.htmlOkay, since you haven't read it, this is going to be a little hard ---
so bear with me.
As you probably alread know, Fahrenheit tells of society where books
are burned. They causing to much controversy and contridiction, books
are banned by a government that wants control people, keeping them
fed and happy throught the throws of sensationalism given to them by
the state of art entertainment. A fireman, name Montag, burns books
and the owners' houses. But having taken books, and hiding them, he
is curious, asking questions in exactly why books should be burned
and how firemen, who used to put out fires, now start them. Upon
meeting a young star struck seventeen year old, he soon learns that
there is more to life and books have much to offer in the way of
thinking or feeding the mind. He befriend old professor who then
leads the way to help Montag in better comprehending the meaning of
words, phrases, of what the sould meaning of the book is trying to
convey. Much to Montag misfortune, he is discovered when reading a
poem out loud to his wife Millie and her friends. She turns the alarm
on him and before he knows it, is a fugitive.
In comparing the government's practice of buring books to control
people, I see the same thing in Conquest in regards to motivation is
which to control the masses. The government (Breck) has no doubt
taken away a lot of freedoms. However, like the government pacifies
the Fahrenheit people with entertainment, so does Breck who uses the
apes to keep the majority happy. Those who are not happy, are the
minority, that being the labor demonstrators. The peoples attitude in
Congquest are much like those in Fahrenheit. As long as they have
what they want there is no problem.
To me, Ceasar is much like Clarisse, the star struck -- into life
teenager. It is because of her that Montag concious is awaken. It
because of Ceasar that McDonald is shaken to realize the truth. Like
Clarisse, Ceasar is also young and unique. A motif of her being
compared to fall leaves symbolizes that she is of nature. Ceasar
being an ape, also symbolizes nature. Clarisse so hidden by her
society is much like Ceasar in the way of being a myth and well as
something that is unknown or hidden.
Montag having books and making moves to read and better understand
them is good comparision of MacDonald taking action in saving Ceasar.
Like Montage, he has taken a risk and becomes a fugitive, of sorts.
Like Montag, he has betrayed his society that for years had been
lying to him, making truths into myths.
There is much to think about when having read Fahrenheit 451. It is
books which I think most totalitarian world building in science
fiction is based. You might disagree that book burning has nothing to
with conquest as there is book store. But if you see the orangutan as
metophore, you might agree that the orangutan is symbol of the truth,
that what she or he pulls off the shelves are just lies; that books
are censored. The book's title being "The Young Queen's Fall" does
well to foreboad the events in which is about to occur in the story;
the fall of mankind. Censorship can be much a part of that fall of
humankind.
In the movie Conquest, the apes set the city on fire. Later, we learn
that the city is completely destroid by nuclear bomb. In Brandbury's
book, the city which Montag lived and escaped from, is also destroyed
by a war.
Micheal, go to. I add more later.

I've seen most of the missing pieces of Battle via, I believe, Hunter's
site. I'm on a Mac Powerbook so I don't seem to be able to view the Windows
formatted stuff on PotaDG. I did live in Asia for over five years, but I
never encountered the Japanese laserdisc version of Battle. For some
reason, even though the Japanese are nuts over POTA, no one seems to care
very much in Taiwan (Republic of China) where I lived.
What I think "the powers that be" really need to do is get off their butts
and release a special anniversary set of each of the last four films. I
don't know if J. Lee Thompson is still alive, but wouldn't it be great to
see the extended version of Battle on DVD with commentary by him and/or
Frank Capra Jr.? Wouldn't it be great to see a fully restored version,
complete with it's original ending (if it still exists) of Conquest? They
really need to do this before everyone involved with each production passes
away!

451 the city is destoryed, pulverized into dust. After the smoke and
dust settle, Monag and the other men begin their quest to teach a new
world about the books that the old one burned. -----
Micheal, you wouldn't believe this, but the fire alarm went off in
library. Damn, this is ironic. Here I am talking about burning books
and the alarm blares on. I, with the librarians and patrons, watched
as the fireman went inside. They didn't find anything but it sure was
scarey. Look, I have to go. One of these days, I have get my own
computer. I summerize tomorrow. Damn! Life is gettig real around
here.

Agreed! And that's why all of you need to WRITE IN and REQUEST THIS STUFF!!!!
I posted a "form letter" here awhile back which all of you are free to copy
and SEND IN. They're not going to know that people want this stuff if no one
requests it, so drop them a letter.

Agreed again. Unfortunately, J. Lee Thompson has passed away, but Frank Capra
Jr. is still alive, and I think commentary by him on ESCAPE, CONQUEST, and
BATTLE would be great to have.
As far as CONQUEST, from what I know, "most" of the original ending IS there
(it was to end at "...And that day is upon you now!" with the screen going to
black and Apes howling, grunting, etc. and THE END coming up on the screen. It
was only after they (the test audiences) cried about the films dark tone,
violence, etc. that they added the bullsh*t ending speech to it. And yes, it
would be great if they ever did release the film in it's original form, complete
with the original score intact as well. Having the complete score in there
alone makes for a better film.

As far as your question about the differences between the MEGO Cornelius and
Galen, there are no major ones. But, there are a few things that people look
at. Example, they say that Galen is on the "type 2" ("muscle body") and
Cornelius isn't, because by ' 75, when Galen was released, almost all MEGOs were on
type 2 bodys, but the initial run(s) WERE on the old style body. I mean I have
Urko, Ursus, and Burke all on the old style body so they weren't all just on
the type two body. I also have a Zauis on the "muscle body," so you can't
really go by the body type. Personally, and there are some that agree with me, I
think one version of Galen is the old style body with a dark brown collar,
rather than the maroon or purplish one (but, there are Galens out there with that
color collar too, so it's still a crap-shoot.) The most common way that people
acknowledge the differences between the two are to look at the ears. A lot of
people will say that Galen's only real variation is that his ears are tinged
green in color, whereas Cornelius doesn't have that. The green tinged ears
chimp on a type two body is the version most commonly called Galen. (It would have
been a lot better, and more accurate, if MEGO had just released a chimp with
a dark brown collar with NO hieroglyphics on it, but MEGO, in it's "recycle
everything and everything" mind set didn't do that...)

Well, as long as everyone's including the TV series, the cartoon series and
POTA 2001, I guess my extended list would look like this:
Planet
Beneath
Battle
TV Series
Conquest
Escape
Being burnt at the stake...
POTA 2001
I unfortunately can't include the cartoon series, Return to the POTA,
because I never actually got to see much of it! I am absolutely POTA
OBSESSED!, but to this day, I've never gotten much exposure to the cartoon
series or any of the various comic incarnations. Back in 1975, when the
cartoon series premiered, a fellow Apes fan and I both thought the cartoon
series was a real copout. We took one look at the mangled color scheme of
the ape's costumes and were even more turned off by the fact that gorillas
were driving around in jeeps and flying WWII era looking planes. What can I
say? I was a kid! Like another member of this group, I was born in 1967,
so I was only eight years old and I just wasn't going to let anybody fool
around with the POTA! Oh, I know that the apes in Boulle's novel are more
technologically advanced, but when I read the novel, I don't picture the
apes wearing the same outfits they did in the film. It's a whole different
world, after all!
I would like to see the cartoon series now though. I would also appreciate
it if one or several of you would take a crack at documenting each of the
comic books series in the order that they came out. I just remember that in
the early 90's, I was thrilled when I heard that a new POTA comic was coming
out. I asked the sales guy at my local comics shop if I could take the
first issue out of it's plastic bag and have a look. Just as I was afraid
of, the apes inside looked monstrous, with tree trunk-sized limbs and
fanged, gaping mouths. The art was even black and white! I was really
turned off and subsequently, never bought a single issue of the Adventure
comics of the 90's. I just thought then and still do, that POTA deserves
better.
However... from many of the comments I've read in the DG, I am intrigued by
some of what you guys say were some of the better issues and storylines.
Recommend something, if you like. I would go after anything that's out
there that's good, QUALITY Apes related stuff, but sadly, I think that being
the first real "space opera," as Charlton Heston put it, Apes got kind of a
raw deal on some of it's merchandising. Sure, there was a lot of stuff on
the market, but not all of it got the quality treatment that Star Wars later
got. Even the Mego apes, as endearing as they still are to me and millions
of others who had them as kids (and still own them now!), are really not all
that film accurate. POTA is just now starting to get it's due because of
companies like Medicom and Sideshow. In fact, Medicom's effort was the
first time that apes action figures were released that were actually film
accurate and it took over 30 years for THAT to happen!
I guess I'm just a POTA purist. I love the ape society that we so briefly
glimpse in Planet, Beneath, Battle and the TV series. One reason I really
love the series is because we get to see a much more expanded ape society
than we got to see in the films. The series, whether the actual stories
were good enough or not, featured new variations on costumes and showed a
great deal more of the ape world in the form of villages, prefectures,
hospitals and the like. I love the fact that Ape City is even given a name;
Central City. I just think that the series never had a chance to mature and
improve.
There are basically two kinds of series: the ones that start out with a bang
and slowly (or quickly) degenerate into repetitious rubbish like Twin Peaks,
and then there is the classic sci-fi formula that takes a season or two for
it to get the right established writers and producers onboard, like Star
Trek: The Next Generation. If you look at that show, you can see clearly
that it didn't really find it's legs until the third season. Imagine if
POTA: The series had been given that chance!

purchase his Ursus box. Let me tell you this guy knock

by MEGO in 1974.
If there were any criticisms to this piece of art is
it's actually too good. To compare I own an original

Hi David,
I'm sure Chris won't mind my answering this one for him.
Skipper's name was Maddox. The name can be seen quite
clearly on his uniform name tag in a widely distributed publicity

As far as I know this is the only place his name ever appears.

Thanks, Dave. Can this be seen in the film as well, or just in the

3) Beneath (a great science fiction film, and set on original world)

|
.html Okay, I'm back. Just wanted to finish by saying that both destruction
of cities are the same, that rebirth accurs out in the wilderness.
Here is an example:
(After the bomb hits the men are cooking bacon over a friendly fire.)
Granger looked into the fire. "Phoenix."
"What?" (Montag)
"There was a silly bird called the Phoenix back before Christ, every
few hundred years he built a pyre and burnt himself up. He must have
been first cousin to Man. But every time he burnt himself up he
sprang out of the ashes, he got himself reborn all over again. And it
looks like we are doing the same thing, over and over but we've got
one damn thing the Phoenix never had. We know the damn silly thing we
just did. We know of all damn silly things we've done for a thousand
years and as long as we know that and always have it around where we
can see it, some day we'll stop making the goddamn funeral pyres and
jumping in the middle of them. We pick up a few more people that
remember every generation.
In "Battle" Ceasar says something to the affect that human history
isn't ape history. Little does he know that apes are also that
Phoenix. In planet Marcius asks Zaius why things must stay still.
Zaius reply is, "I might have just saved the future". But Zaius is
the fire in which consumes the phoenix. That being the truth as welll
as is Zira and Cornelious. They, in taylor's ship rising up, carrying
it the truth that might stop the building of funeral pryers. As far a
the book people who carry the books in their heads in Fahrenheit,
Vigil and Macdonald are much like these book. They carry the
knowledge which is vital Caesar and his people, including the humans.
There is so much to campare that I probably can go on forever.
Although "Conquest" was made in the interest to show discrimantion,
what lies beneath is what Fahrenhiet suggest. It is secondary but it
also runs deep. Fahrenheit 451 also touches on discrimnation which in
part is reason why books are burned. Blaming discrimnation is the
Goverment's way of twisting things into its favor.
Beatty, Montag's Firechief is speaking,
"You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can't
have our minorities upset and stirred. Ask yourself, What do we want
in this country, above all? People want to be happy, isn't that
right? Haven't you heard it all your life? I want to be happy, people
say. Well, aren't they? Don't we keep them moving, don't we give them
fun? That's all we live for, isn't it? For pleasure , for
titillation. And you must admit our culture provides plenty of these.
"Yes" (Montag)
"Color people don't like LITTLE BLACK SAMBO. Burn it. White people
don't feel good about UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. Burn it. Someone's written a
book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are
weeping? Burn the book. Serenity, Montag. Peace, Montag. Take your
fight outside. Better yet, into the incinerator ---
Here a few last example touches on what POTA says also. The first one
is poem that Montag reads to his wife and her friends. In reading
this poem reminds me of Dave B. story about Zaius buring the bible.
In fact Dave might know this poem, called "Dover Beach". It was
written right after Darwin proclaimed that humand had evolved from
apes.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at full and round
shore
Lay like the folds of bright light girdle furled.
But now I only hear
It melancholy, long, and withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the bvast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
Ah, love, let us be true,
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like land of dreams.
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and
flight.
Where ignorant armies clash by night.
This is at the end of the books; Montag's last thoughts as he
remembers a verse from "Ecclesiastes"
And on either side of the river was there a tree of life, which bare
twelve manner of fruits, and yeilded her fruit every month; And the
leaves of the tree were the healing of nations. (Time to break down,
and a time to build up. Yes, a time to keep silence, and a time to
speak.) Caesar probably know this. It a hope that he can successed
in rebiulding a civilazation that will stop building goddamn funeral
pyres.

Ho Glen!
I did a Google search for Maddox and Beneath. I only came up with
one reference that was relevant. I found an online article by Dr.
John Flynn (who I just e-mailed to invite to the group, if he's not
here yet) that outlined Charles Eastman's 40-page abandoned script
for the first POTA film. In Eastman's treatment, he had a commander
Maddox who was to be the hero of the film. I wonder if the name
appearing on the Skipper's uniform was a leftover reference to this
character from the discarded storyline?

Interesting, Glen, that you rate Beneath as your favorite. It could
easily take my number two spot if I weren't so fond of Battle.
Reviewers seem to have been unkind to Beneath, citing that it lacks
cohesiveness. But fans really seem to like Beneath. I've written
before that I felt that Beneath owed much to H. G. Wells' Time
Machine, in which a future Earth is virtually destroyed, and humans
evolve into two separate species, or at least variants of one
species: one being dumb and innocent, the prey of the other species,
who occupy both the brutish soldier class and the brainy leader
class. The similarities between the two stories were even more
striking in H.G. Wells' grandson(?)'s recent film version.

this some years ago and it's a total custom creation. He made it
before it became known that some Apes came in actual boxes from Mego.
Some time ago, his computer crashed and i don't know if he has any of
the files left that he made these with.
Scott lent me his real Astronaut box that he got later on so I could
scan and restore it for reproing. The box was overall in nice shape,
although It had a large Toys R Us price tag on the top right on the
cliffside that had to be painte out (which was tough).
It's a lucky break to have those scans since the copied material I
got for Galen and General Urko was in such sad shape that if I
couldn't plug in elements from my Astronaut box scans it would've
been a lost cause. I basically just had to restore the figure
pictures and figure title.

I have always assumed that CONQUEST/BATTLE take place on the East
Coast and that Breck's city is the NYC that we will see in ruins in
the first two films - (to me) nothing else makes sense. As for the
Kolp issue, I don't believe this to be a gaffe at all - I can't
remember if it is stated explicitly or not, but I was operating under
the assumption that the Kolp in this story is not the one from BATTLE,
but that it is probably intended for him to be a descendant of him (we
don't know if he had any kids or not after all).

I don't really think that's fair either - the Adventure comics had
more than their fair share of good ideas, I just think most of them
were let down by the way they were carried out. To me, "Blood of the
Apes" is a perfect example - the advertising slogan for the series was
"Ape shall never kill ape - unless it's his job!"
To me this sums it up perfectly - a terrific concept and yet so
simple. But the final comic could have been considerably better.

I had a look at this today. Interesting fan-made piece. It's
basically a 'reimagining' of Tim Burtons' concept, replaced with
Star Wars imagery. It is almost as good as Burton's film, and likely
cost only a few dollars to make! :) It was worth downloading. I
liked the play on the Abraham Lincoln statue gag of Burton's.

FYI, I just got an e-mail from the author of this article, and he
thought we might be interested in a survey he did for his
forthcoming book.
John Flynn wrote:
"Perhaps you can mention to your group that Dr. Bob Blackwood and I
did a survey of Science Fiction fans from all around the world to
determine the top ten SF films of the 20th century, for a book we
were writing and is now with our agent. We received thousands of
write-ins...and ultimately boiled a list down to the top 50 and then
the top 10. Planet of the Apes finished in 6th place among some
pretty hefty competition. The top ten as selected by SF fans
was...2001, Blade Runner, Forbidden Planet, The Day the Earth Stood
Still, Alien, Apes, Terminator, Star Wars, The Matrix, and Aliens.
Pretty high praise for such a terrific film. We debuted our list at
last year's World Science Fiction convention in Toronto. John Flynn" <.html

Thanks Dave, and Hunter,
I hadn't checked that link out yet. Dr. Flynn describles the Eastman
screenplay as being about 40 pp., so I am assuming that you've got
the whole thing there. The story barely gets off the ground. But
there is a "Ulysses" (ref. to Boulle) and it would seem that
Eastman's commander Maddox character lived on at least in name on
the suit of Brent's Skipper. Interesting too that another major
character in Eastman's POTA whas a blind man in his 60s
(Petchnikoff). Perhaps only coincidence, but I wonder if Beneath
Skipper's blindness after the crash has an oblique connection to
that character as well?

Ron -- I read your post at about 8.00am this morning and, for some
reason, it stuck with me all day.
The phrase "dogs tend to get shot around here" freaked me out
because I'm a dog lover but in the UK we have no guns.
Are things ok? Also please tell me where you live so I can get a
sense of perspective. I figure that the fact you posted this on the

I totally bow down before you for saying BATTLE is your No. 2.
The film was ruined by s**t production values, but Thompson, Dehn
and the Corringtons' intentions were quite ambitious - and the
dialogue was wonderful!
Sorry if I'm repeating myself, but please read Brian Pendreigh's
book "LEGEND" for what we might have seen if APES budgets had
accrued over time in the way that BOND budgets did.

I know back in the 90's, Adventure Comics did Graphic Novel reprints of
Marvel's adaptations of PLANET, BENEATH, and ESCAPE, but I remember
someone mentioning that they also did one called Monkey Planet as well. I
know it wasn't an adaptation of Boulle's novel, so what was contained in
it? Did they do any others?

OK - so I may be a bit foggy about this (I am about most things -
check the homepage of the TV series for verification) - but I
remember Brian (a noted and eloquent Scottish journalist who, in my
opinion, write a better book about APES than REVISITED) - telling us
about Paul Dehn's original and EXPANSIVE ideas for CONQUEST and
BATTLE.
Great, epic stories.
I would carry on -- but I have a feeling Whitty is taking the piss.

The best possibility to do this is to make a art design that has a

.htmlApes were released in both boxes and cards. Although there are only 4
character boxes that collectors know of (Astronaut, Galen, General
Urko and General Ursus).
On the side there are cameos for other figures that have (so far)
never been found in a box, only cards. These include Dr. Zauis, Zira
and the Soldier Ape. I first thought that the boxes were done first
and then they went to cards (which are cheaper). But it's beginning
to look more like the movie wave was initially on cards and the TV
wave is when they started to do limited boxes.
People report they have found Burke and Virden packaged in the
generic Astronaut box and Urko, Ursus and Galen are all from the TV
wave (although Ursus was not in the show).
Galen is just a renamed Cornilius figure. Most examples of Cornilius
are on the older style bodies (with metal hinge joints on the wrists)
and have brown ears.
Most examples of Galen have the revised body (with the plastic ball
joint on the wrist) and green painted ears.
But my carded Cornilius has all the marks of a Galen so I'm sure some
that would be recognized as Cornilius have been packed as Galen.
The head and the outfit are the same on both figures (except for some
rare and valueble outfit variations of early Cornilius in which his
suit was brown instead of green. The same happened for Zira).
A boxed POTA figure is much MUCH more valueble than a carded one
since Mego made very few compared to the carded ones.

Astronaut in about ' 89 or there-abouts (And I am sure that die-hard Mego
collectors knew of any and all boxed figures well before that...) Are you saying

generally known. This is when the internet was younger and what one
super collecter knew was not immediataly known by all others (even if
they were interested collectors).
I have several books about action figures that have Mego POTA
sections, whenever they show packages, they only show cards.
I'm sure some knew about the boxes (especially those that bought them
way back when). But until the internet matured, the info remained
with a limted number of people.
Anyway, Scott made those boxes and others for people on the list.

Actually, there are/were 4 of the Astro-Apes made: Dr. Zorma, an Orangutan
with glasses, Mira: the female Chimp with the flower in her hair, Artemus: a
male Chimp, and the Warrior Ape: An ape who I'd guess is supposed to be a Gorilla
due to his name, but his large ears give him the appearance of a Chimpanzee.
This ape is wearing a helmet that looks something like out of the Roman
Empire...

.htmlIt is, but this is a very well kept example and these are rare.
I stiil have the card for one of these - they came in bags with a cars
sealing the top. They are Astro Apes, of which there were 4.
My mom bought these for me when my Megos snapped!

thanks for explanation; not sure if we have legal paper here, but i will look.
please remind us of next calendar page; i look forward to it.
also, i noticed linda harrison's bday on there.
at risk of inciting a testosterone outbreak, i will say that if she is the age that we beleive her to be, then she might be the best looking woman of her age.
because when i met her about three years ago: she looked GOOD.

Do yourself a favor and buy Legend of the POTA and/or POTA Revisited. They
are books that are actually ABOUT the POTA, and not someones "interpretations"
of metaphors, etc., some of which are very, very far fetched ideas... (Ex. :
The revolt in CONQUEST "is" the Watts riots... I don't think so... The action
seen in the Apes revolt is based on the footage of what occured in the 65 riots.
And let's not forget that the subway station in the episode "The Trap" is
actually a metaphor for the Underground Railroad... And nope, that school bus
seen in BATTLE isn't just an existing, running piece of equipment that the
Mutants were able to salvage and use when they attacked Ape City, it's a great
metaphor for school integration... )
That's not to knock Greene's "college thesis" book, but if you want to learn
more about the making of the films, buy the two books mentioned above... If
you just want to read what someone thinks is there and thinks you should read
into too, then you'd be satisfied with Greene's book....
