I haven't seen the movie yet but from what I'm hearing from reviews, the issue with this new Ben-Hur is that the roles are reversed between Judah and Masala. Masala pleads with Judah to stand clear from Roman affairs and so it's Judah who finds redemption in the end by overcoming his own pride and arrogance as a prince.
And so while everyone is expecting the same exact story as Heston's Ben-Hur, it's a reversal story. If this is true, then I'm really excited and super PUMPED UP to see this!
Twist story and twist ending as exciting as Heston's Planet of the Apes! Although there's no Statue of Liberty at this point in time so don't expect to see one at the end of the movie. :)

I agree. I think Heston welcomed that remake of PLANET about as much as he'd have welcomed a hemorrhoid.
Oh, and speaking of this new version of BEN-HUR.... I sense a bomb! We'll see next week, but if I was an investor in that movie, I'd be nervous.

My guess is a resounding "no"... Why you ask: Because he wasn't even keen on the idea of a sequel to PLANET being made, so I sure can't see him lobbying for anybody to remake it... (I know it's been touted as a "reimagining", but for the sake of this post, it's called a remake...)
Heston seemed to be proud enough of APES, but I never seen him as feeling overly reminiscent about it, certainly not to the point of wanting it to be remade... It was a feather in his cap, and a classic one at that, and I think he was quite content to leave it at that...

BTW, might anyone know if Mr. Heston played a significant part in having POTA 2001 launched? Perhaps he nudged Oliver Stone and later Mr. Zanuck to feel reminiscent about the Apes and to consider a remake

Oh and by the way, Jack Huston (Judah Ben-Hur) is the grandson of John Huston (The Law-giver).
Ape-trivia :)

It was still pretty cool walking over the bridge and seeing the Pet Memorial. I tried to find some of the shops, but with the construction and not being able to start at the bridge, I'm not sure if I was close or not.

Overseas revenues yield less return for the studios, especially in China where they only get back 25% instead of the traditional 50% that the USA box office yields.
At any rate, has anyone here seen the remake of Ben Hur yet? Is it pretty good, like I bet that it is?

.html.html The ancient epics seem doomed. Don't know if Angelina Jolie will still get to do her dream project, "Cleopatra" (featuring Caesar! And Octavian, played by Roddy McDowall in the early '60's version). Fun fact: Heston considered "Antony and Cleopatra" Shakespeare's greatest play and directed a movie version in 1972, one of his rare directorial efforts.
Heston, "In the Arena"(1995): "It's the last of the great (Shakespearian) tragedies, written not long before his retirement, and shows in almost every scene the mature flowering of Shakespeare's talent. None of the plays can match the glories of the poetry, nor the rich development of every character… Cleopatra is the best woman's part in all of drama, and the hardest to play. Even the comedy, rare in tragedy and even more rarely funny, is beautifully done". On his own film of it, Heston said, "The sum of it was that the film I cared more about than any I've ever made was a failure". : ( Sent from Mail for Windows 10

.html.html .htmlPure speculation on my part, but I think it could include films he acted in as well... From the way he described the story, it seems he would have been heavily vested in directing it, so from that point of view, I could see where he was disappointed...
Yes, he lobbied for PLANET to be made, and was anxious to act in it, but in the end, it was something he was a part of but not a real part of the "creative side" of things... That said, while everyone here is a huge fan of APES, Heston himself may not have looked on it the same way we do... PLANET was a film he was a part of, but ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA was a film he "made", so there may have been a difference in the way he seen things...

Then again, the Ape movies have been hitching their wagon to "The Walking Dead" lately (Season 7 premieres Oct. 23) so could it be then? All I know is the summer movie season is pretty much over (better luck next time, studios) which means the POTA summer comes next (plus the return of "Twin Peaks" but that's beside the point). Good afternoon, everyone!
After all of these years, I've just added CBZ files of all 29
Marvel U.S. magazines to my Apes site. I've had scans for
years, but I never liked them, as many of the issues had really
bad moire patterns in all of the photos. Not too long ago, a
friend gave me his set of CBZ files, and I was pleased to discover
that not only weren't they the same files, his didn't have the
moire problems!
So I've added them all to my site.

Read the Wikipedia page about the book or Michelangelo and painting the Sistine Chapel before you'll watch and you'll enjoy it more.
Also, great music by Jerry Goldsmith and his favorite composer, Alex North, and the photography is Leon Shamroy. The Blu-ray is the one to watch though.

Here are a couple pictures also from the recent visit to LA, but in Malibu Creek State Park this time. Nothing no one hasn't seen before, just updated, I guess. There is now graffiti on a couple rocks by the human cages, including the rock that the building facade was built against. Also, when I stopped at the welcome center and mentioned the rock pool, they said it's been overrun by "young people" so it might not be what I was expecting. Wasn't too bad at the time I went, though. Some trash on the ground. The panoramic picture is from standing where Ape City used to be.

An apparently habitable Earth-like planet's discovery has been confirmed (after rigorous scrutiny) in the Alpha Centauri system, 25 travel years from Earth "with solar sail technology's usage".
Indeed, Solar sail technology could supposedly get us there in 25 regular (not light) years... Can we name a ship heading out there Icarus? At any rate, here's the article:
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/1666805/proxima-centaura-second-earth-planet-orbiting-earths-closest-neighbour-proxima-centauri-could-be-home-to-aliens/
If only NASA would offer adequately sized distance travel-related competitive prizes at http://www.Challenge.gov . We need incentivized and inspired folks in every neighborhood working on this stuff so that we can enhance our likelihood of making it out there during our lifetimes. NASA's simply offering contracts to a couple of companies here and there to pursue such technologies hasn't accomplished much for us. Competitive prizes inspire all tinkerers, inventors and dreamers (etc.) while relegating mere tax-leeching contractors to the back aisles.
Here's another technology that warrants competitive prize offering:

I don't know how much longer you plan to live, but I don't expect to be around for any major revelation. Besides, whatever life might be on this planet, it doesn't have radio, otherwise we'd have already detected it.

Here's some news that might particularly interest Landon, Dodge and Taylor (while making Pierre Boulle grin, as well):
An apparently habitable Earth-like planet's discovery has been confirmed (after rigorous scrutiny) in the Alpha Centauri system, 25 travel years from Earth "with solar sail technology's usage".
Indeed, Solar sail technology could supposedly get us there in 25 regular (not light) years... Can we name a ship heading out there Icarus? At any rate, here's the article:

I'll have to pay attention the next time I watch BENEATH, but I'm fairly
certain you see that same pointed outcropping of rock in the background of a few
different scenes. We do see the cave entrance- shot from a different angle-
towards the end of the film when the ape army discovers the "subterranean
passage", so I'll have to look and see if it's present there as well.

>>About the BENEATH cave location. We can't be sure, but that shot
where Brent and Nova arrive at where they will dismount their horses and Brent
looks up at that pointed outcrop of rock -- I think that's at a spot along the
Malibu Creek, north of where the Ape Town set was. I say this because I
have the entire "Daniel Boone" TV series on DVD and I'm still making my way
through the show. I watched an episode from season six the other day, and it had
someone driving a wagon along the creek and behind him was what looked to me to
be that same pointed rock area, only seen from the other side. Because of
the magic of film editing though, you really can't be sure that everything in a
given sequence was all shot in exactly the same place, so that cave may not be
near where we see Brent, Nova and the gorillas climbing among the rocks, or it
may be. Again, I'd have to actually visit the park to be sure.

There's a line the narrator speaks as the mutants depart the city "An army

impression that whomever was doing the adaptation was trying to beef the story
up a little bit. Coincidentally, I was just reading some reviews of David
Gerrold's BATTLE novelization that said BATTLE would have been a better
film had it used some of Gerrold's ideas.

Quite some time ago, I posted about a road trip I had taken where
I brought along a CD copy of all eight Power Records adaptations and got so

went by like nothing.

Don't forget the Power Records monster line. The Man-Thing story was about
a clown who committed suicide in the swamp and his ghost was haunting it. Also,
the stories they chose for Spider-Man, Captain America & The Falcon, and
Fantastic Four were exceptionally dark in tone. They were all adapted from
actual Marvel Comic books, and those were the kinds of stories they were telling
back then.
BTW, what does "OOT" mean?

For anyone who's going, I would suggest plenty of water for the walk. I also went to the MASH site after Ape City and back when it was about 95 degrees and sunny, and I should have had a full gallon of water. It was like walking through a desert. Also walked on the other side of Century Lake across from Ape City. Total distance was about 6.5 miles including the human cages and rock pool.
Well worth the effort, and a definite highlight of the trip.

.htmlAccording to the nice folks at Alamo Drafthouse (a nationwide niche movie chain which showed POTA (1968) nationwide tonight and which has branches here in Houston... including at the Vintage Park location with which I just spoke which is portrayed on the far right here: https://drafthouse.com/houston/theaters ) Planet of the Apes (1968):
https://drafthouse.com/houston/show/planet-of-the-apes
sold about 70 tickets for its 7:30 p.m. showing tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 30th). They showed it in one of their largest theaters so it was about 1/3 full. Meanwhile they reportedly only have a couple of T-shirts left, having sold several dozen (perhaps most when tickets were still selling for $30 each, t-shirt included, before prices recently fell to $10 without the shirt). It seems that they make their money on concessions like popcorn. :-)
Anyhow when I saw POTA (1968) last month here via the Fathom Events venue at a major movie chain (I think AMC), there were a whopping 10 (ten) folks present on a Sunday afternoon.
Anyhow, Alamo did this in conjunction with Mondo, which reportedly makes niche trinkets ranging from t-shirts to vinyl record soundtracks, patches & mugs (etc.). Mondo's reportedly based in Austin, TX a city which clings to its slogan "keep Austin weird". Until tonight, I didn't have much appreciation for that slogan but now I admittedly do. :-)
Anyway, interestingly enough, Michi (a nice young Japanese-American gal who works at the abovementioned branch of Alamo and will hopefully get prooted to manager there someday) this theater chain will likely show POTA (1968) again either in several months or maybe a year or so. It depends on the marketing team's evaluation but in POTA's favor, she says the movie's well done, and she personally observed incoming folks for the show. When asked, she told me that there was a healthy mixture of age groups represented, (mainly) from the 20s to the 60s. (It is a school night, after all.)
I asked her how one can learn of its future release date and she recommended subscribing to their e-mail newsletter(s).
Curiously enough, Alamo's having a "SeptemBurton" extravaganza during the upcoming month. Tim Burton's hits will be showed throughout the month, including Batman and Batman Returns... I asked her about POTA 2001 though, and she said she does not think so. She said they're more inclined to show Burtonesque shows like Edward Scissorhands and Alice Through the Looking Glass. ME: And yet they're showing Batman 1.
Anyhow, we've got a lot to be proud of in that our cherished movie is still making the big screen in private sector venues even half a century after its initial release. Nice going, fellow fans! We helped make it possible.
Out of gratitude, maybe the next time we want to see a vintage film, we'll Remember the Alamo. :-)
In full disclosure, I have no ties to either Mondo or Alamo, but POTA (1968) is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. I "grew up" with it. :-) <.html

Check out this aerial photo of Ape City from 1967. Looks like it was during the construction period - about the same time as the picture next to it. Can't make out the buildings too well, but they're there.

I saw it in yonkers New York , the theatre was sold out! The
managar only ordered limited amount of pins which were completely sold out well
before showing started. As to the red ape tees , sold with ticket . and extras
he ordered were gone well before show started as well. Manager DID
NOT order second tee or record, dozens of fans requested these items . So
it was a great success here in new york i would say.
In a message dated 8/30/2016 11:09:03 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
pota@yahoogroups.com writes:
According to the nice folks at Alamo Drafthouse (a nationwide niche
movie chain which showed POTA (1968) nationwide tonight and which has branches
here in Houston... including at the Vintage Park location with which I just
spoke which is portrayed on the far right here:
https://drafthouse.com/houston/theaters ) Planet of the Apes (1968):
https://drafthouse.com/houston/show/planet-of-the-apes sold about
70 tickets for its 7:30 p.m. showing tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 30th). They showed
it in one of their largest theaters so it was about 1/3 full. Meanwhile they
reportedly only have a couple of T-shirts left, having sold several dozen
(perhaps most when tickets were still selling for $30 each, t-shirt included,
before prices recently fell to $10 without the shirt). It seems that they make
their money on concessions like popcorn. :-)
Anyhow when I saw POTA
(1968) last month here via the Fathom Events venue at a major movie chain (I
think AMC), there were a whopping 10 (ten) folks present on a Sunday
afternoon.
Anyhow, Alamo did this in conjunction with Mondo, which
reportedly makes niche trinkets ranging from t-shirts to vinyl record
soundtracks, patches & mugs (etc.). Mondo's reportedly based in Austin, TX
a city which clings to its slogan "keep Austin weird". Until tonight, I didn't
have much appreciation for that slogan but now I admittedly do.
:-)
Anyway, interestingly enough, Michi (a nice young Japanese-American
gal who works at the abovementioned branch of Alamo and will hopefully get
prooted to manager there someday) this theater chain will likely show POTA
(1968) again either in several months or maybe a year or so. It depends on the
marketing team's evaluation but in POTA's favor, she says the movie's well
done, and she personally observed incoming folks for the show. When asked, she
told me that there was a healthy mixture of age groups represented, (mainly)
from the 20s to the 60s. (It is a school night, after all.)
I asked her
how one can learn of its future release date and she recommended subscribing
to their e-mail newsletter(s).
Curiously enough, Alamo's having a
"SeptemBurton" extravaganza during the upcoming month. Tim Burton's hits will
be showed throughout the month, including Batman and Batman Returns... I asked
her about POTA 2001 though, and she said she does not think so. She said
they're more inclined to show Burtonesque shows like Edward Scissorhands and
Alice Through the Looking Glass. ME: And yet they're showing Batman 1.
Anyhow, we've got a lot to be proud of in that our cherished movie is
still making the big screen in private sector venues even half a century after
its initial release. Nice going, fellow fans! We helped make it possible.
Out of gratitude, maybe the next time we want to see a vintage film,
we'll Remember the Alamo. :-)
In full disclosure, I have no ties to
either Mondo or Alamo, but POTA (1968) is quite possibly my favorite movie of
all time. I "grew up" with it. :-)

Initially I found the site while looking for old aerials of my house, then thought to look at Ape City. Luckily, they had one from 1967, then nothing until 1977 (all gone). You can also see the clubhouse that once stood at the human cages site from 1947 (attached).
Not sure where I got the picture on the right, but equally as cool.

I watched it. Well, actually, I only watched a little of the RETURN TO THE POTA cartoon, as I have it on DVD and in better quality than what El Rey Network is showing. Also, I only get the El Rey Network in standard definition TV and actually have to zoom the picture to get the cartoons to be full 4:3 in the middle on the 16X9 TV I have.
Anyway, what I really wanted to see was the 1967 Filmation JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, which I haven't seen since either the very late sixties or early seventies.
It was fun to see that again, that is fun until I noticed how dreadful it was... but I still enjoyed it as much as I could. I DVR'd them and watched them later in the morning. I'll probably do it again this Saturday, but I think my interest with be satiated by then.

I saw both Journey to the Center of the Earth and Fantastic Voyage on
Channel 5 (WNEW) back in the 70's when they ran both shows back-to-back from 4
to 5PM. Whenever I watch programs now (as an adult) that I also watched as a
child- and this is especially true of anything animated- I always try to keep it
in perspective of the era it came from. Both of them were pretty ambitious in
the fact that there was an ongoing backstory- albeit moreso with Journey-
and they also originally came out when there was a boom in more adventure-themed
animation such as Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, The Herculoids, all the Filmation
Superhero programs (Superman, Aquaman, Batman) etc in the late 60's. In the
70's, the successors were Return to the Planet of the Apes, Star Trek: The
Animated Series and (to an extent) Emergency + 4. Like Journey to the Center of
the Earth, Return also had a ongoing backstory and those are the only two
cartoon series (from that era) I can think of that did. Which may be why they're
getting grouped together on El Rey now.

Considering the fact that "Saturday Morning Cartoons" are a thing of the
past (at least in the way we used to know them), it's nice to see two programs
from the heyday being broadcast again- even if they do start at 6 in the
morning. And like Bill mentioned, watching them does tend to have a positive
effect. So everyone in this group should make an effort of some sort to actually
watch/record/DVR them.
