| Subject: Bitter Oldman |
|
.html It's no secret that Gary Oldman was originally supposed to play
Thade in POTA 01. I remember when he supposedly "pulled
out" of the project. He made some very bitter remarks in a press
conference and said something to the effect that the producers
of POTA 01 were "cheap." I guess he asked for too much
money.
At any rate, I didn't think anything more about Oldman in
conjunction with POTA until I saw him in Hannibal (also released
in 2001). Hannibal was definitely not the best movie I've ever
seen, but as usual, Oldman's performance was outstanding just
the same. Of course, the film was extremely gory, with Oldman
playing Mason Verger, the faceless victim of Hannibal Lector.
Beyond the fact that the pieces of his character's face were fed to
his dogs by Lector, there is something that bothered me a great
deal about that movie when I saw it...and bothers me still.
You see, I enjoy watching the documentary, Behind the POTA
about as much as I do watching the original five films. In fact, I've
seen it so many times that I am getting to the point where I can
almost recite the interviews by heart. In particular, I really enjoy
Bill Creber and Frank Capra Jr.'s commentary and have noticed
that they both have very distinct voices and mannerisms. But
from watching the documentary so many times, the person
whose voice sticks with me the most is Richard Zanuck, who
incidentally produced POTA 2001.... So... I hope nobody thinks
I'm crazy but I could swear that Gary Oldman is immitating Dick
Zanuck in the movie Hannibal!
I realize I may be going out on a limb here, but I have always
wondered if Oldman didn't immitate Zanuck in Hannibal
because he was so bitter about how "cheap" the producers
(namely Zanuck) were on POTA 01. Anyway, before you totally
dismiss my idea, rent a copy of Hannibal, listen to Oldman do
his character in the film and then listen to Dick Zanuck in Behind
the POTA. If you don't agree, that's fine, but he sure does sound
like Zanuck and by my way of thinking that's way too much of a
coincidence to merely be a coincidence. And I guess only Gary
Oldman knows for sure.... <.html

Who is this for?
I know Neil was commissioned to design a tattoo for Wuher Brewer, and I
think Neil would do so again, but there is not a lot of source material
out there for such things other than maybe comics.

I have both the U.S. and Japanese versions of Varese Sarabande's
POTA/Escape soundtrack. They are the same except for the the cover and
booklet art. I found the Japanese version here at a Tower Records (grey

do it for the packaging. - - - Jeff

The current issue of "Lee's Toy Review" (July) includes 7 full-page ads by Sideshow announcing their latest licenses: "Highlander", "Terminator",
"Aliens", "Predator", "Scarface" (Al Pacino), Marvel Comics, and something called "Star Wars". Those are just the latest. A look at their site will also show stuff like "Lord
of the Rings", "Simpsons", "Universal Monsters", "Star Trek", blah, blah, blah. All I know is POTA has a lot of competition there. It better perform (and it sounds like it is,
especially Zauis and Cornelius). I don't think one company has had this many licenses since the Mego days. - - - Jeff

For me it didn't live up to the potential of the original film.
IMO it wasn't Zanuck's fault or Marky Mark's fault or even FOX's
fault. The fault lies with Tim Burton. The guy's an overrated hack

It's a new one. Bearded and scruffier. I like this one better. He's $45, limited to 500. Here's the blurb from Sideshow:
*ASTRONAUT TAYLOR EXCLUSIVE
This version of Charlton Heston's famous charactor from POTA looks as though it may have come from someone's cold, dead hands. The new worn and dirty uniform, plus an entirely new portrait and accessories make
this collectible a must have for Heston fans.

Sideshow has already announced 2 Taylors (and a Nova, etc.). It was in that announcement I put up here a while back. The second Zauis is an add-on because of the popularity of the 1st Zauis.
As far as i know, Taylor hasn't been all that popular. The astronaut Taylor was planned from the beginning. - - - Jeff

Been away for a bit, just getting caught up on the messages on

It has to be quite costly to make. I wonder how many collectors out

great as well. Now if we could only get some TX9 (whatever that is)

.html Janos Prohaska played the role of the depressed gorilla that killed
Dr. Milo. If he also played the role of Heloise (can someone
confirm?), then he would have had some contact with the real
chimpanzee Milo/Salome. Prohaska seems to have made a career of
playing ape and other animal roles. Unfortunately, he was killed in
a plane crash in 1974. But did he leave memoirs/biographical info
that family kept. If he did, he would likely have mentioned not only
playing a role as ape, but playing alongside a real simian. I
realise this is a huge long shot, especially since Prohaska died
only 3 years after working on Escape.

I mentioned Sideshow's "statement" on June 10. This should lead to it:

Good thought. Thank you. All we need, presumably, is a name. Does
anyone have family contact information? We have followed lesser
leads and, although we are still chasing wild geese, we've found some
interesting stuff and corresponded with some interesting people.

According to this, there is to be an astronaut Taylor and a slave
Taylor. Yet, now we have a special edition Forbidden Zone Taylor.
Does that make three Taylors? (The other two were supposed to be
$40.00.)
I wish they would put more into other characters, too. I can't
afford to buy every variation of every character that they offer over
these next few weeks. Take heart, though, they do mention at the
bottom of that article that they have plans for characters from some
of the other movies. They will probably unveil those AFTER I have
spent my mortgage money on the ones they are dribbling out now.

Oldman knows for sure....

first Taylor (Astronaut Taylor) seems clean (clean clothes, clean
face, etc.). The second Taylor (Forbidden Zone Taylor) has dirty
knees and shoes and is unshaven. He also has the backpack, and
appears to be a better likeness of Taylor. So, since neither one is

Well, I don't have a collection, so I don't need them all. However,
I like Zira real well. I wish they would do the children: Baby Milo

not to see Gen. Thade enthroned on that chair.
Rather, it happened when I finally got around to reading issue 8

so possibly this has been discussed. But Paul Rowe's article on the
lost, remaining 12 filmed episodes of season 1 of the 1974 TV series
just blew me away. I've never read about this or heard a word about
this anywhere. Was this information new to everyone else? Rowe's
article left me with many questions:
- How many fans knew about this stuff before the article?
- Is there anyone in the London area who saw episode 15 on tv?
- How was the info in article come by? Were these personal
interviews with those involved, or researched gleanings from older
printed interviews from the actors, producers. There are no
references in the article, but there are many quotations presented.
- How could such a large omission be missing from the work done in
the various books printed in the past few years (Legend, American
Myth, Revisited)?
- How did the actors who contributed to the Behind documentary
(especially McDowall) not think to discuss their lost work on Apes
for the documentary maker. All of the books, filmographies, and the
documentary are no longer comprehensive.
- Episode 15 aired on London television. Eps. 16-24 did not. Were
these episodes fully completed, with editing, main, and end titles,

It really was a more effective hoax than Tim Burton's twist on

Burton should have read that issue of Scrolls before going ahead

I assume a disclaimer will be important in the following issue. Look
how easily the incorrect name of astronaut Jeff Allen got
substituted almost everywhere for Jeff "Carter". Similarly, the
story of episode 14 of the tv series was almost universally and
incorrectly reported as "never aired" when one source copied from
another for its information. It can happen.

I think Kass provided a statement here that there were only 150 Corneliuses left. Definitely Zauis # 1 and Cornelius were their top POTA sellers. But many of the people buying them are
collectibles stores and websites, so they'll actually be for sale at the end of the year when they're released. Just because they sell out on the Sideshow website doesn't mean they're history. As for
collectibility, I think the ones that don't sell a lot are the ones that become rare and pricey. They often say that female characters are a good investment because boys don't want female "action
figures" so companies don't make as many. But these are sold as "collectibles" (with a price to match) so buyers will take good care of them. Down the road I don't think these will be rare or hard
to find. I'm not sure what Sideshow does with stock that doesn't sell. Bonfires? - - - Jeff

As an extra to fill out a set, he would be okay; but as the first

And, although the guys would disagree here, I don't need a Nova. We
must have over 50 Barbie dolls floating around this house -- and they

My apologies to Dave, Neil and Mike for not posting my thoughts on this chapter earlier. As usual, the art is excellent, and once again Gideon has done something I didn't expect. It may
be a tactical error, since he's now in a confined space, but it's probably the most defensible place he could be right now (not that it's going to mean anything when the A/O bomb goes off).
I have a question for Neil regarding reference materials. Clearly he used reference photos of the ship from both Planet and Beneath, but I'm wondering if he used any photo references for the humans. The anatomy of
the humans is perfect, and there's some variety in the faces and body structures so it's clear you're not just using one generic human that you redraw multiple times to create a mob of them. If you did use
photo references, were they stills from the movies or did you get friends to pose for you?
And a question for Dave: Why isn't Gideon part of the invasion force? I would have thought that Ursus would have enlisted every able-bodied gorilla. Please don't answer if it's part of the resolution to the
story, but I'm just curious why a skilled soldier like Gideon was left behind while the rest of his fellows went off to invade the Forbidden Zone.

This is probably superfluous, but in regard to the following

>I believe so, yes...I've seen stills, at least, and not just make-
>up/costume shots...
In his diary entries in "THE ACTOR'S LIFE", Heston remarks, after seeing
a rough cut of APES, that Schaffner has cut the movie to the bare bones
of the narrative - which implies stuff was being taken out.
Also, some time ago, on eBay, someone offered up for sale a black and
white contact sheet of some 36 35mm photographs; they were all shots of
Zira and Nova standing by the wagon on the top of the cliffs, with Zira
holding Nova's arm and looking solicitous.
Similarly, of course, there are stills of gorillas surrounding the wagon
(with Zira and Lucius in the driving board) in a forest setting - which
suggests that the scene in the script where the fugitive's wagon is
intercepted by a gorilla hunting party was also shot.
*sigh*
I'd like to think all this stuff is around somewhere (along with the
footage of the Zira, Cornelius and Milo witnessing Earth's destruction
through the viewports of the spacecraft from ESCAPE) but I read recently
how it was standard practice for some studios, once a film had been
edited, to destroy raw footage.
Certainly, the rough cuts of movies which have surfaced in recent years
(FORBIDDEN PLANET, BLADE RUNNER) have only survived by accident.

Funny, when we first planned it I was hoping to spend $1 000 and

Okay, First up Gideon isn't a soldier, he works for the
Extermination authority. In time of war yes it's likely that reserve
forces would be called upon, if not to go into battle then certainly
to protect the city.
However the strategy to ensure the survival of the ape population
had two main objectives.
1: Ursus wants to expand borders, hence the doomed scouting
missions and ultimately the invasion of the Forbidden Zone - to
deal with the threat without.
2: Zaius wants to exterminate the vermin that threatens
agriculture - to deal with the threat within. (or maybe that was just
his excuse)
Gideon is best suited and trained to deal with the second part of
this masterplan, the human threat. I think it's likely that small
squads of exterminators working in pairs or alone are dotted all
around the area, perhaps taking thier orders directly from Zaius?
I don't know for sure WHERE Brent's ship crashed but for the
sake of my story I assume that it was far enough away from the
manouvers of the Ape army for Gideon not to bump into them.

Hey Greg I can only speak for myself but there is no need to
apologize. I didn't draw this comic for my massive ego to be
inflated even more, I did it because I wanted to and will do any
others for the same reason (plus Whitty is still refusing to release

I actually use anything I can, anatomy books, photos, even some of
my own body parts by using a mirror!
Some are just made up from scratch. I did use some human photos from
the movie but not for direct copies, just reference for hair &
beards, costumes etc.
Some of the faces were actual photos of faces of real people but the
hair and beards were added.
I tried to get Michael to pose for me but he wouldn't keep still and
kept complaining that the G - string was too tight!
Actually there is a rumor going around that the 'creators' may have
posed for a panel on an 'alternate' version of the second last page.

late '70s and only released on video in the U.S. That will drive
everyone crazy. LOL

.htmlWell, the votes are in for this one. The overwhelming majority (85%)
voted for "High Council" as the official name for the rulers of
Central City. There was, however, a vote (8%) for "Council of Elders"
and also a brave vote of 8% for "Fort Wayne" ("a fort!" Dr. Zaius).
I'll be listening carefully as I go through the series next time for
any variations, and to discover whether it is ever actually referred
to as Fort Wayne!

.htmlAnother majority vote agrees on "Chief of Security" as Urko's
official title in the series. There was a strong vote also (22%)
for "General", and others for the alternate wording "Security
Chief". Some more careful listening should settle the difference
between "Security Chief" and "Chief of Security". 6% of respondents
were very confused by the poll and are seeking therapy.

I haven't gotten to read the last digest or so, but in case you haven't seen
these yet, here's a picture of the 2 pack slaves - Nova and Taylor ($75)

.htmlI really do think Fox have these....SOMEWHERE!
Only time will tell....and hopefully if we show them POTA is a product worth
producing they might spend the money required to bring the missing bits to
the fans!

Hello, all.
This is probably superfluous, but in regard to the following
>was the prego nova footage shot?
>or is this a legend?
