POTA (1968) is such a great movie for younger generations to finally get to see on the big screen. I can see professors and teachers wanting to notify their classes...
Has this tradition been going on for long, already?

No, this is just a one time thing being done to promote Turner Classic Movies above all else. Though they could possibly do it next year when the new APES film comes out, I very much doubt it.
I say that unless you live in either L.A. or N.Y.C., make sure you go this if you can, because you may never have the opportunity again, and this could attract a good sized audience, I hope anyway.
If the movie looks good in the theater I'm going to on Sunday, July 24th, I may see it twice, at 1 PM and then at 7 PM. But if I'm there pretty much by myself and the movie is shown in a so-so digital projection, no.
Can everyone here start to confirm if you're going to go to this and where? I'm curious.
Rory

.html.html I haven't really thought much about it. I've seen it so many times in the theater it's hard to have enthusiasm. But I think it's great that more people have the chance. If I was a newbie I'd probably see every screening. Plus I'll be out of town. But maybe. I think it will be a flawless digital presentation, which will be like watching a blu-ray.
POTA (1968) is such a great movie for younger generations to finally get to see on the big screen. I can see professors and teachers wanting to notify their classes...
Has this tradition been going on for long, already?
Either way, I can't wait! :-)

.htmlIt's a digital projection. Fathom doesn't send prints to theaters. The films are digitally broadcast to the theaters. This is from the FAQ on the Fathom Events site:
(Q) How are Fathom Events broadcast in movie theaters? (A) Currently, Fathom Events has access to more than 17,000 screens and more than 750 live broadcast theaters in the top 50 markets in the United States. Fathom Events beams live and pre-recorded events via satellite to audiences in cinemas via our digital broadcast network.
Jaws looked great when I saw it last year, but it was probably just Blu-ray quality.

They probably could do it in IMAX, but they'd have to do a 6K scan of the original camera negs and the best possible digital restoration, and it would still look rather grainy blown up that much. Anyway, it's not going to happen.

.html.html I saw a digital screening of "Escape". The foreground looks great but the background can't really deal with the big screen, it gets soft. It'll be a glorified blu-ray (I don't think they'll strike new prints for a limited run) but it'll be a good time. Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Haristas@... [pota] Sent:

It's at a multiplex which unfortunately doesn't have stadium seating but it does have quality projection. They also serve food and even beer there! I think the new Star Trek movie opens that weekend, so I'm planning on seeing PLANET at 1 PM, then going to the new Star Trek movie, then seeing PLANET again at the 7 PM showing.
BUT, if the projection sucks, I'll most likely just watch the 1 PM showing and then leave.
Other than the projection, I worry there won't be many people there. I'm hoping there's a good size crowd. I figure there will be less people in the middle of the week, so I'm not thinking about that.

But I reckon it's a milestone. Also adding to the festivities is that 7/18/16 is the day the apes rise (according to the newspaper in "Rise"). .htmlOh, you're lucky. But maybe seeing it in an older style theater will feel more like I'm back in the sixties again, so I'm trying to keep positive.
Only 15 or 20 people for SPARTACUS and BEN-HUR? That's depressing. The biggest crowd for a revival I attended was for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Theater was almost packed. I can't remember what year that was, late '80s or early '90s. I went to the revival of SPARTACUS with a date and she'd never seen it before. Laughed at some of it, but then cried at the end. I also saw a revival of BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. That was pretty well attended.
I would think the crowds are bigger in LA and New York. Anyone remember how many people were there for PLANET when it was at the Zeigfeld in 2008? Some of you went to the first showings. (Oh, by the way -- they closed the Zeigfeld. Bummer.)
Anyway, maybe the advertising on TCM will bring more people. Oh, yeah, I remember going to see KING KONG, the original, in a theater in the '70s, and going to THE WIZARD OF OZ in the '90s. Both times, just me and a couple people. It sucks.

Playhouse Video was actually for both children's and family films and
entertainment (a lot of the early Dr. Who VHS releases came out on Playhouse as
well). Plus, even back in the early 70's Arthur Jacobs realized that the
Apes films had a huge audience among children. Which is why we have all that
cool merchandising from back then- especially all the Mego stuff. There could
have been a plan to relaunch something in the 80's that never happened, or Fox
simply could have decided that the Playhouse Video brand needed some
publicity and used it to release all five films for the first time. Remember
that prior to 1985, only PLANET and BENEATH had been released on home video. I
never had a problem with them being released on Playhouse, especially since the
home video boom was just really taking off in 1985. There was more a rush to
just get the material available for sale as opposed to creating speciality
labels for certain genres.
Chris L.
haristas (again):
"Duh! That they were sold on the Playhouse Video label, of course! That was
a label for kid's movies! You might make that argument for BATTLE, but the
others, especially the original, kid's movies? They were family entertainment,
but meant for kid's to watch in the Playhouse?!! ! I find that insulting to
those films' legacy, but unfortunately too many don't have a problem with it,
even here, I guess."

Yup.
I will always give props to anyone who takes the time to write a book about
something that's inspired them (unless they start declaring on their Facebook
page that **their** publication is far better than anyone else's, considered to
be the definitive so-and-so by fans, etc), but it was fairly evident early on
that a lot of the interpretation were going to be very... questionable. For
example (and paraphrasing): "Nova spoke, and since women aren't allowed be both
beautiful and intelligent in Western culture she had to die". Yeesh. Yet
the foreshadowing of the end of BENEATH with the bleeding
Lawgiver scene is **completely** missed. In the example you gave, it was simply
an art error. Which- I'm sure- someone will argue was a subconscious attempt to
link the two things together, but still...

I'm back from a visit to Arizona, so I'll be catching up on a bunch of
threads all at once...
For whatever reason, the Juno e-mail program often inserts blank spaces
into links so that's why it didn't work initially. Sometimes James has a chance
to fix them before they go out to everyone, sometimes bad links creep through. I
certainly wasn't trying to make it a mystery or anything like that. I just
watched the clip on Huffington Post, and in all honesty it wasn't that bad.
They're not making fun of the movie or anything like that- I think it's all done
with good intentions and humor. BTW, thank to Dario for posting a working
link.

I'll be going on Wednesday the 27th, though just for the evening show.
Undecided between the locations (either Albany or Saratoga Springs,
although Albany is about 40 minutes closer). I saw it twice at the Ziegfeld
in 2008, once later that year (along with BENEATH, SOYLENT GREEN, and THE OMEGA
MAN) at Lincoln Center for their Charlton Heston film Festival, and once again
in 2009 somewhere in Massachusetts (maybe near the Berkshires?). Can't remember
for certain, though I remember finding out about it the same day it was
happening when I read a post in the group here. So one of the four showing will
be enough for me.
Most of us who went to the Ziegfeld stayed for both showings, actually.
There were something like 40 or so people there for the early show, and about
half of that for the evening show. Lincoln Center was fairly well packed though
(the Sunday of Labor Day weekend), and a few of us even got to meet both
Charlton Heston daughter (I've forgotten here name now) and his wife
Lydia. I seem to recall that she was in somewhat frail health and left after
PLANET had concluded, although BEN-HUR was shown earlier in the day as well so
I'm sure she had her fill of sitting in a theater.

I spent a few hours last night adding almost 500 new images from
Mark Talbot-Butler to the MT-B Stills archive on my Apes
site! That brings the total to over 1,900, most of which can be
downloaded in high-resolution. This updates includes gobs and gobs
of behind-the-scenes photos, most of which I've never seen before.
Also added to my site, thanks to Ty Templeton: all six issues of

I'd rather see them use a reproduction of the original PLANET poster, or something along those lines...

POTA (1968) is such a great movie for younger generations to finally get to see on the big screen. I can see professors and teachers wanting to notify their classes...

.htmlWell, the designated AMC theater in North Houston (Texas, on 17145 Tomball Parkway) didn't even have a poster up for the film, apparently anywhere within its large cinematic complex of over a dozen theaters. I had hoped to see such promoting underway so that Star Trek Beyond, and also Independence Day spillovers could see the poster(s) and become potential fans. Not to be though, for whatever reason. I attended the 2p.m. Sunday showing and there were around a dozen of us in there watching it. I have no idea how they even found out about the movie's being shown. Perhaps from: https://www.facebook.com/ApesMovies
The digital quality was reasonably good, albeit not so much so during tthe initial space scene part. I guess that they couldn't do but so much with 1960s film.
I'm surprised the the window of the Icarus still shows those 1960s quasars, instead of something that looks more like what a space traveler really might see. George Lucas would have likely fixed this if it had been HIS movie.
Anyhow, does anyone here think that the interview scene of "Dr. Zaius" mainly before but also after the film is a sufficiently worthwhile part of the experience? I certainly don't want to knock Fathom Events for having cared enough to show our movie nationwide. However, I'm inclined to think that I could have done without those skits. What value did they add, other than give late-arriving straddlers a little more time to get seated & comfortable? Fortunately those skits were relatively brief.
All in all, I'm very grateful to have had this opportunity. Thanks to Fathom Events, and those of you who enabled me to learn about this opportunity months ago. :-)

.htmlSaw the 2pm showing today in San Angelo, Texas.
Having never seen it on the big screen I was BLOWN away, especially by the vast expanses and the vibe/feel of the FZ (which does not translate nearly as well on the small screen. Was also astonished at almost feeling vertigo when the Icarus crashes at the beginning. All in all this SIMIAN was BEYOND happy! It's showing here again Wednesday...May have to go again.

DO NOT MISS IT! It's gonna totally blow you away! It looks amazing on the big screen. I saw it at 2:00 and I'm still processing what I just saw. Nothing like the big screen. The minute the gorillas appear in the cornfield it's 100% pure eye candy from there. I'm going again Wednesday.

Well, the designated AMC theater in North Houston (Texas, on 17145 Tomball Parkway) didn't even have a poster up for the film, apparently anywhere within its large cinematic complex of over a dozen theaters.
Perhaps from:
https://www.facebook.com/ApesMovies
The digital quality was reasonably good, albeit not so much so during tthe initial space scene part. I guess that they couldn't do but so much with 196
0s film.
&nbs
p; Thanks to Fathom Events, and those of you who enabled me to learn about this opportunity months ago. :-)
Best regards from Houston! :-)

I'm trying not to if only the local multiplex would cooperate! I was told by the theater manager it would be playing on Wednesday the 27th, so I'll be seeing it then.
Meanwhile, I'm reading mixed things about the presentation, some saying it looked great, others that it had problems. I got a pretty detailed report from John O'Callaghan, who saw it yesterday at an AMC multiplex in Riverside, CA, in a large auditorium that was attended by a "disappointing" 15 people.
He told me the movie is in mono. Anyone else notice that?

It is in mono but Jerry's score does fill the room. Picture quality was great. Apes look larger than life and really detailed. Jaw dropping on the big screen. In our theater there was at least 75 people in the room and the film ended with huge applause. People walked out of there with big smiles on their faces. A very good day at the movies.
I only hope some day TCM shows all 5 original films. That would be heaven.

.htmlAll in all, I think my experience was very similar to yours (I was in Shreveport, Louisiana).
There was a poster inside the theater (the standard Fox poster with Caesar and the Statue of Liberty). There were 15-20 people in attendance, most appeared to be in my age range (mid-50's), however it looked like several people were bringing their grandchildren, which was nice to see.
The initial spacecraft scenes were a bit grainy, but after that it was fine, and the soundtrack did seem to be mono, but overall I was very pleased. My wife seemed to enjoy it, and she had never seen the entire movie before. Some of the Dr. Zaius interview was cute, but it wasn't necessary.
Seeing it for the first time on the big screen I did take notice of a couple of minor details that I had not seen before in all my years of VCR, DVD and Blu-ray viewings. There is a tear at the back of the right arm shoulder seam of Taylor's uniform during the Forbidden Zone trek, never noticed that before. And there was a very subtle bullet wound scar on Taylor's neck during the escape from Ape City and at the diggings site after he shaves his beard.
I enjoyed it enough that I think I will go back Wednesday night.

I'm grateful to them for the opportunity that they bestowed upon the nation (albeit without much if any posters at the theaters, and certainly none at the North Houston one where I saw it Sunday at 2pm. with a dozen folks in the audience)....

Not sure if that's the first thing I'll want to do when I arrive. Gonna play it by ear but at least I know it's an option now.

.html.html Saw the 7pm showing on Sunday in Charlotte, NC. About 30 people there with a small applause at the end. My wife had never seen it on the screen so she enjoyed it. A couple we know came and they were both virgins! He said it was interesting cause he had heard so many references to it before that he felt he had seen it. REALLY want to go again Wednesday night but might have to work late... Tim On Jul 25, 2016, at 2:48 PM, mmuse@... [pota] <pota@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
All in all, I think my experience was very similar to yours (I was in Shreveport, Louisiana).

Well, the designated AMC theater in North Houston (Texas, on 17145 Tomball Parkway) didn't even have a poster up for the film, apparently anywhere within its large cinematic complex of over a dozen theaters.
Best regards from Houston! :-)

.htmlCould "War for the Planet of the Apes" suffer from franchise-fatigue? Current trends suggest as much:
http://variety.com/2016/film/features/box-office-decline-summer-blockbusters-the-bfg-1201822322/
Nevertheless, Dawn outperformed its predecessor Rise:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/search/?q=planet%20of%20the%20apes
Then again, whatever's earned in China (soon to become the world's #1 movie ticket market) only leads to a 25% (not a 50%) return to the USA's studios and marketers.
Either way, notice how 20th Century Fox is listed behind #1 Disney? Market consolidation's predicted to occur. Fox might avoid that consolidation and remain nimble enough to keep making Apes movies after War. Admittedly it was disappointed with domestic revenues for Independence Day's recent sequel, but then again that movie did well enough abroad to make its money back. But only barely, since much of its revenue came from China (Mr. 75% cut for itself):

At any rate, let's hope that War for the Planet of the Apes does well a year from now.
Cheers from Houston (where George Taylor likely trained). <.html

.htmlI saw Planet of the Apes (1968) at our local theater (Regal Cinema) in Covington, Louisiana. Alas, I was the only one at the theater for the entire screening. I've never seen the movie in a theater before, although I've seen it on TV numerous times. I'm planning on seeing the movie again tonight, and I'm hoping some friends may join me.
I'm curious if anyone else had any "timing" issues with the movie. Our local theater's website advertised that the movie would start at 7 pm CST. The box office listed 7 pm, and Fathom Events listed 7 pm also. I've been to other TCM/Fathom Events screenings, and they always start on time. Usually, the screenings are preceded by trailers for other Fathom Events screenings and/or other advertisements. As I say, I've never experienced any delays for these other screenings.
When I arrived in the theater auditorium at about 6:50 pm, the screen was black. At 7 pm CST, the Fathom Events trailers started, and, at 7:30 pm, the Ben Mankiewicz/Dr Zaius conversation started. After the movie and post-movie comments concluded, I spoke to a theater manager about the apparent delay in the screening, but he didn't know anything about it. He said that the movies were streamed, but he would check and see why a delay occurred.
Did anyone else experience this kind of delay? I'm not taking any chances with the screening tonight, as I will arrive before 7 pm, but I'd rather not sit through 30 minutes of trailers. LOL
Thanks,
Steve <.html

.htmlI saw the 2PM showing on Sunday in Bowling Green, KY. Only about a dozen people in the theater, including one man and four young boys. We got to see the TCM presentation, which this same theater didn't show last year for Jaws. It was amusing. Mostly fun just to see Dana Gould do his thing.
I loved seeing it on the big screen, but there was far more detail to background scenes on my Blu-ray at home. I had the feeling that the focus was just a tad off at this theater, though not so bad that it ruined the film. Most of it looked fine, it was just background stuff that seemed more out-of-focus than the Blu-rays.
Would like to go to the last showing tonight, but probably won't. $13 again seems a bit excessive.

.htmlWell, I just got back from the 2PM Wednesday screening at the theater near Asheville, NC showing it. Unfortunately, it was one of those older multiplexes without stadium seating. And the auditorium was one of those rectangular shoe-box types, probably seating no more than three hundred, if even that. It reminded me of going to the movies in the seventies, so it wasn't entirely a bad thing.
As I figured, there was just me and three or four other people, and since I sat two rows back from the screen and right in the center, it was basically a private screening.
As for the projection itself, it wasn't bad. It was probably only 2K but it was OK. The bad thing was that the transfer was of an older interpositive, not anything restored. That means a positive print made from an internegative made from the original camera negatives. So it's a third generation element, which is why some of you are saying it looked soft. It was also an interpositive not as good as that used on either the 2004 DVD or the current Blu-ray. There were many fine, light scratches I spotted throughout it and some flicker and some color fluctuations. It was grainier that what we see on DVD or Blu-ray, but I think you don't see as much grain on video because of digital noise reduction. The overall image also had more contrast than what's on video, but I didn't think it too contrasty.
As to how satisfied I was with the experience, I'll put it this way: I was prepared to hang around and see it again at 7PM, but after it was over, I just wanted to get home and look at some of it on Blu-ray again. I actually prefer watching the movie on Blu-ray on my plasma TV.
The sound was mono, as reported by others, but did anyone else notice when the music faded out as the astronauts stepped from their raft onto the shore? It then came back on for the last few seconds of the cue. Very strange. Otherwise, I believe it was the original mono mix. The music was loud and properly upfront instead of dominated by the sound effects as it is on video now. But I must say that I preferred the stereo mix I heard when I saw the 35mm print in NYC in 2008, but image-wise, this digital presentation was superior to that 35mm print. I just wish they could have presented it with its Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 modern remix.
So, I'm glad I was able to see PLANET in a theater again, but I can't say I really enjoyed looking at the interpositive used. I'd love to see a theatrical 4K projection of a digitally restored transfer from the original camera negatives. Maybe someday.
Meanwhile, does everyone know there's another theatrical showing of PLANET around the country on August 30th? No where near me, though.
Rory

.html Questions r/e POTA (1968)'s conclusion:
*What's the leading reason why Dr. Zaius let Taylor ride on with his horse & Nova?
A) To scare Ape City into preparing for war, upon learning that Taylor had "escaped"? Surely that helped boost the budget & prestige for the military, over which Dr. Zaius had control.
B) Or was it mainly to show some respect for someone to whom Dr. Zaius hadn't exactly been the most gracious host during his "visit" to Ape City?
C) Perhaps it was mainly to let Taylor see for himself why Dr. Zaius wanted no intelligent humans around?
Admittedly it was also D) to receive a bigger bonu$ from 20th Century Fox, since the film's iconic ending was more marketable than that of Omega Man's own abrupt cinematic conclusion. But that was more Maurice Evans than Dr. Zaius. :-)
*And what of the trial for heresy that Dr. Zaius had promised Cornelius & Zira at the movie's end? Perhaps the Apes' encounters with (Taylor-irritated?) underdwellers soon thereafter prompted Dr. Zaius to rethink that promise for a pair of potential allies for the war movement? Or maybe everyone "made nice" during the long ride back to Ape City from Malibu, CA. I mean from the area of The Cave? It's been a few years since I last saw Beneath the POTA, but I did see POTA (1968) at the cinema again on Sunday (here in Houston) and the abovementioned questions have resurfaced in my mind. Any thoughts?
Cheers from the Gulf Coast... :-) <.html

Why do YOU think it's called that?
A) So that survivors of the conflict would avoid exposure to nuclear fallout?
B) To abide by a possible truce with humans, who ultimately resorted to living underground while remaining armed?
C) To avoid discovering that humans were previously brighter than modern apes had eventually come to believe that they are? Koba likely influenced his share of apes to want to keep humans down, enduringly.
D) Other?

.htmlI went to the 7 pm showing on Wednesday in Milwaukee (ish), Wisconsin. We had a group of 4 - one had never seen it, one saw it long ago. I've never seen it on the big screen. One of the cashiers was confused when one of them asked for a ticket for Planet of the Apes - apparently she didn't realize it was showing.
There were 7 or 8 people total in the theater - glad I bought my tickets in advance! I had no idea what to expect until I started reading posts here about attendance. I thought the interview with Dr. Zaius was a nice touch and entertaining, informative. The interview part about Heston and the straws that's on the TCM website was not included in the theater interview.
The fact that POTA was rated G drew some comments, and the scene where the astronauts found the human footprints (if you know what I mean) drew some snickering and comments from everyone.
The guy that had never seen it before said it was better than he thought it would be and now wants to see the squeals. It's always interesting to get those opinions.
Glad I was able to see it.
