I don't know Alan.

I would like a monthly comic, and I guess I can wait 3 years (while building
up a stockpile) to do it....but then you lose momentum.

I think the key is momentum and grabbing new fans (AND KEEPING THEM!) while
keeping the more established fans happy too.

If we released BTB professionally, I personally believe it would generate
some real excitement in the comic book stores. People would be wanting
more, and we would look silly if we were not prepared to give them more.

The less complicated scenario you describe is OK, but would be a compromise.
I always tend to shoot high so that even a compromise ends up looking pretty
damned good!

Is it really a monthly comic you want? Assuming that you could get a
licence, would it not be better to focus on a series of one-shots and
miniseries? I think this would be better suited if you're going to be
using different creative teams, it would be slightly easier to
schedule and it would avoid any potential dip in quality that would
result from trying to crank out 22 pages every month just to keep it
monthly.

Just to echo the sentiments of everyone else, the Varese disc is a
must-buy but the FSM discs are even more special. They might seem
pricey, but they are worth every penny and are a perfect example of
what is possible when a company care about what they are producing.
Also bear in mind that FSM's licence, to the best of my knowledge,
only covers the 3000 copies produced. Once they're sold out, that's
it, you'd be looking at silly eBay prices. (Check out what happened
with their Omega Man CD)

We have a talented bunch of humans in this group, better than Star Search.
Someone can do something in every category. The apes will be well entertained.
The point of this poll is to try to feel like what it must be like for animals
who are expected to perform. I gave choices
in this poll but we know that the circus owner would most likely assign us to
do something.
Do you think the apes would really approve of a human comedian or a dramatic
reading of the Sacred Scrolls? Elaine

Okay....

The art is by far, the very BEST so far! The already infamous "Dirty Harry"
panel is exquisite! The detail on the "Ursus" pistol alone is awesome!

As I've said before though, I'm not too much into the blood splatter thing
(especially since real life gun shot wounds don't always produce external
bleeding...) but the whole sequence is done so incredibly well that it is
hard not to appreciate the whole dance of death thing. I'm not totally
against gratuitous violence when it's done artisically and done really well
to boot. Overall, an excellent job! It's almost like watching a really
good Quentin Tarantino picture. There's way too much blood... but darn it!
It's done SO well!

I think the last panel of Gideon backed against a canyon wall is the
probably my favorite. You sure can read emotion through those makeups!

I tend to think that is one of the strenghs of the POTA films. Each
film has a different look and tone that is unmistakingly its own.
Each film introduces the viewer to a new civilization or society.
Each of the first four films has a different lead character and
Director.
Most film series seem to be retreads of the first film. Is Lethal
Weapon 4 really that different than Lethal Weapon. The POTA films
don't fall into that trap and it helps make the series a true saga.

Thanks. I'd love to show the full covers but I only have a feed
through scanner and it isn't big enough to do the full covers. And
I'd rather not fold them either to do them in section.

Well I'd like to thank everyone for their positive comments so far,
my ego really needs it ;-)

But, like I've said before, I just draw the pictures. I am part of a
team and I could do nothing without the great words written by my pal
Dave Ballard.
Lets not forget that 'just' re-writing his wonderful story to fit
into a comic format was not the end of Dave's invovement. When he
receives my art he has to add the words, some of which have to be
changed from the original script as that idiot of an artist sometimes
goes off on a tangent and draws something totally different from what
was expected!
Besides his ego is even bigger than mine! ;-)

Oh, there is someone else we should not forget about in this team
also. Our humble editor - Mike Whitty. This guy makes the best tea
and... I mean this guy steps in and sorts out all the cat fights and
disageements that we two creative types have all the time... no, wait
that's wrong too! Mike is the guy that does all of the behind the
scenes stuff that you don't notice.
He got this project off the ground in the first place, he sorts out
problems, he sees thing that we don't as we are too close to what we
have done to notice, he offers constant encouragement to name but a
few things. (plus he has the biggest ego of the lot of us!!)

So I take my hat off to these two great guys who have become great
friends and to all you fans who have enjoyed our efforts so far.

Thanks,
Neil

Whitty had SOME creative input too!

Remember his instructions for drawing the comic:

"lots of sticy outy panels where the contents of the panel go
outside the panel...you know?"! ;)

AND....wasn't Whitty responsible for an "EXTENDED EDITION" finale?
Huh? Huh?

Whitty totally rocks!

Talking of connections, I saw the sixties sci-fi thriller "SECONDS" in
the cinema the other day. It features Jeff "Beneath" Corey and John
"Escape/Conquest" Randolph in prominent roles, and one of the greatest
Jerry Goldsmith scores outside of Planet of the Apes (it would
certainly be in my Goldsmith top 5). Absolutely brilliant.

This story is really about Urko wanting to retire and change his life, but he
has an inner struggle with this. He is tired of being a workaholic and having
no personal life. He also struggles with liking the small dog because tough

What about using the format DC is using for its book Batman:Legends
of the Dark Knight? For those unfamiliar with this book it is a
monthly title that is made up of mini series that are between two and
six issues long. It also does one shot story issues. It has no
continuity in the sense that the different mini series do not relate
to each other. One Batman story arc will be about an episode early in
his Batman life and the next might be current. This way you could do
Beware as a one issue, a mini of the TV characters, some of the
stories you always wanted to see and have it be in the same title.
The art teams on each mini could be different or a mixing of the same
teams,(one artist penicls, then inks next time). You could rotate a
regular mix of atists and try to get name artists for one shots
that "would just love to do the POTA" but can't commit to a monthly.
This also has the advantage of being able to collect popular story
arcs into trade paperbacks for the bookstores. A collection of
several single issue stories would be good too, Beware The Beast and
Other Tales of The POTA...

Hi Damon.

Thanks for taking the time to do this - I really enjoyed seeing the first
attempt at the Test Page.

You can tell from the establishing panel that we are in Ape City.

In the second panel you can see the gorilla soldier - he is obviously
guarding the building shown behind.

I don't know why, but the style seems to me to be reminiscent of an early
cover of Boulle's Monkey Planet.

I like the use of grey to show things in the background too.

My favourite panel is the larger one on the bottom half of the page. I like
this angle very much.

Elaine, Damon, I would very much like to see a collaboration from the pair
of you!

Re: BTB;

I just read the complete (so far) story and I like it very much. Neil's
art is clean and while I find the writing mildly stilted at times (it
might just be that we see all the dialog in captions, though), the story
has me wanting to know the end, which is really the goal of writing, yeah?

I think that Elaine's stuff would make for nice comics. Lighter than
Dave and Neil, for sure. But Elaine's stuff moves right along and
includes a variety of types of characters. The Dinner Guest would be
a fun comic. I'd love to see the expressions. I'm picturing a
different sort of artwork then Neil does -- maybe because blood and
bullets just don't work here. ;) A new collaboration sounds fun.
You guys should look into it.

On AMC there is a show where ordinary people can act out their
favorite movie characters. Some guys already have done the "Blues

considering to send in my wish to be in the original "Planet of the
Apes, perhaps even going as far as acting out Zira's part. Although
I've been in enough plays and have been a extra for movies, I feel
nondeserving for such a part - which in my eyes is daunting because
only Kim can fill in Zira's shoes. What do you think? Would any of
you go as far as doing something like this? I feel really silly and
shy about this. I would just like to crawl into a real-original John
Chamber's ape make-up and see what is really like. THis is dream, I

I know what you mean, Wendy. Ok, our experience was NOTHING LIKE
being in the movies. But, I loved getting dressed up as Apes for the
day. Our whole crew loved it!! Of course, there is something about
the latex masks that we wore (faces and suggestions donated by Brian
Penikas at Apemania) that made them move with our facial
expressions. Granted, we had spent hours (days actually) fooling
around with these faces, so we got pretty exaggerated sometimes. But
it was amazing! LOTS of fun. So, my "wish" would be to be made up
professionally to look Zira-like. I would love the four hours of
sitting in a chair with someone puting goop on my face, and I would
love BEING an Ape. I think if we had an Apes' field day, it would be
fun to have Brian teach us how to do this and then we could make each
other up and spend some time just acting like Apes. It would be fun
to do this for a cause, maybe a charity or benefit. I hope you get
your wish, Wendy.

Tell us about your acting career, Wendy.

I like this idea too it could be called something like 'Tales of the
POTA' or something similar.

Someone also suggested rather than doing a monthly try it as a
quarterly or bi-monthly to start. Marvel's original magazine was a
bi-monthly but became monthly quickly because it was so popular.

I have a suggestion that everyone may or may not like. One of the
things I liked about Marvel's magazine is that you got two POTA
comics instead of just one in each issue. Here's my thought. Split
every issue in two. Do one continuing story to keep readers coming
back every month (perhaps something based on the TV series) and
another story that can be a one shot or a multi-part mini-series.
Then instead of having one artist trying to fill 25-30 pages per
issue, you can have two each doing only 12-15 pages. This also gives
you flexibility to mix and match for each issue in case one artist
is falling behind. Just a thought.

I think that Elaine's stuff would make for nice comics. Lighter than
Dave and Neil, for sure. But Elaine's stuff moves right along and
includes a variety of types of characters. The Dinner Guest would be
a fun comic. I'd love to see the expressions. I'm picturing a
different sort of artwork then Neil does -- maybe because blood and
bullets just don't work here. ;) A new collaboration sounds fun.
You guys should look into it.

On AMC there is a show where ordinary people can act out their
favorite movie characters. Some guys already have done the "Blues
Brothers" and were excellent at mimicking Dan and John. I've been
considering to send in my wish to be in the original "Planet of the

O.K. Whitty...here's your review.
I re-read Freak and I thought it was a great story, well told and
easy to read. It was a bit darker than what I am used to when it
comes to Apes, but it was still a good read. I think the darker
side of the characters added a little more depth to the realm of the
Apes legend.
This is the type of story Burton should have made into a movie
instead of the one he did make. I could see adding a little more
visualization of a back story or setting up of the characters to add
to the depth that is already there.

Thanks Greg.

It does get dark doesn't it? But I do think in context POTA would get a lot
darker if it were made today, and I agree this is something Burton SHOULD
have done.

To show you how much your comments ARE appreciated, I will arrange for the

Yes, I do like it.

Very imaginative use of panels/great variety.

This is a more realism orientated approach as opposed to to Damon's more
abstract, stylised approach.

I have poems that Whitty read. There is parody that I wrote
somewhere back in the files I think. It's a crossover, a little
insane and very cheesy. Believe me, the parody is not my best

It sounds like all of you had SO much fun. I wish I could have been
there. I have an ape costume also but the mask is nothing compared to
Apemania's mask. I don't dress up often becasue I feel so alone in
the universe and awkward. It's hard when people are pointing,
laughing, and yes, even calling me monkey. It's true what Roddy and
Kin said. People DO call you monkey treating you like where a circus
animal. If there were other apes around, especially gorillas, people
wouldn't be quick to poke fun. In any case, I love dressing up as an
ape. It's just standing in front of camera that bothers me,
especially when I know I'm gong to be on national TV. (blush)

Wendy

PS. Dressing for charity is a capital idea. Starwars fans dress up as
their characters and visit hospitals and so on. There is
a "Stormtrooper" association that participates in charities. I've
seen these guys. Not only do they authentic stormtrooper outfits,
they act like stormtroopers. Kids love them.

I know. It's true that somehow the Ape "persona" is sucked into the
person wearing the costume and the old person evaporates. We
actually did "experiments" at home to see how Apey a person had to be
dressed before they took on "the look." It doesn't take much. The
muzzle? The eyebrows? Some "hair." **Goosebumps**

We were passing peanuts out to the crowds. Because we were a group,
we were out to have LOTS of fun (at the crowds expense). ;) So we
just acted like they were animals in the zoo, fed them, laughed with
each other about them, etc. It was really strange because, aside for
the obvious Apes fans, the humans all played their parts nicely.
They looked at us strangely, accepted the peanuts, and were actually
quite docile. My son, then 8, handed out little rubber balls that
looked like rocks to all the little kids. It was supposed to sort of
represent a child Ape throwing rocks at the humans, but it was (of
course) all in fun. The whole town participated without even
knowing. The fun part was, these are people that we grew up with and
around, and basically -- unless they were involved in the project --
no one knew who we were.

PS We have since gotten dressed up again to visit the emergency room
on Halloween. (We do this without guns -- although we do carry
clubs.) We actually got a lot of positive feedback from many people
at the hospital that night, so I'm sure that visits like that are ape-
preciated. Most common feedback? "Hey. Planet of the Apes. I
liked the first ones better."

Yup. That happens to me all the time. Especially James's emails.
(I don't know why.) Then they get deleted if I don't rummage in the
bin to see what's in there. :((
