OK, fine.
I've met Terry and he's a truly nice man but he's more interested in obtuse
angles on the classics.
It would take a seriously good producer to convince him to commit to
something that he hadn't "originated" - at least in a modern form.
But I DO agree that -- maybe -- he's one of the few clever minds around that
could possibly give us (and I mean US) what we want. Intelligently.
But I don't really understand Fandom's preoccupation with Gilliam as far as
APES is concerned. Yes, he's true to his own word (which I think is what
people are thinking about) - but Terry is overall a visualist (yes - and a
visualist with a bit more than Burton).
Personally, I think that (F)andom should be spending more time thinking
about who could effectively write a script that is politically and
intellectually close to Rod Serling and Michael Wilson's work in 1967.
A clever script sets A PRECEDENT. Then we get the director. Then MAKE THE
PICTURE.
The problem with APES -- and ever achieving its like again -- is that its
origins were in absolute quality on so many levels. That is not going to
happen again until someone with power and taste takes it on as their
lifetime ambition - just like Arthur Jacobs did.
Perhaps what we really want left us just as the 70s left us. Now there's a
discussion for the DG...

Remember, we're talking about Brent's ship here, not Taylor's... There is
nothing in BENEATH that indicates what Brent's ships size is internally... He is
never shown in it, only crawling out of it. So to say that the
internal/external dimensions don't match isn't true.
As far as Taylor's ship goes, his is as large as it's interior would
indicate... You have to remember that only the nose is shown sticking up out of the
Dead Lake, and that there is supposed to be much more to it than what's shown.

However, if you look at the size of the astronauts OUTSIDE the ship
then compare this to the INSIDE, the proportions are wrong.
No big deal, just another little "flub".
Neil, you need to give the lenghty explanaton here buddy!

Uuuhhhhh.... I'm in the process of reading Flynn's article because I
followed the link above. The only problem is that so far, it is a carbon
copy of Russo, Landsman and Gross' POTA Revisited....
Here's an excerpt from Flynn's article:
THE ORIGINAL NOVEL MONKEY PLANET
La planete des singes, a witty, philosophical tale belonging properly
with Karel Capek and other social satirists of the day, was first published
in 1963. The idea of a world where apes had evolved into an intelligent
society and where human were hunted or enslaved was hardly a new one. Both
Swift and Huxley had imagined similar worlds, but Boulle's ironic yet
compassionate message, pinpointing many of the problems he saw in his world,
struck a raw nerve.
Here's an excerpt from Revisted:
MONKEY PLANET
La planete des Singes, a witty, philosophical tale that fits in nicely with
Karel Capek and other social satirists of the day, was first published in
1963. The idea of a world where apes had evolved into an intelligent
society and where humans were hunted or enslaved was hardly a new one, but
Boulle's ironic yet compassionate message, pinpointing many of the problems

I immediately noticed a striking similarity because I just got finished
re-reading POTA Revisted. Is there anybody out there who can explain this

A lengthy explanation isn't needed. Its just that I was planning on
drawing some interior and exterior scenes of the ship and after
working out the scale based on the astronauts on the nose cone etc

slightly too big compared to the outside proportions. Or if not too
big, the 'skin' of the ship would have to be way too thin to be
practical.

evolve into two separate species, or at least variants of one

Indeed, the parallels are striking. First, both stories begin with
time travel. Both involve discovery of an 'upsidedown world' where
evolution has gone awry. both stories feature two primary societies:
one that has survived aboveground after a worldwide devastation took
place, and another below ground that possesses greater intellectual
powers than those above.
The above-dwelling Eloi in Time Machine are docile, simple people,
and are hunted by the underdwelling Morlocks. This is where the two
stories differ, since the Morlocks are at once violent hunters of
the Eloi above, and the brainy ruling class. However, there are
different kinds of Morlocks, reminding me of the different castes
represented in Ape City. The hunter Morlocks correspond neatly to
the Gorilla Army, while the ruling Morlocks with the highly evolved
large brains could correspond both to the Orangutan elders and the
Mutants.
Both the Eloi and the Morlocks were once the same human species, but
have evolved separately for thousands of years. In Time Machine, the
hero, like Brent, must descend into the underground city and finds a
way to destroy the Morlock hive.
Dave B. has pointed out too that in the new Time Machine, the hunt
scene seems to owe much to the hunt scene from PA68. Could it be
that Time Machine influenced Beneath, and PA68 turned around to
influence the new Time Machine? Interesting.

We're not the only ones. Some time back (no longer in the current
archives), I think I copied in a whole movie review of the Time
Machine from when it was released. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star
hated the film, but his review was quite entertaining, and made
several references to how bad the film was, because it reminded him
so much of Beneath the Planet of the Apes. I couldn't find the
article on the net anymore, but my search did come up with one quote
from Howell's article:
"a very bad remake of Planet of the Apes. No, it's worse than that.
It's Beneath the Planet of the Apes!"
Well, there's no accounting for taste, but it does show that even a

He sounds like what Planet's main character Taylor is. Levain could have

Hi Cougar. Good observation. Yet another example of how, in the
moviemaking process, characters can be blended into one as they
simplify plot, or switch from one writer to another. PA68 had quite
a succession of fingers in the pot.
As you know, elements of Boulle's novel got recylced later to become
aspects of the plot for Escape, e.g. Mérou's celebrity in the ape
city is lifted to become Cornelius and Zera's moments of fame in
human society.

.htmlRon and Alan,
Your comments on Jonesy's demise spark a thread in my thoughts which I will place down here for the group's feedback.
Firstly I will accept that Jones was dead (the posted version of the script makes that quiet clear), but for the sake of discussion let us assume that he was not dead but in fact still under the effects of a cryogenic
slowdown.
When did this cryogenic slowdown occur you ask? Well (again just for the sake of discussion, not rewriting the history) let us assume that Jones did not black out when Virdon and Burke did as he had to set the automatic
homing beacon. For various reasons (lack of rations, oxygen) he decided to administer the other two with the needle in a similar fashion to Taylor in the first film - the dose would be calculated for prior to their
return. Due to the time shift he miscalculates and Virdon and Burke only start to revive during the actual crash, first their life signs speed up whilst still in the ship and they finally wake up in the shelter
(Burke's movements upon revival were similar to Taylor, Landon and Dodge when they awoke from deep sleep).
After setting the controls and ensuring that they are on track Jones gives himself his own needle (ala Taylor) unfortunately his dose being similar in strength to the others means that he will revive later. So when
Farrow and the apes examine him they do not detect his barely present life signs.
Let us finally speculate that Jones came too before he was actually buried (we never saw a fresh mound of earth to indicate a grave). So if he is alive and not buried as we thought what happened? I will throw my own
little musings down in a later post.
Patrick
P.S. My meanderings are not meant as gospel and are not meant to counter any beliefs which any fellow readers may hold dear as an unshakeable truth.

That's what Veska was lead to believe and that's what they want you to
think - but it's actually an elaborate conspiracy, and Jones is alive
and well and... well, his story is one for another time.

I don't know about that, but it's an idea that occurred to me because
as far as I could remember the only actual examination we see is a
barely-educated human putting his hand briefly on Jones' chest. I'm no
doctor, but I'd be willing to bet that isn't a definitive test of
whether or not someone's alive.
Other than a throwaway comment I'd not given it any thought, but I
like your theory. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a piece of fan
fiction out there somewhere dealing with this, but I've not read any
so far.

Ah Patrick, this is the stuff of sequels! We could have a whole new
adventure here, with Jones picking up on the trail of Virdon and
Burke, but ending up in quite different scenarios. Great stuff. It
would make for a good tv movie sequel to the series. Wishful
thinking, I suppose.

While your "new plot" (although not "gospel" by your admission, and I too
follow the belief that he IS dead as seen in the episode,) is an interesting
enough idea, I cannot see that Jones would have made it very far if he was
alive...
Had he not been buried alive by the Gorillas, had he came to, I'm sure that
had he would have been "tried" as Burke and Virdon were, found "guilty, and
killed...
And had he revived and not been tried by the High Counci, I could see where
the Gorillas would have told Veska about him... And seeing how crazed Veska was
in warning the villagers about how "insane" Burke/Virdon were, Veska would
have taken it upon himself to have Jones killed without trial...

deaths in the series. Apparently, the survival rate of ANSA craft is
not that great, and that of the NASA (Venturer, Cassiopeia) seems to
be far higher (1:7 NASA as opposed to the ANSA rate of 4:12).
The (official) list of dead astronauts is as follows:
Stewart (POTA) - hibernation chamber failure
Skipper (BTPOTA) - crash related injuries
Milo (EFTPOTA) - killed by gorilla at zoo (but survived the landing!)
Jones (POTA TV) - crash related injuries (broken neck apparently)
Matinez- (POTA Fox PC game) - hibernation chamber failure
Overall, that's five dead astronauts out of 19 total that we know
about (canon based). That's about a 25% mortality rate, which isn't a
very good record for any space agency.
I agree that the dead astronaut plot device is a bit overused in the
series, the only exception to the rule seems to be the animated TV
series and the remake. <.html

advanced than Taylor's (being somewhat of a sport coupe model, if you
will) that it also had suitably advanced data recording technology
aboard (there were laser discs in 1980, in real life so that much was
at least plausible).
I would think that the ship would write its information to the most
compact, most advanced storage system possible. Was this a flight
recorder? Yes, that much is said in the TV series, I believe.
I also believe that this was an intended, though unused plot device
that would have become more important as time went past. <.html

.html The plot device of an astronaut lost in the future and searching for
his home, even though it was destroyed, was touched upon in the Buck
Rogers in the 25th Century movie (with Gil Gerrad). Buck went back to
the ruins of Chicago and even found a family grave, where his entire
family had been buried, no date, the lucky ones had been buried, the
rest...
This would have been a powerful episode to explore, and would offer
not only closure, but could also offer an incentive to get back to the
past.
Of course, what you may not remember is that the apocalypse occurred
at a different date in the TV series than in the movies. In the
movies, the nuclear war happened sometime late in the 20th century.
In the TV series, Virdon and Burke find an old copy of the Encylopedia
Britannica that shows a picture of New York City in the year 2503, or
523 years after they left Earth, so the apocalypse hadn't happened at
least until 2503 and probably later.
If we go by this information, then Virdon's family was not killed in a
nuclear war, they simply died of old age waiting on him and his home
would no longer be where it was because progress and time would have
replaced it long ago. <.html

"POTA Revisited" was already in the bag in the late '80's. It was excerpted

RIGHT ON!!!! That's exactly what I say, and I believe the original timeline
(from which Cornelius and Zira came) also happened in the 2500's, because if
you recall in ESCAPE, they mention 500 years of slavery... "500" years from
"now" would be the 2500's...

That's why I "laughed" when you said that Greene's text commentary was
supposedly the best "extra" on the new 35th Anniversary DVD... I mean you got
experts out there like Russo, and yes, Monteith, and here's this guy who had

Your point is taken, but since Russo didn't do a commentary, I think Greene's is the best on the DVD. Some might say Goldsmith but I think Greene's has more interesting stuff.
And it's the one with the fewest empty spaces. It's got a lot of stuff dealing with the movie, it isn't all allegory.
As for "Behind", I think the actual POTA people and the narration covered what Russo would have. Greene adds another layer to the discussion. But it's true, Russo felt ripped off by not being asked to
participate. And he feels his book being released at the same time as POTA2001 hurt his sales. It's amazing with all the entertainment topics under the sun that get books written about them, that no publisher in the
'90's thought "POTA Revisited" was worth while. It only barely got published because of POTA2001. - - - Jeff

Well, I'll agree with you on one point, at least not "all" of Greene's text
was the same metaphor/allegory/read into it stuff as his book is... Truthfully,
I was a bit surprised at that, and actually I was glad to see that it wasn't.
I do prefer the Goldsmith stuff more, and even the lengthier stuff lifted
from the BEHIND interviews. I will also agree with you that it was rather stupid
on FOX's part to have reused the BEHIND stuff for the Anniversary DVD... New
stuff by people like Lou Wagner and Buck Kartalian would have been much more
welcomed. And though they were in the documentary, new commentaries by people
like Mort Abrahams (and maybe even Linda) would have been great... Not just new
commentaries, but their comments as they actually watched the film, "that's"
what they should have done... It should have been one commentary track of
Abrahams alone, and then a track of mixed comments by Buck who was in the first
part of the film, and Lou who was in the last part, with comments by Linda
interspersed between... I don't quite get why they'd have Natalie's comments in
PLANET... Sure she is Arthur's widow, and she mentioned what he did to get PLANET
made, but they could have just as easily used Heston's & McDowall's comments
from their BEHIND interviews to cover the same ground... If they do the other
films as "Special Editions" I would like to see FOX get Natalie's new
commentaries for all of the sequels though...

Well, that's an opinion I guess... Personally I think that having someone
like Russo to add their comments would have been better... I think his
perspective could have "filled in the gaps" of what the actual POTA people and narration
missed. But, I suppose that's where we'll never agree... I can see what
you're saying, but Greene, even in the BEHIND documentary, is way out of tune for
my tastes...
And as far as REVISITED being released at the same time of pota2001, there's
no doubt that that hurt sales of it... I remember having read the excerpt of
it, and then going to the book store to try ordering it with no luck. The weird
thing is, it was in the store's database back then, and the dealer said it
was on backorder... REVISITED deserved better treatment than what it received,
and it sure as he** deserved to be published on it's own merit, not as just
some attempt by a publisher to "cash in" on something that it really had nothing
to do with (that of course being pota2001...)

possible the writers of the cartoon got Supreme Council from the
novelizations, which would be more readily available to them than the series
at that point. Don't know where Effinger got "Supreme Council". Eric Greene
talked to him and he said he wrote all 4 novelizations during a hospital
stay. Not the best place to fact check. I assume he had the scripts for

Yeah, I agree with you here... Off the top of my head, I can't think of any
time in any episode where they are referred to as anything but "The High
Council"...
Now, as to questions regarding titles: I have gone blank here, but I can't
think of any one time in any episode of Planet of the Apes where Urko is
actually referred to as "General"... I know in Return they call him by that title,
but I cannot think of one instance in the live series where he's called

Urko? Or is his "General' title something put on him by mistake, the same way

I can believe that, and I think I have heard that too (maybe it was from you
in reference to what Greene told you...) Anyway, while I can believe he wrote
them while hospitalized, I often wonder why book number 4, "Lord of the Apes"
was published so much later than the others (1976 I think it was...) Did
Greene get any info on that, or is it just that the book was published as a last

.htmlThere's no two ways about it. Most people did not like POTA2001, therefore
they were not interested in the comic. The point of a licensed comic is to
bring in fans of a movie who might not otherwise buy a comic. In the case of
"Star Wars" or "Alien", obviously there's enough fans to support it (though
I would question the quality of the recent movies in those franchises too).
POTA2001 "stuff" failed across the board and Fox earned every failure.
Someone might publish classic Apes comics again someday, but there will
never be a POTA2001 comic published. That's probably Fox's big concern with
a sequel. It made enough to justify a sequel, but how to get the "stuff"
companies on board? - - - Jeff

I just rewatched PLANET with the Goldsmith commentary going, and after
rewatching it, I can see where both of you were disappointed in it... You are right,
it is very short in length for a supposed "full length commentary"... It's
not what it should have been, his commenting on each piece of music, although at
he he does do some specifics, like telling how they called the one piece
PLANET's "love theme"...
But, to whichever of you commented that it seemed like his commentary was
just lifted from previous comments made, that I can't agree with... After all, in
there at one point he refers to the 35th Anniversary, so it probably was
recorded for the anniversary DVD... Hopefully they will do better next time if he
does a commentary track for ESCAPE...

I've been wanting to narrow this one down as well. As I listen to
the series, I have been listening for this one. Most often, he is
referred to just as Urko (pronounced /oorko/ often). In the first
episode, Urko is called the chief of security. I have never really
questioned the General title, and it is so common elsewhere (Gen.
Ursus, Gen. Aldo, Gen. Urko [Return]). I'm listening to "The Trap"
at the moment on the computer, and even Urko's gorillas are
referring to him by name and not by title so far.

One thing they could've done was film Goldsmith performing POTA music live, like he does in his concerts. Maybe have a thing where you can a smaller screen and watch him conducting it as
it plays with the movie. They did something like that with "E.T." John Williams conducted the score live for the 20th anniversary premiere and you can listen to that version while you're watching the DVD.

Those references are all true, but in their cases, it's because they are
Generals of their Army... Urko is something else altogether though... He is the
Chief of Security, but there's no mention of his being in the military in the
series... I guess why it bugs me that he's referred to as "General" is because
on the TOPPS cards they call him that, on the POWER tv series stories they call
him that, and I think in the novels they call him that, when he isn't called
that, nor is he one, on the tv series...

available on Hunter's site) says the picture is the recognizable NYC
skyline and no date is mentioned.
In addition, the ruins of San Francisco in 'The Trap' are clearly
from the 20th Century not the 26th.
My interpetation is that the writers were unsure about the
backstory. Menluth mentioned the series bible. It would be great to
get a look at it to see what direction the writers were given.

it when they specifically comment on what's on screen. Some people are

I've heard so far. I've heard critics recommend his films they don't like

the director was doing the commentary and Tom Cruise literally phoned in,

The reviewer is Jeff Bond, who's done the notes on many an Ape soundtrack. It starts off by saying that the new DVD "rankled consumers on several levels, with some annoyed that they had to repurchase the film
after having gobbled up the boxed set of all the "Apes" films released a few years ago, and others whining that Jerry Goldsmith's commentary wasn't detailed or long enough. Well, we beg to differ.
First of all, the anamorphic transfer, text commentary by "Apes" book author Eric Greene and the behind-the-scenes footage shot by Roddy McDowall are themselves worth the price of admission." Goes on to
say that Goldsmith's commentary has some good comments and the article provides 4 pages of commentary on it. At 20:00 - - "That's right, Goldsmith essentially says nothing during the first 20 minutes of his
commentary! That's probably the main reason why this track has been attacked as "sparse", but the fact is, Goldsmith is watching POTA for the first time in a few decades and he seems to get quite involved
in just watching the movie". Blah, blah, blah. It's an incredibly detailed article that I haven't even read yet, but I thought I'd mention it. There's also an article about the score for another
sci-fi classic, "Forbidden Planet", and an interview with the guy whose "Troy" score got canned, even though many think his score is better than the name composer they replaced him with (James
"Titanic" Horner). More info on the issue at: https://secure.filmscoremonthly.com/store/detailIssue.asp

BTW Any speculation on what ANSA stood for? We've already had a few
ideas thrown around here in the past.

.htmlGood point Cougar, re MENTIONING the 35th Anniversary.
I was actually just ASKING if anyone had an answer as to whether it was
lifted from another source.
This answers my question and makes me feel a little happier.
I am actually concerned about his health - as we know he has recently
cancelled some shows. That could also explaing his small input. It
explains why Heston only signed one of the 500 Autograph Cards Rittenhouse
sent him!!!
I sure hope Fox has the foresight to get what they can out of him for an
"Escape" commentary. Maybe they should show him the film and let him take
notes, then show it AGAIN with the microphone on! ;)

I don't think anyone's ever said Goldsmith's commentary was lifted. The
other commentary with McDowall, Hunter, etc. is. It's a fact Goldsmith's
commentary is new, it's just meager, like Cornelius' evidence. - - - Jeff

To Whitty and Krueger,
I just rewatched PLANET with the Goldsmith commentary going, and after
rewatching it, I can see where both of you were disappointed in it... You
are right, it is very short in length for a supposed "full length
commentary"... It's not what it should have been, his commenting on each
piece of music, although at he he does do some specifics, like telling how
they called the one piece PLANET's "love theme"...
But, to whichever of you commented that it seemed like his commentary was
just lifted from previous comments made, that I can't agree with... After
all, in there at one point he refers to the 35th Anniversary, so it
probably was recorded for the anniversary DVD... Hopefully they will do
better next
time if he does a commentary track for ESCAPE...

It would be awesome if we could get boxes made before
I ship out the Gideon figures. MEGO Mike may be the
way to go. Neil's artwork wouldn't be ready unless you
liked black and white, but I do have some Palitoy
artwork that we could use in it's place, or we just
use the MEGO style box. It's worth a try.

I still like my idea of having one track of full length commentary by Mort
Abrahams, and then another track of mixed comments by Buck Kartalian, Lou
Wagner, and Linda Harrison... If course they didn't go that way, so my opinion here
is pointless...

Yes, but that's what I don't like... The manufacturers of the products didn't
bother to double check these things, so then because of the marketing side of
things, people will continue to call them by their incorrect title... Even
nowdays, the people at Medicom got it wrong...

Thats what I was saying too... Although, I believe you can get by with just
one person doing a full length commentary, as long as they're commenting on the
screen itself...
I just bought the Land Of The Lost Season one DVD set and it has commentary
on it, and a lot of the commentary is just one person commenting on one full
length episode, and it works...

That's simply because they were just using a generic backlot to save money...
The point of that set was just to have some "bombed out" city remains to set
the action in... Yes, I think they could have, and probably should have,
painted up some matt pictures to be a little more of the look of let's say
something more futuristic, but their matt pictures were painted to match the backlots
they were going to use... They didn't have the set money to construct
elaborate ruins, so they used what they had... And as far as your saying that the
ruins are meant to depict the 20th Century, then explain the posters that they
see in the subway... Those items they're advertising are meant to be futuristic,
and after the time of Burke and Virdon... Same with the machine in "The
Legacy", it's something that even Virdon himself says is "way after our time"...
The only thing that might throw it off would be the zoo poster, which depicts
not a servant ape, but one behind bars to be looked at...The only thing I could
guess about that would be that it's supposed to show people what apes were
before they brought them into their homes as slaves. Like treating zoo apes as a
novelty item for people, like "Come to the zoo and see this non-domesticated
ape"...
