Here's something you don't see everyday! Here's a 1968 Japanese Manga magazine promoting the original Planet of the Apes film! I know nothing else about this, so if you have more knowledge, please let me know!

Thanks to Lori for the scans! It's been added to the Magazines page.

Way back in May 1964, Saga: Magazine for Men ran an abridged version of Pierre Boulle's original novel that inspired Planet of the Apes. Thanks to Lori, scans of the abridgement are now available for your reading pleasure!

It's been added to the Magazines page.

Thanks to JamesA1102, his PDF version of Marvel's adaptation of Battle for the Planet of the Apes is now available.

Just click here to download: Movie Comics

Thanks, James!

Thanks to Lori, scans of Toys from the Attic, Catalog #3, September 1995, have been added to the new Catalogs page. Toys from the Attic is a price-guide/checklist of Apesmemorabilia.
Thanks to Lori, scans of the July 1998 AMC Cable TCA Press Tour transcript have been added to the AMC 30th Anniversary page.
Thanks to Lori, scans of the Wonderland Records release of "Apes' Shuffle" have been added to the Soundtracks page.

Keeping with the theme (although this was the 1976 rebroadcast): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOnnGegq3vQ Also worth checking out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBV5E7cwhHw And for those of us who grew up in the Tri-state area in the 70's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R13tN5I1w2k I never could find anything from any of the BENEATH airings. Yet, anyway. Chris L. ____________________________________________________________

Back in the 90's I taped Roddy McDowell's intros to the Sci Fi Channel's "Planet of the Apes" Week. At the time it seemed like they would wind up being rare. BUT nothing is rare these days when anything you want is an ebay away and whatever you thought was so unique is probably on youtube. Well, that™s also a good thing.

Anyway , Eric Greene sent me a link to over an hour of outtakes from Roddy™s Sci-Fi shoot. That™s definitely under the category of a good thing.

Yep. I uploaded that footage to YouTube, but hadn't had time to post them here yet.

Roddy McDowall's birthday seems like a great day to post this! In 1993, the Sci-Fi Channel hired Roddy McDowall to host APES Week, a screening of all five¦

I also uploaded:

Roddy McDowall - Sci-Fi Channel Apes Week bumpers

Roddy McDowall - Sci-Fi Channel - Planet of the Apes TV series promos

The latter two are what was actually aired. They were on the first Apes Rarities DVD I did way back when.

Happy Apetober!

Despite the uncertainty with the Disney/Fox merger, I'm getting good vibes that we may see more Apes movies. Disney honcho Bob Iger has said they want to keep the 20th Century Fox brand intact. And now it looks like Fox's Emma Watts will continue running the show at Fox (which will now be a division of Disney instead of it's own company).

Watts was a big Apes booster at Fox. It™s still up to the Disney brain trust whether there will be more but if they want it Emma has all the Apesters on her speed dial. "Apes" producer Dylan Clark told me not only would he be interested in doing more but he thinks there SHOULD be more. Director Matt Reeves is off in Batman land so there would prob need to be a new director (maybe Watts™ old boss Oliver Stone?).

But the new era of Fox is starting to take shape and we should have some answers soon.

Subject: new Apes movies under Disney?

Disney has officially announced who will run Fox when the Mouse embraces it in early 2019. They are bringing over pretty much the same crew that's already been running it.

Emma Watts (a big Apes booster) will run 20th Century Fox; Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula will run the acclaimed independent film branch Fox Searchlight (which won the Best Picture Oscar this year for "The Shape of Water"); Elizabeth Gabler will run Fox 2000; Andrea Miloro, Robert Baird will top Fox Animation; and Vanessa Morrison with Fox Family. Alan Horn is chairman of Disney Studios and will be head honcho..

Disney topper Bob Iger sez: "Under Alan Horn's leadership, Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm have reached unprecedented levels of creative and box office success, and adding Fox's impressive film brands and franchises to ourstudio will allow us to create even more appealing high-quality entertainment to delight audiences".

Sounds like they will continue to let Fox do their thing. But that is a lot of content under one roof and Apes might draw the short stick. Part of the reason Fox kept taking a chance on Apes wuz they didn't have a lot of huge franchises. Apes is now a small fish in a big pond. But the last 3 films recently did over $1 billion so Disney is probably kicking the tires. And if they do more, will there be the creative freedom to do social commentary, etc. that it's known for? Too soon to tell but keeping the Fox brain trust is a good start.

I think this is a beautiful book!

Rinzler doesn't seem to have unearthed much new himself, mostly quoting other sources but the photographs - many of which I've never seen - make it more than worthwhile.

Superb quality presentation make this a worthy 50th anniversary tribute.

    Totally agree.

Rinzler said in an interview he'd love to do more Ape books but it probably won't happen under Disney.

He did Star Wars books for years but left when Disney bought it..

Fox has been very accommodating to the 50th anniversary this year as they say buh-bye.

He's currently doing a book about "Alien" while he still can.

It wuz 25 years ago today (12/4/93) that Charlton Heston ape-peared on Saturday Night Live and opened with an elaborate POTA skit. I remember being blown away, compounded by Oliver Stone having recently been announced for a new Ape movie (Los Angeles Times, 10/24/93). It wuz the Big Bang of a POTA revival that resulted in POTA2001 (with a Heston cameo), "Rise", "Dawn" and "War".

At the time of SNL, the original POTA was 25. Now it's 50 and this skit is 25 (see how that works?).

I guess only the monologue exists on youtube, not the skit but I have the whole thing somewhere.

I VHSed the whole thing that night. But I couldn't believe it as I watched it.

I was doing "Ape Chronicles" at the time and this on the heels of Oliver Stone (my favorite director) being announced for a new movie ¦ it's the closest I've come to a Jesus moment.

      .html
      .html

Well, it wuz a mixed 50th anniversary year for POTA. Lots of new books and comics, a fantastic retrospective at USC that Fox helped with. But also the future in question as POTA goes off the Disney cliff.

And of course the loss of outspoken fan (and my friend) Rory. I finished the year reading two books Rory would've loved (though of course found nits to pick): J.W. Rinzler's "Making of POTA" and Michael Benson's "Space Odyssey".

Apes and "2001" were the ultimate cultural double bill in 1968 and they will always be linked in my mind as early subversive sci-fi (and both about apes and space travel and the destiny of Man). 25 years ago I called them œblood brothers".

Hopefully 2019 will give us an indication of where Disney plans to take Apes for the NEXT 50 years (if you think Disney won't be here in 50 years, forget it ¦ well, unless no one's here in 50 years).

Meanwhile, the best to you and yours in the coming year!

Today is the last day of POTA's 50th anniversary.

Can't wait until the 100th anniversary. I wish it was here now!

Enter the Disney era. Hope they won't be Dumbos about it.

It's weird that you wrote this on February 7th and it didn't show up until the 10th (which originally confused me in terms of you referring to the last day of the 50th anniversary). I wonder if the Disney/Fox merger included a takeover of Yahoo and the same person who came up with the 30th Anniversary cover showing the Statue of Liberty is in charge of Yahoo Groups now. Which would either be a promotion or demotion depending on one's point of view...

Also the scene behind Urko right shoulder appears to be from the first film ("The Hunt"), and you could make a case for the scene in the lower right being from Beneath as that's the only time in either the original five films/TV series I recall a large amount of gorilla soldiers out in the desert. That being said, it could be something from the RETURN series as well.

That means on March 20, wait for it, POTA will belong to Disney.

      What does that mean? Dunno.

That matters if a UHD 4K remaster/release of the classic movies happens.

This week the movie studios presented their wares at CinemaCon in Vegas.

It also provided the first official confirmation from Fox since being swallowed by Disney that they will continue the "Apes" films in some fashion (as well as "Alien").

Will they pick up from the recent films or start over? Remains 2 be seen.

Emma Watts remains the head of Fox and is a big "Apes" cheerleader so it's probably in good hands if Disney doesn't interfere too much. Reportedly Fox's deal with œApes" producer Peter Chernin is still in place so my guess is they™ll pick up where they left off.

It is encouraging and not really a surprise since the last films have done OK from a financial perspective (at least as far as I know). I wish they had more definitive plans to share but at least it's not bad news.

Would anybody know more what's happening on the comics end of things? I have a "Planet of the Apes" title alert that kicks in at my local comic shop when new titles are announced by diamond but now that the POTA releases have slowed to a trickle I haven't even been to my shop in over a month. I'm still awaiting for the WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE issue to get to my shop but after that I haven't heard of anything else.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen *any* of them on the big screen before. My introduction to the Apes was the TV series as an 11 year old so I missed them all at the movies.

Subject: [pota] Cinema screening of original 5 films in Australia

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this today.

Coming up in July, all 5 of the original films are being shown on the huge screen at The Astor Theatre here in Melbourne.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen *any* of them on the big screen before. My introduction to the Apes was the TV series as an 11 year old so I missed them all at the movies.

            Very excited about this.

I'm currently working on a restoration of the 1975 NATO film for Logan's Run. Similar to the NATO film for Beneath the Planet of the Apes, it also runs just under 13 minutes and is a combo of film footage that would eventually end up in the theatrical release as well as containing extended/deleted footage. Once I finish work on Logan's Run, I would like to make the Beneath NATO film my next restoration project. However, I'm lacking a decent element from which to work.  Does anyone have, or know someone who has, a 35mm print of the Beneath NATO film?

More info about the Logan's Run NATO restoration:

For reference, here is the Beneath NATO film (sourced from a pan&scan VHS):

An admirable effort to be certain, although I would imagine that turning one up is going to be something of a challenge. If memory serves, I think Joe Russo said that he came across it when he was digging around looking for old video footage to use as research for his book. He mentioned that all the different "rarities" video clips eventually made their way onto VHS and were sold at Sci-Fi conventions, so that more than likely places the conversation I had with him in the late 90's because it was before the book came out. Not even sure if he's part of the group anymore, but he has a Facebook page here:
https://www.facebook.com/Planet-of-the-Apes-Revisited-Book-292326854248167/?tn-str=k*F (James- you'll more than likely need to fix the link as they never seem to work when I send them)

My Rarities #3 DVD included the Beneath NATO film, but the quality isn't really any better than your YouTube link above. Of course, neither are suitable for what you want to do. Unfortunately, I no longer remember who sent me the NATO film or where that person got it.

I had the film transferred in 1984 onto Betamax tape from the original film reels...it has circulated and been copied over and over ever since.

            Joe,
By chance do you still have the film reel? My goal is to find a 35mm reel, get it digitally scanned at 2k and then perform a restoration from that scan.

New owner Disney continues to beat the drum that they will continue "Planet of the Apes" in some form.

At an earnings call Tuesday, Disney head Robert Iger mentioned some of their Fox properties that will make a comeback (including reboots of "Home Alone" and "A Night At the Museum" for their new streaming service Disney +).

He said there is œgreat long term value in the broad collection of theatrical IP we acquired from Fox, including . . . œAvatar" and œPlanet of the Apes".

How Apes will continue remains to be seen, though reportedly the producer of the recent acclaimed "Apes" movies, Chernin Entertainment, has been retained by Disney, so it's possible they could continue from the Caesar trilogy.

Or they could just start over. Who knows about the future?

Also the scene behind Urko right shoulder appears to be from the first film ("The Hunt"), and you could make a case for the scene in the lower right being from Beneath as that's the only time in either the original five films/TV series I recall a large amount of gorilla soldiers out in the desert. That being said, it could be something from the RETURN series as well.

              Hello guys,

Just dropping you all a short email to let you know that I am back online and should be active on the APES group(s) again soon... I never left the APES boards, just other crap got in the way which prevented me from posting...

Between losing my email password when AOL switched to a different format, and now dealing with other issues for the last five months, I was not able to get online... Chris, when I snail mailed you last Summer, you mentioned maybe trying the local library for Internet access, but I never gave that a try... This last weekend, when my sister was in town, we were able to get things straightened out with AOL, so I'm glad about that... Now I have nearly 20 pages of emails to get caught up on...

Also, do any of you guys know if a new issue of "Simian Scrolls" is in the works/due to be released soon (if it hasn't been already)? I don't recall the number of the last issue I received, but it was the one with the Ron Stein (TV series player) interview...

              Mike

Hey Jeff, John from long island NY.
Been a while. Hope all is well. Rory and I go way back, to an article he wrote for The Perfect Vision. We discussed this when Rory passed.
                Disney, oy vey.
Im interested in 4k transfers of all original 5 Apes films.
Go Ape happened again in a much smaller way in Manhattan last August. The films were all redone from original negatives apparently. I missed it #$%.

The audio cd discs just released from Varese Sarabande through Lala Land are incredible sounding.
I hope when the Apes 1968-73 films are redone in 4k hdr these audio stems are used.I

Rory would have loved the 2001 remaster in 4k Dolby Vision. Shame. I miss arguing with him.

                All my Ape love, John

As far as saying it'd be cool if these APES groups continue, when I'm back online/accessing my email on a regular basis, I'll be doing my part to keep the groups alive...

Since I wasn't online at the time it happened, I didn't find out about Rory until a few months after the fact, when I had snail mailed Chris... It is too bad that he's gone, and you're right, he was extremely passionate about APES, and I'd say the first film in particular was his biggest passion (and I can see why, though I enjoy all of the original films and the two TV series)...

I agree with your statement about Disney giving APES one shot, and if it's not up to financial par by their standards, it'd probably be the end of it for them... Even if they'd do an APES film, and it'd be a hit, I have a feeling that it'll always be treated as the redheaded stepchild of their franchises, since they own the almighty STAR WARS, which will take precedent over anything APES... I know their "Solo: A Star Wars Story" film didn't do the business they were hoping for, so I'm not sure how hot they are to do another STAR WARS film, but I'd still tend to think it'll be SW over APES for them any day of the week... I'm sure not counting on a wildly successful APES film from Disney, with potential off-shoot films as they're doing with SW...

I know we have members from the UK on the board, and I was just wondering if the POWER Records album with the four TV series based stories was released over there in the 70s? (There were the three stories released on mini 33 1/3 records-"Mountain of the Delphi", "Dawn of the Tree People", "Battle of Two Worlds" and the bonus LP story, "Volcano")? If so, any idea how well they went down with UK Apes fans?

Personally, I've always liked them, and feel they capture the feel and spirit of the TV series pretty well, considering they were marketed toward kids/as kids records... I don't care for they way they have it that Galen is an archeologist/scientist, and it's annoying that Zaius is referred to as "Dr. Zaius" and Urko as "General Urko" since they were actually Chief Councillor Zaius and Chief of Security Urko, but I can overlook that, since other products refer to them that way as well... I think "Volcano" is probably the best of them, and it's a shame the actual TV series didn't go on, as it would have been cool to see them doing stories based more on the apes' culture/cultural differences...

Ever wonder what became of those giant Scarecrows?
How about those oak trees Taylor saw at the top of that mesa?
Do you want to know what was shot and not used?
Want the dirt on shots planned but not filmed?

In LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! author John O'Callaghan answers these questions by sharing his life-long journey to find the exact filming locations for Franklin J. Schaffner's classic 1968 film, PLANET OF THE APES”including the recent discovery that several key sites in the badlands of Utah haven't been touched by Man (or Ape) since the crew finished shooting in 1967.

Incredible discoveries and previously unknown research about the work of filmmaker Franklin J. Schaffner provide clarity and humor to the history before, during and after the three-month shoot of PLANET OF THE APES.

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! features a wealth of more than 150 color photos. A must-have volume for every fan of PLANET OF THE APES or the history of film production.

                .html Hi,
I had one of these I am sure and for the life of me I cannot remember the title.
Not sure they were actually released in the Uk although I bought mine in a comic and sci-fi store in Reading UK.

Hello all I have been a member of this group for some years, but usually am more of a lurker to be honest. Anyways I think it is a great group and I love the discussions, etc. I am a huge POTA fan starting a kid in the 70s. Actually I may of seen BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES first on TV and in a comic book. As a kid the two first films were almost mixed up in my head at times. Anyways I am an artist/illustrator and I decided last year to create a fast 50th Anniversary digital painting tribute of POTA which was a blast to do! I probably will do one for each film as each one hits it's 50th anniversary. Oh yes one cool thing going on in my area is a theater in SF may be doing one of those GO APE! film festivals in Nov. where you can see all 5 of the original APES films! So I hope to do that as I have never seen any of them on the big screen. Anyways hope you enjoy my tribute image and have a great Saturday out there. Cheers!
