Subject: paperback version of POTA
.html
Again, while sorting through my collection, I came across a few different
versions of the paperback release of PLANET. It seems that when the film
was out, there was a version released by Signet (with a cover price of 60
cents) that featured a photo of a Gorilla Soldier on the cover with the
three astronauts in the lower right hand corner. The text on the front
cover read (in red ink) "Now an exciting 20th Century Fox Motion
Picture". The back cover had a picture of Taylor & Nova in the cage, and
the movie credits were printed (again in red ink) on the left side. Fro
some strange reason, both human photos (front & back) had this weird sky
blue border/trim around them.

I have another version with the same layout, but all the film
blurbs/credits are missing, and the cover price is 95 cents (presumably
this was a later edition). The cover doesn't even have the "Bridge Over
the River Kwai" mention, nor any review pull quotes.

Then there's a third version that seems to predate the film because it
has a completely different cover with just a drawing of an apes face. But
this one has the "Bridge Over..." pull quote. So, does anyone have any
idea how many different paperback versions of the original novel were
released in the U.S.? I know of at least one more that featured a drawing
of that shot of Ursus we always see where he's on horseback and has his
pistol drawn, pointing upwards.

I doubt I'd ever try collecting a copy of every different printing, but
I'd be curious to know how many there are. One of the copies I have (with
the film credits) mentions that it's the twelfth printing, so they had to
be doing OK with that title for quite some time. Anyone know if it's
currently in print?

I think it's the same outfit but faded. When it's lighter green probably
those scenes were filmed later. It's definitely lighter in "Escape'. - - -

I thought Congo was one of Jerry's better scores of recent years (and
the film was a fun no-brainer - but I'm a sucker for lost world
movies).

I've not really got much to add to the comments so far as they seem to
have all summed up my own feelings - we've lost a few big PotA names
in recent years but this is the one that has bothered me most. Still,
I did get to see him in concert a few years back, which is still a
vivid memory and now even more treasured.

The music in my CD player this week has been PotA, The Illustrated
Man, Logan's Run, Take a Hard Ride and the compilation "Frontiers".
Brilliant stuff.

Which limited edition is this? I think there were actually three,
although two of them seem to be rarer.

The three colours you've listed are all that were available.

"The Only Good Human is a Dead Human" as the title translates into
English. I've got a copy, but I'm afraid it's a keeper (it sits nicely
next to a Spanish PotA book I've got)!

I've noticed that, too...But, I know they used two different film
developing companies/techniques to give a variety of looks, either
indoor or outdoor...That might be why her outfit looks different
colors...

Sorry Helen, I don't think this will happen. Cornelius and Zira look the
same as they did in the original and those figures have already been done.
Some one at the convention said they were thinking of ape-o-nauts, and also
a Caesar, Lisa and Cornelius II (the family angle). Wouldn't getting the
current Cornelius and Zira figures, and then formulating a Baby Milo (a
chimp doll and a small blanket) work? - - - Jeff

OK...Neil's playing hard to get!

He does not think there has been enough demand for the next chapter of BTB

Chapter - Chapter 12).

I'd strongly reccommend a solid, joint outcry....about NOW!!!!!

Are you ready to rock?

Well,

I just produced my calculator and it seems we are on track to maintain an
average of around 980 posts per month for 2004.

That really makes me happy, because it means we are amongst the top groups
on Yahoo re activity.

I am in a few other Yahoo! groups and they often get rapid posts while
something is "happening" (the Sopranos for example - which pushes hard to
get aroun 600 in a good month) and then zero posts when the topic is cold.

So it really is amazing that we can achieve such a buzz of activity, when
there is not really that much happening in the POTA world, and I want to
congratulate and thank everybody for this.

I guess we make our own music around here and I hope we can all keep it up.

By the way - it would be great to hear from some of the quieter members too
- we won't bite!

Not the worst looking thing I've ever seen, though I wish he'd shown the
sides and back. Anyone know how it compares to an original POTA box? Not
the ones that Mego73 is reproducing, but the regular boxes (if, in fact,
there was such a thing).

Correct. It is on the ICARUS site, and I even printed a copy of the photo
once. I'm not sure though whether or not it's a publicity still or just a
photograph from the film et.

He DOES have a badge.

C'mon guys -- I HAVE seen this stuff. But it's buried so far down

Clarity please!

I'll look for it now and post a link if I can!

This is another one of those widely discussed/debated topics, and I was
going to ask if there was anything in writing somewhere that indicated
whether CONQUEST/BATTLE took place on the East or West coast. Thanks to
the info James provided, we now have some proof.

So let me ask you guys this: are there any other references to location
for CONQUEST/BATTLE in books/unpublished screenplays/comic adaptations
etc? Someone had mentioned that the CONQUEST paperback made a point of
saying the story took place in Los Angeles, but I don't remember anyone
confirming/denying that.

Greg and I were discussing this the day of the MegoCon, and he came up
with an interesting suggestion: the dead city was actually Washington DC.
Thinking about it, it kind of made sense to me. I made a mental
connection to the Pentagon being in DC and that's why the Alpha Omega
bomb was there. also, there's that throwaway line in CONQUEST about Breck
running for some kind of high office ("You really think he's going
to...?" "I don't know of anyone who can stop him."). Maybe Dehn was
indirectly hinting at something with that dialogue?

Here's another thing: Virgil says in BATTLE that it's a three day journey
to the dead city, and based on Dehn's screen treatment, we're presuming
that the Ape Village is in the area of NYC since it's supposed to be the
same Ape City/Village in the first movie. So (and I'm geographically
challenged here so hopefully someone can answer this for me): would it be
feasible for someone to get from NYC to DC on foot in three days time,
presuming they were walking for most of each day?

I'm curious to hear some opinions on all this.

When you say "character boxes", I'm presuming you mean the ones like
this: http://www.megostore.com/mc/images/usergallery/980112654454.jpg
that you've been reproducing and providing links for in the DG. Were
there other, more generic boxes used for the Apes figures as well i.e.
the one that just recently ended on eBay
(http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5906656268)? I know
that all the Mego boxes had photos of other figures on the sides and a
photo or drawing of the figure you were buying on the back, but I can't
remember now whether or not I've seen an Apes figure boxed in anything
other than the type you've been reproducing (aside from the Spanish &
Japanese boxed figures Greg & I saw at the MegoCon).

I'd agreed with both inferences: both the name and the blindness of
Skipper's character in BENEATH were references to an earlier idea. One of
those cinematic "in-jokes" that producers/writers occasionally throw in.
Leave it to us to figure it out 35 years later. :-)

there is a "Ulysses" (ref. to Boulle) and it would seem that

First, welcome back Chris. You were away far too long.

You make a very convincing case. Just to play devil's advocate there
are a few things you may want to consider.

Zira refers to Cornelius as her fiance early in Planet, but not at
the end of the film. It is possible that their wedding took place
sometime during Planet such as in the weeks between Taylor's escape
attempt and trial.

Also, since Zaius suspected early on that Taylor came from a jungle
beyond the Forbidden Zone, it is possible that Ursus did too and was
sending the scouts into the FZ long before the end of Planet.

In Beneath their is no mention of C&Zs trial having taken place.
They could still be awaiting trial when the events of that film take
place. It would also give them additional motivation to go with Dr.
Milo knowing that they still faced a prison term for heresy.

Of course this is all just speculation. You're theory is just as
valid.

Yuh, I know, Jeff. But it's a shame, really. The Tagline: Meet baby
Milo who has Washington terrified. Yet, where are the Milo toys?
How can a person act out Escape without the baby? Just any old chimp
won't do.

So, here is my angle. Zira is seen dressing herself in the zoo. How
about an "easy dress" CZM Chimp family? Then BOTH the traditional
Apes garments and the shopping outfits could be included. Emphasis
could be put on the clothing, making these dressable Apes ape-pealing
to little kids. In fact, kids Babrbie dressing dolls cost some $40
(or more for the collectivle editions) so this isn't out of line.
Although all the dolls would be included and, of course, more
expensive.

Oh well. I've dressed more Barbies in my day than most people,
having played with them myself for many years -- then with my kids.
I don't suppose this would ape-peal to you guys, huh? Oh well, must
be getting old. But, THIS I would pay for.

Washington DC is over 200 miles from NYC. To walking in three days a
person would have to walk at least 67 miles per day. Doing so in
desert conditions is not really possible.
Also DC does not have a Govenor but a Mayor.
While the city is Conquest/Battle may not be NYC it may be somewhere
close by like Newark which is just across the river from New York
and connected by many underground tunnels.

Those covers are courtesy of Dave Ballard. He's working on a project

I always thought this way too...
In POTA the astronauts are treking across the desert and there is the
flashing of lightning and the rumble of thunder; and later, Dodge
comments upon "Thunder and lightning, and yet no rain." and "...that
strange luminousity, and yet no moon."...
By extrapolating (and it is only guesswork) that this is the mutants'
and their illusions, they must be "combatting" someone -- in my
opinion, the gorilla scouts of Ursus'...

Very true they could have. Personally, I've always liked to think
that it was Taylor's arrival that initiated the scouts being sent in
the first place. That would explain why Zaius saw Taylor as such a
threat as well as meaning the events of the first film caused the
events of the second film.

Chris L.

Good lord! I wrote, "The art was even black and white! I was really turned
off and subsequently, never bought a single issue of the Adventure comics of
the 90's. I just thought then and still do, that POTA deserves better."

Well gosh.... For starters, I'm not totally against B&W artwork. BtB for
example is far superior to ANY POTA comic I have personally EVER laid eyes
on and it's B&W so... I guess I should partially take that back. What I
mean, I guess, is that the POTA Adventure comic that I looked through when
it was first released back in the '90s absolutely did not appeal to me on
any level whatsoever. What I saw did not have photo realistic looking apes
the way they were portrayed in the film series. BtB features an ape
character that actually looks like a gorilla from the films! His uniform is
accurate and if it were in color, I suspect that the colors would be
accurate too.

As I've mentioned before, I think POTA, having been the very first sci-fi
"space opera" (as Charlton Heston so aptly put it) got a raw deal in it's
spinoffs and much of the merchandising that was produced from the films. In
artwork, we got gorilla soldiers wearing almost every color in the spectrum
and Zaius in a blue outfit for crying out loud! Mego really "monkeyed" with
colors and outfits as well. Now I love my POTA Megos but I have always felt
that they weren't as film accurate as they could have been and I just don't
see any excuse for that. Star Wars got a much better deal. Was a Darth
Vader figure ever produced in red? Were stormtroopers ever portrayed in
black? Did anybody ever make Luke Skywalker's tan trousers blue? Hell no!
The Kenner toys, as crude as the original sculpts were, were for the most
part, quite film accurate. And don't try and tell me it was a Mego thing!
The Star Trek Megos were pretty accurate for the most part and their later
offerings for The Black Hole, Buck Rogers and ST:TMP were also very film
accurate. And Mego's Fonzie was not wearing pink!

In any case, no, I never had a chance to see any of the Marvel B&W
magazines. To this day, sadly, all I've ever seen are the covers. I was
APE CRAZY when I was kid in the early seventies, but I was really young
(seven years old in 1974 when the TV series premiered) and I didn't get into
comics until I was ten when Star Wars came out. I would like to know more
about all the POTA comics that have been on the market to date though, just
to figure out which ones might be worth owning. As I have previously
posted, I would be extremely grateful if somebody could attempt to summarize
a history of sorts of the POTA comics. Not the ones from POTA 01 though!

Basically, like I've said before, I am a POTA purist. I get urked when I
see Urko wearing orange and a few of the covers from some of the Marvel mags
pretty much freak me out. Chimps wearing buckskin and a coon skin cap?!?!?
Like... what's THAT all about? Gorillas wearing Frazetta style viking armor
or some such CRAP!!! Again, BtB is definitely my idea of a POTA comic. Not
this fat bellied gorilla wearing a loin cloth and primitive necklace, "When
the Assimians Strike!" CRAP!!! DON'T MONKEY WITH MY APES, MAN!!!

You're not alone, Will. While some people are willing to buy anything
Apes-related, no matter how bizarre, ugly, or just downright
unnatural, I have no interest if it doesn't look right. The only Apes
memorabilia that I have that isn't right is the Dr. Zaius bank from
the '70s with the blue suit (and the model, but you can paint that
correctly), and that's only 'cause I found it in great shape for $5
and couldn't resist. But I have resisted most of the '70s toys,
simply because they do nothing for me (paratroopers??).

I have almost all the Marvel mags but haven't read 80% of the stories
in them. I bought them for the articles (no, really!), and the ones
I'm missing are later issues that have no articles and sell now for
$10 each or more. No thanks.

Will, as Gunpowder Julius would say,'Them's fighting words you ornery
critter!'.The Marvel stuff 'crap'!? I respectfully beg to differ. In
fact, most of the Marvel run was characterised by its high
quality.Doug Moench scripted a whole new world of Apes
with 'Terror', 'Future History Chronicle', Derek Zane etc,and ADDED
to the joy of the first five films with his excellent adaptations. The
artists on these strips read like menu of comics greats, including
Ploog, Alcala, Trimpe, Hannigan,Sutton, Rival. Some of the covers on
the US Mag are as good as any painted covers anywhere, any time.I get
a bit defensive when people put down the Marvel run because from 1974
to 1977 this mag was an absolute joy for Apes fans.Even the article
features were excellent and Apes more than holds its own with any
similar genre mag published then or since.Personally, I think that
Marvel managed to catch magic in a bottle with its Apes mags and they
will always be a big part of my Apes world.I would say that any Apes
fan who ignores these mags is missing out.And yes, BtB IS SUPERB AS

Well gosh.... For starters, I'm not totally against B&W artwork. BtB for
example is far superior to ANY POTA comic I have personally EVER laid eyes
on and it's B&W so... I guess I should partially take that back.

Everyone needs to remember that PLANET was/is a stand alone piece and that
the dialog in there is not meant to jibe with later films (because there was no
sequel planned at the time of PLANET.) The dialog mentioned above was supposed
to show a changed atmosphere and add to the "mystery" of where they are... It
had NOTHING to do with Mutants, as they weren't in anyone's minds at the
time...

I'll say that yes, you are just creating here by what you said, but these
type of things are only what people make up, they can't be taken too seriously
unless they're thought of as an "after fact" or "fan fiction/specultion"...
Then they are fine...

Absolutely.

I don't think it would be absurd, though, to reveal (as Fox might have at
some later stage) that it is mutant "defenses" in play.

Including a thread about the missing scouts would also not be absurd.

Obviously, there are some conjectures that just make ape fans' guts turn
though....and I won't go giving examples here but some things get so
detailed that they get ridiculous, and they really stray from what I call
"the spirit of POTA". It is my intention to try not to allow this in the
new line of comics, but then sometimes things that make sense to me sound
ridiculous to other fans!

John I totally agree with everything you've said here (well maybe
not Sutton, but then that is down to personal taste) I don't see
what the problem is with expanding on something and maybe going in a
totally different direction to what people were used to.

There is nothing wrong with having the characters wearing different
clothes etc. than they did in the films. I loved the whole Terror
story and idea, especially the brilliant art of mike ploog (my hero!)

So what if these stories and art didn't stick exactly to the films,
they were something extra, a whole new 'planet' to explore and the
art was great.

Seems a lot of you don't agree though and like your Apes pure and
unadulterated. Maybe we should have a poll on this as well?

Now if only Mike and Dave had let me draw Gideon the way I wanted.

Exactly... I'm just saying that "adding" later things into the original
PLANET is crazy... PLANET stands on it's own...

But, then again, if you were to do a "back story", like suggesting that the
Gorillas were sent into the Forbidden Zone to search for more "mutant" (i.e.
intelligent) humans as a prequel to BENEATH that'd make sense... Or to say that
the weather conditions were "illusions" in the context of a prequel to
BENEATH, that'd be ok to...

I'm just against adding to the story of PLANET to try making sense of what
came later... PLANET stands alone, BENEATH is the start of the sequels, what
happens in them starts at BENEATH, not PLANET...

"Expanding" is one thing... "Reinventing", "Restructuring", or "Rebuilding"
is something else again, and the latter is what MARVEL did to APES, and so did
ADVENTURE...

I too always thought that it could be the mutants, but not that they were
tormenting Ursus's scouts. It was mentioned in another post and I have to
agree: in one sense, you have to view PLANET as a stand alone movie
because there was never any plans for a sequel. HOWEVER, the stuff that
Dodge mentions above fits rather well into what happens in BENEATH. Who
knows? That scene could've given Paul Dehn the idea for the mutant's
visual hallucinations. He did say (something to the effect of) the idea
that the half-buried Statue of Liberty implied that the rest of NYC was
buried as well. I believe that's where he got (at least) part of the
original plot idea from.
