I remember Rory also liked Roman Polanski's stuff, especially "The Fearless Vampire Killers".

Wasn't Rory also a huge fan of the original King Kong? I haven't watched that for a long time whereas Planet I have recently and don't really feel like doing so again at the moment. I could always read the Boulle novel again, I think I have a copy or two lying around here somewhere...

CNN has a 4 part documentary on for the 50th anniversary of 1968. In part one they acknowledge some of the movies, including POTA. Rick Perlstein (author of "Nixonland") sez, "This was a hit. It captured something deep in the psyche of America".

This series, produced by our dear Tom Hanks, is worth a watch for a deep dive into the year POTA was released. If you missed it it'll repeat forever.

In another cautionary tale for the Twitter age, TV star Rosanne tweeted that, let's just say, someone is a POTA love child. The remark was condemned as racist and now ABC has cancelled the #1 show in America, the reboot of her hit show from 20 years ago.

Fun fact: her TV husband John Goodman played John Chambers in "Argo".

James Cameron produced and is on camera for AMC's "History of Science Fiction".

For sci-fi fans it's a great look at various sci-fi subjects (aliens, robots, etc.).

There are 6 episodes total. The episode "Dark Futures" does right by POTA and is worth a watch.

But I say the whole series is worth a watch if you get AMC on your cable provider.

The future home of Fox's assets (including POTA) just got trickier. Comcast (home of Universal Pictures) has put in a bid of $65 billion (all cash) for the company despite the Fox powers that be agreeing to a $52.4 billion (all stock) sale to Disney.

Fox will discuss the Comcast offer Wednesday at a scheduled meeting.

I think in the end Disney will get the goods because, well, Disney always wins (except with "Solo" – yikes!).

But a Comcast victory might be a good thing in the POTA department. Disney has successful franchises coming out of their Mickey Mouse ears (Marvel, Star Wars, etc.) and there's a chance POTA could get neglected.

Comcast could use more franchises. Their Universal has been pretty successful (incl. the new Jurassic World 2, already at $400 million worldwide) but there's plenty of room to continue Apes.

Dylan Clark, producer of the recent Apes movies, actually has a deal at Universal, producing movies for them like a new Battlestar Galactica and a new Scarface.

Chernin Entertainment, the Apes production company, has experience producing the big Tom Cruise sci-fi epic "Oblivion" at Universal. It wasn't a hit but a foot in the door.

So if Comcast got the rights the new POTA could pick up where they left off pronto.

How POTA would fit in the Disney image is less clear.

As a home theater buff, I actually hope Disney LOSES due to the way they seem to use the Atmos 3D audio standard for immersive UHD and BluRay releases.

I'll explain: most 2017 and earlier consumer A/V receivers and pre/pros from the initial rollout of Atmos in 2014/2015 can handle 7 floor speakers (front left/center/right, left/right side surrounds, left right rear surrounds) and 4 height speakers (left/right top front and top rear most typically), as well as a subwoofer LFE channel. In A/V speak, we call that 7.1.4.

However, a few new consumer A/V processors can use more speakers: front wide speakers (between the front mains and side surrounds), top middles between the front, etc. Atmos is capable of up to 24 floor speakers and 10 height speakers (+LFE), with the extra speakers creating a greater sense of realism by rendering to the available number of speakers you have ("object passthrough"). I have a hi-end processor from Trinnov Audio in my home theater that has 13 floor speakers and 6 height speakers. Not so nuts, but pricey, to do this, yet it works well on the 200 or so Atmos releases that make fuller use of the standards.

Why does this matter? Well, most UHD and BDs are scalable like this, so you could buy a copy of Gravity or The Matrix and the more speakers your processor can handle with Atmos, the better your room might sound. But…Disney seems to be pre-rendering (printing) most of their releases to a fixed 7.1.4 .

So, if Disney get Fox, we might have a relatively neutered version of Apes coming out as far as Atmos goes.

Pure and simple, Disney is evil.

From how they manipulate copyright laws to how they corner markets. I'm surprised they have not been put under greater scrutiny for monopoly laws so far.

Hope Comcast wins out as I believe there is a better chance for POTA development with them.

Anyone who has been following ape intelligence studies over the years knows the name Koko.

He was the famous gorilla who learned sign language under his beloved teacher Penny Patterson (who hooked up with him in 1972).

He and the bonobo Kanzi were celebrities and ambassadors for ape understanding.

My condolences to Penny Patterson and her team. Koko lives on as one of the most famous apes ever.

At least the Fox MARVEL properties will be able to be incorporated into the MCU, along with Spidey. As long as they don't "disneyfy" POTA in any subsequent film -- or TV?-- projects, I'll be content.

Gotta wonder what plans they're cooking up to follow the Caesar-centered RISE-DAWN-WAR trilogy. The only real loose-end I can think of involves the fate of the 'lost' ICARUS ship in RISE.

Regardless, I'm still of the opinion that we've seen a POTA concept reboot, and not an actual prequel to the '68 POTA classic. They avoided going all-out Global Thermonuclear war, which completely divorces it from the original film and its classic sequels.

Hmm... Did anybody here ever see the "Star Wars Filibuster" bit that Patton Oswalt did for PARKS & RECREATION? He imagined a huuuge crossover of STAR WARS with the other Disney-owned properties, including the MARVEL stuff. Imagine him adding PLANET OF THE APES into that mix . . . Wow!

Meanwhile, we can still get our talking animal fix courtesy of a familiar name: Andy Serkis!

His dark, faithful to the book adaptation of "The Jungle Book" (now called "Mowgli") was made for Warner Bros. but they decided it would be a tough sell because of it's tone and that other "Jungle Book" movie from, wait for it, Disney. So it was sold to Netflix and will stream instead of going into theaters (except for a limited run – Andy worked hard on a 3D theatrical version).

      deadline.com/2018/07/netflix-mowgli-deal-andy-serkis-jungle-book-warner-bros-christian-bale-cate-blanchett-benedict-cumberbatch-1202434903/

Now Serkis' next movie as a director will be made specifically for Netflix. It's another classic talking animal story, "Animal Farm", and none other than his Apes director Matt Reeves is producing it (his company has a Netflix deal).

"Jungle Book", "Animal Farm", these are classic precursors to POTA and it's fun to see Andy at the helm. These might be precursors to Andy's own "Apes" movie.

It's a shame that interesting movies are forced to go "streaming" instead of getting a proper theatrical release but that's the future. The Disney/Fox merger has made the movie world a little smaller and so does streaming. But these days some of the best stuff is being made for the small screen.

You already know me. I'm the webmaster of "Apecalypse Now" (online since 2005) and the author of the POTA timelines based on the "alterable time" concept (Cornelius, Zira and Caesar changed the past and thus created a new Planet of the Apes).

Back in the 90's I taped Roddy McDowell's intros to the Sci Fi Channel's "Planet of the Apes" Week. At the time it seemed like they would wind up being rare. BUT nothing is rare these days when anything you want is an ebay away and whatever you thought was so unique is probably on youtube. Well, that's also a good thing.

      Happy Apetober!

Despite the uncertainty with the Disney/Fox merger, I'm getting good vibes that we may see more Apes movies. Disney honcho Bob Iger has said they want to keep the 20th Century Fox brand intact. And now it looks like Fox's Emma Watts will continue running the show at Fox (which will now be a division of Disney instead of it's own company).

Watts was a big Apes booster at Fox. It's still up to the Disney brain trust whether there will be more but if they want it Emma has all the Apesters on her speed dial. "Apes" producer Dylan Clark told me not only would he be interested in doing more but he thinks there SHOULD be more. Director Matt Reeves is off in Batman land so there would prob need to be a new director (maybe Watts' old boss Oliver Stone?).

But the new era of Fox is starting to take shape and we should have some answers soon.

      .html

Disney has officially announced who will run Fox when the Mouse embraces it in early 2019. They are bringing over pretty much the same crew that's already been running it.

Emma Watts (a big Apes booster) will run 20th Century Fox; Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula will run the acclaimed independent film branch Fox Searchlight (which won the Best Picture Oscar this year for "The Shape of Water"); Elizabeth Gabler will run Fox 2000; Andrea Miloro, Robert Baird will top Fox Animation; and Vanessa Morrison with Fox Family. Alan Horn is chairman of Disney Studios and will be head honcho.

Disney topper Bob Iger sez: "Under Alan Horn's leadership, Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm have reached unprecedented levels of creative and box office success, and adding Fox's impressive film brands and franchises to ourstudio will allow us to create even more appealing high-quality entertainment to delight audiences".

Sounds like they will continue to let Fox do their thing. But that is a lot of content under one roof and Apes might draw the short stick. Part of the reason Fox kept taking a chance on Apes wuz they didn't have a lot of huge franchises. Apes is now a small fish in a big pond. But the last 3 films recently did over $1 billion so Disney is probably kicking the tires. And if they do more, will there be the creative freedom to do social commentary, etc. that it's known for? Too soon to tell but keeping the Fox brain trust is a good start.

It wuz 25 years ago today (12/4/93) that Charlton Heston ape-peared on Saturday Night Live and opened with an elaborate POTA skit. I remember being blown away, compounded by Oliver Stone having recently been announced for a new Ape movie (Los Angeles Times, 10/24/93). It wuz the Big Bang of a POTA revival that resulted in POTA2001 (with a Heston cameo), "Rise", "Dawn" and "War".

At the time of SNL, the original POTA was 25. Now it's 50 and this skit is 25 (see how that works?).

I guess only the monologue exists on youtube, not the skit but I have the whole thing somewhere.

Well, it wuz a mixed 50th anniversary year for POTA. Lots of new books and comics, a fantastic retrospective at USC that Fox helped with. But also the future in question as POTA goes off the Disney cliff.

And of course the loss of outspoken fan (and my friend) Rory. I finished the year reading two books Rory would've loved (though of course found nits to pick): J.W. Rinzler's "Making of POTA" and Michael Benson's "Space Odyssey".

Apes and "2001" were the ultimate cultural double bill in 1968 and they will always be linked in my mind as early subversive sci-fi (and both about apes and space travel and the destiny of Man). 25 years ago I called them "blood brothers".

Hopefully 2019 will give us an indication of where Disney plans to take Apes for the NEXT 50 years (if you think Disney won't be here in 50 years, forget it … well, unless no one's here in 50 years).

Meanwhile, the best to you and yours in the coming year!

      Thanks for the roundup Jeff.

It has been an ever increasing slow year on this Yahoo forum which I kind of miss but honestly there have been so many PotA books/comics/toys/stuff coming out this last year that I have not kept up with even with the books which was something I could always be counted on to do in the past. I will be buying more but only once I finish reading those I have.

I wish Rory was still around, even if only to 'nitpick' as you say.

Well I hope you and all the other stalwarts still reading these messages a Happy New year, Apish and otherwise.

Hi Jeff and thank you – I hope we all have a terrific 2019.

I'm disappointed in this year's celebrations and I'll speak for Rory here.

We missed out on a 50th Anniversary Release of Planet. Something with new things we have never seen before. Some of those deleted scenes.

The books are great and Rory managed to have one desiccated to him – John O'Callaghan's Location Location Location. Some joy that Rory crossed this off his bucket list – walking on the sacred grounds of POTA film locations. I guess he just reached that place where not being here was better than being here. I really wish I was there for him.

Very happy to see the corner turned by BOOM! Comics with the Dana Gould Graphic Novel and the Ursus comic. Hope this is indicative of their future, but somewhat sceptical!

Incredibly upset to have poured time, money and resources into a "POTA Merchandise" book only to be ripped off to the tunes of many thousands of dollars by a huge player in POTA (who managed to get his own book released while sucking my funds dry then refusing to pay back money I lent him and show nothing in return for the work I'd paid him to do). Be careful people there's a very convincing shark out there selling dreams and smooth talking his way out of evr showing anything for it!

      But 2019 hold new things.

I'm going to keep going with the book.

Neil and I are following another idea.

And I hope to mark 2019 as the year we got Jeff on Facebook where all the fans get their news with pictures! Jeff come on bro we need you!

      Have a great year everyone

      Michael

Disney has announced March 20 as the closing of the Disney/Fox deal.

OK, I will need someone to hold my hand. Thank you.

That means on March 20, wait for it, POTA will belong to Disney.

      What does that mean? Dunno.

Is it too much to ask that Disney pick up the cartoon and TV series where it was left off in the 70s?

This week the movie studios presented their wares at CinemaCon in Vegas.

It also provided the first official confirmation from Fox since being swallowed by Disney that they will continue the "Apes" films in some fashion (as well as "Alien").

Will they pick up from the recent films or start over? Remains 2 be seen.

Emma Watts remains the head of Fox and is a big "Apes" cheerleader so it's probably in good hands if Disney doesn't interfere too much. Reportedly Fox's deal with "Apes" producer Peter Chernin is still in place so my guess is they'll pick up where they left off.

It is encouraging and not really a surprise since the last films have done OK from a financial perspective (at least as far as I know). I wish they had more definitive plans to share but at least it's not bad news.

Would anybody know more what's happening on the comics end of things? I have a "Planet of the Apes" title alert that kicks in at my local comic shop when new titles are announced by diamond but now that the POTA releases have slowed to a trickle I haven't even been to my shop in over a month. I'm still awaiting for the WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE issue to get to my shop but after that I haven't heard of anything else.

New owner Disney continues to beat the drum that they will continue "Planet of the Apes" in some form.

At an earnings call Tuesday, Disney head Robert Iger mentioned some of their Fox properties that will make a comeback (including reboots of "Home Alone" and "A Night At the Museum" for their new streaming service Disney +).

He said there is "great long term value in the broad collection of theatrical IP we acquired from Fox, including . . . "Avatar" and "Planet of the Apes".

How Apes will continue remains to be seen, though reportedly the producer of the recent acclaimed "Apes" movies, Chernin Entertainment, has been retained by Disney, so it's possible they could continue from the Caesar trilogy.

Or they could just start over. Who knows about the future?

Word has it that Disney has let the Fox revival theater liaisons go and new owner Disney will no longer let Fox movies go to revival/independent theaters.

There seemed to be a revival lately of the original "Apes" movies in small theater chains. Hope you got to see them.

One of probably many upcoming changes to the Apescape.

The indie theaters where fully expecting this the moment Disney bought Fox. The ones in my area have focused on Fox films in the last month knowing (and promoting the fact) that these would be the last time people could see some of them on the big screen.

Sad to know that films like the Rocky Horror Picture Show won't have any late night screenings anymore. That in itself is the end of an era.

Question is: Was Natalie ever approached to play any role/roles on the television series? She would have been familiar with working in the make-up, and, since she was in as many of the original films as Roddy (four each), she would have been quite familiar to fans and her name might have been a "draw" as a guest-star, so she had the "ape credentials"...

I know "POTA" wasn't Arthur's "baby" anymore in 1974, having sold the rights to Fox by then, so Natalie wouldn't have Arthur tapping her to play any more roles, but maybe the producers of the TV series thought she might have been a good fit anyway? Any idea Jeff?

Good question. I haven't seen Natalie in a long time.

She hated the TV show because it was Apes without Arthur Jacobs, her husband.

I tried to watch it with her and she couldn't do it.

Plus the show was so close to Arthur's death.

I don't think it ever came up. She was in Apes because Arthur asked her to.

One thing to add is Kim Hunter said she was approached to play Roddy's girlfriend in "The Surgeon" and turned it down.

That episode also has a cameo (one line in an ape mask) by James Naughton's brother David, who arguably is more famous than his brother, especially in the late '70's (Dr. Pepper commercial, "An American Werewolf in London", the show "Makin' It").

Those who want to argue, just imagine taking pictures of James and David Naughton out in public and asking people who they recognize. I would bet David got more recognition, just from "Werewolf". And those Dr. Pepper commercials were big for those who remember them.

I was at a sci-fi con with Booth Colman and David Naughton came up and just was so happy to see Booth.

David was also there as a guest.

POTA and many other Fox films look to be going "into the vault" as new owner Disney pulls them from revival theaters.

Looks like the legendary "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is the lone survivor, since it's reputation as a midnight movie precedes it.

I know there are/were some clamoring for 4K HD releases of the "Apes" films, I think that won't be coming to fruition...

          Hi Whitty,

Yeah, it sucks about the Yahoo! groups coming to an end... I joined up around the time pota2001 was going to be released, so 18 years ago more or less...I've signed on to Hunter's group, but haven't received any messages from over there yet, so maybe I'll need to start a topic to get things rolling...

I don't know how Jeff/AKA Veetus feels about Facebook nowadays, but I'm still leary of the whole thing... I'm not totally against the idea of it all, but I'm holding off, at least for now...

I basically missed the whole 50th Anniversary thing due to email troubles of my own... I wasn't shutdown, just had issues when they switched to a new format...

Just watched "The Cure" on MeTV, still a great episode of the TV series...

What a joke. Yahoo! was offering a way to download "Your Yahoo Groups data", without specifying exactly what that would be. I decided to do that, thinking maybe I'd get an archive of all of the posts.

I submitted the request on October 17. I finally received an email early this morning---10 days later---telling me my data was ready. I clicked the link, and was greeted with:

          Your Yahoo Groups data

Your download request has been completed, but no data of this type is available in your account.

I like the idea of everyone coming to a place instead of having to find everyone's page.

Facebook is just a big sea of people (with your profile being sold to the highest bidder).

Plus the apes are overdue. They'll be here soon.

I'm a member of another longstanding club that used Yahoo for messaging and Photo/Data archive for many years.
They wiped out our photos/Data without any notification eve before this latest announcement. Years of history that I was more than willing to download one file at a time if necessary. I blame myself partially for procrastinating to do it which was on my 'to do someday' list for a long time. But I never imagined that we we not get any notice before they would start deleting.

This a a reminder not to trust Cloud Services for any data you want to keep. Backup, backup, backup...

POTA and many other Fox films look to be going "into the vault" as new owner Disney pulls them from revival theaters.

Looks like the legendary "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is the lone survivor, since it's reputation as a midnight movie precedes it.

Hey Jeff and Mike – good to read you after my internet provider suspended my email account for over 6 months!

We also received notification that this group is being shut down by Yahoo!

          Not good news.

This 50th Anniversary really hasn't been a big deal at all.

I hope you guys will jump over to Facebook now.

We still find stuff to talk about there

I'm actually not surprised by this.... I think it'll be a long time (if ever) before we hear from "Apes" again....

I know there are/were some clamoring for 4K HD releases of the "Apes" films, I think that won't be coming to fruition...

Well, we had a good run there for a while. I think it's about 16 years since I signed up, mainly because there was such a lack of detailed info online back then. We've come a long way as a community since, with the franchise back where it belongs in the public consciousness. One of the things I went on about quite a lot over the years was the need for a book showcasing the production art from the original project. Having got my paws on J.W. Rinzler's book, I can say that that has been done, and done well. To be honest, my interests have moved on to other areas, but I value the memories of the tight-knit and very creative group that once was, and the friendships that go beyond POTA fandom.

You who are reading me now are a different breed. I hope, a better one. I leave the Yahoo group with no regrets.

Thanks to the admins for organising and keeping this going so long, and to all the contributors over the years.

It feels like the hammer will fall, but for now I am fine just staying here.

Everything is up in the air; what will happen here, what Disney will do with Apes.

I would like Oliver Stone to do what he started in 1993. He could use the box office.

And Ah-nuld as a character as it wuz over 25 years ago.

Second choice: Peter Jackson. He (and his friends) created WETA and he started Andy Serkis' motion capture career. Jackson's POTA history is so incredible. He did an Apes movie as a kid, he tried to do an Apes movie in the 90's and no less than Roddy McDowall was his champion. Literally at one point Jackson was to do an Apes movie produced by James Cameron and starring Ah-nuld. But Jackson assumed those two would stick together and he wouldn't get to do his movie as he saw it (he later realized he was wrong).

So we could have had a Peter Jackson directed, Cameron produced movie with Roddy instead of Burton's POTA2001. Who knows if it would've been better.

Roddy died in 2008 and Jackson lost interest. He had created a FX company called WETA so they needed a big movie. Assumed "Lord of the Rings" was taken, but it wasn't (maybe because MGM had the rights to the prequel "The Hobbit") and they got the rights.

The rest is history, including Andy Serkis as King Kong for Jackson.

If there was one director who is perfect to continue the Apes movies as they have been the last decade, it is Jackson. Andy Serkis, WETA, Jackson's history with it.

I still hold out hope Stone will do it but unlikely.

Jackson would seem destiny except he would probably require more money than Disney would allow.

.html I bought a program yesterday (PG Offline) that allowed me to download all of the files, photos, and messages from the potaDG Yahoo! group.

All 45,000+ messages available are now on my system, too. Note that there was the occasional error "Message XXXX does not exist." I don't know if they were deleted by the moderator(s) at various times, or if they correspond with Yahoo! glitches over the years. Only 54 messages did not exist.

However, the messages start with message number 18719, dated June 30, 2004. I don't know if that corresponds to a moderator switch, or if the first few years' messages were deleted by someone, or whatever. But from June 30, 2004, through today, I have all the messages.

Now I have to figure out what to do with it all. But at least there's a copy besides what's at Yahoo!

          Stay tuned.

Hunter, I used to have most of the early posts saved as a text file somewhere. The reason was that back then Yahoo only had limited space available to the groups and they would delete the early posts when they got to a certain limit. As we wanted to keep the old posts I spent hours downloading them and sorting them out and saving them as a huge text file as I had no other way of saving them back then.
I'll have a look to see if I can find them if they will be any use to you but it has been a few newer computers since then for various reasons so I may not even have them but like I said I'll have a look, would have thought that would have been older than 2004 though, so there may well be gaps.

Just an FYI to others that may be in the same predicament with other Yahoo groups.

If you are technically inclined there is another (free) alternative to saving ALL you data from existing Yahoo groups. A Python script I found on GitHub did the trick for another group that I desperately wanted to save all the data before it got wiped:

I was able to save everything: Pictures, files, emails and even all the attachments. (Emails are in JSON and RAW formats so will need a bit of extra processing). Even got to download a members list (alias only, not actual names or email addresses. Had to scrape active session cookies but even if you don't know how to do that the README gives examples for Chrome and Firefox. Did it all from a UbuntuVM. Took a while to download but worked flawlessly once it was setup. (You can download ALL at once or selected only those categories you want).

          And now back to APES!

          Dario
