broader appeal for the masses? Ben Hur? The 10 Commandments? Or POTA?
Exodus lost its shirt earlier this decade:
but it inspired no franchises, etc. Hopefully its re-make will perform better than Exodus did, ticket sale-wise. But it will NOT perform as well as Dawn, or perhaps even Rise. Any predictions?

.html From what I understand Fox wuz lukewarm to a new Apes until "Natural Born Killers" producer Don Murphy (a big fan) wanted to do it and enlisted Oliver Stone (who wuz lukewarm to it). Fun fact: Heston wuz a big Oliver Stone fan and said in an interview he figured Stone would never work with him because of their politics; Stone read that and cast him in "Any Given Sunday", which also had a "Ben Hur" tribute. And from then on a big revolving door of names wanted to do it: Ah-nuld, Chris Columbus, James Cameron, Tim Burton. By then Fox had realized there was interest in it (but still didn't "get" Apes as the serious story people wanted).
POTA2001 totally killed their enthusiasm and it wasn't until Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver independently came up with "Rise" that Fox wuz slowly lulled back in. The only reason Heston wuz in POTA2001 wuz becuz Richard Zanuck talked him into it (a reversal from the original when Zanuck had to be persuaded over years). Sent from Mail for Windows 10
