Thanks to Harry Barnes, a slew of new images and international pressbooks and flyers have been added to the Archive! That includes 59 high-res slides, and advertising materials from Brazil, Argentina, France, Belgium, and Spain.

Also thanks to Harry, the article from the November 2, 1974, issue of Look-in magazine has been added to the Magazines page. I also added CBZ versions of most of the magazine articles a couple of weeks ago.

And thanks to Greg Champy, five more of his autograph cards have been added.

.html And today's addition....

Thanks to Harry Barnes, here's a unique promotional item: an LP provided to radio stations to promote Escape from the Planet of the Apes. The LP features "open" interviews with Kim Hunter and Roddy McDowall, allowing local DJs to "interview". Side 2 of the LP features a 14-minute featurette hosted by Dick Strout, in which he talks with Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Sal Mineo, and director Don Taylor.

You can listen to and download MP3s of the LP from the Escape Radio LP page.

Last night I wuz at USC for the "Rise" screening and the "Business of the POTA" panel (about the comic books, books, fan stuff and Fox's care and feeding of them). Hunter's site got a mention as one of the best Ape sites around. I also won Gary Gerani's POTA Topps cards book.

More details after the series ends Sunday..

    Subject: Yet MORE PotA books
    .html
Just after hearing about the "Locataion" book, there are even MORE PotA books coming out of the woodworks:

    BOOK 1:
    ------------

Our friend Saulo Adami is putting out his 4th PotA book but what makes this exceptional is that (A) it will be in English and (B) has a Graham Hill cover.

    The blurb:

This is Saulo Adami's newest book on "Planet of the Apes". "Talking Apes" tells the story of the screen
test with Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Linda Harrison and James Brolin, who convinced 20th Century
Fox to produce the Franklin J. Schaffner movie. The book also presents the history of the film in Brazil,
the work of Adami as researcher and author of four other books on this subject; the versions produced for
the cinema and the TRV in Brazil, the fan club created in 1984 and the fan "CVentury city News" (1985).
The book can be purchased at the following addresses:

    Loja Estronho: https://www.lojaestronho.com..br/livros/cinema-tv-teatro-e-musica/cinema/talking-apes

    Amazon: https://amzn.to/2qsmQDM

My only problem is that both sales points listed are all in Spanish. :(

    BOOK 2:
    ------------

Greg Keyes who wrote the novel adaptations for Dawn and War will have an original novel called "Planet of the Apes: Caesar's Story". Will be picking this one up for sure.

I got a note from Saulo to correct a few things and a bit more info.

This is Saulo's fifth PotA book not his fourth (the guy is a PotA writing machine!).

He prefers buyers to contact him directly by e-mail for purchase: saulo.adami@...

The price of the book (including shipping!):
    - US $ 25.00 (USA / Canada);
    - 20 Euro (Europe)

While he does not accept Paypal, you might be able to purchase with a trade as he is an avid PotA collector and may consider items he does not have.

It's hard to believe it has been 11 years since the 2007 Memorabilia convention in the UK. I've long offered videos from the event in the Archive, but I've now added higher-quality versions of the videos that are embedded on the page (and can be downloaded), as well as added a 20-minute video slideshow of photos from the event.

    The videos available are:

    • Darren Stockford's overview of the event, with clips of Linda Harrison, Buck Kartalian, and various Apes fans, including John Roche and Dave Ballard.
    • Rob Reading's recording of Les Hemworth's interview of Linda Harrison and Buck Kartalian
    • The Memorabilia 2007 Photo Slideshow

All can be found on the Memorabilia 2007 page.

I wish I was contacting you with better news.  I thought I should let you and the kind folks at the Apes Yahoo! Group know that our Fellow Apes aficionado, and my friend Rory Monteith, died tragically and unnecessarily on March 30, 2018 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had recently become extremely depressed after losing his job, was uninterested in seeking treatment, legally purchased a handgun and took his own life.

I was lucky enough to spend time with him last May when he accompanied me on the journey of a lifetime, when we located and visited several Planet of the Apes locations in Utah untouched by man (or ape) since the crew left in May 1967.

Rory was very generous, extremely bright, possessed a razor-sharp wit and was devoted to Planet of the Apes from the time he was 8 years old.. I'll miss him.

That's terrible news. I never met Rory in person but I've known him about 25 years from snail mail and the internet. It's hard to imagine there's a bigger fan of the original POTA movie. I learned a lot from him about it. Any POTA news won't be the same without him, that's for sure. He was a big voice here.

Thanks for letting us know, John.

      RIP my friend.

Just wanted to say a few words now that I've been able to absorb this news.

I first met Rory 17 years ago when I joined this group. At first we clashed, a lot (and I've made sure to spell a lot correctly because it drove him crazy when someone wrote a lot). But over time we grew to respect each other and ultimately became friends.

While Rory could be harsh and had a rough exterior, he did have a kind heart once you got to know him. And his love of POTA, especially the original film, was unwavering.

      He will be missed.

I guess that's pretty much it for the Yahoo groups.

Rory and I could still hold a conversation. It's a Facebook world now and we're just living in it.

I enjoyed the idea of a place people could come to instead of looking for everyone's Facebook page.

A lot of good memories here. I've been thinking about it this weekend.

Anyway, it was a fun two decades and we got to cap it off with a solid Apes trilogy. Now Disney will probably bury it.

RIP Rory and RIP POTA Yahoo.

        Hi James, Jeff and Hunter,
I wish I was contacting you with better news.  I
thought I should let you and the kind folks at the Apes
Yahoo! Group know that our Fellow Apes
aficionado, and my friend Rory Monteith, died tragically and
        unnecessarily on March 30, 2018 from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound. He had recently become extremely depressed
after losing his job, was uninterested in seeking treatment,
legally purchased a handgun and took his own life.
I was lucky enough to spend time with him last May when
he accompanied me on the journey of a lifetime, when we
located and visited several Planet of the Apes
locations in Utah untouched by man (or ape) since the crew
        left in May 1967.
Rory was very generous, extremely bright, possessed a
razor-sharp wit and was devoted to Planet of the
Apes from the time he was 8 years old... I'll miss
        him.

Please don't give on one this group because of the recent tragic event.

Rory's passing has been quite disheartening but I think he of all people would hope that this group continues on. While I'm well familiar with the Facebook groups and do see benefits they have to offer, I still hope that this group keeps going for the very reason that some are reluctant to join other social networks and they should have a place to go. This is that place.

We're a small group, and sadly smaller today, but I still read all posts faithfully and get a lot of information here first and hope that continues.

Last night I had my Rory tribute. I watched the original movie, not the whole thing but my favorite scenes.

Then I have a Jerry Goldsmith CD, I guess it's called "Jerry Goldsmith" where he conducts the London Symphony. It's his best stuff but there's no POTA (Rory wouldn't approve!). I listened to that. You can't go wrong with the original movie and Jerry Goldsmith for Rory.

Then I watched the end of "War 4" (Rory's last Apes movie), with Caesar's death. And then the great "War" extras about POTA history. Basically Fox's 50th anniversary tributes.

I ended with Jim Morrison's wonderful finale in "American Prayer (another guy who went too soon): "These mutants, blood meal for the plant that's plowed. They are waiting to take us under the severed garden… I will not go. Prefer a feast of friends to the giant kingdom".

            RIP Rory.

That sounds like a great idea.  I will watch the original one more time in honor of Rory.  It's just a shame we will not have any more pointed commentary from Rory on any number of subjects.  I do hope that the book by John O'Callaghan is released from his and Rory's adventures at Lake Powell, I'm really looking forward to that.  He will be missed.

            Happy Friday!

It has been a while since we've done this, but to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our favorite movie we are proud to offer group members a downloadable PDF version of Marvel's comic adaptation.

Just click here to download: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AhEAgJD9hQEJvbBqP8_O_-vtrtrQLQ

If anyone as a problem with that link, the PDF will be available on Hunter's site shortly.

And we will be releasing PDFs of Marvel's comic versions of all five original films, one a month for the next few months.

            Have a great weekend everyone!

Enormous thanks to everyone involved in this generous project. Have just downloaded the first one, it's amazing and so great to be able to carry it around with me on my tablet and laptop, and revisit the pages that thrilled me as a teenager without having to unpack the actual comics (which I am increasingly reluctant to do for fear of damaging them).

            Just wonderful....thank you so much.

Hi John, good to hear from you.

It will be interesting to see what Disney does with the Fox archive. I assume they will inherit those mines with all the lost footage. Maybe a pregnant Nova scene is in our future?

It's all new to Disney. Maybe they will come at Apes from a different angle than Fox and release the stuff we've been pining for all these years.

Great to hear from you also Jeff.
Back in the old days of 1980 I had a correspondence with a guy I will call "Deep Throat" . He lived in Pennsylvania and said verimently that a two channel mag track of the original Apes film and unmixed tracks from three sequels were in his possession or he 'knew' were they were.
His add was in a rag similiar to the Monster Times and Pond Scum. Never got any definitive proof but when the subject was brought up to some Fox execs they said they heard the same thing but dont have the money or logistics to hunt for them.
Just alittle urban legend that I wish would get proved. Rory would hate this talk.  With so many time period common movies getting salvaged im willing to believe something better is out there, has to be.
Keep fighting the good fight, Jeff, John M.

CNN has a 4 part documentary on for the 50th anniversary of 1968. In part one they acknowledge some of the movies, including POTA. Rick Perlstein (author of "Nixonland") sez, "This was a hit. It captured something deep in the psyche of America".

This series, produced by our dear Tom Hanks, is worth a watch for a deep dive into the year POTA was released. If you missed it it'll repeat forever.

In another cautionary tale for the Twitter age, TV star Rosanne tweeted that, let's just say, someone is a POTA love child. The remark was condemned as racist and now ABC has cancelled the #1 show in America, the reboot of her hit show from 20 years ago.

Fun fact: her TV husband John Goodman played John Chambers in "Argo".

For sci-fi fans it's a great look at various sci-fi subjects (aliens, robots, etc.).

There are 6 episodes total. The episode "Dark Futures" does right by POTA and is worth a watch.

But I say the whole series is worth a watch if you get AMC on your cable provider.

The book tells thehi story of the Ape Test production with Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Linda Harrison and James Brolin, which gave rise to the classic "Planet of the Apes" (1968). The script of Rod Serling, the rehearsal and filming, the makeup created by Ben Nye ... And a little bit of the "Planet of the Apes" history in Brazil (fan club, fanzine, books ...). The future home of Fox's assets (including POTA) just got trickier. Comcast (home of Universal Pictures) has put in a bid of $65 billion (all cash) for the company despite the Fox powers that be agreeing to a $52.4 billion (all stock) sale to Disney.

Fox will discuss the Comcast offer Wednesday at a scheduled meeting.

I think in the end Disney will get the goods because, well, Disney always wins (except with "Solo" – yikes!).

But a Comcast victory might be a good thing in the POTA department. Disney has successful franchises coming out of their Mickey Mouse ears (Marvel, Star Wars, etc.) and there's a chance POTA could get neglected.

Comcast could use more franchises. Their Universal has been pretty successful (incl. the new Jurassic World 2, already at $400 million worldwide) but there's plenty of room to continue Apes.

Dylan Clark, producer of the recent Apes movies, actually has a deal at Universal, producing movies for them like a new Battlestar Galactica and a new Scarface.

Chernin Entertainment, the Apes production company, has experience producing the big Tom Cruise sci-fi epic "Oblivion" at Universal. It wasn't a hit but a foot in the door.

So if Comcast got the rights the new POTA could pick up where they left off pronto.

How POTA would fit in the Disney image is less clear.

As a home theater buff, I actually hope Disney LOSES due to the way they seem to use the Atmos 3D audio standard for immersive UHD and BluRay releases.

I'll explain: most 2017 and earlier consumer A/V receivers and pre/pros from the initial rollout of Atmos in 2014/2015 can handle 7 floor speakers (front left/center/right, left/right side surrounds, left right rear surrounds) and 4 height speakers (left/right top front and top rear most typically), as well as a subwoofer LFE channel. In A/V speak, we call that 7.1.4.

However, a few new consumer A/V processors can use more speakers: front wide speakers (between the front mains and side surrounds), top middles between the front, etc. Atmos is capable of up to 24 floor speakers and 10 height speakers (+LFE), with the extra speakers creating a greater sense of realism by rendering to the available number of speakers you have ("object passthrough"). I have a hi-end processor from Trinnov Audio in my home theater that has 13 floor speakers and 6 height speakers. Not so nuts, but pricey, to do this, yet it works well on the 200 or so Atmos releases that make fuller use of the standards.

Why does this matter? Well, most UHD and BDs are scalable like this, so you could buy a copy of Gravity or The Matrix and the more speakers your processor can handle with Atmos, the better your room might sound. But…Disney seems to be pre-rendering (printing) most of their releases to a fixed 7.1.4 .

So, if Disney get Fox, we might have a relatively neutered version of Apes coming out as far as Atmos goes.

Pure and simple, Disney is evil.

From how they manipulate copyright laws to how they corner markets. I'm surprised they have not been put under greater scrutiny for monopoly laws so far.

Hope Comcast wins out as I believe there is a better chance for POTA development with them.

Disney upped it's bid to $71 billion from Comcast's $63 billion.

Plus MSN reports that the Justice Dept. is about 2 weeks away from approving the Disney deal.

It's hard to imagine Comcast coming up with a tempting enough offer to thwart a done deal.

Looks like POTA will relocate to the Happiest Place on Earth.

Anyone who has been following ape intelligence studies over the years knows the name Koko.

He was the famous gorilla who learned sign language under his beloved teacher Penny Patterson (who hooked up with him in 1972).

He and the bonobo Kanzi were celebrities and ambassadors for ape understanding..

My condolences to Penny Patterson and her team. Koko lives on as one of the most famous apes ever.

Today is a special day from me. 45 years ago today, Friday July, 13th 1973, BATTLE opened in NYC. Going to see it at my local theater, the Walker, was overjoyed to find out that PLANET was the second feature. So got to see BATTLE for the first time and PLANET for a second time. A week later they did 'Go Ape for a Day' showing all five films. My 11 year old self was in heaven.

Have a great weekend everyone! Stay safe!

Thanks for the heads up Tim.

I was just going to post if anyone had heard of any new POTA comics that were coming as I had not heard of anything since the Ursus story. As much as some of the crossovers were not my cup of tea, at least the line seems profitable enough for new stories.

(Haven't read Ursus yet. Midway through Kong but at least I'm enjoying that one so far.)

I've found something to like in all of them except for the Green Lantern crossover.

I think you needed to be up to speed with the Green lantern universe.

Speaking of Boom!, it looks like Disney is a done deal.

POTA will now be Planet of the Mice.

You think it's funny? (he slaps him).

OK, so Disney definitely has the dough and marketing know how to promote Apes if they so choose.

But do they? POTA was a big property for Fox but Disney has a lot of fish to fry.

Hunter: Maybe they will do a separate Fox company and continue with Fox properties? (he slaps him).

Yeah, and maybe unicorns will come out of my ass!

Dario: There's a lot of money on the table. Disney won't ignore Apes. (he slaps him).

Oh, is Apes bigger than Marvel comics? Or Star Wars? Or Beauty and the Beast? Or…

James: Don't slap me! Disney knows they are in the firing line as a monopoly. They will let Fox live to show they are respectful of it's legacy. Fox will continue as a division of Disney and properties like Predator, Alien and Apes will survive. The franchises will benefit from Disney's fat wallet and we will get a much better merchandising program.

                          Will Apes lose it's badassness?

James: It's possible. Can't say Disney is open to being controversial/risky. But if they decide to let Fox continue to be it's own thing (no reflection on Disney to the general public) we could have the best of both worlds. Good Ape movies with the bucks and merchandising know how of Disney.

Sounds like you've been snorting Tinkerbell's fairy dust! (James slaps him).

A year before the "Go Ape!" marathon hit theaters in 1974, in the summer of 1973 during Battle's release Fox did a 'Go Ape for 2 Days' marathon. I remember going and spending the whole day at my local movie theater, the Walker. The place was packed and I got my 2nd and 3rd viewing of all the original films. It was a great day.

"Some apes, it seems, are more equal than others!" - - - Taylor in POTA

The future of "Apes" is uncertain while Disney decides what it's going to do.

Meanwhile, we can still get our talking animal fix courtesy of a familiar name: Andy Serkis!

His dark, faithful to the book adaptation of "The Jungle Book" (now called "Mowgli") was made for Warner Bros. but they decided it would be a tough sell because of it's tone and that other "Jungle Book" movie from, wait for it, Disney. So it was sold to Netflix and will stream instead of going into theaters (except for a limited run – Andy worked hard on a 3D theatrical version).

                          deadline.com/2018/07/netflix-mowgli-deal-andy-serkis-jungle-book-warner-bros-christian-bale-cate-blanchett-benedict-cumberbatch-1202434903/

Now Serkis' next movie as a director will be made specifically for Netflix. It's another classic talking animal story, "Animal Farm", and none other than his Apes director Matt Reeves is producing it (his company has a Netflix deal).

"Jungle Book", "Animal Farm", these are classic precursors to POTA and it's fun to see Andy at the helm. These might be precursors to Andy's own "Apes" movie.

It's a shame that interesting movies are forced to go "streaming" instead of getting a proper theatrical release but that's the future. The Disney/Fox merger has made the movie world a little smaller and so does streaming. But these days some of the best stuff is being made for the small screen.

                          Hello Humanoid Simians,

You already know me. I'm the webmaster of "Apecalypse Now" (online since 2005) and the author of the POTA timelines based on the "alterable time" concept (Cornelius, Zira and Caesar changed the past and thus created a new Planet of the Apes).

I also wrote a detailed TV series timeline and a Tim Burton universe timeline.

I moved all contents (I'm still doing this, it's a work in progress) on a brand-new website:

I also revised, refined and polished the contents.

Please visit the website, bookmark its URL and check it out from time to time. I will move ALL Apecalypse Now contents there, I just need some time. ;)

definitely no CGI apes. Anyone interested can contact me privately

I took the unrated director's cut of Conquest, restored Tom Scott's score, and also added Caesar's closing speech from the theatrical cut.  The audio level's are probably not perfect because it was done using laptop speakers. None the less here it is as a 3GB .mp4 file. Download it while you can since I'll probably take it down in a week or so.

Love to know what you think. Personally, I think they cut out too much of Tom Scott's score.

AFTER 50 YEARS, APES FANS STILL HAVE QUESTIONS
Ever wonder what became of those giant Scarecrows?
How about those oak trees Taylor saw at the top of that mesa?
Do you want to know what was shot and not used?
Want the dirt on shots planned but not filmed?

In LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! author John O'Callaghan answers these questions by sharing his life-long journey to find the exact filming locations for Franklin J. Schaffner's classic 1968 film, PLANET OF THE APES—including the recent discovery that several key sites in the badlands of Utah haven't been touched by Man (or Ape) since the crew finished shooting in 1967.

Incredible discoveries and previously unknown research about the work of filmmaker Franklin J. Schaffner provide clarity and humor to the history before, during and after the three-month shoot of PLANET OF THE APES.

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! features a wealth of more than 150 color photos. A must-have volume for every fan of PLANET OF THE APES or the history of film production.

New from Pithikos Entertainment: John O'Callghan's Location! Location! Location! The Lifelong Search to Find the Filming Locations of Franklin J. Schaffner's Classic 1968 Film Planet of the Apes. The book is scheduled to ship the first week of October 2018.

                          The press release:

AFTER 50 YEARS, APES FANS STILL HAVE QUESTIONS!

Ever wonder what became of those giant Scarecrows? How about those oak trees Taylor saw at the top of that mesa? Do you want to know what was shot and not used? Want the dirt on shots planned but not filmed?

In LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! author John OCallaghan answers these questions by sharing his life-long journey to find the exact filming locations for Franklin J.

206 Pages, 6x9 Trade Paperback, ISBN 978-1-64440-548-2
