Ah yes, "Land of the Lost". Burton said that was the inspiration for POTA2001 (in his commentary). Of course, Ron Harper starred in Season 2. - - - Jeff

Thats what I was saying too... Although, I believe you can get by with just
one person doing a full length commentary, as long as they're commenting on the
screen itself...
I just bought the Land Of The Lost Season one DVD set and it has commentary
on it, and a lot of the commentary is just one person commenting on one full
length episode, and it works... <.html

Actually, he was in season 3 as "Uncle Jack"... Anyway, not having seen any
of pota2001, other than a few stills, and what I read on the old group, you
have me wondering, what did he say was inspired by LOTL on pota'01?

.htmlI think Burton's comment is toward the end of the movie. He just says it
in a general sense, "This movie was inspired by my "Land of the Lost" youth"
or something. He just gets a big kick out of wallowing in cheesiness. I just
thought that was an odd comment because some people have complained that the
movie was more like the TV show than the original movies. Yet Burton managed
to pull a different Ron Harper show out of his hat.
By the way, Ron Harper was complaining about the scripts for the POTA show
and told me he felt "Land of the Lost" was well written, and more what the
POTA writers should've shot for. So I guess Burton gave Ron what he wanted,
tiger. - - - Jeff

By the time Harper was on "LOTL," David Gerrold wasn't involved that I know
of, but when watching his interview on the boxed set, he (Gerrold) said how as
the first season's story editor, he carefully laid out plans for the show...
He took made sure that there was going to be a sense of continuity, and that
things would make sense from week to week... He also mentioned how he broke the
show down, by that I mean he took the central figures and gave them each there
"own" episode, he knew Dinosaurs were part of the show so there were 3
episodes where they were heavily involved in the storyline, 3 Sleestak episodes,
etc., etc.
That's probably what the PLANET OF THE APES tv series needed, someone like
Gerrold to oversee the scripts and make sure there was a sense of continuity,
and to break the episodes up more so there wasn't so much repetition.
Personally I don't think the APES tv series is quite as repetitious as some might say
it is, but it's true that there should have been more variety in the type of
stories it told. That's probably why it could have done better with someone like
David at the helm... Someone who knows Sci-fi, and knew how to be a story
editor. Plus, he had connections and he got some of the better writers of the day
to script "LOTL"...

.htmlHere's what I have been working on. Keeping the cliff side art from
the original POTA box and stretching it a bit (and painting out all
the text and transforming the title back to unstretched proportions).
I tell you I felt kinda funny taking a picture of the statue of
Liberty and retouching it to the condition it was in POTA burried in
the sand on the 4'th of July.
The box has built in "seams" or natural breaks in the art so I can

Here's what I have been working on.
The box has built in "seams" or natural breaks in the art so I can
join 2 pieces together to compensate for the fact I can't print
taller them 10.5 inches (the box will be 13 inches tall). this is a
more sophisiticated version of what I do anyway in making boxes so it
should work out okay
On the cliff art front and side the break between the top of the
rocks and the sky. On the Statue of Liberty side panel the break is
between the sand and liberty. On the back it's the seperation between
the blue apes title and the rest of the back

primitive apes. I know at Plimouth Plantation they "breed back" cows
to be more like the cows that came over on the Mayflower.

.htmlCool, we agree on this! IMHO ;), Beneath was the least of the POTA
movies. (Not including 2001, which we don't agree on.) But my
second favorite was actually Escape. I thought it was very touching,
dramatic, and thought provoking.
As far as I can tell, all the others WERE in another universe --
ESPECIALLY Pota2001 -- although I find the TV series VERY enjoyable
and great family fodder. (I really don't know about the toons, as I
don't remember them.)

You're entitled to your opinion, but what is it about BENEATH that you don't
like? Anything in particular, or just the whole idea/concept of it? Or, you

This is probably one of the better plays on the name I read, but face it,
ANSA is just a play on the NASA name, that's it... The same way they made up the
term TX-9 as a piece of equipment in a backpack, they played on the NASA name
to create ANSA...
Maybe at the time of PLANET's filming they were denied permission because
NASA was trying to get real life space exploration going and didn't want it's
name threw into a movie, and by the time of ESCAPE, they were using NASA in the
APES movies because it was "ok" for them to do it... Maybe ANSA is something
they just made up to send Taylor and crew into space, and later on, Paul Dehn
(in his way of not fact checking from film to film) just used NASA in ESCAPE
rather than the original POTA space administration ANSA... Who knows for sure...
But face it, it stands for nothing other than what is being made up here...

Unless all the patches were made up at the same time and when they
got handed to whoever gets them next the mistake was discovered and
they thought 'oh b*gger it, we'll just have to use what we've got, we
haven't got the time to change something so small and trivial when we
have to spend all or time and effort making sure the make-ups look
okay, besides it'll give the fans something to think about in the

movie. I just didn't
like the story direction after Planet. I thought the plot of the bomb and
mutants was Hollywood's desperate attempt to come up with a sequel to the
original. Since Mr Heston didn't want to do another movie, I just would have placed
another actor in the role and continued the story with Taylor. Elaine

.htmlThe explaination may even be simpler. NASA is just mentioned in
Escape. No one can prevent the name of a government agency being
used in a script. However, in Planet & Beneath use of the NASA logo
would have been required. That's a registered trademark that can't
be used without permission.
Now the question is since a the TV series 'I Dream of Jeannie' and
the movie 'Marooned' (with James Fransicus) both used the NASA logo
during the same period, did the POTA producers ask for permission or
were they turned down.

Dave
Rather than a cornfield, the round-up in The Time Machine '02 takes place in
what I believe is a bamboo grove, but I definitely know what you mean by the
comparison. It's a more or less identical plot device. The scene reminds
me more of the hunt scene in POTA '01 though. Oddly enough, I think the
hunt scene in The Time Machine '02 is better than the one in POTA '01. What
do you think?
Anyway, that's why it's difficult for me to pin down which scenes I like
best from the original five films. Planet alone has a host of really
striking and extremely memorable scenes. The hunt sequence is definitely
way up there in terms of most dramatic scenes in the original film series.
And you know what they say: "Often imitated, never equaled."

In my opinion that point can be debated. The script (which is

skyline and no date is mentioned.
In addition, the ruins of San Francisco in 'The Trap' are clearly
from the 20th Century not the 26th.
My interpetation is that the writers were unsure about the
backstory. Menluth mentioned the series bible. It would be great to
get a look at it to see what direction the writers were given.

obviously they were designed /created by someone for the uniforms in
the movies, (possibly morton haack?)-but iv'e wondered for ages as to
whether the glyphs actually mean anything? yes, there are different
ones on the various uniforms, but one can't help notice that some of
them are more prominent throughout the films & t.v. series!- for
example, the glyph worn on the chimps leather tunic is also on the
lawgiver's robe (third one down). these glyphs are "sacred scroll"
letters, i know ,-i'm just kinda interested to know if someone

I was aware that you were using the script to support your point of view - and from that conjecture it is certainly valid. But I was just trying to advise you your viewpoint does not coincide with what appeared on the
screen. If you agree with most fans that screen revealed facts should be considered as canon over other sources then 2503 is the revealed date.
The script from Hunter's site is a wonderful resource and I have previously examined it (as an aside may I pubicly acknowledge that Hunter has a magnificent site which I am glad is available to us all on the net).
However the script would appear to be an early draft (Ed Rowak appears in the list of characters as opposed to Burke). Yes the picture is a drawing - but I would have to agree with the point I read on another post once
- it was a plot device which was only one the screen for a few seconds, they didn't have the budget to create a futuristic photo.
As for the ruined subway station I could attempt to rationalise it but I won't. It is not my story and anything I say would only be a guess. I would like to agree with those souls who have stated that it is dangerous
to try and unravel the timelines. By all means go ahead if you want though, if you have fun then that is great! But we all know there are many inconsitencies in the movies and television show, thankfully those small
flaws don't stop us enjoying the experience.
In closing let me say that any point I offer is only my bumbling attempt to share information. Most of this I have gleaned from reading the posts in this group and in other sites on the net. Any viewpoint you or anyone
else is just as valid (if not more so).
Cheers,

I think you've missed the whole point of my original post. I'm not
disputing canon at all. My point was that there are so many
discrepancies in the TV series (as well as the movies) that one
factiod should not be used to prove one theory or another while
ignoring the all other evidence that disputes it.
I believe the original poster used that example as prove that the TV
series was a different universe than the movies. While another
stated that it proved the TV series was in the same timeline as the
first 2 films.
My point was that there were enough discrepencies and changes that
neither statement could be proved absolutely. And without the
writer's bible from the TV series it is hard to know what the
intention of the producer's really was.

John, this item is critical to the completion of any article on POTA Action
Figures. It is VERY strange!
It is a figure of Che Guevarra (spelling) with and interchangable Caesar
head!
Rare!
TOTALLY DISCONTINUED*****MINT IN BOX/NEVER REMOVED/FACTORY
SEALED****INCREDIBLY DETAILED & ARTICULATED "REBEL APE" MEGO/GI.JOE STYLE
12" FIGURE BY MEDICOM,JAPAN.This item was a special MAIL AWAY EXCLUSIVE made
ONLY for Japanese market and was NOT sold in any retail stores. It is a
EXTREMELY HARD item to find(which you had to reserve PRIOR to the release)
DIRECTLY with MEDICOM.The LIFE LIKE details are absolutely INCREDIBLE.By
looking at the FACE of the figure(anyone would know immediately)that is so
CLOSE,actually IDENTICAL to Roddy McDowell`s true character!!! From the
CONCEPT of the window CUT-OUT on the box(looks like CAESAR`S HEAD SHADOW
from THE CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES poster)all the way to the
originally designed special army outfit. This figure also comes with a extra
"Human face/mask" for special DISGUISE plus extra WEAPONS for battle. Also
the ENTIRE writing on the BOX including "REBEL APE"is all silk screened in
Black letters on top of the army green box. What is also amazing is-the
INSIDE of the back card in Red & Black(which the figure is attached to)is
VERY similar to the photo of "CAESAR" type images. The ENTIRE
packaging(inside & out)on this item is AWESOME-TOP QUALITY!This is DEFINTELY
a serious MUST for a true POTA collector.NOTE:THIS IS NOT A NEW RELEASED
ITEM,AND IS VERY HARD TO FIND! A FANTASTIC ADDITION to your POTA & MEGO
collection-dont miss out!

Sorry, Michael. No scanner. I got it from eBay well over a year ago,
and I recall several of them being around at the time. Go to
www.kidrobot.com, and you'll find a nice, large-sized picture of the

Thanks, Kass, for the link to this one. I had ordered the earlier
run (and still waiting their arrival) of 12" figures from Sideshow,
but had no idea that they were coming out with an 18" Lawgiver, the
greatest of all apes!!! (according to Cornelius anyway). What say
the experts on this group? Is this a worthy reproduction of the
Lawgiver statue? Did they get it right?
Menluth.
It's hard to say just from viewing pictures of the prototype, but I almost
prefer Medicom's Greatest Ape. It was certainly a lot cheaper and a lot
easier to store.

Here you go. According to the final shooting script in the group files section this is from the 23rd scroll, 9th verse.
"Beware the beast man, for he is the
devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates,
he kills for sport, or lust or greed.
Yes, he will murder his brother to possess
his brother's land. Let him not breed
in great numbers, for he will make a desert
of his home and yours. Shun him. Drive him
back into his jungle lair: For he is the
harbinger of death."

saying in the book "Life of Pi" written by Yann Martel. THe saying is
posted on sign in a zoo called Pondicherry India. "Do you know who is
most dangerous animal in the zoo?" The sign is hung just above a
curtain. THe zoo guest eager to know the answer, draw open the
curtian and find they are looking at their own refelctions. Very
clever this is but it so tragicly true. YOu wouldn't believe what
people use to, and still do to zoo animals. It's appauling.

Time Machine was great, and the soundtrack is definitely a keeper.
It's a great story in its own right. But anything that reminds me
positively of an Apes movie is noteworthy in my books.

Ho Will,
Much though I love my Medicoms, I am VERY psyched over this new
Lawgiver. I just uploaded the Flash Plugin so I could view the
rotating Flash gallery views of the Sideshow Lawgiver. Most
impressive. Sure, the Medicom Lawgiver is much easier to tote
around, should we feel the need, but you just can't have a large
enough Lawgiver. Had I the means and the space, I'd be calling up
Apemania in a second to commission their ultimate exact replica
statue. This is my holy grail! Even better than that might be the
one the Mutants conjured up for Gen. Ursus' army. Now that was a
serious Lawgiver!

You're right, Rob. I wonder if McDowall decided to adlib that one.
If so, it was a great improvement. "Yes" just doesn't seem to convey
the weightiness of those lines. Who didn't come out the theatre, or
walk around the house after seeing PA68 on tv, muttering those lines
to themselves? Classic stuff!

The 23rd Scroll, 9th verse has some interesting choices of words.
Note that humanity are described as "among God's primates". That
would indicate that, at some point, the apes believe humans to be a
primate creation of God, just like themselves. That line does more
to bring the species together than to separate them. Had we not
heard more of the Sacred Scrolls, I might have assumed that, at one
point in ape mythology, they viewed apes and humans to be equal, but
that the humans "fell" from grace, making them "alone" because of
their vices.
I say I might have assumed that, except that we also learn that
Proteus, in some sort of ape eden, made sport of the human. The apes
seem to view their separation from humans as having taken place very
early in the development of creation. Any thoughts on this?

primate does indicate
that they view humans as part of the primate order. It also suggests the
existence of other
primates and it makes me wonder how the apes would view baboons, gibbons,
monkeys etc. They probably have the most animosity towards humans. Elaine
