Group: potadg Message: 19022 From: ape_mom Date: 7/8/2004
Subject: 35th Anniversary DVD
.html
Ok, y'all. Yesterday I had a six hour wait in a waiting room and
needed something to do so... I took along my portable DVD player and
watched the commentaries from the 35th Anniversary Planet. This was
not done without interruption, mind you, so my thoughts aren't
entirely "pure." [I also watched the commentary on Jeepers Creepers
2 which featured our friend Brian Penikas (makeups) and two other
guys. ;)]

I can see both sides of the love it / hate it reviews. I wonder why
they did Eric Greene's commentary in text. Does anyone know? Maybe
he doesn't have a good screen voice? The commentary that I watched
on the Creeper showed scenes with a conversational voice-over. I
wish they had taken time to do something like that with Eric Greene's
work, even if he (or someone else) read it. I did enjoy the
Goldsmith bit, even though he didn't say much and it wasn't "deep."
Hearing the music over the scenery was real cool. Also, being
somewhat of a classical music lover, I thought the piccolo story was
cute. I'd have said the same thing about flutes. In any case, we
got some fine music that stretched the limits of the time.

Having been gifted with "Behind the POTA" (thanks, Michael) I guess I
can see why some felt abused. Although some of the Roddy home videos
were included in that, I don't think they showed the entire makeup
process the way the home videos did. (I'm going by memory here.)
Anyway, I enjoyed seeing that. (I think it would be an entirely
relaxing 4 - 6 hours being made up like that. The three hour wait to
shooting would have been a bear, though!)

Well, those are thoughts off the top of my head. I hadn't even
unwrapped it before yesterday, so it was quite a treat. I think they
must have had a plan for new things when they put the effort into
pulling it all together. I'm glad they did it, and I hope it means
that more good things lie ahead.

I still have more to watch. Six hours seems like a long time, but
not time enough.

I was struck, reading the Sacred Scrolls transcript, by the reference
to 'God's primates'.Did the Apes have one Supreme God and, if so, who
was he? It can't be The Lawgiver, because he wrote the Scrolls, on
behalf of the God.Could be Arthur Jacobs I suppose.John, Scrolls.

I think the Apes think of the Lawgiver as God's prophet on Earth. At
least that's was the Minister states during the ape service in
Beneath. He also says that the Apes were created in God's image. So
their God is an Ape.

12th and Final Chapter.

I am looking at the next two (10 and 11) right now - they look VERY good
(but I am biased!).

Typically, each chapter somehow still gets better.

Chapter 10 has a concluding page that is similar to page 21 (where Gideon
discovers the ship).

Now - back to Chapter 9.....

Question 1:

Can anybody see a "tribute" to a great actor/character?

I can, but I am an enormous fan of this particular actor/character.

No, not Mike Tysone, but that's a very good answer Helen!

HINT - the "tyson tribute" is not the page I am referring to....

Well, it's up to you!

If you want to see chapter 10, the question of WHEN is TOTALLY in YOUR
hands!

It will be placed EXCLUSIVELY in the DG Fan Fic Group.

When?

As soon as I see 10 reviews of POTA Fan Fic in this group!

Part of the reason Dave has given us his valuable time and stories was to
inspire people to write Fan Fic about POTA.

If the prospect of seeing your vision made into a comic is not enough, then
we'll compromise and encourage you to READ some FF!

So....get reading and let's have some comments please!

I'd love to say 24 hours, because ideally I have worked out that, to provide
the world with a monthly POTA comic (of around 22 pages), we would need to
pump out a page per day (that's inked, with text completed and ready to go).

However, take as long as you like.

I think all participants should use this as an indicator of whether it would
be viable for them to "WORK LIVE" on a comic or if they might just want to
take their time and complete it, then submit for publishing.

I would hate to get a deal from a compant to do a monthly POTA Comic and
discover it is an impossible task!

Ho Will,
Much though I love my Medicoms, I am VERY psyched over this new
Lawgiver. I just uploaded the Flash Plugin so I could view the
rotating Flash gallery views of the Sideshow Lawgiver. Most
impressive. Sure, the Medicom Lawgiver is much easier to tote
around, should we feel the need, but you just can't have a large
enough Lawgiver. Had I the means and the space, I'd be calling up
Apemania in a second to commission their ultimate exact replica
statue. This is my holy grail! Even better than that might be the
one the Mutants conjured up for Gen. Ursus' army. Now that was a
serious Lawgiver!
Menluth.

Ho Menluth!

Darn cool name you've got! Glad you're such a Lawgiver fan. Just how much
does a full sized lawgiver statue run anyway? I tried looking it up on
Apemania's site but it said you have to call for a quote. Oh, and have you
seen that new ANSA backpack they've got? Sweet!

Ted Post (Beneath) directed the 2nd Dirty Harry movie - Magnum Force
and Lalo Schifrin (TV show) did the music for some of the DH films.

Also can I just add, big Clint fan that I am, the 'tribute' panel in

Where are Apes as slaves? That was projected for 1991. Where are
flying cars? How many movies and stories projected those by now.
Where are the orbiting space stations, lunar colonies and
expeditions to Jupiter projected in 2001.
Burke does tell Urko that he came from the time the station was
built and has knowledge of it that can be useful then uses the ads
to prove what he said.
The original post in this thread was about someone thinking about
writing a story in which Virdon finds the ruins of his home. That
poster was told they couldn't because of the picture of NYC.
My point is that there are enough discrepancies in the TV series
that any interpetation is possible.

OK Guys. If I am to find the chimp who played baby Milo (and Salome)
in Escape, I need the ape actor's real name. I can't seem to find
that out.

So, I am wondering if any of you know the name of someone I could
contact at Fox who might have that information? Does someone here
have a contact that they could approach to find this out? Does
someone here know?

According to a letter I received today, it is very likely that he
(she?) went to a research facility. Identities can be lost and the
fact that this guy was an actor probably isn't earning him extra
bananas. I've come in contact with a bunch of people who have been
very helpful. I am presently in touch with two different groups that
track the chimps that were used in films, and both are very willing
to help. Without a name, though, they can't help. He isn't credited
in the film.

Anyone?

That's very possible. It's one explaination. But the point is there
can be many explainations since there were many discrepencies. So if
someone wants to write a story about Virdon finding the ruins of his
home (which would be a different explaination); there should be
nothing to dissuade them from doing it.

According to IMDB the animal furnisher on the film was Roy Kabat.
There's no other info on him. Have you thought about contacting
Frank Capra? He made be able to lead you to Mr. Kabat.

Thanks, James.

In 1977, Roy Kabat founded Dogs for the Deaf (DFD). He died in 1986.
His daughter, Mrs. Robin Dickson, is his successor and the current
CEO/President of Dogs for the Deaf. In November, our family met with
her and her precious little dog, Tybo. She was wonderful, telling us
how she grew up at JungleLand with the elephants, llamas, big cats,
and other exotic animals. She was a big help to us, and we followed
up on her leads. She said it would be helpful to find Hubert Wells
and/or Wally Ross. They worked out of Moorpark College. She figures
the chimp came from there. Also, JungleLand was closed down by the
time Escape was filmed. We recently learned that Hubert Wells died
in 1985 or '86. We will continue trying to get in touch with
Moorpark College and with Wally Ross, but so far, we have not had any
luck with either of these.

the chimp's name was or what agency he actually he came from. I'm
guessing Moorpark College, but I don't know that for sure.

One of the best things about the POTA DG's internal website is
the "One Sheets" section because it not only shows the lobby
cards and movie posters from each film but it also features the
music to each film. Excellent job!

So, does anybody know if the soundtrack albums of each of the
five original films are available anywhere? I already have a
Japanese produced soundtrack CD of Planet that I got while I
lived overseas, but I've always wondered if the other four films
are on CD somewhere in the world.

Hey Will,

The scores for Beneath and Conquest/Batlle are still available
from FSM (Film Score Monthly)

https://secure.filmscoremonthly.com/store/cds.asp

They provide on-line ordering and offer excellent service.

The score for Escape is available officially only as a 'suite' on the
original POTA soundtrack but there is a bootleg, often coupled
with Goldsmith's 'The Mephisto Waltz'

The FSM discs are readily available - if you have problems with
the 'Escape' soundtrack drop me a line off board and I'll see
what I can do for you.

His daughter, Mrs. Robin Dickson, is his successor and the current

her and her precious little dog, Tybo.

Yes, He is here in North Carolina in a town called
Wilmington where there is a studio . (The WB show "One
Tree Hill" is filmed there and "Dawson's Creek" used

wrote a long letter to Mr. Capra, Jr. about a year ago
asking him if he could help us find out what happened
to deleted scenes, etc. but I never heard back from
him. My guess is that since the studio is slow now
(from all the film work going to Canada!!) that he
doesn't spend much time there. However, the address of
the Studio is :

1235 N. 23rd Street
Wilmington, NC 28405

Not sure of the name of the studio at the moment as it
has changed several times in the last years. But I
will try and find out.

Okay...

Lalo Schifrin in addition to providing the musical accompaniment for Mr.
Callahan's exploits - Mr. Schifrin is credited not only for devising the
main title theme of the "APes" TV series, but was composer of the scores
for three episodes ("The Good Seeds", "The Gladiators" and "Escape from
Tomorrow").

Woodrow Parfrey (who portrayed Chimpanzee prefect "Veska" in the TV
series debut episode, "Escape from Tomorrow") is in "Dirty Harry"
itself.

Sondra Locke, ("Amy" in "The Cure") was in "Sudden Impact", the fourth
of the movies - in addition to being Mr. Eastwood's partner for a time.

Lastly.... The City itself, "San Francisco", the setting of the movies,
was also the setting for the TV episode, "The Trap" - and if I remember
rightly, at the risk of getting into the realms of the obscure, I think
the BART system gets a name check in one of the Dirty Harry movies, and,
in the same vein, I think that Sutter Street (the location of the Frisco
BART station Burke and Urko become entrapped in during "The Trap") is
mentioned in one of the Dirty Harry movies, too...

Am I close?

One thing that I thought was really effective, I assume it was
intentional, was that the fan spread came right after the windowpane
spread. To go from the uniform image of the window to the shattering
image on the following page really caught the tension, I think.

A also enjoy the way the story is presented. It is almost poetic.
Definitely not done in a hurry by amateurs.

Dave:

Thanks so much for the link! I have both FSM's Beaneath and Conquest/Battle
CD's on order, thanks to you! I thought they were a tad pricey though, but
I guess with a limited production of only 3000 copies and limited
availability, that's what you get.

FSM's website states that, "Jerry Goldsmith's scores to 1968's Planet of the
Apes and 1971's Escape from the Planet of the Apes are available on CD from
Varese Sarabande." I found Varese Sarabande's site but am kind of in a
quandry about whether to spring for their Planet CD (Sort of how some people
are unsure about wether to buy the 35th Anniversary DVD of Planet). It's
different from the Japanese version I got overseas, for sure, but it's
pretty much the same music from what I can tell. The sequence of the music
is totally different on the Japanese disc than it is on Varese Sarabande
however. And of course, the Japanese version doesn't have that one measley
cut of Escape music. I do really like the cover for the Varese Sarabande
disc though. I'm not sure where that artwork comes from, but it's really a
great representation from the film. Anybody have any info on that? It
looks like a foreign release poster, complete with the green and black
gorilla soldier color scheme (Don't you just love the way us Yankee's spell
colour?).

The Japanese CD is really interesting. The cover is a take on the "caged
humans with an inset of Dr. Zaius" motif from one of the film's famous movie
posters. What makes it so interesting though, is that the caged humans
artwork is in black & white and the Zaius photo is in color, which I
believe, is a reverse of the movie poster. Also, there's no Japanese
writing on the cover, but of course, half of the book insert is in Japanese.
I didn't buy the disc in Japan though, so I think it was the most expensive
CD I've ever bought. Import prices! Sort of like when the Medicom Ape
figures first came out.

Fantastic job on the website! I like opening five different windows on my computer and loading all five one sheets pages and then clicking back and forth between the scores to hear the difference.
It's interesting how each score compliments each film, is very appropriate
for the specific film, but they're all still quite different in tone. I
think the Apes series was like that though. You have five really different
films that still manage to form a cohesive whole AND also manage to pull off
an incredible story arc, all at the same time.

I love John William's stuff for the Star Wars films, but there really isn't
a huge difference in the music from film to film like there is with the Apes
series. Again, excellent job on the website! Thanks!

Oh, and the promotional Herald covers are awesome! Could we see the full
front page though? Or is the rest of it just text?

Okay....

The art is by far, the very BEST so far! The already infamous "Dirty Harry"
panel is exquisite! The detail on the "Ursus" pistol alone is awesome!

As I've said before though, I'm not too much into the blood splatter thing
(especially since real life gun shot wounds don't always produce external
bleeding...) but the whole sequence is done so incredibly well that it is
hard not to appreciate the whole dance of death thing. I'm not totally
against gratuitous violence when it's done artisically and done really well
to boot. Overall, an excellent job! It's almost like watching a really
good Quentin Tarantino picture. There's way too much blood... but darn it!
It's done SO well!

I think the last panel of Gideon backed against a canyon wall is the
probably my favorite. You sure can read emotion through those makeups!

Hi Will,
FSM have worked hard to give you your money's worth (Fox could
learn a thing or two from them) The Beneath CD also includes
the original and quite different Vinyl LP recording and the
Conquest/Battle combo includes the TV series theme as a
bonus. Add top notch packaging, design and informative
booklets and I don't think you will be disappointed.

I don't have the Japanese version so I can't comment if there are
any 'sonic' differences. The Escape suite is actualy around 16
minutes so I'd hesitate to call it 'measly' (I once bought a CD
where the entire movie score only ran to 32 minutes!) and it
remains, officially the only recording available.

I do really like the cover for the Varese Sarabande

I believe it is a French/Belgian movie poster design

Sadly, that isn't true, is it?

The suite from "Escape" is a frustrating teaser for the score, really.

I think it's sad that, by the sound of it, "ESCAPE" is the one score
that won't get a full, commercial release.

I feel, personally, that it's the second "great" "Apes" score;
Rosenman's stuff is too unmelodic for me.

For what it's worth, I really love the scores Richard La Salle and Earle
Hagen did for their TV segments, but I suspect the chance of seeing
*those* released is even less than that for "Escape..."

>I found Varese Sarabande's site. It's
>different from the Japanese version I got overseas.

Fascinating, Will!

I wonder if they're different remasterings?

I did buy the Sarabande CD; it was the first release of the full score -
which I think is outstanding. All that unused stuff from the crash-
landing was a joy to hear.

I think it's one of Goldsmith's best scores.

>I do really like the cover for the Varese
>Sarabande

When I came across this (in the form of an original poster for sale at a
Movie Memorabilia Sale in 1976 or so) I was told that it was the Belgian
poster.

This particular dealer had dozens of Belgian posters for sale (I recall

I've since seen it referred to as the French poster - maybe the same
design was used for both countries.

That *is* nice. It was the colour scheme of the original "PROJECT 3"
vinyl partial release of the soundtrack, by the way.

I know, but it's great to be able to buy this stuff... and, hey - you'd
only have wasted the money on food or something!

I thought chapter 9 was fantastic. The artwork is just as top-notch as the earlier chapters, and I agree with the previous statements made regarding Neil's layouts.

Gideon sure didn't save those bullets for long, but then what choice did he have? I can't wait to see what he does next. I expect were not in for 9 pages of Gideon getting swarmed by savage humans until we get to the end.

Okay, I found this easily enough when I got home on Friday. In between loads of laundry yesterday I got all of the articles scanned and just sent PDF files off to Hunter this morning. (They're far too large to post here in the group files.) I'm sure Hunter will let us know when he's got them added to his site.

I have this buried in a box somewhere. I'll dig it out when I get home from
vacation and see how much of it is worth scanning.

Greg,

Tell us more about "Freak" and I'll count yours as 2 reviews!

Give us spoilers too....

Would you like to see it turned into a comic?

yes, i think i paid 25 or 35 american dollars for my
beneath CD, but i don think it was a waste of money.
in addition to the alternate soundtrack, it also has
lots of dialogue snippets as well as sound FX.
and (as previously mentioned) the liner notes are very
very interesting, especially as they pertain to the
alternate soundtrack.

ALSO-
i have an escape soundtrack i am wondering about.
its a bootleg i bought a few years ago (before i knew
there was anything better available).
it has 16 tracks, and also has goldsmith's score for
damnation alley.
it says "limited archival pressing" but i cannot find
the name of a company on it.

Um, about the comic book thing... I used to have a friend that drew
these kinds of comics. This is a PG13 group!

Actually, Mithril, I liked the story. You did a nice job. I'll

Hi Will,
FSM have worked hard to give you your money's worth (Fox could
learn a thing or two from them) The Beneath CD also includes
the original and quite different Vinyl LP recording and the
Conquest/Battle combo includes the TV series theme as a
bonus. Add top notch packaging, design and informative
booklets and I don't think you will be disappointed.

I found Varese Sarabande's site but am kind of in a
> quandry about whether to spring for their Planet CD

I don't have the Japanese version so I can't comment if there are
any 'sonic' differences. The Escape suite is actualy around 16
minutes so I'd hesitate to call it 'measly' (I once bought a CD
where the entire movie score only ran to 32 minutes!) and it
remains, officially the only recording available.

I do really like the cover for the Varese Sarabande
> disc though. I'm not sure where that artwork comes from

I believe it is a French/Belgian movie poster design

Dave

Dave:

Thanks for all the info! The Varese Sarabande version is definitely worth
the money, based on everyone's reports. I also don't think I'll be
disappointed with the FSM CDs.

I guess I should have known that that was the French/Belgian movie poster
design, but it's been a while since I've seen it as a movie poster.

Fascinating, Will!

I wonder if they're different remasterings?

I did buy the Sarabande CD; it was the first release of the full score -
which I think is outstanding. All that unused stuff from the crash-
landing was a joy to hear.

I think it's one of Goldsmith's best scores.

That *is* nice. It was the colour scheme of the original "PROJECT 3"
vinyl partial release of the soundtrack, by the way.

Mark:

The CD cover does say, "Project 3." I guess it's a Japanese re-release of
the original vinyl partial release. I'd love to say it's "rare" just the
way everybody overuses the term on eBay, but I suspect that it is quite rare
in most places in the world, but not so rare in Japan.

At any rate, thanks very much for the info. I now know a lot more about my
copy of the Planet soundtrack. It also tells me that the Varese Sarabande
version is definitely worth the money since it actually does feature the
full score, the cut from Escape AND the French/Belgian poster.

Can you tell us any other details about the soundtrack? I'm assuming it's a
CD, right? Does the cover look professionally done?

at will hoover's request:

my bootleg has pretty cheap packaging.
its a nice design, but i dont think it is professional
becasue there is no mention of FOX, or any "copyright"
symbols anywhere.

the cover is blue, black, and white; split cover art
has damnation alley on the left, and escape on the
right.
interior has what looks like it may be the japanese
poster art.
at bottom it says:
here at last are two of the most wanted jerry
goldsmith scores.
escape from the pota is presented inits most complete
form.
damnation alley is made from the foreign dubbing
tracks and has some sound efects and dialogue leakage.

I don't think there's any problem there - we've seen from the BEHIND
doc that he's articulate enough - I would expect that, like so much
with Fox, it was done like this purely for economical (i.e. cheap)
reasons. Or maybe it was to save room on the disc for other stuff.

Is it really a monthly comic you want? Assuming that you could get a
licence, would it not be better to focus on a series of one-shots and
miniseries? I think this would be better suited if you're going to be
using different creative teams, it would be slightly easier to
schedule and it would avoid any potential dip in quality that would
result from trying to crank out 22 pages every month just to keep it
monthly.

I have seen this disc, although I don't have it personally. This disc
is a bootleg - "Damnation Alley" has NEVER been released, even on LP.
It's one of the most desired Goldsmith soundtracks (a perfect blend of
orchestra and electronics - from the same period as his similar and
also excellent "Logan's Run" score) but as far as I know a lot of the
recordings were damaged, which is why your bootleg has the wording
about dialogue, etc. They've obviously not got a proper source to
record it from. Even the lovely but too expensive Jerry Goldsmith
boxset from Varese featured only a couple of tracks from this film (I
think the orchestral tracks were okay but the electronics were lost,
or something like that).

Just to echo the sentiments of everyone else, the Varese disc is a
must-buy but the FSM discs are even more special. They might seem
pricey, but they are worth every penny and are a perfect example of
what is possible when a company care about what they are producing.
Also bear in mind that FSM's licence, to the best of my knowledge,
only covers the 3000 copies produced. Once they're sold out, that's
it, you'd be looking at silly eBay prices. (Check out what happened
with their Omega Man CD)

Your best bet would be doing either a bi-monthly or a quartely issue. The cost would be less than a monthly issue and the deadlines would be easier to meet.
